LAGOS · OCTOBER · 37.1° N
October keeps Lagos in short sleeves and takes away the certainty. Afternoons average 72.3°F, the sea off the point reads 66.3°F, its warmest of the fall, and rain turns up on about 6.7 days instead of September’s 2.5. The sun sets at 7:00 pm on the 15th, which pulls dinner earlier than summer habits suggest and gives the cliffs their best light by six.
Getting here does not change with the date: most US itineraries land at Lisbon or Faro airport and continue west, and three or four nights (est.) is the usual shape of a Lagos stay. What the month changes is the order of a day, the odds on a beach afternoon, and whether a rental car is worth the line in the budget.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · LAGOS · OCTOBER
October gives Lagos the warmest sea of the fall at 66.3°F and afternoons near 72.3°F, and charges for it with 6.7 rain days and a 7:00 pm sunset.
AVG HIGH 72.3°F · SEA 66.3°F · 6.7 RAIN DAYS · 11H 18M OF DAYLIGHT ON THE 15TH
Go for: the warmest sea of the fall, cliff walking without summer heat, and museum afternoons that stay open Tuesday to Sunday right through the month.
Think twice before: booking a beach-only week. Rain falls on 6.7 days in an average October, and 1.8 of those bring 0.39 inch or more.

Every figure here comes from two very different kinds of source: the air normals from a national weather station with a real thermometer, the sea from a marine model averaged over ten years. Both are named where they are used. For where to sleep, how the beaches sort out and what the rest of the coast holds, our Lagos guide and the Algarve overview carry it, and the month-by-month verdict for Portugal ranks the whole year.
Lagos weather in October: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | October, 1991-2020 |
|---|---|
| Average high | 72.3°F (22.4°C) |
| Average low | 59.0°F (15.0°C) |
| Rainfall | 2.42 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 6.7 |
| Days with 0.39 in or more | 1.8 |
| Sea surface, daily maxima | 66.3°F (19.1°C) |
| Daylight on October 15 | 11h 18m · 7:42 am to 7:00 pm |
These normals are IPMA’s, the Portuguese national weather service, measured from 1991 to 2020 at station 533 in Sagres, 22.9 meters above sea level. That is an instrument in a field, not a model grid cell. It is also the nearest published station to Lagos and the windiest point of the Algarve, and it does not describe the whole region: high ground inland runs colder and far wetter, and the eastern end of the coast keeps its own weather. October at that station averages 72.3°F by day, 59.0°F at night, 2.42 inches of rain.
Rain at 0.04 inch or more falls on 6.7 days, roughly one day in five. That threshold is IPMA’s own, not the 0.10 inch used in US tables, so the counts are not interchangeable. Only 1.8 days reach 0.39 inch, the sort of downpour that cancels a boat trip rather than a walk; the rest tends to arrive as a band that clears by lunch. Keep the first morning of the trip loose and book the boat for later in the week.
Between the 72.3°F afternoon and the 59.0°F dawn sits 13.3°F, enough that one day wants both a swimsuit and a real layer. Terrace dinners ask for sleeves by nine. Pack a fleece, one rain shell and shoes that cope with a wet cliff path, and the sandals still get worn at midday. Our Portugal packing guide has the full list.
On October 15 the sun rises at 7:42 am and sets at 7:00 pm local time, 11 hours 18 minutes of daylight, converted from the 06:42 and 18:00 UTC published by sunrise-sunset.org. Aim the cliff walk at late afternoon and the good light arrives without an alarm. Try to stack two beaches and a boat trip into one day and you will finish the last of them in the dark.
Can you swim in Lagos in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Water off Lagos averages 66.3°F in October, from the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015 to 2024. Read the number carefully: it is the mean of daily maxima, a shade warmer than a 24-hour average, so the sea at nine in the morning sits below it. It is also the warmest of the three fall months, ahead of September’s 64.2°F and November’s 64.4°F, which surprises people who assume the ocean tracks the air.
At 66.3°F you swim rather than lounge. The first wade is a shock, then the cove water at Praia Dona Ana or the long sand of Meia Praia turns pleasant enough for a proper crossing of the bay, and you come out wanting a towel and a patch of sun. Families with small children tend to use the shallow end and call it a morning. Anyone planning a full hour in the water, surfers included, wants a shorty wetsuit.
We could not verify a monthly wind or swell series for Lagos, so we give no figure for either. What the station does tell us is where the thermometer stands: Sagres is the windiest point of the Algarve, and Lagos, tucked east of that headland, gets shelter the readings never show. The west-facing beaches toward Sagres take the Atlantic swell head on, while the coves under the cliffs sit out of it more often than not.
How busy is Lagos in October? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Lagos, so we crown no month cheapest and no month dearest. What we can date is the light and the water, and both point the same way: October is the tail of the swimming season rather than the front of winter, with the sea at 66.3°F and afternoons at 72.3°F.
Book the flight before the room. Most US trips reach the Algarve through Lisbon or Faro, and our flights guide walks the connection options. Six to eight weeks (est.) is a comfortable lead for a fall week down here, more if your dates land on a holiday weekend. Three or four nights (est.) covers Lagos itself, and a fifth buys the day west along the coast.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for Lagos, so we give no percentage and no per-night figure. Build the budget from the parts that can be priced instead, which is what our Portugal cost breakdown does with transport, car and meals. One scheduling detail helps: the municipal museum lists closure dates on January 1, Easter Sunday, April 25, May 1 and three days in December, and none of them falls in October.
The upgrade that genuinely changes this month is a car. With 6.7 wet days scattered through October, mobility is the difference between a washed-out afternoon and a drive to whichever stretch of coast has sky over it: Praia da Luz to the west, the headland at Sagres, the calmer beaches east toward Tavira. Our car guide covers the electronic tolls and the insurance line that catches Americans out.
Things to do in Lagos in October: the Rota da Escravatura, the fort and Praia da Luz

October is the only one of the three fall months that puts the sea above 66°F and the afternoon above 70°F at the same time, which means a swim in the morning and hours of walking after lunch without either being a fight against heat. It also puts 6.7 wet days on the board, so the indoor half of the town matters in a way it never does in July.
Start with the Rota da Escravatura on Praça do Infante, also called the Mercado de Escravos, open Tuesday to Sunday, 10:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 18:00, last admission half an hour before closing. It tells Lagos’s part in the fifteenth-century slave trade, and it stands on what came out of the ground in 2009: a dig at Vale da Gafaria, outside the walls, found a refuse tip holding more than 150 human skeletons, African people brought here as merchandise and discarded with the town’s waste.
Opening hours do not shift with the season, and the water barely does either, 64.2°F in September against 66.3°F now. The air is what moves: 4.5°F below September by day, 3.1°F below at night. That reorders a day more than it changes its content. A 10:00 museum opening stops competing with beach time, and the boat out to Ponta da Piedade wants a windbreaker that July does not.
We could not verify an admission price for any of the museum’s seven sites, nor any figure for Ponta da Piedade or the beaches, so we quote none: ask at the desk. What costs nothing in any month is the clifftop path above the coves and the outside of the Forte Ponta da Bandeira, which is currently as close as anyone gets. Built between 1680 and 1690 to cover the quay and cross fire with the Porta da Vila, the fort is temporarily closed, and its museum page still said so on July 16, 2026.
Lagos in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on a 7:42 sunrise and a 7:00 pm sunset. Coffee at eight, the old town and Praça do Infante before ten, the Rota da Escravatura from its 10:00 opening and out by one. Lunch, then the water in early afternoon, when the 66.3°F reading is at its friendliest, at Praia Dona Ana. From five, walk the clifftop toward Ponta da Piedade: the low sun turns the sandstone orange and you still have an hour of light in hand.
Day two leaves town. The boat to the sea caves in the morning, then Praia da Luz in the afternoon for the Roman bath house, one of the seven sites the Museu de Lagos runs, alongside the main museum, the Dr. José Formosinho collection, the Centro de Documentação and the Armazém do Espingardeiro. If the sky turns, and 1.8 days in an average October deliver 0.39 inch or more, invert the plan: the museum sites keep their Tuesday-to-Sunday hours in the rain, and a drive east often finds a different sky.
Lagos in October vs September and November
| Measure | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 76.8°F | 72.3°F | 66.2°F |
| Average low | 62.1°F | 59.0°F | 53.1°F |
| Rainfall | 0.73 in | 2.42 in | 3.23 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 2.5 | 6.7 | 8.4 |
| Sea surface, daily maxima | 64.2°F | 66.3°F | 64.4°F |
Across the three months the afternoon falls 10.6°F, from 76.8°F in September to 66.2°F in November, while the rain multiplies: 0.73 inch, then 2.42, then 3.23, on 2.5, 6.7 and 8.4 wet days. Sea temperature does not track that slope. The marine average gives 64.2°F in September, 66.3°F in October and 64.4°F in November, so the warmest swimming of the three sits in the middle month, not the first.
Move four weeks earlier and you buy 4.5°F of afternoon and drop from 6.7 wet days to 2.5, giving up 2.1°F of sea (September in detail). Move four weeks later and November takes 6.1°F off the day and hands you 8.4 wet days and 3.23 inches of rain, with the water almost unchanged at 64.4°F (November in detail). If the dates can move at all, the earlier swap is the one that costs least.
Is October a good time to visit Lagos?
Yes for most travelers, with one condition. If you want cliff walking, a town you can cross on foot, museum afternoons and a sea you can still get into, October delivers all four, and 72.3°F walks better than it sunbathes. If the trip is a beach week and nothing else, 6.7 wet days and a sunset at 7:00 pm turn it into a gamble nobody needs to take.
If that is your trip, go in September: 76.8°F afternoons, 0.73 inch of rain across 2.5 wet days, and a sea only 2.1°F cooler at 64.2°F. November runs the wrong way for sunbathing, 66.2°F and 8.4 wet days, though it holds the water at 64.4°F for anyone who swims in anything. The full twelve-month ranking sits in our best-time guide.
Of the three fall months, only October pairs the warmest sea, 66.3°F, with an afternoon mild enough to walk the whole cliff line without hunting for shade.
The last word
Book the flight and the room, then leave the boat day floating: with 6.7 wet days spread through the month, the trips that work choose their Ponta da Piedade morning two days out rather than two months out. And when the Forte Ponta da Bandeira reopens, go in for something small, a seventeenth-century chapel lined with azulejos, behind seaward walls built thick for artillery and a moat still crossed by a drawbridge.
