SAGRES · PORTUGAL · DECEMBER
December hands Sagres a mild, short, breezy day: an average high of 62.6°F, an average low of 49.8°F, and nine hours and forty-one minutes of light on the 15th. None of that is beach weather in the American sense. Almost all of it is walking weather, which is the version of this cape most people never see.
Faro is the airport, and Sagres sits at the far western end of the Algarve, so plan on a rental car: we could not verify winter bus timetables out to the cape. Two or three nights is the natural length in December, because the daylight, not your energy, sets the ceiling on what fits in a day.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SAGRES · DECEMBER
December gives Sagres 62.6°F afternoons, a 63.2°F Atlantic and cliff paths with nobody on them, and takes back the daylight: it is dark by 5:21 pm.
LOW SEASON · SEA 63.2°F · 8 WET DAYS · CAR ESSENTIAL · 2 TO 3 NIGHTS
Go for: cliff walking at 62.6°F instead of August heat, west-facing beaches with room to park, a fortress promontory on a weekday, and an Algarve running at local speed.
Think twice before: booking a beach week. 63.2°F water is wetsuit water, eight days of the month record measurable rain, and the light goes at 5:21 pm.

One caveat before the tables. The normals here are read at IPMA’s Sagres station, a thermometer 22.9 meters up on the exposed south-west cape, and they describe this headland and nothing wider. The Monchique hills inland run colder and far wetter, and the eastern Algarve keeps its own weather, so don’t pack for a mountain trail on a coastal reading.
Sagres weather in December: average highs, lows and rain days

IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, puts December at Sagres at an average high of 62.6°F and an average low of 49.8°F over the 1991-2020 period, with 2.96 inches of rain across the month. Those come from station 533 on the cape itself, a real instrument at 22.9 meters. That matters more than it sounds: a reanalysis model averages a grid cell that includes open ocean and inland hills, and this coast is not average anywhere.
Eight days in an average December record at least 0.04 inch of rain, and 2.6 of them deliver 0.39 inch or more. Call it measurable rain about one day in four and a real soaking two or three times in the month. IPMA counts to its own thresholds, and US tables usually start at 0.10 inch, so the counts are not interchangeable with the ones on your home forecast. Most of it arrives with Atlantic fronts that move through rather than park overhead.
The gap between that low and that high runs 12.8°F, a narrow spread that argues for layers rather than a heavy coat: fleece, a windproof shell for the headland, long pants, and shoes with grip for wet limestone. Wind does the rest of the work, and the same 62-degree afternoon behaves one way on Mareta’s south-facing sand and another on the point at Cabo de São Vicente. Our packing guide has the full kit.
On December 15 the sun rises at 7:40 am and sets at 5:21 pm, giving 9 hours 41 minutes of daylight. Build the day between 9 am and 4 pm, keep the cape for the last hour of light, and treat anything after 5:30 pm as dinner. Restaurant kitchens in a village this size keep winter hours, so ask at your guesthouse rather than driving to a closed door.
Can you swim in Sagres in December? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea surface off Sagres averages 63.2°F in December, taken from the Open-Meteo Marine record as the mean of daily maxima over 2015-2024. That is the afternoon ceiling rather than a round-the-clock figure, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour mean would, and warmer than what you will meet stepping in at nine in the morning.
Sixty-three degrees is a gasp on entry and a short swim after it. Portuguese swimmers do it all winter without ceremony, and visitors mostly last a few minutes before the feet complain. Surfers have no argument at all: a full wetsuit makes 63.2°F a comfortable two-hour session, and Sagres in December is one of the reasons the surf schools here keep their doors open past the summer.
We could not verify wind or wave statistics for December at Sagres, so we give no figures for either. What the geography says is plain enough: Tonel and Beliche face the open Atlantic and take the swell straight on, while Mareta faces south and sits in the lee when the northwesterly blows. On a rough day the village simply walks around the corner.
How busy is Sagres in December? Crowds, prices and the holiday week
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Sagres, so we crown no month cheapest and none dearest. What the calendar gives us instead: the Algarve’s high season is July and August, European school holidays don’t start until Christmas week, and December sits outside both for its first three weeks. Parking at the beaches and a table at dinner stop being a planning problem.
Two blocks of dates behave differently. Christmas through New Year draws Europeans with a week off and surf camps that fill their bunks, and the first three weeks are a month you can decide late. Book the holiday dates as soon as your flights are set, and leave the rest flexible. We could not verify lead times for this town, so treat that as our judgment rather than as data.
On lodging tax, we could not verify a rate for Sagres or its municipality, so we quote no percentage and no per-night amount. Ask at check-in and expect it on the folio rather than in the booking price. For the wider arithmetic of a week in Portugal, our cost guide does the breakdown.
The one upgrade that changes December here is heating. A lot of Algarve rentals were built for August, with tile floors, single glazing and a token radiator, and a night that drops to 49.8°F inside such a house is the thing travelers remember. Filter for heating, read the reviews written in winter, and spend the difference there rather than on a sea view you will see for nine hours a day.
Things to do in Sagres in December: the fortress, the cape and the beaches

Walking is what this month unlocks. The clifftop paths of the Rota Vicentina run along the top of these headlands, and doing them at 62.6°F with a breeze is a different sport from doing them in an Algarve summer. Add the fishermen who work the cliff edges year-round, and a coastline where the loudest thing in December is the surf hitting the base of the rock.
The named stops are few and good: the Fortaleza de Sagres on its flat promontory, with the giant stone wind rose inside the walls; the lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente, the southwest corner of mainland Europe; and the beaches, Tonel and Beliche facing west, Mareta facing south below the village. We did not verify current admission or opening hours at the fortress or the lighthouse, so check before you drive out.
What December changes is the air far more than the water. Across November, December and January the sea moves only 3.0°F, from 64.4°F to 61.4°F, while the average afternoon falls 5.2°F over the same stretch and the daylight shrinks around it. The surf stays roughly as it was in autumn. The walk to reach it gets cooler, shorter and emptier.
Most of the month costs nothing: the headland paths, the beaches, the sunset at the cape at 5:21 pm, the whole cliff circuit around the village. We could not verify parking charges at the cape or at the beach lots, so we quote none. If a wet day lands, Lagos is the indoor fallback, and Ponta da Piedade is a short, spectacular stop on the way back.
Sagres in December: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts at 9 am at the Fortaleza de Sagres, when the low sun rakes across the promontory and the wind rose reads best. Lunch in the village around one. Keep the afternoon for the cliff path toward Tonel, then drive out to Cabo de São Vicente by 4:30 pm and stay through the 5:21 sunset. With 9 hours 41 minutes of light, one monument and one walk is an honest full day.
Day two goes to the water: Beliche and Tonel in the morning, a wetsuit session if the swell cooperates, then Mareta in the afternoon when the northwesterly has picked up and the south-facing sand is the calm side. If one of the eight wet days lands on you, swap it for an indoor lunch in Lagos and the clifftop steps at Ponta da Piedade, or push east to Faro for the old town.
Sagres in December vs November and January
| November | December | January | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 66.2°F | 62.6°F | 61.0°F |
| Average low | 53.1°F | 49.8°F | 47.3°F |
| Precipitation | 3.23 in | 2.96 in | 2.10 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 8.4 | 8.0 | 7.4 |
| Sea surface (daily maxima) | 64.4°F | 63.2°F | 61.4°F |
November runs 3.6°F warmer by day and keeps the sea at 64.4°F, and it is also the wettest of the three at 3.23 inches. January takes another 1.6°F off the afternoon and 2.5°F off the night, and drops the sea to 61.4°F. Rain is where January separates itself: 2.10 inches against December’s 2.96, the driest of the three by a clear margin. All five rows come from the same IPMA station and the same 1991-2020 period.
Shift back four weeks and you buy warmer water, longer light and the year’s warmest surfing of the off-season, and you pay in rainfall. Shift forward four weeks and you buy the driest sky of the three, paid for at dawn: 47.3°F before sunrise makes an unheated rental a genuine consideration. December sits between them, which is the entire case for it. For the rest of the calendar, see our 12-month verdict for Portugal.
Is December a good time to visit Sagres?
Yes for surfers, walkers and photographers, and for anyone whose idea of a good trip is a cliff, a coat and an empty parking lot. No for a family beach week: 63.2°F water, eight days of measurable rain and darkness at 5:21 pm add up to a vacation nobody booked. Couples who like a fire and a long lunch do very well here in December.
If that verdict lands wrong, November is the closer fix than January, since it keeps 66.2°F afternoons and a 64.4°F sea and only asks for 0.27 inch more rain. Push to January only if dry days matter more than warm ones. Anyone wanting real swimming weather should be looking at the far side of the calendar entirely.
Across these three months December is the middle setting, within 1.2°F of November’s sea and 2.5°F above January’s dawn, and it is the one of the three that pairs a walkable 62.6°F afternoon with an ocean still above 63°F.
The last word
One number to decide with: November records 8.4 wet days and December 8.0, a difference of less than half a day. Moving your trip a month earlier does nothing for the sky, it only buys warmer water. The month that actually dries out is January, at 7.4 days and 2.10 inches. So book the room with heating, keep the Fortaleza for the afternoon the wind turns, and put the cape at 4:30 on whichever day looks clearest.
