COIMBRA · APRIL · THE MONDEGO VALLEY
April is when the walk up to the university stops being a chore. Afternoons in Coimbra average 68.9°F, the light holds past eight in the evening, and the stone hill of the old town is climbable at noon without anyone arriving at the top in need of a lie-down. The trade is written in the same record: April is the wettest of the three spring months here, at 3.33 inches.
So this is a month you plan around showers rather than heat. Ten or eleven April days bring measurable rain, and almost three bring a real soaking, which decides the order of a day far more than it decides whether to come. Pack for a 20-degree swing between dawn and mid-afternoon and the month behaves.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · COIMBRA · APRIL
April gives Coimbra 13 hours 21 minutes of daylight and afternoons at 68.9°F, in exchange for the wettest of the three spring months at 3.33 inches and 10.6 days of measurable rain.
AVG HIGH 68.9°F · AVG LOW 48.9°F · 10.6 WET DAYS · SUNSET 8:14 P.M. ON APRIL 15
Go for: walking the 36.2-hectare UNESCO core between showers, the Botanical Garden in leaf, and light on the hill until 8:14 p.m.
Think twice before: booking a week that needs to be dry. April carries 10.6 wet days at Bencanta, 2.8 of them at 0.39 inch or more.

Most American trips reach Coimbra by train from Lisbon or Porto, and our getting-around guide has the options; the flights guide covers the routes in. What the date changes is the weather, the light and what fits between showers. Every figure here comes from one thermometer, IPMA’s station 707 at Coimbra Bencanta, 26.6 meters up in the Mondego valley, and it describes that valley. High ground nearby is colder and considerably wetter, so do not pack for a mountain trail on a river-town reading.
Coimbra weather in April: average highs, lows and rain days
| April in Coimbra | Normal, 1991-2020 |
|---|---|
| Average high | 68.9°F (20.5°C) |
| Average low | 48.9°F (9.4°C) |
| Precipitation | 3.33 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 10.6 |
| Days with 0.39 in or more | 2.8 |
| Daylight on April 15 | 13h 21m |
These are the 1991-2020 normals published by IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, measured at its Bencanta station on the valley floor. That matters: a station normal comes from an instrument someone maintains, not from a model grid cell averaged over a chunk of landscape. An average April here runs 68.9°F by day, 48.9°F overnight and 3.33 inches of rain across the month.
Rain reaches the gauge on 10.6 days, roughly one day in three, and only 2.8 of those reach 0.39 inch. Most wet April days in Coimbra are therefore a shower with dry hours on either side, not a washout. One caution on the counts: IPMA measures at 1 mm and 10 mm thresholds, while American tables usually count days at 0.10 inch, so the two sets of rain-day figures are not interchangeable.
Between the average night and the average afternoon sits exactly 20.0°F. A single layer will be wrong twice a day. The working kit is a shirt, a light sweater you can carry from eleven onward, a shell for the showers and shoes with grip, because the old town is cobbled and it runs uphill in almost every direction. Our packing guide has the rest of the country’s list.
Daylight on April 15 lasts 13 hours 21 minutes, with the sun up at 6:53 a.m. and down at 8:14 p.m. local time. Evenings are the reward: the hill stays lit while you are still at the table, and an afternoon lost to rain can be repaid after six with two hours of usable light.
How warm is Coimbra in April, morning and afternoon?
Two numbers frame the day. The average high is 68.9°F, the average low 48.9°F, and the 20.0°F between them is the widest thing about April in this valley. It is a month of cold starts and mild, unhurried afternoons rather than one steady temperature you can dress for once.
In practice, breakfast wants a jacket and the two o’clock climb to the university does not. Locals shed layers on the way up the hill and put them back on when the sun drops behind the buildings, which happens early in narrow streets even in a long-daylight month. A day bag that can swallow a sweater is worth more here than any specialist clothing.
On frost: we hold monthly normals only, with no count of freezing nights and no daily extremes for Bencanta. An average low of 48.9°F sits well above freezing, but a monthly mean says nothing about the coldest night of any given April, and we did not find a frost-day series for this station, so we give no number.
How busy is Coimbra in April? Crowds, prices and the lodging tax
We looked for occupancy figures and monthly hotel rates for Coimbra and found none, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we can measure is the footprint the visitors land on: the inscribed property covers 36.2 hectares with an 80.8-hectare buffer zone, split into two components inside the old town. Whatever the season does to numbers, it does it on one hill and one street.
That turns booking into a question of sequence rather than price. Take the room first, ideally in or just under the old town, then settle which day goes to the interiors, because we hold no opening hour and no admission fee for the Joanine Library or for any other building in the property. Check the university’s own visitor pages when you book. Two nights covers a two-day visit, three if you want the Mondego bank and a day trip.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for Coimbra either, so no percentage and no per-night amount appears anywhere here. Ask at check-in whether a city tax is added to the room, and treat figures you read elsewhere as unchecked by us. For the shape of a week’s spending across the country, our cost guide prices it out.
If one line of the budget deserves the upgrade in April, it is distance to bed. With rain measurable on about a third of days, a room a short walk from the Alta turns a downpour into a pause instead of a stranded afternoon in a café on the wrong side of town. Our where-to-stay guide compares the country’s bases if Coimbra is one stop of several.
Things to do in Coimbra in April: the Alta, Sofia Street and the Botanical Garden

April hands you the one combination a hill town needs: 13 hours 21 minutes of daylight and an afternoon that stays under 70°F. You can cross both halves of the UNESCO core on foot at midday, spend the last warm hour in a garden, and still have light at eight for the walk back down. Summer gives the light without the cool, and the gardens are at their greenest now.
The property is the University of Coimbra, Alta and Sofia, inscribed in 2013 under criteria (ii), (iv) and (vi), with a minor boundary modification in 2019. It runs to 36.2 hectares in two parts. The Alta holds the Royal Palace of Alcáçova, where the university was installed in 1537, St Michael’s Chapel, the Joanine Library with its baroque decor, and the colleges of Jesus, Holy Trinity, St Jerome, St Benedict, St Anthony of the Quarry and St Rita. Sofia Street carries nine more, including the old Royal College of the Arts used by the Inquisition.
A baroque reading room does not have a season. The air does, and that is where April earns its place: 2.5°F warmer by day than March, 5.0°F cooler than May. So the month sets the order rather than the list. Walk the outdoor half first, the Botanical Garden and the University Press among the 18th-century additions in the Alta, and hold the chapel and the library for the hours when one of the 2.8 heavy days makes the decision for you.
We found no free-admission scheme for any of these buildings, so we name none. What costs nothing is the walking: Sofia Street end to end, the 12th-century Cathedral of Santa Cruz standing among the university buildings, and the view up from the riverbank. UNESCO calls the university a citadel of learning and warns that large-scale building around it has already modified the authenticity of that setting, which makes the view from below worth ten minutes of your April light.
Coimbra in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts outside while the morning sits near 48.9°F. Take Sofia Street from the bottom around nine with the sweater on, then climb into the Alta by eleven as the air moves toward the afternoon’s 68.9°F. Eat low in town. Keep the interiors for early afternoon, the chapel and the library first, with their times checked yourself, since we hold none. Give the Botanical Garden the last warm hour. Sunset at 8:14 p.m. means dinner still happens in daylight.
Day two takes the parts most visitors skip: the Cathedral of Santa Cruz, the 1940s University City that was inscribed along with the baroque rooms, and the Mondego bank for the whole hill in one frame. If one of April’s heavy days lands on you, invert the order and put the interiors in the morning. Of the 10.6 wet days, only 2.8 reach 0.39 inch, so the odds favor a shower that passes rather than a day that never opens.
Coimbra in April vs March and May
| Normal, 1991-2020 | March | April | May |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 66.4°F | 68.9°F | 73.9°F |
| Average low | 46.0°F | 48.9°F | 53.2°F |
| Precipitation | 2.97 in | 3.33 in | 2.55 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 9.4 | 10.6 | 8.5 |
Line the three up and April sits in the middle of a rising temperature curve and at the top of a rain curve. Afternoons run 66.4°F, 68.9°F and 73.9°F; nights run 46.0°F, 48.9°F and 53.2°F. Rainfall goes the other way, with April the wettest at 3.33 inches over 10.6 wet days, against 2.97 inches and 9.4 days in March and 2.55 inches and 8.5 days in May. Coimbra is an inland valley town and we hold no sea-surface reading for it, so we give none.
Shift four weeks forward to May and you gain 5.0°F on the afternoon, 4.3°F overnight and 2.1 fewer wet days, and you pay for it with a hill of stone streets at 73.9°F in the middle of the day. Shift back to March and the rain barely improves, 9.4 wet days against 10.6, while the afternoon drops 2.5°F and the night 2.9°F. On these normals, March is the weaker swap.
Is April a good time to visit Coimbra?
Yes, if you are here to walk and do not need the sky to cooperate. The month gives long evenings, a comfortable climb and gardens in full leaf. No, if your trip depends on one fixed outdoor day, or if a third of your mornings starting under cloud will sour the visit: nothing in these normals promises a dry week.
If the answer is no, May is the month to take, and the reasons are arithmetic rather than atmosphere. It is the warmest and driest of the three at 73.9°F, 2.55 inches and 8.5 wet days, and it keeps the same walkable core. Where May falls in the country as a whole is argued out in our best-time guide.
What April alone offers is the pairing: 13 hours 21 minutes of daylight on the 15th with an afternoon still under 70°F, which is the exact condition under which a steep university town is a pleasure at two in the afternoon.
The last word
Book two nights near the old town, leave the interior day unfixed until you have the university’s hours in hand, and let the sky choose the order of the rest. The hill has carried this university for more than seven centuries, from a late-13th-century academy to the University City of the 1940s that UNESCO inscribed alongside the baroque rooms, and Coimbra set the institutional model copied by universities across the Lusophone world. April lends you 13 hours 21 minutes of daylight to cross all of it, showers included.
