TAVIRA · THE ALGARVE · JANUARY
An average January afternoon in Tavira reaches 61.3°F, the night falls to 46.9°F, and the water off the barrier island holds 62.0°F, a hair above the air over it. Those three readings settle most of what the month gives you: a town you can walk all day in a fleece, a lagoon still doing its work, and a beach you will look at rather than swim from.
Light and certainty are what January removes. The sun comes up over the Gilão at 7:42 in the morning and is gone by 5:39 in the evening, leaving 9 hours 57 minutes to spend on January 15. Six days in an average month record measurable rain. The Algarve in low season is a different trip from the same coast in July, and the clock does more of the planning than the sand does.

Every figure here comes from two places. The air normals are IPMA’s 1991-2020 series for station 554 at Faro, a thermometer 5.0 m above sea level, sitting just west of Tavira on the same sheltered eastern stretch of coast. The sea reading is a marine model average. Higher ground inland runs colder and far wetter, so a hill walk needs different numbers than the ones below.

Station 554 at Faro, 5.0 m above the sea, records a January average high of 61.3°F (16.3°C) and an average low of 46.9°F (8.3°C) in the 1991-2020 normals published by IPMA, the national weather service. That is a real thermometer on the same low, sheltered coastline as Tavira, rather than a reanalysis grid cell averaged over a wide box, and the two do not always agree, least of all on the overnight minimum.
Rain lands on 6.0 days in an average January, counted at 1 mm (0.04 inch) or more, with 1.8 days reaching 10 mm (0.39 inch). Translated into a calendar, that is measurable rain roughly one day in five and a genuine soaking under two days a month. IPMA counts at its own thresholds rather than the 0.10-inch line used by US tables, so the tally is not interchangeable with the one you may have read for an American city.
Between the 61.3°F afternoon and the 46.9°F night sits a gap of 14.4°F, and it closes fast once the sun is down. A fleece plus a wind layer covers daylight hours. For an evening on a river terrace, add a coat and something warmer on your legs. Rain gear is worth the suitcase space six days in thirty-one. Our packing guide has the full winter list.
On January 15 the sun rises at 7:42 am and sets at 5:39 pm, for 9 hours 57 minutes of daylight. Mainland Portugal keeps UTC through the winter, so those are clock times you can plan against with no arithmetic. Dark at twenty to six moves the day’s second walk to three in the afternoon, and makes dinner an indoor event.
Can you swim in Tavira in January? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off Tavira averages 62.0°F (16.7°C) in January in the Open-Meteo marine series for 2015-2024. Read the number carefully: it is the mean of daily maxima, not a mean across 24 hours, so it sits a shade above what a full-day average would report. By a fraction, it is also warmer than the average January afternoon on land.
At 62.0°F the water is swimmable in the technical sense and unpleasant in every other. Without neoprene, most people measure their time in minutes rather than lengths, and children measure it in seconds. A wetsuit changes the answer completely. For everyone else, January beach time is a barefoot walk with the trousers rolled, then a coffee indoors.
We found no wind or swell series for the water off Tavira in January, so we give no wave height and no wind speed. Geography still sorts the two sides of Ilha de Tavira: the ocean beach takes whatever the Atlantic sends, and the channel side of the Ria Formosa does not.
How busy is Tavira in January? Low season, booking and prices
January falls inside the Algarve’s low season. That is a calendar fact, and we can say nothing about prices beyond it: we found no occupancy series and no monthly rate series for Tavira, so we crown no month cheapest or dearest. What the calendar does carry is the split inside the month, with the New Year week running on holiday demand and the three weeks after it running on nothing in particular.
Without a rate series we will not print a booking lead time in weeks. In a low-season month the constraint is supply rather than competition: fewer kitchens and small hotels keep full schedules, and we could not verify which businesses in Tavira take an annual break in January. Call the place you want before you plan a day around it. Our where-to-stay guide sets out the regional options.
We could not verify a municipal tourist tax rate for Tavira, so we quote no per-night amount and no exemption list. Ask at check-in, and read the total on your reservation before you travel.
Pay more for heating before you pay more for anything else. The night normal is 46.9°F and the day tops out at 61.3°F, so an apartment with no working heater is cold from six in the evening until the sun clears the rooftops. Ask the question in writing before you book. A car is the second line worth the money, and our rental guide covers the tolls.
Things to do in Tavira in January

The salt pan tracks and the riverbank that turn into an oven in July are 61.3°F work in January, and the lagoon fills with wintering birds that are gone by late spring. Low sun runs all day too: from 7:42 to 5:39 the light stays at the angle that costs a photographer a five o’clock alarm in summer.
Ilha de Tavira, the barrier island opposite the town, is reached by the boat from Quatro Águas. The salinas east of the center still work their pans. In town there is the arched stone bridge over the Gilão, Santa Maria do Castelo and the castle garden above the rooftops, the Praça da República riverfront, and the covered market by the water. We could not verify January boat times or fares, so read the timetable at Quatro Águas on the day.
Across the winter the sea moves less than the air does. It runs 63.4°F in December, 62.0°F in January and 61.3°F in February, barely two degrees of spread, while the beach above it goes from full to empty enough for a long walk. On the island the wind decides the afternoon, and the return crossing gets planned around 5:39 pm instead of around dinner.
Costs nothing in any month: the riverbank, the market square, the salt pan tracks and the sand itself. We could not verify current admission at the churches or the castle, so we quote no ticket price for either.
Tavira in January: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the clock. Sunrise is 7:42, so a nine o’clock start still catches the old town in low light. Market and coffee first, then the bridge and the climb to Santa Maria do Castelo before the air reaches its 61.3°F peak in the early afternoon. Lunch inside, and take your time over it. Half past two to half past four for the salinas east of town, which is the walk you came for. Back on the riverfront by five, with the temperature already heading toward 46.9°F.
Day two goes to the island if the morning is clear: the boat from Quatro Águas, the ocean beach, 62.0°F water for a barefoot walk and nothing more, and a crossing back before dusk. If it turns out to be one of the six wet days, move inland and indoors. Faro is the nearest city with museums and covered streets, and the rail line follows the coast. Only 1.8 days in an average January reach 0.39 inch, so most rain here is a wet hour, not a wet day.
Tavira in January vs December and February
| Measure | December | January | February |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 62.8°F | 61.3°F | 62.6°F |
| Average low | 49.5°F | 46.9°F | 47.8°F |
| Precipitation | 3.54 in | 1.94 in | 1.65 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 7.0 | 6.0 | 5.4 |
| Sea surface, daily maxima | 63.4°F | 62.0°F | 61.3°F |
Across the three months, January holds the cold end of the night at 46.9°F, 2.6°F below December and 0.9°F below February. December is the wet one, 3.54 inches over 7.0 days, against January’s 1.94 inches over 6.0 and February’s 1.65 inches over 5.4. Afternoons barely separate at all: 62.8, 61.3 and 62.6. The water cools steadily through the whole stretch, 63.4°F down to 61.3°F.
Shift four weeks later and February hands you 1.3°F more afternoon warmth, 0.9°F more at night, 0.29 inch less rain and 0.6 of a wet day fewer. It takes 0.7°F off the sea, which is the wrong direction for swimmers and beside the point for everyone else. Shift four weeks earlier and December charges 1.6 inches of extra rain for 1.5°F of afternoon and the warmest water of the winter.
Is January a good time to visit Tavira?
Yes, if you are coming to walk, eat and watch birds. A 61.3°F afternoon with 1.94 inches spread over six days is good walking weather by any northern standard, and the old town holds up in winter because it is a town before it is a resort. No, if the trip is built on the beach: 62.0°F water and a 5:39 sunset will not produce the Algarve of the photographs.
If the answer is no, February is the smallest useful shift, drier at 1.65 inches, milder by 1.3°F in the afternoon and 0.6 of a wet day quieter, at the cost of the coldest water of the winter. For swimming that lasts longer than a dare, wait for the warm half of the year and pick the week with our twelve-month verdict.
In this stretch of winter, January alone has December’s rain behind it, 1.94 inches against 3.54, with the sea not yet down to February’s 61.3°F.
The last word
Decide on the walking, not the water. If a week of 61.3°F afternoons on salt pan tracks and river cobbles sounds like your trip, January delivers it with room to spare: twenty-five days of an average January record no measurable rain at all at the Faro gauge. If you need the sea, the month is a long look at it from the sand. Book a room with heating you can switch on, and save the island crossing for the first clear morning.
