TAVIRA · AUGUST · THE EASTERN ALGARVE
Tavira’s August is the driest stretch of its year. IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, gives the month an average high of 84.6°F and an average low of 67.8°F at its station 554 in Faro, just west of Tavira on the same sheltered eastern coast, with 0.12 inches of precipitation for the whole month across the 1991-2020 normals. The Atlantic off the sandbanks averages 66.8°F, a figure that comes from marine model data rather than from the station.
The light runs long: 13 hours 37 minutes on August 15, sunrise at 06:47 and sunset at 20:24 in local time, with an average of 0.2 days recording even 1 mm of rain. August is also Europe’s school-holiday month, and the ferry queue to Ilha de Tavira shows it. Anyone free to move their dates should read the September column carefully before booking a thing.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · TAVIRA IN AUGUST
August gives Tavira 0.12 inches of rain, sea at 66.8°F level with July, and light on the river until 20:24, in exchange for the busiest ferries of the year.
IPMA NORMALS 1991-2020 · STATION 554 FARO, 5.0 M · SEA FROM OPEN-METEO MARINE 2015-2024
Go for: beach mornings that almost never get rained off, 13 hours 37 minutes of daylight on the 15th, and a swim in the warmest water the marine record gives this coast all summer.
Think twice before: assuming warm means warm. The sea averages 66.8°F as a mean of daily maxima, nearly 18°F below the air. We also found no room-rate series for Tavira, so we price nothing here.

Every figure here comes from one thermometer and one model. The air normals below were measured at IPMA’s station 554 in Faro, 5.0 m above sea level, west of Tavira on the same sheltered coast: a real instrument, not a grid cell. Inland is another matter, since high ground runs colder and far wetter, so nobody should pack for a walk in the Serra on a coastal reading. The sea number is a different animal, a 2015-2024 average from the Open-Meteo Marine API.
Tavira weather in August: average highs, lows and rain days
| August at Tavira, IPMA station 554 (Faro) | Value |
|---|---|
| Average high | 84.6°F (29.2°C) |
| Average low | 67.8°F (19.9°C) |
| Total precipitation | 0.12 in |
| Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more | 0.2 |
| Days with 10 mm (0.39 in) or more | 0.1 |
| Sea surface, mean of daily maxima | 66.8°F (19.3°C) |
| Daylight, August 15 | 13 h 37 min |
| Sunrise / sunset, August 15 | 06:47 / 20:24 local |
That 84.6°F average high is the mean of daily maximum readings across thirty Augusts, not a ceiling: plenty of individual afternoons run well above it. The 67.8°F average low generally lands in the hour before sunrise, which is also the only genuinely cool hour of the day. Between the two sits a month with 0.12 inches of total precipitation, under a seventh of September’s 0.85 inches, all of it from the same IPMA series at 5.0 m.
Wet days barely register. IPMA counts 0.2 days in an average August at 1 mm (0.04 inch) or more, which works out to one such day every five Augusts, and 0.1 day at 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more, roughly one real soaking per decade. A caution on the thresholds: US monthly tables usually count days at 0.10 inch, so these counts are not interchangeable with what you may have read elsewhere. Neither count says anything about thunder over the hills inland, where the Faro station has no say.
16.8°F separates the average high from the average low, and the drop arrives after sunset rather than during it. A cotton layer covers dinner by the river at 21:00; anything heavier is dead weight in a carry-on. Daytime kit matters more: a hat, a refillable bottle, and shoes that handle cobbles at 84.6°F. Our packing guide has the full Portuguese-summer list.
On August 15 the sun rises at 06:47 and sets at 20:24 local time, 13 hours 37 minutes apart. Usable beach light starts before 8 a.m. and returns from 6 p.m., with the four hours in the middle belonging to shade, a long lunch or a boat ride back to town. At 20:00 there is still light for a walk across the old bridge.
Can you swim in Tavira in August? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The August sea-surface average off Tavira is 66.8°F, and how it is built matters: it is the mean of daily maxima over 2015-2024, taken from the Open-Meteo Marine API, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour mean. Tables that average the full day will show a slightly cooler figure, and neither version is wrong. Both come from a model of the sea surface; no buoy off the island feeds them.
Air at 84.6°F over water at 66.8°F is a gap of nearly 18°F, and it is what makes the first thirty seconds sharp. Adults settle in quickly after that. Small children usually prefer the lagoon shallows behind the island, where a foot of water sits over sun-warmed sand, and we have no measurement for those channels, so 66.8°F stands for open water off the barrier beaches only.
We found no August wind or wave series for this stretch of coast, so no figures for either appear here. What the geography gives: Tavira faces a barrier island across the Ria Formosa, and the swimming happens on the island’s ocean beaches or in the lagoon behind them, not off a town seafront. Anyone counting on flat water for a paddleboard morning should ask at the quay the evening before instead of trusting a monthly average.
How busy is Tavira in August? Crowds, prices and when to book
August falls inside the European school-holiday block, which is a fact of the calendar and nothing more. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for Tavira, so we crown no month expensive and quote no percentage. For what a trip here runs in broad terms, our Portugal trip-cost guide works through the tiers, and it is the right place for numbers we can stand behind.
Lock the bed first, the car second. Our own habit for August in the eastern Algarve is to book lodging six to eight weeks out (est.), and that is editorial judgment, not a figure from a rate series. Flights from the US reach this coast through Faro, covered in our flights guide and our Faro page; the case for and against a rental car sits in the car guide.
We could not verify a municipal lodging-tax rate for Tavira, so we give no amount and no percentage. Ask at check-in what is added and on what basis, and keep the receipt if you are claiming anything back. The paperwork side of a Portugal trip, from entry rules to payment habits, is in know before you go.
One upgrade changes an August week here more than any other: a bed within walking distance of the river and the ferry quay. Average lows of 67.8°F make air conditioning a comfort rather than a rescue, and the real gain is never having to drive and park at 3 p.m. in 84.6°F heat. Where the different bases sit, and what each costs in walking minutes, is in our where-to-stay guide.
Things to do in Tavira in August: Ilha de Tavira, Praia do Barril and the Ria Formosa

Two things August does that September cannot: it holds the sea at 66.8°F, level with July and 1.4°F above September, and it holds rain at 0.12 inches against September’s 0.85. Sandbank plans hold, boat mornings hold, and the hour after 19:00 is still bright enough to swim in. In exchange, midday belongs indoors, with the average high at 84.6°F.
The island is the main event. Ilha de Tavira is a barrier sandbank in the Ria Formosa, reached by ferry from the quay in town or on foot across the bridge at Pedras d’el Rei for Praia do Barril, where a field of retired tuna anchors stands in the dunes. Cabanas de Tavira has its own short crossing to sand. In town, the old arched bridge, the castle garden and Santa Maria do Castelo sit a few blocks apart. Check the board at the quay for current ferry fares and first and last crossings.
Water temperature is the part that barely moves across the summer: 66.8°F in July, 66.8°F in August, 65.4°F in September. Air is what turns, from 84.6°F now to 79.5°F four weeks later. That is why an August swim feels bracing and a September swim feels mild in water that is genuinely colder. On the sand, the same 18°F spread makes a shade tent worth its packing space by 11 a.m.
We could not verify any August admission waivers or free days at Tavira’s sites, so we name none. What costs nothing in any month: the salt-pan tracks east of town, the market square and riverfront, the walk out through Barril’s dunes, and the 20:24 sunset from the old bridge in mid-month. More of the year-round list lives on our Tavira page.
Tavira in August: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Coffee and the riverside market before 09:00, then the morning boat out to the island so you are in the water well before the air reaches its 84.6°F average. Back for lunch by 13:00, and give the next three hours to shade, a cold drink and the castle garden’s trees. Out again at 18:00 for Santa Maria do Castelo, the bridge and a dinner table that is still in daylight at 20:00.
Day two swaps the ferry for the footbridge: Pedras d’el Rei, the crossing to Praia do Barril, the anchors, a long swim, then Cabanas in the late afternoon. If one of those 0.2 wet days lands on you, or the rarer 10 mm soaking that turns up about one August in ten, run west to Faro for indoor hours or keep the day in town. Nothing in the normals supports building a rain day into an August plan here.
Tavira in August vs July and September
| Measure | July | August | September |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 84.9°F | 84.6°F | 79.5°F |
| Average low | 67.3°F | 67.8°F | 64.9°F |
| Precipitation | 0.04 in | 0.12 in | 0.85 in |
| Days at 1 mm (0.04 in) or more | 0.2 | 0.2 | 1.9 |
| Sea surface, daily maxima | 66.8°F | 66.8°F | 65.4°F |
July and August are twins on the thermometer: 84.9°F against 84.6°F by day, 67.3°F against 67.8°F at night, differences of 0.3°F and 0.5°F. Rain separates them barely, 0.04 inches against 0.12, with the same 0.2 wet days each. September is the real step down: 79.5°F days, 64.9°F nights, 0.85 inches of rain across 1.9 wet days, and the sea at 65.4°F. The air figures are IPMA normals from station 554, the sea figures the marine API’s 2015-2024 average.
Shift four weeks later and you lose 5.1°F of daytime warmth, 1.4°F of water, and the near-certainty of a dry week as wet days go from 0.2 to 1.9. You gain the end of the school-holiday block, a calendar gain we cannot put a price behind. Shift the other way, into July, and you gain almost nothing measurable. The whole-year view is in our best time to visit Portugal verdict.
Is August a good time to visit Tavira?
Yes for travelers whose weeks are fixed by a school calendar and whose plan is sand, lagoon and long evenings. An average 0.12 inches of rain and 13 hours 37 minutes of daylight on the 15th are close to the best odds a beach week ever gets. No for anyone who wants quiet ferries, comfortable walking weather on the salt pans, or a hill day in the Serra, where these coastal normals simply do not apply.
If that second group is you, September is the month to move to: 79.5°F afternoons are a different proposition, the sea still holds 65.4°F, and 1.9 wet days on average leaves most of the month dry. The other direction gains you little, and our July page has those numbers if you want them side by side.
No other month pairs water at its July level, 66.8°F, with light still on the river at 20:24.
The last word
Pick your dates for the water temperature first, book the bed early, and surrender midday without guilt. One practical trap before you plan an evening around any timetable you find online: sunrise and sunset for this coast are often published in UTC, and Portugal runs an hour ahead of UTC in August, so the 05:47 and 19:24 you may read are 06:47 and 20:24 on the clock in your room. Check the offset before you promise anyone a sunset from the bridge.
