Óbidos in April: Weather, Rain Days and How It Compares to March and May

Óbidos in April runs afternoons averaging 61.9°F, nights at 54.5°F, and 13 hours 19 minutes of daylight by the middle of the month. The rain has not packed up: 1.88 inches fall across roughly eight days. That single line is what separates April here from May, and for a town whose main attraction is a circuit of walls you walk, mild and bright does the job.

The date decides your day trips too. The coast road north to Nazaré and the run south to Lisbon both fit inside an April day now that the light holds past 8 pm. Pack for showers and save the wall circuit for the clearest half-day of your stay.

April gives Óbidos 61.9°F afternoons and 13 hours 19 minutes of light, with rain still sitting at March’s level: come to walk, pack a shell, and expect a shower about one day in four.

Óbidos itself does not change with the date. The streets, the beds inside the walls, the drive out from Lisbon and where to eat all sit in our Óbidos guide, and the twelve-month country view sits in best time to visit Portugal. Below are April’s normals and how they read against the months on either side.

Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, and from one named instrument: station 531 at Cabo Carvoeiro, Peniche, 32.0 meters above sea level, averaged over 1991 to 2020. That is a real thermometer on the coast, not a model grid cell. Óbidos sits slightly inland behind its walls, and the country around it does not read the same way: higher ground runs colder and a good deal wetter. Take 61.9°F and 54.5°F as a coastal baseline for the April you will walk in, not as a reading for a hill trail.

April records 7.7 days with at least 1 mm of rain, 0.04 inch, which works out to measurable rain about one day in four. A heavier soaking of 10 mm, 0.39 inch, lands on 1.5 days in an average April. Those are IPMA’s own thresholds, not the 0.10-inch bar American tables use, so the two sets of counts are not interchangeable. The practical shape of the month is showers that arrive and clear, with a 1.88-inch total spread thin over four weeks.

Between the average high and the average low sits 7.4°F, an Atlantic spread narrow enough that mid-morning and mid-afternoon feel like relatives. A fleece and a waterproof shell cover the entire month, and the shell earns its place first. Cobbles inside the gate turn slick the moment a shower passes, so grip on your soles matters more than warmth in your bag. The full list is in what to pack for Portugal.

On April 15 the sun sets at 8:16 pm local time, closing 13 hours 19 minutes of daylight (calculated from sunrise-sunset.org and converted from UTC to Portuguese summer time). Dinner inside the walls starts in daylight. The hour between 7 and 8 pm is when the light goes long and flat across the plain below the ramparts, and it is the best hour of an April day here.

How warm is Óbidos in April?

The month averages 61.9°F by day and 54.5°F at night, 7.4°F apart. These are means across thirty Aprils rather than a forecast: individual afternoons run warmer, and an Atlantic front drops the odd day well below. March runs 60.6°F and May 64.8°F, so April climbs exactly one rung of the spring ladder and no more.

Mornings at 54.5°F want a layer you will be carrying by eleven. Afternoons in the low sixties are shirt-sleeve walking while the sun holds, and wind decides everything else: the station supplying these numbers stands on an exposed headland at Peniche, and the wall walk in Óbidos is exposed in much the same way. Something windproof for the parapet is worth the space, even on a bright day.

We hold no count of nights at or below freezing in April, so we give none. An average low of 54.5°F sits more than twenty degrees clear of frost, and a cold April night here means a sweater at dinner. We also could not verify a sea-surface temperature series for this coast. Where a Portuguese sea figure is quoted elsewhere, it is usually an average of daily maxima, a touch warmer than a true 24-hour mean, and worth reading with that in mind.

How busy is Óbidos in April? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Óbidos, so we crown no month cheap and none expensive. What the calendar does say is that April falls ahead of the Portuguese summer run, when the coast and the big cities take their load. The country-wide seasonal read is in best time to visit Portugal, and the spending ranges are in what a Portugal trip costs.

With no booking data in hand, we put no number of weeks on lead time either. The practical shape is this: Óbidos works as a day trip from Lisbon and a great many visitors treat it that way, so the pool of beds inside the walls is smaller than the size of the afternoon crowd suggests. If a night within the gate is the point of the trip, lock it as soon as your dates are firm and keep the rest of the itinerary loose. Regional bases are compared in where to stay in Portugal.

We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for Óbidos, so no percentage appears. A number of Portuguese municipalities levy a per-person, per-night tourist tax, and where one applies it is normally collected at checkout rather than folded into the rate you booked. Ask the property when you reserve.

The one line worth paying up for in April is the bed inside the walls. With sunset at 8:16 pm, the long stretch that belongs to residents and overnight guests, after the day visitors leave, is genuinely long this month. A room outside the gate saves money and hands back those hours. If you are driving in, the toll and insurance detail is in our car rental guide.

Things to do in Óbidos in April

The wall circuit is the main walk in town · old stone and April showers change the pace · Illustration

With 13 hours 19 minutes of daylight on April 15 and afternoons averaging 61.9°F, the full wall circuit, the streets and a run out to the coast all fit inside one day, and you can start the walk at noon without fighting the sun. March offers the same walk at 60.6°F on a shorter day. That extra light, at an air temperature you can still walk in comfortably, is what April adds to the visit.

The places are few and named without ambiguity. Porta da Vila, the tiled gateway, is the way in. Rua Direita runs the length of the town toward the castle, carrying the shops and the ginjinha counters, the local sour-cherry liqueur served in small chocolate cups. Igreja de Santa Maria stands on the main square. The keep at the upper end is a pousada, a state-run hotel in a historic building.

Stone and street plan stay put through the year, and the air is the variable. The same circuit that bakes under a Portuguese summer is a 61.9°F walk in April, and at a fixed site that difference is the entire season. Rain is the second variable: 7.7 wet days means roughly one visit in four meets a shower, and worn stone under water changes how fast anyone walks it.

Walking the streets and the squares costs nothing in April, as in any month, and on a clear evening that is most of what the town gives you anyway. Beyond that we are not guessing: we could not confirm the current pricing or hours of the ticketed sites here, so check them on the day.

Óbidos in April: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Arrive mid-morning and walk Rua Direita end to end before the afternoon fills it. Take the wall circuit between noon and 2 pm, when that 61.9°F average is doing its best work. Lunch late, then Santa Maria and the lanes that drop away from the main street. From about 6 pm the day visitors thin out, and the hour before the 8:16 pm sunset belongs back on the walls. Eat inside the gate afterward.

Day two goes outward: the coast lies west, Nazaré and its cliff sit north along the same road, and Lisbon is an afternoon to the south. If the sky turns, and on a week-long April stay it will do so on about two days, rebuild indoors around the church, the shops on Rua Direita and a slow lunch, then move the wall walk to whichever afternoon clears. Buses and trains for the region are covered in getting around Portugal.

Óbidos in April vs March and May

Measure March April May

Average low 52.7°F (11.5°C) 54.5°F (12.5°C) 57.7°F (14.3°C)
Precipitation 1.92 in 1.88 in 1.41 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 7.6 7.7 5.4
Sea temperature Not verified Not verified Not verified

March runs 60.6°F by day and 52.7°F at night, with 1.92 inches of rain over 7.6 wet days. April barely moves off that mark: 61.9°F, 54.5°F, 1.88 inches, 7.7 wet days. May is where the line bends, at 64.8°F and 57.7°F with 1.41 inches over 5.4 wet days. So the step from March to April is 1.3°F on the afternoon and nothing on rain worth naming, while the step from April to May is 2.9°F and 2.3 fewer wet days.

Shifting four weeks later buys 2.9°F on the afternoon, 3.2°F on the night, and those 2.3 drier days in the record. What it does not buy, as far as we can show, is a quieter town: we hold no occupancy figures for either month. Going four weeks earlier costs 1.3°F and gains nothing measurable on rain, so March and April are close to interchangeable on weather, while May is a different proposition.

Is April a good time to visit Óbidos?

April works for anyone whose trip is built on walking: the walls, the streets, the two day trips, all at 61.9°F with more than thirteen hours of usable light. It works badly for a traveler who came for water.

If the rain count is what decides it, take May instead: 5.4 wet days against April’s 7.7, 1.41 inches against 1.88, and afternoons at 64.8°F. That is the clearest upgrade available within a month either side, and our May page sets out the same measures. Flights and fares for either month are in flights from the US.

What April alone gives is an 8:16 pm sunset this early in the year, with afternoons already past 60°F and the ramparts still quiet enough to have a stretch of them to yourself.

The last word

Book the night inside the walls, pack the shell before the second sweater, and aim the wall circuit at whichever afternoon looks driest, because 7.7 wet days in thirty is not a record you beat by wishing. One figure we held back: on April 15 the sun is up at 6:58 am local time. That is early enough to walk Rua Direita with nobody on it and still be back for breakfast.
