COIMBRA · JUNE · IPMA NORMALS 1991–2020
June hands Coimbra its longest days of the year and dries out the Mondego valley after a soggy spring. The valley station logs 1.02 inches of rain across the month against 2.55 inches in May, and on the 15th the sun is still up at 9:06 p.m., which puts the climb from Sofia Street to the university hill comfortably after dinner.
What the month takes back is the cool. Afternoons average 79.3°F, and the hill between the two halves of the UNESCO property is a climb in any weather. If your dates are elastic, the table below sets June against May and July in degrees, inches and wet days, and our May guide argues the other side.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · COIMBRA IN JUNE
June gives Coimbra 15 hours of daylight and only 3.7 wet days, at the price of 79.3°F afternoons on a hill you will climb twice a day.

Two sources carry the numbers below: IPMA’s 1991–2020 normals for the weather, and the UNESCO file for what stands on the hill. For the other eleven months of the country, our best-time guide runs the full calendar, and getting around Portugal covers the trains that bring you in.
Coimbra weather in June: average highs, lows and rain days
| June normal | Value |
|---|---|
| Average high | 79.3°F (26.3°C) |
| Average low | 57.6°F (14.2°C) |
| Total precipitation | 1.02 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 3.7 |
| Days with 0.39 in or more | 0.8 |
| Daylight on June 15 | 15 h 05 min |
IPMA, the national weather service, gives June at Coimbra as an average high of 79.3°F, an average low of 57.6°F and 1.02 inches of precipitation over 1991–2020. Every figure here comes from station 707 at Coimbra Bencanta, a real thermometer 26.6 meters above sea level on the floor of the Mondego valley, not a model grid cell. That matters for what you pack: high ground inland runs colder and far wetter, the coast west of the city keeps its own weather, and a valley reading is no basis for a mountain trail.
Measurable rain, at IPMA’s threshold of 1 mm or 0.04 inch, falls on 3.7 days in an average June, roughly one day in eight. The heavier kind, 0.39 inch or more in a day, averages 0.8 day, so a genuine soaking is a once-a-June event at most. Watch the threshold when you compare tables: American summaries usually count days at 0.10 inch, a higher bar, and the two counts do not line up. Most June days here run dry from sunrise to sunset.
Between the 57.6°F dawn and the 79.3°F mid-afternoon sits a spread of 21.7°F, which is two outfits in one bag rather than one. Carry a light layer for the first hour on the hill and for the terrace after nine, short sleeves for everything in between. Granite cobbles and a long climb also argue for shoes with grip, a point our packing guide makes for the whole country.
On June 15 the sun rises at 6:02 a.m. and sets at 9:06 p.m. in Lisbon time, about 15 hours 5 minutes of daylight by the sunrise-sunset.org tables, the longest stretch the city gets all year. Dinner at eight happens in full light. An early start costs very little sleep, since the day begins before six-thirty anyway, and it buys the stretch between Sofia Street and the Alta before the heat arrives.
How warm is Coimbra in June?
The 79.3°F high is a month of afternoons averaged together, not a ceiling, and individual June days sit well above it and well below it. The 57.6°F low does the same work at the other end of the clock, averaging the coldest reading of each night. Between the two, 21.7°F of daily swing is a bigger number than most travelers expect from a Portuguese summer month.
In practice, a sweater or a light jacket earns its place at 7 a.m. and again once the sun drops behind the hill, and nothing heavier is needed all month. Midday asks the opposite question: the climb to the Alta at 2 p.m. in 79.3°F air is the hottest thing you will do in Coimbra, so water, a hat and a slower pace beat any clever routing.
We found no frost-day count for June in the IPMA table we read, and a 57.6°F average low sits more than 25 degrees clear of freezing, so nobody plans for it. Swimming is a different matter: we could not verify a sea-surface temperature for the Atlantic beaches west of the city, nor a river figure for the Mondego, so we give no water temperature. Coimbra is an inland university town, and the coast belongs to the country calendar.
How busy is Coimbra in June? Crowds, booking and the tourist tax
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Coimbra, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What the calendar does say is plain enough: June brings the longest daylight of the year and the first dry weather after a 2.55-inch May, and July that follows is drier still at 0.35 inch. Those are the conditions that shape demand in a summer city, and our Portugal trip cost guide handles the euros.
Book the bed before you book anything inside the university. The inscribed property covers 36.2 hectares, about 89 acres, split between two components in the old town, with a buffer zone of 80.8 hectares around them, and the beds worth having sit inside that footprint or just below it. We could not verify how far ahead Coimbra fills in June, so we give no lead time in weeks. Our where-to-stay guide covers the national pattern, and flights from the US the long leg.
On the tourist tax, we could not verify whether Coimbra levies one, or at what nightly rate, so no euro figure appears. Ask the property when you reserve and add it to the total yourself rather than trusting a headline price.
One upgrade genuinely changes the month, and it is location rather than luxury. A room on the hill instead of down by the river turns the 79.3°F afternoon climb into a five-minute walk back for a break, and with sunset at 9:06 p.m. you will make that trip twice a day whether you planned to or not.
Things to do in Coimbra in June: the Joanine Library, Sofia Street and the Botanical Garden

Almost everything between Sofia Street and the hilltop happens outdoors, with the buildings as punctuation, and June funds that with 15 hours of light and 3.7 wet days against May’s 8.5. The month lets you split the day in a way spring cannot: the Alta in the morning, a long break at the bottom of the hill, then Sofia and the Botanical Garden from six, still in full sun.
The property, listed as University of Coimbra, Alta and Sofia, runs to 36.2 hectares in two components. The Alta holds the Royal Palace of Alcáçova, which the university moved into in 1537, St Michael’s Chapel and the Joanine Library with its baroque decor, plus the colleges of Jesus, Holy Trinity, St Jerome, St Benedict, St Anthony of the Quarry and St Rita. Downhill, Sofia Street lines up nine more colleges, among them the old Royal College of the Arts used by the Inquisition.
Stone interiors hold their own temperature all year. The air outside does not, and that gap is what makes June different from January on the same hill. At 79.3°F, the Botanical Garden, added in the 18th century alongside the chemistry laboratories and the University Press, is a morning or an evening rather than a 3 p.m. plan. UNESCO also flags a caveat for the view: the university’s visibility as a citadel of learning depends on its hilltop position, and large-scale building in the surrounding landscape has already altered that setting.
The outdoor half needs no ticket desk. Sofia Street is a public street, and the walk past its colleges to the 12th-century Cathedral of Santa Cruz, then up to the 1940s University City that was inscribed along with the medieval and baroque core, costs nothing but the climb. We could not verify any free-admission day or reduced evening rate in June, so we promise none.
Coimbra in June: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts at 7 a.m., with the valley still close to its 57.6°F low: Sofia Street from the bottom, its nine colleges, then the climb to the Alta by nine. Give the middle of the day to interiors, the Alcáçova palace, St Michael’s Chapel and the Joanine Library, and come down by one for a long lunch. Go back up at six, when the 79.3°F afternoon has broken and the Botanical Garden still has three hours of light. Sunset at 9:06 p.m. is the cue for dinner.
Day two takes the rest: the Cathedral of Santa Cruz among the university buildings, the University Press and the 18th-century laboratory wing, and the University City of the 1940s at the edge of the inscription. Should the month’s 0.8 heavy-rain day land on you, invert the order and keep interiors from ten to four, with the street walk in whatever the evening offers. With 3.7 wet days out of 30, a whole washed-out trip is not the scenario to plan for.
Coimbra in June vs May and July
| Month | Average high | Average low | Precipitation | Days with 0.04 in or more |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| May | 73.9°F | 53.2°F | 2.55 in | 8.5 |
| June | 79.3°F | 57.6°F | 1.02 in | 3.7 |
| July | 83.3°F | 60.1°F | 0.35 in | 1.7 |
June lands squarely between the two, 5.4°F warmer than May by day and 4.0°F cooler than July, with 1.02 inches of rain against 2.55 and 0.35. The wet-day count moves furthest: 8.5 days in May, 3.7 in June, 1.7 in July, all measured at the same 0.04-inch threshold by the same valley station. Nights climb on the same slope, 53.2°F, then 57.6°F, then 60.1°F. No water temperature enters any column, because we hold none.
Push the trip four weeks later and you gain two fewer wet days and a nearly rainless 0.35 inch, paying with 83.3°F afternoons on the climb and nights that no longer cool below 60.1°F. Pull it four weeks earlier and the trade reverses: 73.9°F days walk easier, while 8.5 wet days against 3.7 more than doubles your odds of a gray one. The May page runs the same station numbers from that side.
Is June a good time to visit Coimbra?
Yes for anyone whose trip is a walking trip. A city built on a hill, with its two listed components 36.2 hectares apart in spirit and a few hundred meters in fact, is best served by long light and dry pavement, and June supplies both. No for travelers who want the driest possible fortnight and do not mind heat, and no for anyone counting on beach days we cannot put a number on.
If that is you, take July: 0.35 inch of rain and 1.7 wet days is as close to a guarantee as a normal ever gets, and the cost is 4.0°F more on the thermometer at the hour you climb. Travelers who would rather walk cool than walk dry should look at May instead, accepting 8.5 wet days for 73.9°F afternoons.
One thing June alone offers: 15 hours 5 minutes of daylight on the 15th, over a month that counts only 3.7 wet days.
The last word
Sleep on the hill, start before seven, and let the 9:06 p.m. sunset do the rest of the scheduling. Carry one fact up with you: the property was inscribed in 2013 under criteria (ii), (iv) and (vi), with a minor boundary change in 2019, and the third of those criteria rests on something living rather than built, since UNESCO credits the university with keeping its student traditions and ceremonies in continuous use. From an academy of the late 13th century, this hill set the institutional and architectural model for universities across the Lusophone world.
