April is the month the Algarve stops being a beach and starts being a coast. Afternoons settle around 69°F, the cliff path west of Lagos becomes a pleasure rather than a heat-management exercise, and the terraces in Tavira fill without a wait list. The water, as ever, has its own opinion.
Two figures set the month. The Faro weather station records 1.54 inches of rain in an average April, spread over 5.3 days. The sea off the coast averages 63.5°F. One of those makes April excellent, the other makes it a wetsuit month, and the distance between them is the whole argument for or against booking now.

Think twice before: booking a beach-only week. At 63.5°F the sea is a ten-minute swim for most adults, and every council on the coast is still without lifeguard cover in April.

IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, keeps station 554 at Faro, five meters above sea level, and its 1991-2020 April normals read 69.3°F (20.7°C) for the average high, 54.3°F (12.4°C) for the average low, and 1.54 inches of rain over the month. That is a thermometer, not a model grid cell interpolated over water. It is also the eastern end of a coast some 95 miles long: the Monchique hills inland run colder and far wetter, and the western capes keep their own weather.
Rain shows up on 5.3 days in an average April, counting any day with at least 1 mm (0.04 inch). Only 1.3 of those days reach 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more. American tables usually set the bar at 0.10 inch, so the two counts are not interchangeable. In practice that is roughly one wet day in six, most of them a morning shower that clears by lunch, plus one heavy day in the month that sends the whole coast indoors.
Fifteen degrees separate the average high from the average low. A 69°F afternoon on a Carvoeiro terrace turns into a 54°F walk back to the room, and the drop arrives quickly once the sun leaves the cliffs. A fleece and a light rain shell cover almost every April evening. Swimwear and a tote cover almost none of them, which our packing guide spells out in full.
On April 15 the sun rises at 6:55 a.m. and sets at 8:08 p.m. local time, clocks already on summer time, for 13 hours 13 minutes of daylight. That funds a full morning walk, a slow lunch and a second outing at six with light to spare. Dinner at eight still starts in daylight.
Can you swim in the Algarve in April? A 63.5°F sea, and no lifeguards yet
Open-Meteo’s marine dataset puts the sea surface off the Algarve at 63.5°F (17.5°C) in April, averaged over 2015 to 2024. One caveat matters more than the decimal: that number is the mean of daily maxima, not a flat 24-hour average. The water you meet is a shade cooler than the figure, and coolest first thing in the morning, before the sun has worked on the top layer.
So yes, swimmable, and yes, cold. Expect the first thirty seconds to take your breath, then ten to fifteen minutes of tolerable water for most adults, then numb fingers. Children last less. A 3 mm wetsuit turns the same swim into an hour. And nobody is watching: the 2026 gazette order fixes lifeguard cover from May 15 in Albufeira, and from June 1 in Lagos, Lagoa, Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Silves, Aljezur and Vila do Bispo.
On wind and swell we have a gap to admit: our sources carry no April-specific normal for this coast, and we would rather leave the line blank than invent one. The same order does say which beaches count as bathing beaches and where cover is guaranteed once the season opens. A beach missing from that list had no assured lifeguard on the date of publication. Water-quality results are published by the national environment agency during the season, so in April the latest ones you can read are last year’s.
How busy is the Algarve in April? Crowds, prices and the May 15 season start
April sits squarely in the shoulder, and the legal calendar states it more plainly than any price chart: no Algarve council puts a lifeguard on a beach before May 15, and nine of them wait until June 1. Hotels are open, the coast road moves, restaurants seat you on the spot, and the towns run at something like two-thirds volume (est.). Four to six weeks of lead time covers most of April (est.), with two exceptions worth respecting. Rental cars on the coast price up long before the rooms do, and sea-view stock in Albufeira and Carvoeiro goes ahead of everything set back from the water. If your dates ride on a transatlantic connection, sort the flying first: getting to Portugal from the US covers the routings into Faro and Lisbon.
On the municipal tourist tax, we will only say what we can back. Our sources carry no verified per-night figure for Algarve councils in 2026, so this guide quotes none. Ask the property to state the amount when you book, and expect it as a line on the final bill rather than inside the nightly rate.
The one upgrade that changes April is the car. With 5.3 rain days scattered through the month, the ability to drive away from a gray morning is worth more than a bigger room, and the good hours are spread over 95 miles of coast. The A22, the Via do Infante, is reported to have run toll-free since January 1, 2025, though we could not confirm it on a readable operator page, so keep tolls in the budget and check before you drive. Things to do in the Algarve in April: Sagres, Benagil and the cliff paths
April is the walking month. Highs of 69.3°F and 13 hours of light make the cliff sections between Praia da Luz and Lagos, or the boardwalks around Ponta da Piedade, a genuine pleasure. In August the same stretch is a water-carrying calculation with a hat. The trade is simple enough to state: you walk this coast in spring and you swim it in summer.
The Fortaleza de Sagres opens 09:30 to 17:30, last entry half an hour before closing, with a single ticket covering the fortress and the promontory. We could not read the adult price at source, since the monument’s own page loads its price table in JavaScript and the regional ticket shop was unreachable, so ask at the gate. At Benagil, Edital 019/2024 from the maritime authority, amended by Edital 009/2025, bars swimmers from entering the cave, whether from the beach or from a boat, and bars any craft from landing on the sand inside.
Free in April: the coast path, every beach along it, and that 8 p.m. light. Guided kayak and paddleboard tours at Benagil are allowed again with a licensed guide, a cap on how many craft are inside at once and a time limit per group, while motorized boats keep 15 meters off the arches and enter by the western arch, non-motorized craft by the eastern one. Worth knowing before you book a tour. Sagres waives entry on Sundays and public holidays until 14:00, but only for residents of Portugal, so a visitor pays whatever the day.
The Algarve in April: a two-day itinerary
Day one, Lagos. Out at eight, an hour after the 6:55 sunrise, for the cliff path to Ponta da Piedade before the tour boats load. Back in town by eleven for coffee and the market streets, lunch at one, indoors if the morning turned out to be one of the 5.3. Mid-afternoon is the warmest slice of the day at 69°F, which is your swim window if you are swimming at all: keep it short, and remember nobody is watching the water. Terrace at six, dinner at eight in daylight.
Day two, west. Drive the hour to Sagres and reach the fortress at 09:30 when it opens, while the promontory is still empty, then Cabo de São Vicente, then east along the coast in the afternoon. If the sky turns, invert the day: kayak tours need workable water, so trade Benagil for Tavira‘s covered market and salt-pan edges, and keep the fortress for the clear afternoon. One day in an average April tops 10 mm of rain, and no outdoor plan survives it.

Air temperature climbs in even steps across the three months, 66.0°F to 69.3°F to 74.3°F, with nights following at 51.4, 54.3 and 59.0. Rain runs the other direction, 1.84 inches down to 1.54 and then 1.03, and wet days go 5.6, 5.3, 3.8. The sea is the outlier: 60.9°F in March, 63.5°F in April, 63.4°F in May. At a tenth of a degree apart, April and May are the same water.
Pushing four weeks later buys five degrees of afternoon, half an inch less rain, and lifeguards on Albufeira’s 25 listed beaches from May 15. It costs quiet paths and shoulder rates. Pulling back to March costs 3.3 degrees of air and 2.6 degrees of sea for a coast quieter still, plus one more wet day. Each month gets its own page: March and May.
Is April a good time to visit the Algarve?
For walkers, drivers, photographers and anyone whose ideal day ends on a cliff at seven in the evening, April is one of the two best months on this coast. For a family whose entire trip is measured in hours in the sea, it is a mistake with good weather attached. A 63.5°F swim at an unsupervised beach is not a vacation plan for a nine-year-old, whatever the sun is doing overhead.
If that is your trip, move it. June 1 is the date that matters, when the nine councils from Lagos to Vila do Bispo put lifeguards on their beaches. Basing in Albufeira pulls the same guarantee forward to May 15, which is the only way to get supervised swimming and shoulder-ish air in one booking.
What no other month hands you: 69.3°F afternoons and 13 hours of light on a coast path with almost nobody on it, and rain already down to 1.54 inches.
The last word
Book April for the land and treat the water as a bonus, and the month behaves. Rent the car, sleep west if the cliffs are the point, and put the Sagres fortress at 09:30 on the clear morning rather than the cloudy one. And for scale on how uneven this coast’s season really is: one beach in Castro Marim gets lifeguards only from July 1 to August 31, six weeks in a twelve-month year.
