Best Time to Visit Portugal in 2027: Weather, Crowds and the Sea, Month by Month

Portugal runs on an Atlantic clock. Summers are bone-dry and bright (Lisbon sees barely 2 mm of rain across a typical July), while winters do almost all the year’s raining in soft, weeklong pulses. The ocean never really warms up, the light is famous for a reason, and the crowd curve swings by a factor of three between August and January. Which means “when should I go?” has a real answer, and it depends on what you’re coming for.

The best time to visit Portugal, at a glance

Twelve months, graded. Best months earn it on every axis. Good months trade one thing for another. Mixed means read the fine print. There is no outright Skip in Portugal: even the wet winter has its takers.

Portugal weather by month: the numbers behind the grades

Numbers below are 30-year climate averages for Lisbon, the country’s center of gravity and a fair proxy for the coastal core, with the national crowd level from official monthly lodging data (August, the peak, equals 100). The Algarve runs warmer and drier than every line below, the north wetter. The regional spread has its own section further down.

The best time to visit Portugal, by what you’re coming for

Cities and sights. April through June and September through October. You get Lisbon and Porto at 62–76°F walking weather (the Alfama hills, Porto’s Ribeira and the port lodges across the river in Gaia, Sintra’s palaces, the university town of Coimbra) with terraces open and lines that move. June adds the Santos Populares, Lisbon’s sardine-grilling street-festival month, at the cost of busier streets.

Beaches. August and September, and be picky about geography. The Atlantic off Lisbon peaks around 64–66°F. The Algarve’s sheltered eastern coast (the lagoon islands of the Ria Formosa off Faro and Tavira) runs warmest, reaching the low-to-mid 70s°F in late summer. The postcard cove beaches sit west, around Lagos (Ponta da Piedade, Praia Dona Ana). September quietly beats August almost everywhere: on the Algarve the sea is at its warmest, and nationally the crowds drop by a quarter.

Wine. September–October, full stop. The harvest is a working spectacle across the terraced Douro Valley and the Alentejo’s cork-oak plains, and Portugal’s tourism office points visitors to estates that open for it. Pair the vindimas with October’s 65-percent crowd level and you have the case for fall.

Surf and the wild coast. Fall through winter, when the big Atlantic swells arrive: the season of Nazaré’s giant waves, of Ericeira’s world-class reef breaks, of the empty cliff-backed beaches along the Costa Vicentina in the far southwest. Wetsuit territory, gloriously uncrowded.

Budget. November through February runs at a third of the August crowd. It rains (nine or ten days a month), but between the pulses you get mild 57–62°F days, half-price rooms, Lisbon to yourself, and in February the almond blossom turning the Douro’s terraces white.

August in Portugal: the trap month

August looks like the obvious choice (peak summer, driest skies, school’s out) and it’s the month most likely to disappoint. It is the national crowd peak (100 on our index), rooms price accordingly and sell out first, the interior Alentejo bakes past 95°F, and the payoff swimmers imagine isn’t there: the Atlantic off Lisbon still reads in the mid-60s°F.

Every August strength has a better month attached: September for the beach (warmer sea, 74% of the crowd), June for festivals (Santos Populares), May for walking. Go in August if the calendar forces you — go knowingly.

Portugal’s official monthly lodging statistics make the seasons concrete: 12.6 million nights in August 2025 against 3.9 million in January, a 3.2-to-1 swing. July runs at 84 percent of peak, September at 74, October at 65, and the deep winter months at roughly a third. If your dates are flexible by even two weeks, sliding from early August to late September changes the trip more than any other single decision.

If you remember one thing: Portugal’s best months are the ones just outside everyone else’s vacation. May and June buy you summer before the crowd; September and October keep it after, and add the harvest. August will still be wonderful in the photos — it always is — but the country’s easiest, warmest welcome lives on either side of it.
