Tavira in October: Weather, Sea Temperature, Rain Days and Crowds

October is when Tavira gets its town back. The Gilão slides under the old arched bridge with nobody queuing to photograph it, the salt pans turn pink and quiet at the end of the afternoon, and the thermometer down the coast still averages 73.9°F by day. You can swim, you can walk the old town at two in the afternoon without hunting for shade, and you can eat outside if you carry a sweater for the walk home.

The bill arrives as rain. October records 2.20 inches against September’s 0.85, and six days with measurable rain instead of two. The sea, oddly enough, does not cool: the marine series puts it at 67.3°F, warmer than either neighboring month. So the question for your trip is not whether Tavira works in October, but which four weeks you shift if the forecast turns on you.

October keeps Tavira’s afternoons in the low 70s and its sea at 67.3°F while the summer rush thins out, and it pays for that with six rain days instead of September’s two.

Go for: swimming that still works at 67.3°F, walking weather in the old town and along the salinas, and a shoulder-season calendar for flights and beds.

Think twice before: booking a non-refundable beach week, since October records rain on about six days against 1.9 in September.

Every figure here comes from one instrument: IPMA’s station 554 at Faro, 5 meters above sea level, just west of Tavira on the same sheltered eastern stretch of the Algarve. That is a real thermometer, not a model grid cell, and it is the right reading for a trip spent between the old town and the lagoon. It is the wrong reading for the hills inland, which run colder and far wetter. Sea temperatures come from a separate source with its own caveat, served below.

IPMA’s 1991-2020 normals give October an average high of 73.9°F and an average low of 60.4°F. In vacation terms that is a month of short sleeves from mid-morning to sundown, with the sun strong enough at midday to matter on the sand and gentle enough at three in the afternoon to walk a salt-pan track without regretting it. Nobody needs a plan built around shade, which is not something September always allows.

Six days in an average October record at least 0.04 inch of rain, and two of those record 0.39 inch or more. Those are IPMA’s own thresholds, not the 0.10-inch cut American tables use, so the counts are not interchangeable with the NOAA numbers for your hometown. Translated into a week of holiday: about four days in five record nothing measurable, and the month’s 2.20 inches falls concentrated, since the two wettest days alone carry at least a third of the total.

The gap between 73.9°F and 60.4°F is 13.5°F, and the low is a pre-dawn figure rather than a dinner-hour one. Pack for the middle: one layer over the T-shirt for early mornings on the ferry slip and for the walk back from dinner, plus a light rain shell that lives in the daypack and mostly stays there. Our Portugal packing guide handles the rest of the suitcase.

On October 15 the sun is up for 11 hours 18 minutes, rising at 7:38 a.m. and setting at 6:56 p.m. local time (converted from the 06:38 and 17:56 UTC readings). That puts the last comfortable beach hour around five, with the light going gold over the salinas after it. We did not verify the date of Portugal’s autumn clock change, so late-October evenings may sit an hour earlier by the clock: worth a check before you book a sunset table.

Can you swim in Tavira in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea off Tavira averages 67.3°F (19.6°C) in October on Open-Meteo’s marine series, averaged over 2015-2024. Read the small print with us: that number is the mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would, and it comes from neither the same instrument nor the same decade as the air normals above. Treat it as the warm end of the day’s range, not as the water you meet at breakfast.

At 67.3°F, swimming is a real option and a brisk one. Most adults go in steadily rather than at a run, stay in for a stretch rather than an hour, and come out genuinely pleased with themselves. Children chill faster and will want the towel sooner. Because the figure is a daily maximum, early afternoon is your best shot at the number you just read, and a 9 a.m. dip sits under it.

We found no wave-height or wind series for October off Tavira, so we publish no swell figures. What the station file does tell us is that Faro and Tavira share a sheltered eastern stretch of coast, and the lagoon water behind the barrier island is another matter entirely from the ocean side of the sand: flat where the sandbars shelter it, and with no separate temperature series we could verify. Our Algarve guide covers how the coast changes west of here.

How busy is Tavira in October? Crowds, prices and booking

By the calendar, October is a shoulder month: the summer school holidays are behind it and the winter quiet is not yet in front of it. That is as far as the evidence goes. We found no occupancy series and no room-rate series for Tavira, so we crown no month cheapest and quote no nightly rate. Anyone who tells you October is the bargain of the year is guessing at the same data we could not find.

What the date does change is how you book. With six wet days on the record against September’s 1.9, refundable rates and flexible dates buy more here than they would four weeks earlier, especially for nights whose whole point is the beach. We could not verify how far ahead October beds fill in town, so we give no lead time in weeks. Start with where to stay in Portugal and flights from the US.

We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for Tavira, so no percentage appears anywhere in our figures. Several Portuguese municipalities do levy a per-night city tax on hotel stays, and the reliable move is to ask the property what it adds at checkout when you reserve, rather than trusting a number from a forum. Our trip cost guide lays out the other lines of a Portugal budget.

The one place where paying more genuinely changes this month is mobility. A car turns a rainy morning into a choice between the coast and the hills inland, and it turns Tavira from a single base into a week of the eastern Algarve. Faro’s airport is the obvious pickup point for that, and our rental car guide covers tolls, insurance and the traps before you sign.

Things to do in Tavira in October: Ilha de Tavira, the salinas and the old town

October hands you an overlap the other months break. September’s 79.5°F afternoons make a two-hour walk on open salt pans a sweaty proposition, and November’s sea reading of 65.3°F puts most swimmers off entirely. In October the air sits at 73.9°F and the water at 67.3°F, which means the same day can hold a long walk and a swim without either one being an act of endurance.

The shortlist is short and good. Ilha de Tavira, the barrier island reached by ferry from Quatro Águas, is where you would test that 67.3°F on the ocean side of the sand. Santa Luzia, the octopus-boat village along the lagoon, is a flat walk or a short drive west. Cacela Velha sits east above the water, whitewashed and tiny. In town: the arched bridge over the Gilão, the castle garden, the market. We could not verify October ferry fares or timetables, so we quote none: check at the slip the week you travel, and see our Tavira guide for the year-round detail.

What the date changes is the air, not the water. Across the three months the sea reading barely moves, from 65.4°F in September to 67.3°F in October and 65.3°F in November, while the afternoon air falls 5.6°F from September and another 6.6°F by November. Daylight is the other mover: 11 hours 18 minutes on October 15, which is enough for an island morning and a lagoon evening, and not enough for both plus a long drive.

Free is mostly what is underfoot. Walking the riverfront, crossing the bridge, following the tracks between the salt pans and watching the light go over the lagoon at 6:56 p.m. cost nothing at all. Check admission and opening hours at the castle or the churches at the door; in a town this size it takes about four minutes.

Tavira in October: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the sun. It rises at 7:38 a.m., so coffee by half past eight puts you in the old town while the air is still climbing off its 60.4°F low, which is the pleasant hour for the bridge, the castle garden and the stairs. Ferry across to the island late morning, swim in the early afternoon when the water is nearest that 67.3°F daily maximum, and be back on the mainland for the salinas at five. Dinner outside, with the layer you packed.

Day two goes east and west along the lagoon: Santa Luzia in the morning, Cacela Velha in the late afternoon for the view over the water. If one of the month’s six wet days lands on you, and on a two-day stay the odds are roughly one in three, move the market and a long lunch to the front of the day and drive inland after, where the showers pass. We could not verify museum hours for October, so call before you build an indoor afternoon around one.

Tavira in October vs September and November

Measure September October November
Average high 79.5°F 73.9°F 67.3°F
Average low 64.9°F 60.4°F 53.4°F
Precipitation 0.85 in 2.20 in 2.97 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 1.9 6.0 6.6
Sea surface 65.4°F 67.3°F 65.3°F

October lands 5.6°F below September’s afternoons and 6.6°F above November’s, on the same IPMA normals. Rain is where the three split hardest: 0.85 inch and 1.9 wet days in September, 2.20 inches and 6.0 wet days in October, 2.97 inches and 6.6 in November. The sea runs against that grain. On the Open-Meteo marine series, a different source and a different period from the air figures, October reads 67.3°F, about two degrees above both neighbors.

Shift back four weeks and you gain warm, near-dry days and lose two degrees of water, plus the last of the summer crowd comes with it. Shift forward four weeks and you keep walking weather at 67.3°F by day, but nights drop to 53.4°F, the rain total rises by a third, and swimming becomes a dare rather than a plan. Both neighbors have their own pages: September and November.

Is October a good time to visit Tavira?

Yes, for the traveler who wants a town rather than a resort season: walkers, lagoon and birdwatching people, couples on a long weekend, anyone happy to swim at 67.3°F and then sit in the sun to warm up. No, for a family whose children need bathwater, and no for anyone locking in a non-refundable week and expecting seven dry days from a month that records rain on six.

If that second paragraph is you, take September: 0.85 inch of rain across the whole month, 1.9 wet days, afternoons at 79.5°F, and water only two degrees cooler than October’s. The price is heat at midday and more company on the sand. If swimming is not the point at all, November keeps the 67.3°F afternoons for walking and gives up the sea entirely.

Among the three, October is the only month where the sea reading tops both of its neighbors while the afternoon air still reaches the low 70s.

The last word

Book the week, hold the beach days loose, and let the forecast pick which morning goes to the island. Over a seven-night stay, the 6.0 wet days in an average October work out to roughly one and a half days that record any rain at all, which is a rounding error against the other five and a half spent between 73.9°F air and 67.3°F water. Bring the sweater for the 6:56 p.m. walk home and you have the month.
