FARO · JULY · IPMA STATION 554
July gives Faro afternoons at 84.9°F (29.4°C), nights that stop falling at 67.3°F (19.6°C), and 0.04 inches of rain for the entire month. That last number is about one millimeter. In an average July only 0.2 days record even that much, which puts the city in the rare position of not needing a wet-weather plan at all.
Off the sandbars, the water averages 66.8°F (19.3°C), and it sits within a tenth of a degree of both June and August, so no amount of waiting buys a warmer Atlantic. School holidays across Europe land in the same four weeks, and that is the part of July you plan the booking around.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · FARO IN JULY
July is heat with an empty rain column and an Atlantic stuck at 66.8°F, so come for beach days and 9 p.m. daylight, and book air conditioning before a sea view.
AVG HIGH 84.9°F · RAIN 0.04 IN · 0.2 RAIN DAYS · SEA 66.8°F · DAYLIGHT 14H 30M
Go for: boat days in the Ria Formosa with almost no rain risk, old-town mornings before 11, and evening light that holds past dinner.
Think twice before: counting on warm water or a quiet coast: 66.8°F is the summer ceiling here, and the European school holidays run right through the month.

One scope note before the numbers start doing work: they were measured in the city of Faro, at the eastern end of the coast, and they travel badly. Inland hills run cooler and much wetter, and the western tip around Sagres keeps its own weather. For the coast as a whole, see our Algarve guide; for the country across twelve months, best time to visit Portugal.
Faro weather in July: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | July at Faro | Reading |
|---|---|---|
| Average high | 84.9°F (29.4°C) | The shade figure, mid-afternoon |
| Average low | 67.3°F (19.6°C) | Just before sunrise, the coolest hour |
| Monthly rain | 0.04 in (about 1 mm) | June 0.20 in, August 0.12 in |
| Days at 1 mm or more | 0.2 | One damp day across five average Julys |
| Days at 10 mm or more | 0.0 | Absent from the 30-year normal |
| Daylight, Jul 15 | 14 h 30 m | Sunrise 06:23, sunset 20:52 local |
| Sea surface | 66.8°F (19.3°C) | Mean of daily maxima, 2015-2024 |
Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese institute for the sea and the atmosphere, station 554 in Faro, sitting 5.0 m above sea level, averaged across 1991 to 2020. The distinction is worth a sentence: this is a real thermometer in the city, not a grid cell borrowed from a reanalysis, and the two do not always agree. It reads 84.9°F in the afternoon and 67.3°F before dawn. It also reads the eastern coastal strip and nothing beyond it, so a mountain walk needs a mountain’s numbers.
Rain in July is close to a rounding error. The monthly normal is 0.04 inches, roughly one millimeter, and 0.2 days record at least that much, which works out to a single damp day spread across five average Julys. One caveat travels with the count: IPMA measures at a 1 mm threshold, while American tables usually count days at 0.10 inch, so the two sets of rain days are not interchangeable. In practice a July day here needs a sun plan, and the thing most likely to send you indoors is the heat at 3 p.m.
Between the afternoon high and the pre-dawn low sits 17.6°F of daily swing. Dinner outdoors at 9 p.m. is shirt weather rather than jacket weather, and an apartment without air conditioning never really cools overnight. Pack for heat first: sun cover for the middle of the day, one light layer for the boat back across the lagoon, and more water than feels sensible. Our Portugal packing list handles the rest of the bag.
On July 15 the sun clears the horizon at 06:23 and sets at 20:52 local time, Portugal running an hour ahead of UTC in summer, for about 14 hours 30 minutes of daylight. Two consequences shape a day: the beach becomes usable again after 5 p.m., when the sand cools and the light turns, and a 9 p.m. dinner still catches the end of it. Those times are calculated for the 15th, and both ends move a few minutes across the month.
Can you swim in Faro in July? Sea temperature and what it feels like
66.8°F (19.3°C) is the July figure for the sea surface off Faro, from the Open-Meteo Marine record averaged over 2015 to 2024. The qualifier matters as much as the number: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it describes the warmest reading of a typical day rather than a full 24-hour average, and the all-day value sits a shade below it. Tables quoting a straight daily mean will therefore run cooler than this one, and neither table is wrong.
Walking in, 66.8°F is a gasp and then a pleasure. Against air at 84.9°F the gap is 18.1°F, which is what makes the first thirty seconds sharp and the next thirty minutes easy. Children treat it as a non-issue. Adults who learned to swim in the Gulf of Mexico usually need a second attempt, and a rash guard or a shorty raises no eyebrows on Praia de Faro in high summer.
On wind and swell we have nothing verified. We found no buoy series and no wave record for Faro in July, so no figures for either appear here, and the sea temperature above comes from a reanalysis product rather than a moored instrument. The sheltered water behind the barrier islands runs warmer than the open coast, but we hold no measurement for the lagoon, so we give no number for it.
How busy is Faro in July? Crowds, booking and the tourist tax
July falls in the middle of the European school holidays, which is a calendar fact rather than a market reading, and the coast fills accordingly. What we cannot do is rank the months by price: we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Faro, so we crown no month the most expensive and quote no nightly average. Treat July as high season on the strength of the school calendar, and build the budget from our Portugal trip cost page.
Rooms with air conditioning, rental cars at the airport and the popular island boat slots are the three things that tighten first in a European summer. We would move on all three around eight to twelve weeks out (est.), earlier if one specific hotel is the point of the trip. The mechanics live in our guides to where to stay in Portugal and renting a car. Flights from the US are their own animal, and we handle those separately.
On the municipal tourist tax we have to stop short. We could not verify Faro’s current rate, whether it applies through the whole year, or how many nights it caps at, so no percentage and no per-night amount appear here. Ask the property when you book, then check the line on the final bill. Portugal’s practical paperwork, checkout included, sits in know before you go.
One upgrade changes July more than any other: the bed. With nights that bottom out at 67.3°F and afternoons at 84.9°F, air conditioning and a room that is not baking behind west-facing glass decide whether you sleep. After that, paying to park near the sand instead of circling the causeway out to Praia de Faro is the second-best money of the trip. Both beat an upgraded view you will only use after 9 p.m.
Things to do in Faro in July: the lagoon, the islands and the old town

With 0.2 rain days in the normal and 14 hours 30 minutes of light on the 15th, a full day on the water is a reasonable bet. A boat out at nine still leaves four hours of usable evening when it drops you back at the quay. The month does not improve the sights themselves. It changes how many of them fit between 06:23 and 20:52, and it moves the good hours to either end of the day.
The named places, then. Ria Formosa is the lagoon and barrier-island system the city sits behind, and boats from the waterfront run out to Ilha Deserta, Ilha do Farol and Ilha da Culatra, each a sandbar with ocean-side beach. Praia de Faro is the nearest of them, reached by the causeway off the airport road. In town, the walled Cidade Velha holds the cathedral and the Arco da Vila, and the Capela dos Ossos at the Igreja do Carmo is the bone chapel people come for.
The water barely moves across the summer while the air does not sit still. June, July and August read 66.9, 66.8 and 66.8°F at the surface, while the afternoon air climbs 4.7°F from June into July. What changes at Praia de Faro is the 18.1°F you cross getting in, and how much shade you want afterward. The same arithmetic sets the old-town clock: lanes and cathedral before 11 a.m., the bone chapel and thick walls in the middle of the day.
We could not verify any free-admission day at Faro’s museums for July, so we name none. What costs nothing anyway: the walk through the old town gates, the paths along the salt pans on the lagoon edge, the sand at Praia de Faro, and the last hour of light before 20:52. Families weighing the same month elsewhere in the country will find the comparison in Portugal with kids.
Faro in July: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs early and late with a hole in the middle. Out by 7:30 while the Cidade Velha is still in shade, cathedral and Arco da Vila first, coffee inside the walls. Mid-morning boat into the Ria Formosa for Ilha Deserta or Farol, swim taken on the ocean side before the sun is overhead. Back in town by 2 p.m. and do nothing until 5, because 84.9°F is the shade reading and the sand runs hotter. Second swim at 6, dinner at 8:30, sunset at 20:52.
Day two goes east or stays put. The train to Tavira makes a comfortable half-day of river, salt pans and one more island beach, while the cliffs west toward Lagos and Benagil are a car day rather than a morning. Should the sky go gray, the plan holds: with 0.2 rain days in the normal, gray here mostly means cooler, and the sea is 66.8°F with or without sun. The weather that cancels a boat day is wind, and on wind we have no July record to quote.
Faro in July vs June and August
| Measure | June | July | August |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 80.2°F (26.8°C) | 84.9°F (29.4°C) | 84.6°F (29.2°C) |
| Average low | 64.0°F (17.8°C) | 67.3°F (19.6°C) | 67.8°F (19.9°C) |
| Monthly rain | 0.20 in | 0.04 in | 0.12 in |
| Days at 1 mm or more | 0.8 | 0.2 | 0.2 |
| Sea surface | 66.9°F | 66.8°F | 66.8°F |
Line the three up and two of them are near twins. June comes in at 80.2°F by day and 64.0°F at night, with 0.20 inches of rain over 0.8 days. July reads 84.9 and 67.3, with 0.04 inch over 0.2 days. August reads 84.6 and 67.8, with 0.12 inch over the same 0.2 days. July and August separate by 0.3°F in the afternoon and 0.5°F overnight. The sea hardly separates them at all: 66.9, 66.8, 66.8°F.
Shift four weeks either way and the trades are small. Going back to June saves 4.7°F of afternoon heat and hands you the same water, at a cost of 0.8 rain days instead of 0.2 and five times the monthly total. Our Faro in June page runs those figures in full. Going forward to August keeps July’s heat almost exactly, adds half a degree to the nights, and stays inside the same school-holiday window, so the crowd relief people expect from a later date does not arrive.
Is July a good time to visit Faro?
Yes, if you want a beach month with an empty rain column and you can take 84.9°F in the afternoon. No, if the trip is built around long swims in comfortable water, because 66.8°F is what the Atlantic offers here all summer, or if a coast crowded by Europe’s school holidays is precisely the thing you were trying to dodge.
When the answer lands on no, June is the month to move to on the numbers we hold: 80.2°F afternoons, 64.0°F nights, the same 66.9°F sea, bought with a few more rain days. We have no September normals for Faro in hand, so we make no claim about the fall. The full twelve-month view of the country sits in best time to visit Portugal, and the coastal detail in our Algarve guide.
What July alone holds in this trio: a monthly rain normal of 0.04 inches, a third of August’s and a fifth of June’s, paired with light that lasts until 20:52.
The last word
Choose July on the crowd and the heat, since the water is an unchanging 66.8°F in June, July and August alike. One figure we held back: across the 1991-2020 normal, Faro’s July shows 0.0 days reaching 10 mm of rain, so a washed-out day does not exist in the thirty-year average. Book the room with air conditioning first, sort the transport second, and leave the island boat to be picked on the morning of.
