The Algarve in April runs on mild afternoons and long evenings. At Faro the average high is 69.3°F, the sun sets around 20:08 local time in mid-month, and a vacation built around cliff paths, fortresses and seafood lunches has the weather on its side. The water is cooler, at 63.5°F, and April comes before any Algarve beach has a lifeguard on duty.
Portugal’s official gazette fixes the 2026 lifeguarded season beach by beach. Albufeira opens on May 15, and most other councils open on June 1, so every April swim is unsupervised. Add the Benagil rules (no swimming into the sea cave, no landing on its beach) and April becomes a month for walking, driving and paddling with a guide. Families planning a lifeguarded beach week usually do better waiting for late May.

Every figure here comes from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, and its 1991–2020 normals for station 554 at Faro. It is a real thermometer 5 meters above sea level, not a reanalysis grid cell. In April that station averages a high of 69.3°F, a low of 54.3°F and 1.54 inches of precipitation. Faro sits at the eastern end of a coast about 150 km (93 miles) long, so read these as coastal numbers: the hills inland run colder and far wetter, and the far end of the coast keeps weather of its own.
Rain touches 5.3 April days at Faro on IPMA’s threshold of 1 mm (0.04 inch), roughly one day in six. Only 1.3 days bring 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more, the kind of rain that cancels a boat trip or a cliff walk. US tables count from 0.10 inch, so their April totals look lower and the two counts do not line up. Plan on one showery day in a six-day visit and, on average, one properly wet day in the month.
Between the 54.3°F average low and the 69.3°F high sit 15 degrees, enough to turn a T-shirt lunch into a jacket dinner. Pack a fleece or light sweater for evenings and early starts, a wind shell for the clifftops, and one pair of shoes with grip for paths that stay damp after a shower. On April 15 the Algarve gets about 13 hours 13 minutes of daylight. Sunrise falls at 06:55 and sunset at 20:08 on Lisbon summer time (05:55 and 19:08 UTC). A day trip to Sagres or Lagos can end with a clifftop sunset and still leave time for a late dinner.
Swimming in the Algarve in April: sea temperature
Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea off the Algarve at 63.5°F in April, averaged over 2015–2024. That figure is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade above a 24-hour average. Tables built on 24-hour means print a lower April number, and both are right about what they measure.
At 63.5°F the water feels cold on entry and bracing after a few minutes: fine for a quick dip on a sunny afternoon, chilly for a long swim without a wetsuit. Supervision matters more than temperature. The 2026 gazette order starts Albufeira’s lifeguarded season on May 15, and Lagos, Lagoa, Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Silves, Aljezur and Vila do Bispo on June 1, so no council on the coast has lifeguards in April. Swim close to shore, with company, and stay out of the Benagil cave, where swimming in is banned outright.
We could not verify wind or swell figures for April, so we give no odds for rough seas. Check the marine forecast on the morning you plan to swim or paddle, and ask your kayak operator how it handles a rough day.
How busy is the Algarve in April? Crowds and prices
We found no occupancy series or monthly hotel rates for the Algarve, so we crown no month cheap or expensive. The legal calendar is fixed, though: April falls before the beach season on every stretch of coast, since lifeguards arrive on May 15 in Albufeira and June 1 in most other councils. Benagil tours cap how many craft sit inside the cave at once and how long each group stays, so reserve a guided kayak or paddleboard slot before you fly. We would book it two to three weeks ahead (est.). A rental car from Faro airport is the other early booking, and our car-rental guide covers insurance and pickup.
We could not verify a tourist tax rate for Algarve councils, so we give no amount. Ask your hotel or rental host at booking whether a municipal fee applies and whether the quoted price includes it.
A licensed guided paddle is where spending more changes an April trip. Motorboats get two minutes inside Benagil, while a guided kayak or paddleboard group can stay up to eight. Renting a kayak to go in alone has been off the table since July 2025, so the guided tour is the only way to spend real time under the dome.
Things to do in the Algarve in April
April is walking weather: a 69.3°F average high at Faro, 13 hours 13 minutes of daylight, and cliff paths without the 74.3°F highs May brings. With no lifeguarded beach anywhere until mid-May, the month favors headlands, forts and sea caves over a towel on the sand.
At Benagil, the national maritime authority’s Edital 019/2024, in force since August 13, 2024 and amended by Edital 009/2025, bans swimming into the sea cave from the beach or a boat, with or without a float, and bans any landing on the beach inside. Licensed guided kayak and paddleboard tours may enter. At the western tip, the Fortaleza de Sagres opens 09:30 to 17:30, last entry 17:00, and one ticket covers the fortress and the promontory. Ask at the gate for the adult ticket price.
In April the sea sits 5.8°F below the average high (63.5°F against 69.3°F). By May that gap widens to 10.9°F, because the high climbs to 74.3°F while the sea holds at 63.4°F. A paddle into Benagil in April means cool water under mild air, and a spill brings the same chill it would in May.
Driving between the two costs nothing in tolls. Infraestruturas de Portugal keeps the A22, the Via do Infante that runs the length of the Algarve, at a zero toll rate under Lei n.º 37/2024, a rate shared by the A24, the A25, the Marão tunnel and parts of the A28 and A23 but not by Portuguese motorways in general. Sagres is free on Sundays and public holidays until 14:00 only for residents of Portugal, so visitors pay every day.
The Algarve in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one heads west on the toll-free A22. Reach the Fortaleza de Sagres at its 09:30 opening and walk the promontory while the morning is cool, then drive to Lagos for lunch. Spend the afternoon on the clifftop path to Ponta da Piedade, keep the fleece in the bag for the evening drop toward the 54.3°F average low, and stay out for sunset around 20:08.
Day two starts at Benagil with a morning guided kayak or paddleboard tour and up to eight minutes inside the cave. If the weather turns (April averages 1.3 days of 10 mm rain or more), swap the paddle for the old town of Faro or Tavira, then head back west to Carvoeiro if the afternoon clears. Against March, April adds 3.3°F to the average high and 2.9°F to the low, trims precipitation from 1.84 to 1.54 inches and wet days from 5.6 to 5.3, and warms the sea by 2.6°F, from 60.9°F to 63.5°F. May then adds another 5.0°F to the high and 4.7°F to the low, cuts rain to 1.03 inches over 3.8 wet days, and leaves the sea flat at 63.4°F, a tenth of a degree below April.
Shift four weeks later and you gain warmer evenings, fewer wet days and, from May 15, lifeguards on Albufeira’s 25 listed beaches, while every other council still waits until June 1. Is April a good time to visit the Algarve?
Yes, for walkers, drivers and paddlers: 69.3°F highs, long evenings and a toll-free A22 suit a road trip along the cliffs, and guided tours still get you inside Benagil. No, for a family beach vacation that depends on lifeguards, because no Algarve council has them on duty before May 15. Portugal with kids covers other family options.

April puts the sea at May’s level, 63.5°F against 63.4°F, with afternoons five degrees cooler for walking.
The last word
Decide on the water first. If your April trip means swimming, go knowing no Algarve beach has a lifeguard and keep dips short and close to shore. If it means Benagil, book the guided paddle and watch the arches: motorboats must keep 15 meters off them and enter by the western arch, leaving the eastern arch to kayaks and paddleboards like yours.
