FARO · NOVEMBER · IPMA STATION 554
Faro in November runs at 67.3°F in the afternoon and 53.4°F before dawn, which is jacket weather with the jacket coming off by eleven. The lanes inside the old walls go quiet, the Ria Formosa empties and refills twice a day behind its barrier islands, and the piers by the marina work for the island boats rather than for the summer queue. Light is the real constraint: 10 hours 14 minutes on November 15, sunset at 5:23 pm local.
What the month takes off the table is the beach week. Rain totals 2.97 inches across 6.6 wet days and the sea averages 65.3°F, so swimming becomes a short, deliberate act rather than an afternoon. What it gives back is a walking city at a temperature you can walk in, a lagoon full of wintering birds, and a two-night weekend that needs no crowd strategy. If sand is the whole point of the trip, our October page is the better read.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · FARO IN NOVEMBER
November gives Faro 67.3°F afternoons, a 65.3°F sea and roughly one wet day in five: a walking, lagoon and day-trip month, not a beach week.
IPMA STATION 554 · 1991–2020 NORMALS · 10H 14M OF LIGHT ON NOV 15 · NO EVENT DATES VERIFIED
Go for: the walled old town and the Ria Formosa boardwalks at 67.3°F, wintering birds on the mudflats, and a two-night city weekend that fits inside 10 hours of daylight.
Think twice before: booking a beach week. The sea averages 65.3°F and 2.7 November days bring 0.39 inch of rain or more.

Three sources carry this month: IPMA for the air and the rain, the Open-Meteo marine series for the sea, and sunrise tables for the light. Every figure below is one of those three, or simple arithmetic on them.
Faro weather in November: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | November normal |
|---|---|
| Average high | 67.3°F (19.6°C) |
| Average low | 53.4°F (11.9°C) |
| Precipitation | 2.97 in |
| Days with 0.04 in (1 mm) or more | 6.6 |
| Days with 0.39 in (10 mm) or more | 2.7 |
| Sea surface (mean of daily maxima) | 65.3°F |
| Daylight on November 15 | 10h 14m |
Every figure here comes from a real thermometer: IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, station 554 at Faro, 5 meters (16 feet) above sea level, normals for 1991 to 2020. That distinction matters, because a model grid cell and a coastal station can disagree by whole degrees. The normals give a November average high of 67.3°F, an average low of 53.4°F and 2.97 inches of rain. They describe the eastern Algarve coast at sea level and nothing more. Inland high ground is colder and far wetter, and the western end of the coast keeps its own weather.
In an average November, 6.6 days record at least 0.04 inch (1 mm) of rain, which works out at roughly one day in five, and 2.7 of those deliver 0.39 inch (10 mm) or more. Read as a trip, that is a fortnight of workable weather with two or three genuinely wet days scattered through it. Carry one caveat with the count: those are IPMA’s thresholds, not the 0.10-inch line most American tables use, so the numbers are not interchangeable with what you saw on a US forecast site.
The spread between 67.3°F and 53.4°F is 13.9 degrees, and it sits at the two ends of the day. Early mornings and anything after sunset want a real layer, the middle of the day rarely does. Pack a light shell for the heavy days, one warm layer for the dark hours, and shoes that handle wet cobbles, of which the old town has plenty. Our Portugal packing guide has the full list.
Portugal is on winter time through November, so the useful day is short and front-loaded. On November 15 the sun rises at 7:09 am and sets at 5:23 pm local, giving 10 hours 14 minutes. Put the lagoon, the islands and any driving in the morning, and treat 4 pm as the last hour of decent light rather than mid-afternoon. Dinner in Faro starts long after dark, and a day that ended at 5:23 has plenty of room for it.
Can you swim in Faro in November? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea off Faro averages 65.3°F in November. That figure is the mean of daily maxima from 2015 to 2024 in the Open-Meteo marine series, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour average, and tables built on 24-hour means will read slightly cooler for the same water. Either way the Atlantic here is past its September best and not yet at its winter low: December comes in at 63.4°F, only two degrees further down.
You can swim at 65.3°F, and people do. It is cold at the first step and tolerable once you are moving, which is the whole character of an Atlantic autumn. Treat it as a swim rather than an afternoon in the water: adults last a short stretch, children rather less, and anyone surfing or paddling for longer than a dip puts on a wetsuit. October’s water is two degrees warmer and that gap shows more in practice than it does on paper.
We found no wind or wave series for Faro in November, so we give no figures for either. Geography still tells you something. The city faces the Ria Formosa rather than the open ocean, and the barrier islands take the swell before it reaches the channels. Praia de Faro sits on the seaward side of that sand, so the water there behaves like open coast while the lagoon behind stays flat. Check a marine forecast the morning you go, not the week before.
How busy is Faro in November? Crowds, prices and booking ahead
November is out of season on the calendar: European school holidays are done, and the Algarve’s summer machinery has wound down. What we cannot do is rank the months by money. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Faro, so we crown no month cheapest and quote no nightly figure. The price signals we can stand behind are fixed ones, and a fixed price does not move with the date.
That leaves judgment, and we label it as such. A November weekend in Faro does not need the lead time an August one does, and the old town holds rooms closer in. The car is where we would hedge: reserve it as early as you would in July, because a free cancellation costs nothing and a shortage on arrival costs you a day. Book flights when the schedule suits, the room a few weeks out, the car first. Our car rental guide covers the traps.
On the tourist tax we came up empty. We could not verify whether Faro applies a municipal per-night levy in November, or at what rate, so we give no percentage and no euro figure. If a line appears at checkout, that is the municipality’s number and not ours. What a week in Portugal costs sets out the budget lines we were able to confirm.
If one line of the budget deserves the extra money this month, it is heating. Nights average 53.4°F, and southern Portuguese buildings are made to shed heat rather than hold it, so filter for heating before you book and read the most recent winter reviews. That single upgrade changes how the month feels indoors. A terrace with a sea view, which you will use for the ten minutes either side of a 5:23 pm sunset, does not.
Things to do in Faro in November: the old town, the lagoon and the islands

November does one thing summer cannot: it makes the middle of the day the good part. At 67.3°F you can cross the whole walled town on foot, climb a bell tower and walk a salt-marsh boardwalk between lunch and sunset without hunting for shade. The lagoon changes character too, filling with wintering birds, so the mudflats that August visitors pass at speed are the reason to come now.
Write down four names. The Ria Formosa Natural Park starts at the edge of the city, its channels and salt pans running east toward Olhão. Ilha Deserta, Barreta on the charts, is the uninhabited barrier island reached by boat from the Porta Nova pier. Praia de Faro is the ocean-side sand strip out along the airport road, reachable by bus or car. And the walled Cidade Velha, entered under the Arco da Vila, holds the cathedral and its tower.
Between October and November the air gives up 6.6 degrees while the water gives up 2.0, and that closing gap is the season in one line. An ocean that felt bracing against an October afternoon feels almost neutral against a 67.3°F one. Same walls, same boardwalks, different arithmetic: the islands become a trip for the walk and the birds rather than for the swim, and a noon crossing of the marsh is more comfortable now than at any point in summer.
Free this month, and free in any other: the circuit of the old walls and the gate at the Arco da Vila, the marina and waterfront promenade, and the paths through the salt pans and pine at Ludo, behind the airport, where the birding is. The beach itself costs a bus fare or a parking space. Ask at the desk when you arrive about free museum hours.
Faro in November: a two-day itinerary
Day one is built on a 7:09 sunrise and a 5:23 sunset. Coffee at 8:30, then the Cidade Velha while the walls still hold shade: in under the Arco da Vila, around the cathedral square, up the tower for the lagoon view. Late morning, take a boat out to Ilha Deserta if the operator is running, since the water is calmer and the light better before noon. Lunch at the marina around 1:30, the warmest hour of the day. Keep 3:30 to 5:20 for the waterfront, and eat late.
Day two goes to Praia de Faro, out along the airport road, timed for the 67.3°F middle of the day rather than for breakfast. Give the afternoon back to the town: the bone chapel at the Igreja do Carmo, the covered market, an early dinner. If one of the month’s 2.7 heavy days lands on you, drive east to Tavira or keep the morning under cover in the market and the churches, and hold the sand for the next clear afternoon.
Faro in November vs October and December
| Measure | October | November | December |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 73.9°F | 67.3°F | 62.8°F |
| Average low | 60.4°F | 53.4°F | 49.5°F |
| Precipitation | 2.20 in | 2.97 in | 3.54 in |
| Days with 0.04 in (1 mm) or more | 6.0 | 6.6 | 7.0 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 67.3°F | 65.3°F | 63.4°F |
The afternoon falls in two uneven steps, 6.6 degrees from October to November and 4.5 more into December, while the nights drop from 60.4°F to 53.4 to 49.5. Rain climbs the other way, 2.20 to 2.97 to 3.54 inches, with wet days going 6.0, 6.6, 7.0. The sea trails the air, as it always does: 67.3°F, then 65.3, then 63.4. All three columns come from the same IPMA station and the same marine series, so the steps compare cleanly instead of being stitched from different tables.
Move four weeks earlier and you buy 6.6 degrees of afternoon and a 67.3°F sea, at the cost of a busier old town and less slack on rooms. Move four weeks later and you lose another 4.5 degrees, add 0.57 inch of rain, and meet whatever the holiday weeks do to prices, which we could not verify. For swimming, October wins on the only number that counts. For walking, birds and quiet streets, November takes it, and December is a city break with a raincoat.
Is November a good time to visit Faro?
Yes if the trip runs on walking, food, birds and day trips into the rest of the Algarve, no if it runs on the water. Afternoons at 67.3°F with 6.6 wet days make good touring weather for a November anywhere in the northern hemisphere, and the town is small enough to cover on foot in two days. A family expecting beach mornings will get one or two at best and spend the rest wondering where the brochure went.
If the answer came out no, the fix is October rather than a leap to spring: 73.9°F days, a 67.3°F sea and only 0.6 more dry days per month than November keep a beach week alive at the tail of the season. Our October guide runs the same figures. If the flights only work in deep winter, take December, plan indoors, and check the countrywide view in the best-time guide.
What November alone puts together is wintering birds on the mudflats, an old town you can cross at midday in shirtsleeves, and a 10-hour 14-minute day that shapes a two-night weekend rather than sprawling past it.
The last word
Book two nights, keep the mornings free, and take the car if the eastern lagoon towns are on the list. One figure to leave with: October’s sea reaches 67.3°F, the exact number November’s afternoons average, so this is the month when the air finally matches last month’s water and both settle at mild rather than warm. Pack for that: one warm layer, a light shell for the 2.7 heavy days, and shoes you do not mind getting wet.
