ERICEIRA · JULY · 38.96° N
Ericeira in July arrives with the least rain of the three summer months on the official record: 0.11 inch for the whole month, and 0.4 days that reach even 0.04 inch. Afternoons average 82.9°F (28.3°C), mornings start around 64.4°F (18.0°C), and on July 15 the light runs 14 hours 39 minutes, from 6:22 am to 9:02 pm local time.
That combination is the whole case for the date: beach plans that rarely need a fallback, and an evening long enough to use. What July takes away is the quiet, and a water temperature we are not able to quote.

Go for: beach and surf days without an indoor plan B, 14 hours 39 minutes of daylight on July 15, and dinner outdoors while it is still light.
Think twice before: counting on a water-temperature figure. We could not verify one for Ericeira, and published tables of that kind usually average daily maxima, which reads warmer than a true 24-hour mean.

The numbers below come from one thermometer and one calculator: IPMA’s 1991–2020 normals for station 579 at Lisboa Gago Coutinho, and sunrise-sunset.org for the light. For the town itself, our Ericeira guide handles the beds, the breaks and the drive from Lisbon, and Portugal’s best-time page carries the twelve-month argument.
Ericeira weather in July: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | July normal |
|---|---|
| Average high | 82.9°F (28.3°C) |
| Average low | 64.4°F (18.0°C) |
| Precipitation, whole month | 0.11 in |
| Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more | 0.4 |
| Days with 10 mm (0.39 in) or more | 0.1 |
| Daylight on July 15 | 14 h 39 min |
IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, publishes the 1991–2020 normals served here: average high 82.9°F (28.3°C), average low 64.4°F (18.0°C), and 0.11 inch of precipitation across the whole of July. That is a real thermometer, station 579 at Lisboa Gago Coutinho, sitting at 103.9 meters, not a model grid cell. IPMA attaches its own warning, and every figure here inherits it: the gauge stands inland at Lisbon’s airport, while Ericeira is an exposed surf coast. High ground inland is colder and far wetter, so nobody should pack for a mountain trail on a coastal reading.
Rain in a July like this is an event rather than a pattern. IPMA counts 0.4 days reaching 1 mm (0.04 inch). That works out to four wet days spread across ten Julys: two Julys in five hand you one, the other three hand you none. One caveat matters if you cross-check against an American table. The 1 mm mark is IPMA’s threshold, while US summaries usually count days at 0.10 inch, so the two sets of counts are not interchangeable.
Between the average high and the average low sits 18.5°F, and July delivers that spread daily rather than occasionally. Mornings at 64.4°F want a layer over the swimsuit, and the same layer is dead weight by three in the afternoon. Pack for both ends instead of the average: one light layer for early and late, sun protection for the middle hours, a windproof shell for the clifftops. Our packing guide runs the full list for the country.
On July 15 the sun rises at 6:22 am and sets at 9:02 pm local time, for 14 hours 39 minutes of daylight (sunrise-sunset.org computes 05:22 and 20:02 UTC, and Portugal runs an hour ahead in summer). The practical effect is a second half to the day. The sand is still usable at seven, dinner starts in daylight, and the last of the light goes near nine, so anything you drive to can be done after the heat instead of through it.
How warm is Ericeira in July? Air and sea temperatures
Air first, since air is what the normals measure. July’s average high reads 82.9°F and its average low 64.4°F, an 18.5°F gap between the coolest hour before sunrise and the warmest stretch of mid-afternoon. Neither end is extreme for a beach month. A normal is the average of thirty Julys, so single days land above and below both figures without making the month unusual.
In practice that means two outfits inside one day. Mornings at 64.4°F take a layer and often a wind shell on the cliffs; afternoons at 82.9°F take shade and water. On the sea we have to stop short: we could not verify a sea-surface temperature series for Ericeira, so we give no water figure. If you find one elsewhere, read its fine print, because tables of that sort usually average daily maxima, which runs a shade warmer than a true 24-hour mean. That difference is exactly what decides a wetsuit.
Frost is not a July question on this coast. The month’s normal low of 64.4°F sits more than 30 degrees above freezing, and IPMA’s July normals for station 579 give us no frost-day count to report. The nuance that does apply is the one IPMA raises itself. Its numbers come from an inland airport, and an exposed Atlantic shoreline does not read the same, so treat 64.4°F as the neighborhood rather than the figure on your balcony.
How busy is Ericeira in July? Crowds, prices and booking ahead
July sits in the middle of the European summer holiday season. That is a fact of the calendar, not a measurement, and the measurement is what we lack: we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Ericeira, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What IPMA does let us say is that July is the driest of the three summer months at 0.11 inch, against 0.53 inch in June and 0.20 inch in August.
Booking earlier is our advice, not our data. We could not verify lead times for this town, so take the next line as editorial: a small coastal place in high summer fills its walkable beds before its outlying ones, and the car you want is the one reserved with the flight instead of at the counter. Our car-rental guide covers the Portuguese quirks, and the trip-cost guide sets the three budget tiers for the country.
On tax we prefer nothing to something vague. We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for Ericeira, so we give no per-night amount and no percentage. Ask the property what it collects and whether the quote includes it, then read the final line of the booking page before paying. Our know-before-you-go guide handles the paperwork side, entry rules included.
If one budget line deserves the upgrade in July, it is the walking distance from bed to water. With usable light until 9:02 pm, an evening swim and a late dinner both fit, and a room you have to drive back to at that hour spends the part of the day the month hands you free. Everything else, the car included, can be the cheap version. Where to stay in Portugal frames the choice by region.
Things to do in Ericeira in July

A July week here rarely needs an indoor fallback: 0.11 inch of rain for the month, and 0.4 days reaching 0.04 inch. The odds of losing an afternoon are small enough that a museum day becomes a choice instead of insurance. June cannot promise that, with 2.0 wet days and 0.53 inch. The clock adds the second advantage. Light to 9:02 pm turns two beaches in one day into an ordinary plan.
The beaches sort themselves by what you came for. In town, Praia dos Pescadores lies below the old fishing quarter and Praia do Sul is a short walk from it, both close enough to reach dinner on foot. North along the coast, Ribeira d’Ilhas and Coxos are the reef breaks that made the town’s name, with São Lourenço further up. South, Foz do Lizandro spreads wide and shallow where the river meets the sea, and that is where most families settle. We hold no admission price or parking count for any of them, so we quote none.
July changes the air at these places, not their shape. The reefs and the river mouth look the same in January; the difference is walking out of the water into an 82.9°F afternoon. Measured against the two neighboring months the move is modest, 3.9°F above June’s average high and 1.3°F below August’s. The 18.5°F daily swing is the figure to plan around, and it explains why early and late, rather than noon, are the comfortable hours on this coast.
The free part of July is the shoreline. Beach access, the cliff paths between one cove and the next, and a 9:02 pm sunset cost nothing, and the long evening makes them the best hours of the day. We could not verify a free-admission day or any July festival date for Ericeira, so we name none. Nazaré up the coast and Sintra inland are the paid day trips if a beach week wants a change.
Ericeira in July: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Out by seven for the in-town beaches while the air is still near its 64.4°F low, breakfast afterward, then the streets and the fish counters while the sun climbs. Take shade between one and four, when the day sits closest to 82.9°F: a long lunch, a nap, a drive with the windows up. Back to the water at five, north to Ribeira d’Ilhas to watch the surf, dinner at eight with an hour of daylight left.
Day two goes south and then inland. Morning at Foz do Lizandro, where the shallow river mouth suits children, then the drive to Sintra for the afternoon, and back on the coast for the 9:02 pm sunset. If a wet day does land on you, reverse the halves and give the rain to the inland drive. Our getting-around guide covers the bus and train options when there is no car.
Ericeira in July vs June and August
| Measure | June | July | August |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 79.0°F (26.1°C) | 82.9°F (28.3°C) | 84.2°F (29.0°C) |
| Average low | 61.7°F (16.5°C) | 64.4°F (18.0°C) | 65.3°F (18.5°C) |
| Precipitation | 0.53 in | 0.11 in | 0.20 in |
| Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more | 2.0 | 0.4 | 1.0 |
| Sea temperature | Not verified | Not verified | Not verified |
Side by side, these are not three versions of the same month. June averages a 79.0°F high and a 61.7°F low with 0.53 inch of rain over 2.0 wet days. July cuts the rain to 0.11 inch and 0.4 wet days while lifting the high to 82.9°F. August is the warmest of the three at 84.2°F over a 65.3°F low, and it gives some rain back at 0.20 inch and 1.0 wet day. On the water we stay silent, having verified no sea temperature for any of the three.
Shift four weeks back and you trade 3.9°F off the afternoon for nearly five times July’s rain total and five times its wet-day count. Our June page runs those numbers in full. Shift four weeks forward and you gain 1.3°F, pay with 0.20 inch and a wet day, and share the coast with the rest of Europe’s holidays. Neither shift touches the daily 18.5°F swing, and that is the figure that sets your bag.
Is July a good time to visit Ericeira?
Yes for beach and surf weeks, and yes for anyone whose plans collapse in rain: 0.11 inch and 0.4 wet days is the lowest of the three summer months IPMA records at this station. No for travelers who want the shoulder-season version of the town, and no for anyone hoping we can promise a bargain, since we hold no price data in either direction. Heat-averse visitors should work from the 82.9°F average, because the extremes are not something we can quantify.
If the answer is no, June still averages a 79.0°F high before the holiday weeks fill up, and it pays for that in its rain column: 0.53 inch over 2.0 wet days. Ericeira in June sets out the trade in detail. If warmth is the point and holiday company is tolerable, August adds 1.3°F to the afternoons. Portugal’s best-time guide takes the argument out to all twelve months.
One pairing belongs to July alone among the three: 0.11 inch of rain for the month alongside 14 hours 39 minutes of daylight on the 15th. That is a full beach day with an evening left over.
The last word
Settle the bed first, then let the clock plan the rest: with light from 6:22 am to 9:02 pm, a July day here works as two half-days instead of one long hot one. One more figure from the same normals, held back until now: IPMA counts 0.1 day a July at 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more, which amounts to a single real soaking across ten Julys. So pack one thin shell for the cliff wind, leave the umbrella, and book the room you can walk home to.
