Tavira in April: Weather, Sea Temperature, Rain Days and Crowds

April hands Tavira a 69.3°F afternoon, a 54.3°F dawn and 1.54 inches of rain spread over roughly five days. That is walking weather for the old town, the castle hill and the salt pans east of the river, and it sits far below the July heat that decides where everyone stands at noon.

The date question is whether to shift four weeks either way. March keeps the sea at 60.9°F and adds rain. May lifts the afternoon to 74.3°F while the water holds at 63.4°F. For where to sleep and how to move around once you land, our Tavira guide and the Algarve overview carry it.

April gives Tavira 69.3°F afternoons, thirteen hours of daylight and a sea at 63.5°F, which makes it a walking-and-lunch month with short swims rather than a beach week.

Every figure here comes from one of three places, and they are not the same kind of measurement. Air and rain are 1991-2020 normals from IPMA, the national weather service, read at station 554 in Faro, a real thermometer 5.0 m above sea level just west of Tavira on the same low, sheltered eastern coast. Sea temperature is a marine model average for 2015-2024. Daylight is calculated from sunrise and sunset. Ground that rises inland runs colder and a good deal wetter in the same week, so do not pack for a hill trail on a coastal reading.

The 69.3°F afternoon and the 54.3°F night are IPMA normals for 1991-2020, measured at station 554 in Faro, altitude 5.0 m. That thermometer stands west of Tavira on the same flat, sheltered stretch of the eastern Algarve, which is why we use it, and it speaks for the coast only. Higher ground behind the shoreline is colder and far wetter in the same week.

Rain totals 1.54 inches across the month, and 5.3 days record at least 0.04 inch. Call it one damp day in six, most often a band that crosses and clears. Those counts use IPMA’s own thresholds, not the 0.10-inch line American tables draw, so they do not swap with the counts in a US almanac.

Fifteen degrees separate the average afternoon from the average dawn, and an April day in Tavira spends both ends of that range outdoors. Breakfast on a terrace at 54°F wants a real jacket, while the same terrace at four in the afternoon wants sunscreen. Layers you can shed by ten and put back on at seven solve it, and our packing guide handles the rest of the kit.

April 15 runs 13 hours 13 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 6:55 a.m. and sunset at 8:08 p.m. local time, the clocks being on UTC+1 by then. You get a full afternoon after a long lunch, and light still on the river past eight in the evening.

Can you swim in Tavira in April? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea off Tavira averages 63.5°F in April in the Open-Meteo marine series for 2015-2024, and the way that average is built matters. It is the mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a mean taken across 24 hours. Water you walk into at nine in the morning is cooler than that average.

At 63.5°F, most Americans get a bracing ten or fifteen minutes before hands and feet complain. Children last longer and mind less. Anyone planning real distance in the water should plan on a shorty wetsuit in April. Shallow lagoon channels inside the Ria Formosa warm faster through the afternoon than the open Atlantic, which is where the first swim of a trip usually happens.

We found no April wind or wave series for this stretch, so we give no figures for either. The geography is not in dispute: Tavira’s beaches sit behind a barrier island, and the lagoon side stays flat when the ocean side is not. If swell matters to your week, read a marine forecast in the days before you fly rather than trusting a monthly average.

How busy is Tavira in April? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

April sits ahead of the Algarve’s beach season, with the sea at 63.5°F and afternoons at 69.3°F rather than summer values. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Tavira, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. We also could not verify any April event dates for the town, and we name none.

With no rate series to lean on, we give no booking window in weeks. The order still helps: flights first, since Faro is the airport for Tavira and most itineraries from the US involve a connection in Europe, as our flights guide sets out. Car second, bed third, and check whether your dates land on a spring school holiday, which we could not date for the coming year.

We could not verify a municipal tourist tax for Tavira, so we quote no per-night amount and no exemption age. A number of Portuguese municipalities charge one and collect it at checkout, so ask the property what it adds when you book. Our know-before-you-go guide covers the rest of the small print, and the cost guide frames the daily budget.

One upgrade changes April rather than decorating it: a car. The salt pans, the eastern beaches and the ferry quay at Quatro Águas sit apart from the old town, and a vehicle turns a half-day into a full one at 69.3°F. Our rental guide explains the toll system, which is the trap on Algarve motorways.

Things to do in Tavira in April

April makes the whole day usable outdoors. At 69.3°F the castle hill, the market and the salt pan tracks all work in full sun, and 13 hours 13 minutes of daylight leave room for a beach afternoon after a morning of walking. March, four weeks earlier, is cooler at 66.0°F and wetter at 1.84 inches, and it does not stretch that far into the evening.

The places worth naming: Ilha de Tavira, the barrier island facing the town, reached by ferry from the quay at Quatro Águas, the Castelo de Tavira with the church of Santa Maria do Castelo on the hill above it, the old stone bridge over the Gilão, the covered market on the riverfront, and the salt pans east of town inside the Ria Formosa lagoon, where flamingos feed. We could not verify April ferry times, fares or castle hours, so we print none. Check them the morning you go.

April moves the air more than the water. The sea barely shifts between March at 60.9°F and May at 63.4°F, while the afternoon climbs 8.3 degrees across those same eight weeks, from 66.0°F to 74.3°F. So the island reads as a walking beach this month, wide and nearly empty, with a swim measured in minutes.

We could not verify which sites in Tavira waive admission in April, so we promise nothing free at a ticket desk. What costs nothing is most of the day: the riverfront, the market square, the tracks between the salt pans, and the sand once you are across.

Tavira in April: a two-day itinerary

Day one can start at 6:55 a.m. if you want the sunrise, though eight on the riverfront is the humane version, with the air still in the fifties. Old town and castle hill before eleven, market and a long lunch while the afternoon reaches 69.3°F, then the ferry across for the four-to-seven stretch, when the light is best. Dinner back in town at eight, with the last daylight still on the water.

Day two goes east to the salt pans and the quieter beaches beyond, with a car or a bike doing the connecting. If the sky turns, and 1.3 days in an average April bring 0.39 inch or more, trade the pans for the covered market and the church on the hill, keep lunch indoors, and hold the beach for the following morning.

Tavira in April vs March and May

Measure March April May
Average high 66.0°F 69.3°F 74.3°F
Average low 51.4°F 54.3°F 59.0°F
Precipitation 1.84 in 1.54 in 1.03 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 5.6 5.3 3.8
Sea surface (daily maxima) 60.9°F 63.5°F 63.4°F

Set the three side by side and April lands in the middle on air and at the top on water. March runs 66.0°F by day and 51.4°F at night, with 1.84 inches of rain over 5.6 wet days and a sea of 60.9°F. May climbs to 74.3°F and 59.0°F, drops to 1.03 inches over 3.8 wet days, and holds the sea at 63.4°F. April’s 63.5°F is a tenth of a degree above May’s in the same marine series.

Shift four weeks back to March and you give up 3.3 degrees of afternoon and 2.6 degrees of water, and you take on 0.3 inch more rain across a similar count of wet days. Shift forward to May and you gain 5.0 degrees of afternoon for the same sea, with wet days down to under four. Waiting until May does not warm the water, and swimmers should plan on that. Our March page runs the same figures for the month before.

Is April a good time to visit Tavira?

Yes for walkers, birders, photographers and anyone who wants the old town at a temperature they can think in, and three or four nights is the usual shape, long weekend included. No for a family whose vacation is defined by the water: 63.5°F at the surface, taken as a mean of daily maxima, is not a pool.

If the answer is no, the month to prefer is not May, whose sea reads 63.4°F. Real swimming comes later in the summer, and we have no verified sea figures for those months, so we point at the calendar and give no number. May does bring 74.3°F afternoons and 3.8 wet days, the better bet for a week spent lying on sand.

What April alone offers is a 13-hour day at 69.3°F with the wide sands of the barrier island close to empty.

The last word

Decide on the water, because everything else in April holds up. Spread across its 5.3 wet days, the month’s 1.54 inches average about 0.29 inch each, which buys an umbrella and a coffee rather than a canceled plan. Book the walking days, treat any swim as a bonus, and carry the jacket for a 54.3°F dawn on the riverfront.
