ALBUFEIRA · OCTOBER · THE ALGARVE
October gives Albufeira a 73.9°F afternoon, a 60.4°F dawn and a sea sitting at 67.3°F. That combination is the rare one on the Algarve calendar: water still warm enough for a proper swim, air mild enough to climb the Old Town stairs at noon and want lunch afterward. Faro is still the airport, the nights still cost less than a July week, and the vacation assembles with less lead time than August asks for (our flights guide has the routings from the US).
What the month takes away is September’s dryness. The average high drops 5.6°F from 79.5°F, precipitation climbs from 0.85 inch to 2.20 inches, and measurable rain shows up on 6.0 days instead of 1.9. Daylight is down to 11 hours 18 minutes by mid-month, so the long walk after dinner happens in the dark. None of that makes October a washout, and the three-month arithmetic below is worth reading before you pick your two weeks.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · ALBUFEIRA · OCTOBER
October is the last month that hands you swimmable water and mild afternoons at the same time: come for the 67.3°F sea and the 73.9°F days, and plan one indoor afternoon into every five.
AVG HIGH 73.9°F · SEA 67.3°F · 6.0 RAIN DAYS · 11 H 18 MIN OF DAYLIGHT
Go for: swimming and walking on the same day, cliff light at 6:30 p.m., and a booking window that no longer runs on school-holiday rules.
Think twice before: expecting September’s dry calendar. Rain is measured on 6.0 October days against September’s 1.9, and the monthly total nearly triples.

One caveat before the tables. Every air temperature here comes from a single instrument: IPMA station 554 at Faro, 5.0 meters above sea level, at the eastern end of the Algarve. Albufeira sits further west on the same coast, and the normals below describe a strip of shoreline rather than the region behind it. The hills inland run colder and a great deal wetter, so packing for a Serra hike on a sea-level reading is a mistake we would rather you avoid.

IPMA, Portugal’s national weather and sea service, puts the October normal at 73.9°F by day and 60.4°F at night across 1991-2020, with 2.20 inches of precipitation for the month. Those are readings from a working thermometer, not values pulled from a reanalysis grid cell, and the difference shows up whenever two websites give you October highs three degrees apart. When you compare figures elsewhere, check which kind you are reading.
Rain falls measurably on 6.0 days, roughly one day in five. Be careful with that count: IPMA calls a day wet at 1 mm, which is 0.04 inch, while American tables usually start at 0.10 inch, so Albufeira’s number looks worse than an equivalent US figure would. Spread the 2.20 inches over those six days and each one averages 0.37 inch, which is rain you plan around rather than rain you ignore.
The gap between afternoon and dawn is 13.5°F, wider than most people pack for. A short-sleeve lunch at 2 p.m. turns into a genuine layer on a terrace at 9 p.m., and the swimsuit that dried in twenty minutes in August will still be damp at bedtime. One warm layer, one light rain shell and shoes that handle wet cobbles cover the month; our Portugal packing guide goes through the rest.
On October 15 the sun comes up at 7:38 a.m. local time and sets at 6:56 p.m., giving 11 hours 18 minutes of daylight. That reshapes the day at both ends: sunrise arrives late enough that an early start is civilized, and the cliffs get their best light around 6:30 p.m., with full dark by about 7:30. Dinner in October is an indoor or a sweater affair.
Can you swim in Albufeira in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Open-Meteo’s marine series puts the sea surface off Albufeira at 67.3°F for October, averaged over 2015-2024. Read the definition with the number: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour average, and an 8 a.m. swim will be cooler than 67.3°F suggests. It is also an offshore model value rather than a thermometer dipped in the cove below the Old Town.
In practice, 67.3°F is a swim you finish rather than a swim you settle into. Adults gasp on entry and come out looking for a towel; kids, as usual, refuse to get out. For snorkeling or an hour of paddling around the rock stacks, a shorty wetsuit changes the experience completely, and rental places along the beaches keep them through the fall. Mornings feel colder than afternoons, so swim after lunch.
We could not verify a monthly wind or swell series for this stretch of coast, so we publish no figures for either. Geography gives one useful pointer: Albufeira faces south, the sheltered aspect of the Algarve, while the fully exposed Atlantic coast begins west toward Sagres. If a boat morning matters to your trip, ask the operator about conditions the day before rather than trusting a forecast issued a week out.
How busy is Albufeira in October? Crowds and hotel prices
October lands after the peak. The European school holidays that fill the Algarve run through August and end in the first days of September, and by the second week of October the beach strips are working at a fraction of their summer load. That part is calendar, and it is solid. The ranking is not: we found no monthly occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Albufeira, so we crown no month cheapest and no month busiest by number.
Booking behaves differently than it does in summer. Flights set themselves first, since the US connections thin out in the fall, and lodging follows comfortably at four to six weeks out (est.) for a mid-range apartment. Decide on the car in the same breath as the room: with 6.0 wet days in the month, a trip built entirely on walking distance loses its rainy afternoons, and our car guide covers the tolls and the insurance trap.
On the local tourist tax, we would rather admit ignorance than guess: we could not verify Albufeira’s rate or the months in which it applies, so no amount appears here. If your property collects one, it lands at checkout as a per-person, per-night line rather than inside the rate you saw online, so ask when you book. The national spending picture sits in our Portugal trip-cost guide.
There is one line where paying more genuinely changes an October week: the pool. Plenty of Albufeira apartments and small hotels advertise a pool that is unheated, which is decoration in a month that starts its mornings at 60.4°F. Confirm heating in writing before you pay, and if the answer is vague, put the money into a base within walking reach of a beach instead, where the 67.3°F sea does the job.
Things to do in Albufeira in October: beaches, the Benagil boat run and the Old Town

October does one thing September cannot: it puts the water 1.9°F above September’s 65.4°F while dropping the air 5.6°F. A cliff walk at midday stops being a heat-management exercise, and the swim afterward is the warmest of the three shoulder months. November closes that door, with nights at 53.4°F and 6.6 wet days. So the pairing of a long walk and a real swim in the same afternoon belongs to this month.
The named targets: Praia da Falésia and its ochre cliff wall east of town, Praia dos Pescadores directly under the Old Town, the boat run along the coast to the Benagil sea cave, and the arches of Ponta da Piedade over at Lagos. We could not verify October sailing times or fares for the cave boats, so no price appears here. Call the operator the week before instead of trusting a summer timetable.
What the month changes at those places is the air around them, not the rock. The sea holds 67.3°F, within two degrees of both neighboring months, while the afternoon cools by more than five degrees from September, and that gap is the whole season. Boats are less crowded, the cliff path is walkable at 1 p.m., and the light that photographers queue for in August arrives at 6:30 p.m. instead of 8:30.
We found no verified list of October free-admission days or festival dates in Albufeira, so we name none, and an unverified event is worse than no event. What costs nothing in any month still costs nothing here: the beaches themselves, the cliff paths above them, the Old Town stairs down to the fishermen’s beach, and the fish-market end of a morning where nobody asks you to buy anything.
Albufeira in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Breakfast by 8:30, with sunrise only at 7:38 there is no dawn start to miss. Walk the cliffs between 10 and 12, when 73.9°F makes it pleasant rather than punishing. Lunch inland from the beach at 1. Swim at 3:30, after the water has taken the day’s sun. Be back on the clifftop by 6:30 for sunset at 6:56, then dinner with a jacket at 8.
Day two goes on the water: the morning boat east along the cliffs, an afternoon in the Old Town, and an early evening train or drive to Faro or Tavira if the weekend allows. If the forecast turns, flip the order and give the wet half-day to a market, a long lunch and a drive to Carvoeiro, since one October day in five records 0.04 inch or more. Our getting-around guide has the bus and rail options.
Albufeira in October vs September and November
| Measure | September | October | November |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 79.5°F | 73.9°F | 67.3°F |
| Average low | 64.9°F | 60.4°F | 53.4°F |
| Precipitation | 0.85 in | 2.20 in | 2.97 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 1.9 | 6.0 | 6.6 |
| Sea surface | 65.4°F | 67.3°F | 65.3°F |
The air cools in even steps, 5.6°F from September to October and another 6.6°F into November. Rain does not: it jumps from 0.85 inch to 2.20, and the wet-day count triples from 1.9 to 6.0 before nudging to 6.6. The sea refuses to follow the air at all, peaking across these three months in October at 67.3°F against 65.4°F and 65.3°F, since the Atlantic gives back its summer heat weeks behind the land.
Shifting four weeks earlier buys you the driest beach fortnight of the fall and afternoons approaching 80°F, at the price of the summer crowd that still fills the first week and a sea two degrees cooler. Shifting four weeks later costs 6.5°F of daytime warmth and 7°F of night, with 2.97 inches of rain, and gains a genuinely quiet coast. October sits between them holding the warmest water of the three.
Is October a good time to visit Albufeira?
Yes, for anyone who wants to swim and sightsee in the same trip: 67.3°F water, 73.9°F afternoons and a coast that has stopped operating at capacity is a strong combination for couples, walkers and off-school-calendar travelers. No, for a family whose entire plan is seven consecutive pool days, and no for anyone who cannot absorb a wet afternoon. Six wet days in thirty-one is not a gamble you can schedule around.
If the answer is no, go in September rather than November. September delivers 0.85 inch of rain across 1.9 days and highs of 79.5°F, which is the closest thing the Algarve fall offers to a guarantee, and the sea is only 1.9°F behind. November hands you the opposite trade: 2.97 inches, 6.6 wet days and 53.4°F nights. Our best-time guide sets both against the rest of the country.
No other month puts the warmest sea of the fall next to an afternoon five degrees below September’s, which is why October is the one you pick when the trip has to be half beach and half everything else along the Algarve coast.
The last word
The decision that matters in October is not where you stay, it is how much of the week you leave unbooked. Two days in an average October bring 0.39 inch of rain or more, which is a real soaking rather than a shower, and those two days will not warn you in advance. Keep the boat trip flexible, keep one museum-and-long-lunch afternoon in reserve, and check with the property whether the pool is heated before you pay for a room with a view of a cold one.
