April is the Azores stepping out of winter without committing to summer. Ponta Delgada averages 65.8°F by day, the sea surface reads 63.0°F, and the sun stays up for more than 13 hours by mid-month. Rain still shows up on ten days in an average April, but it shows up as showers between bright hours rather than as a wall of gray.
That mix decides what the trip can be. Whale boats sail every month of the year, the crater lookouts cost nothing, thermal pools ignore the sky, and swimming remains a matter of will rather than comfort. Four weeks in either direction moves real figures: March adds 0.69 inch of rain, May adds 2.6°F to the daytime high and takes 1.5 wet days off the count.

Those figures belong to IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, and to one instrument: station 513, Ponta Delgada Observatório, 35.0 meters above sea level on the south coast of São Miguel. They are 1991-2020 normals from a real thermometer, not a reanalysis grid cell averaged over open ocean. They also stop at that coast. High ground runs colder and much wetter, and Pico da Vara reaches 1,105 meters on the same island, so a coastal reading is a poor guide for a mountain trail.
Rain registers on 10.2 days with at least 0.04 inch (1 mm), and only 2.4 days collect 0.39 inch (10 mm) or more. Those thresholds are IPMA’s own, lower than the 0.10-inch cutoff most American tables use, so the counts do not swap. Practically, the month’s 3.13 inches arrive spread thin: something falls on roughly one day in three, mostly in showers that pass, with two or three days that soak an afternoon properly.
The gap between 65.8°F by day and 55.9°F at night is 9.9°F, modest by continental standards, which is why a single fleece covers most evenings. Two layers and a rain shell handle almost every April day at sea level. Altitude is the correction: drive from the harbor to a crater rim and you climb out of the table above. On April 15 the islands get about 13 hours 15 minutes of daylight, sun up at 7:05 a.m. and down at 8:19 p.m. local time (sunrise-sunset.org). That length is the month’s quiet advantage: a lookout at half past seven in the evening still has usable light, so a full driving day fits without a dawn start.
Can you swim in the Azores in April? Sea temperature at 63.0°F
Sea surface off the Azores averages 63.0°F in April, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015-2024. One nuance travels with that number: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it reads a shade warmer than a 24-hour average. The water you step into at eight in the morning sits below 63.0°F, and the figure describes the surface layer, nothing deeper.
For most American visitors 63°F is a plunge rather than a swim. Strong swimmers manage ten minutes without neoprene, children considerably less, and snorkeling wants a wetsuit. Waiting four weeks does not solve it either: May’s 65.9°F buys 2.9°F, not a different sea. Anyone who wants water as the main event should read the swimming question as a wetsuit question.
Our sources carry no April wind or swell normals for the archipelago, so this page will not invent one. What Visit Azores does state is useful anyway: a trip out lasts about three hours, and the official recommendation is a minimum age of five, because a sea an adult calls calm can be hard on a small child.
How busy are the Azores in April? Crowds, prices and the tourist tax
No visitor-nights series for the Azores sits in our sources, so you will find no demand percentage here. The dated cost change is on the tax side: Ponta Delgada has levied a municipal tourist tax since January 2025. The one curve we can put figures to is the weather, and it is already turning: 3.82 inches of rain in March, 3.13 in April, 2.40 in May.
Booking, then, on judgment rather than data. Six to eight weeks out for the rental car and the whale trip is our working number (est.), and the reason is supply rather than season: a three-hour boat carries a fixed number of seats, and the island’s car fleet is finite. Hotels on São Miguel concentrate in and around Ponta Delgada, which is also where the tax applies.
The city’s own tax platform confirms the levy exists, but its rate leaflet sits behind a login, so the figures below come from press coverage and host guides and stay unconfirmed: EUR 2 per person per night for guests aged 13 and over, capped at three consecutive nights, about EUR 6 a head. Listed exemptions are under-13s, medical stays, disability of 60 percent or more, and residents of the Azores. Ask the property to quote it in writing.
The cap decides the bill, and it is not national: Porto charges EUR 3 a night up to seven nights (EUR 21), Funchal EUR 2 up to seven (EUR 14), Ponta Delgada EUR 2 but stops at three. Which leaves the rental car as the one line where paying more genuinely changes April. Things to do in the Azores in April: whale trips, Furnas and Gorreana
Whale and dolphin watching runs all year, and Visit Azores is specific about what the calendar changes: blue whales are easily spotted at the end of winter, while sperm whales, sei whales, baleen whales and spotted dolphins are frequent in summer. April sits between those two lists, which is why the residents matter. Common dolphins and common bottlenose dolphins are here in any month, and swimming with them is allowed. These waters form one of the world’s largest whale sanctuaries, with more than 20 cetacean species recorded, roughly a third of all that exist.
Terra Nostra Park at Furnas, a thermal pool inside a botanical garden, prices around EUR 16 for a visiting adult against about EUR 12.80 for a resident, under-6s free. Treat that as an order of magnitude and confirm at the gate: the park’s own visit pages return an error and the regional tourism portal blocks automated reading. In the same valley, Poça da Beija pairs clear water with ferrous mud, and the Caldeiras of Ribeira Grande keep a thermal building dating from 1811 among trees and fumaroles. Neither carries a price we could verify.
Free, and indifferent to the month: Vista do Rei, the lookout over the Green and Blue lakes of Sete Cidades, and Lagoa do Fogo, higher and wilder. Ponta Delgada costs nothing to walk, and it has been the island’s capital since 1546, when it took the role from Vila Franca do Campo after the 1522 earthquake. Gorreana has grown tea since 1883 and runs a factory-museum, as does Porto Formoso, the only plantations of their kind in Europe. Their admission and hours are not in our sources, so call ahead.
The Azores in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one goes west, with sunrise at 7:05 a.m. buying you an unhurried start. Leave Ponta Delgada around 8:30, stand at Vista do Rei by 9:30 while the Sete Cidades lakes are still clear of cloud, then walk part of the rim. Cross to the north coast for Gorreana late morning, lunch at Furnas, and give the afternoon to thermal water: Poça da Beija, or Terra Nostra at around EUR 16 for a visiting adult. Be back on a lookout by 7:30 p.m., an hour before the 8:19 sunset.
Day two takes the boat. A trip out runs about three hours, the minimum recommended age is five, and the afternoon then belongs to Lagoa do Fogo. If cloud parks on the crater rims, use the island’s shape instead of arguing with it: São Miguel is 62.1 kilometers long and 15.8 at its widest, so the far coast often sits under a different sky. Thermal pools do not care about rain, and Gorreana’s factory is indoors.

The trend runs one way across the three months. Daytime highs climb from 64.2°F to 65.8°F to 68.4°F. Rain falls from 3.82 inches over 11.7 wet days to 3.13 over 10.2, then to 2.40 over 8.7. The sea moves 61.9°F, 63.0°F, 65.9°F, each read as a mean of daily maxima, all of it from station 513 and the same marine series.
Shift four weeks later and you gain 2.6°F on the high, 2.9°F on the water and 1.5 fewer wet days, which is the difference between planning around rain and being caught by it. Shift four weeks earlier and March costs an extra 0.69 inch across 1.5 more wet days with a sea a degree cooler, though it sits closer to the end-of-winter blue whale window. Is April a good time to visit the Azores?
Yes, if your Azores is craters, thermal water and a boat: 65.8°F days, 13 hours 15 minutes of light and only 2.4 heavy-rain days leave plenty of room to work with. No, if the trip is built on swimming and sunbathing. A 63.0°F sea and rain on 10.2 days will not carry a beach week, whatever the photographs suggest.
If the answer is no, take May: 68.4°F highs, 2.40 inches over 8.7 days, sea at 65.9°F, the same island with the odds tilted your way. Travelers who want warm water rather than trail weather should also look south to Madeira, and the whole national calendar is laid out in our month-by-month verdict.

Decide on the car before you decide on the hotel. São Miguel covers 744.7 square kilometers and held 137,856 people at the 2011 census, more than half of all Azoreans, which means the weather here is local and the road out from under it is short. Book the whale trip for your first full morning, keep the second morning as the spare, and let an 8:19 p.m. sunset do the rest of the scheduling.
