ÉVORA · MAY · 1991–2020 NORMALS
Évora keeps its whole golden age inside a wall, and May is the month you can walk all of it at two in the afternoon. IPMA’s 1991–2020 normals put the average May high at 77.0°F and the average night at 51.6°F. June averages 86.4°F and pushes the same walk to breakfast and dusk.
May also takes rain off the calendar: 1.83 inches across the month against April’s 2.44, on six wet days instead of eight. What it adds is light, 14 hours and 20 minutes of it on May 15, with sunset at 8:38 p.m. and room for dinner outdoors before dark. The town itself, its addresses and its history sit in our Évora guide, and the countryside around it in the Alentejo guide.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · ÉVORA IN MAY
May is Évora’s walking month: 77.0°F afternoons, 51.6°F nights, six wet days and light until 8:38 p.m., the last month before June averages 86.4°F.
IPMA 1991–2020 NORMALS · 77.0°F DAYS · 6 RAIN DAYS · 14H 20M OF DAYLIGHT
Go for: a small dense World Heritage center walked from mid-morning to dusk, cool 51.6°F mornings, and a car day across the Alentejo that still gets you back for dinner in daylight.
Think twice before: planning a rigid two-day window around fixed opening times. We could not verify a single opening hour or admission price for any Évora monument, and one May day in five records rain.

Every figure here comes from one thermometer: IPMA station 558, in Évora itself, at 247.6 m (812 feet). Those normals describe this town, not the whole Alentejo and still less the country. High ground runs colder and far wetter, a coast has weather of its own, so nobody should pack for a mountain trail or a beach week on an Évora reading.

IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, gives May at Évora an average high of 77.0°F (25.0°C), an average low of 51.6°F (10.9°C) and 1.83 inches of rain over the month. The period is 1991 to 2020, and the instrument is station 558, a real thermometer standing at 812 feet in the town, not a model grid cell averaged across a square of landscape. That distinction matters when you are deciding what a Tuesday afternoon will feel like on your feet.
Six days in an average May record at least 0.04 inch (1 mm), and 1.4 days record 0.39 inch (10 mm) or more. Those are IPMA’s own thresholds, not the 0.10-inch line most US tables use, so the two counts do not swap. Translated into a trip: measurable rain about one day in five, one or two genuine soakings in a typical May, and roughly 25 days when the sky does nothing that needs a raincoat.
Between that night and that afternoon sits 25.4°F, and the gap arrives every day, not only on bad ones. Coffee at 7 a.m. wants long sleeves. By 4 p.m. the same street is short-sleeve weather. One packable layer, a hat and shoes for cobbles cover it, since the medieval street plan is all stone and slope. Our packing guide has the rest of the list.
May 15 brings 14 hours 20 minutes of daylight: sunrise at 6:17 a.m., sunset at 8:38 p.m. in Lisbon time. The useful end of the day therefore runs past most dinner reservations, and the Temple of Diana still has light on it at 8 p.m. Driving back to Lisbon after dinner, you set off in daylight rather than headlights.
How warm is Évora in May?
The month runs from a normal low of 51.6°F to a normal high of 77.0°F, a spread of 25.4°F. Neither figure is a record: both are averages across 30 Mays, and single days travel well beyond them. April’s spread is 22.0°F and June’s is 29.6°F, so May sits between its neighbors on how far one day moves from dawn to mid-afternoon.
You dress twice a day here. Early, under air near 51.6°F, a light jacket does the work. By early afternoon, at 77.0°F under Alentejo sun, shade and a water bottle matter more than any layer. One figure we cannot supply: we found no water-temperature reading for Évora, an inland town with no coast of its own, so we publish no swim number. Where such readings exist they are usually averages of daily maxima, a touch warmer than a 24-hour mean, and the coast belongs to the Algarve.
On frost, we could not verify a freezing-night count for May at Évora, so we give none. The normals say the average low sits at 51.6°F, close to 20 degrees above freezing, and that April’s average low is 47.3°F. Mornings in May are cool rather than cold, and a winter coat stays home.
How busy is Évora in May? Crowds, prices and booking ahead
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Évora, so we crown no month expensive and none cheap. Anyone who tells you May is the bargain or the peak is reporting a feeling. For the country-wide seasonal picture, our best-time guide does that work, and the budget arithmetic of a full trip lives in what a week in Portugal costs.
On how far ahead to book, we could not verify a lead time for Évora hotels, so we give no number of weeks. The geometry is the useful part instead. The historic center is held inside a 17th-century Vauban-style wall, built to the plans of the French engineer Nicolas de Langres, and the ring road laid around it in the 20th century helped preserve it. Beds inside that wall are a finite set, and they are the ones that put the Cathedral five minutes from your door. Book that bed first and the car second; our where-to-stay guide covers the regional choice.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for Évora, so we give no percentage and no per-night euro figure. Ask at check-in and read the fine print of your booking, since a city tax, where one applies, is normally billed on top of the room rate rather than inside it.
The one budget line that changes May itself is the rental car. With the sun up at 6:17 a.m. and down at 8:38 p.m., a car turns two nights into a wide day across the Alentejo and still returns you for dinner inside the wall. Arriving by train or bus works perfectly well for the town alone, since the walled center is walked rather than driven. Our car guide handles tolls and insurance, and getting around Portugal covers the rest.
Things to do in Évora in May: the Temple of Diana, the Cathedral and the Vauban wall

May lets you keep the middle of the day. At an average 77.0°F the whole walled center works as one continuous walk from mid-morning to dusk. June’s 86.4°F normal splits that walk into two halves with a long lunch wedged between them, and April throws 2.44 inches of rain over eight days at the same itinerary.
Begin with the Roman layer: the ruins of the Temple of Diana and stretches of Roman wall reworked in the Visigothic period, in a city inhabited since the 2nd century BC. Moorish rule ended in 1165 and left a fortified gate and the remains of the Kasbah. The Cathedral, best known of the medieval buildings, was completed in the 13th century. Then the golden age from the 15th century: the Convent of St Claire, the royal church and convent of São Francisco, and the Convent of Os Loios with its church of São João Evangelista.
Stone does not have seasons. Air does, and that is what separates the three months on the same unshaded ground at the Temple of Diana: 77.0°F in May against 86.4°F in June. One caution before you build a schedule. We could not verify a single opening hour or admission price for any Évora monument, so we quote none. Check each one the week you travel, and treat the Cathedral and the convents as ticketed until you know otherwise.
We could not verify any free-admission day at Évora either, so we promise none. What costs nothing in May is the thing UNESCO singles out: not one monument but the coherence of the minor architecture of the 16th, 17th and 18th centuries, low whitewashed houses with Dutch tiles and wrought-iron balconies along streets of medieval layout. Two 16th-century patrician houses are named in the same file, the Cordovil house and the house of Garcia de Resende. Walk the circuit of the wall too, classified under national law in 1920.
Évora in May: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on May’s clock. Out at 7 a.m., with the sun up since 6:17 and the air near its 51.6°F low, take the Roman layer first, then the Cathedral while the streets are still cool. Eat long, from 1 to 3 p.m., the hours when the 77.0°F normal peaks. Out again at 5 for the Convent of Os Loios and São João Evangelista, then the wall as the light goes gold. Sunset at 8:38 p.m. means dinner starts in daylight.
Day two belongs to the golden age: São Francisco, the Convent of St Claire, the Cordovil house and the Garcia de Resende house, with the whitewashed streets between them doing as much work as the monuments. If one of May’s six wet days lands on you, a shower is likelier than a washout, since only 1.4 days a month reach 0.39 inch. Flip the order, interiors in the morning and the walk late, and 14 hours 20 minutes of daylight still leaves a dry window.
Évora in May vs April and June
| IPMA normal, 1991–2020 | April | May | June |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 69.3°F | 77.0°F | 86.4°F |
| Average low | 47.3°F | 51.6°F | 56.8°F |
| Precipitation | 2.44 in | 1.83 in | 0.42 in |
| Days with 0.04 in (1 mm) or more | 8.0 | 6.0 | 1.7 |
| Water temperature | No reading found | No reading found | No reading found |
Three months at the same thermometer: highs of 69.3°F, 77.0°F and 86.4°F, lows of 47.3°F, 51.6°F and 56.8°F. Rain falls away fast across the sequence, 2.44 inches on 8.0 wet days in April, 1.83 on 6.0 in May, 0.42 on 1.7 in June. There is nothing to compare on water temperature, since Évora is inland and we found no reading for the town.
Shift four weeks earlier and you gain cooler walking at 69.3°F, then pay a third more rain and two extra wet days for it. Shift four weeks later and you get the driest of the three months, 0.42 inch on 1.7 wet days, at the cost of 9.4°F more heat in the afternoon. Both neighbors have their own page: Évora in April and Évora in June.
Is May a good time to visit Évora?
Yes, for a long weekend built on walking a small dense city. Afternoons at 77.0°F, nights at 51.6°F, six days of measurable rain and 14 hours 20 minutes of light on May 15 add up to a month with no enforced siesta and no raincoat week. No, if your two-day window is fixed and has to be dry, because one May day in five records rain, or if you are pairing the trip with beach days and want summer sea temperatures.
If dry matters most, June is the month to book, at 0.42 inch on 1.7 wet days, and the trade is an 86.4°F average afternoon that reorganizes the whole day around shade. If heat is the problem rather than rain, April holds afternoons at 69.3°F and charges 2.44 inches over 8.0 days for it. Our Portugal calendar sets all three against the rest of the country.
No other month combines the two things May puts together: an afternoon you can walk straight through, and a day running to 8:38 p.m. over the Historic Centre of Évora, inscribed on the World Heritage List in 1986 under criteria (ii) and (iv).
The last word
Book two nights inside the wall, give the middle of day one to the Temple of Diana and the Cathedral, and keep the second afternoon loose for the one May day in five that comes with rain. Carry one more piece of the town with you while you walk it: Jesuits taught at the University of the Holy Spirit from 1553, Évora was Portugal’s second city on the strength of it, and the university declined fast after the Company was expelled in 1759. Those college and convent buildings are still standing, free to look at from the street.
