Braga in November: Weather, Rain Days, Short Daylight and a Two-Day Plan

Braga in November averages 62.6°F in the afternoon and 42.8°F before dawn, and it collects 6.70 inches of rain across 12.9 days. Daylight on the 15th runs 9 hours 54 minutes, with the sun gone by 5:15 pm. That is the month in four numbers, and most of the decision follows from them.

What November gives is a cool city at climbing temperature and the lowest rain total of October, November and December. What it takes is light and certainty: the outdoor half of a Braga day has to fit between mid-morning and four, and roughly two days in five arrive wet. Whether that trade suits you depends on what you came for, and the normals below settle most of it.

November hands Braga the driest total of the fall at 6.70 inches and afternoons near 62.6°F, but only 9 hours 54 minutes of light, so the outdoor block goes before 4 pm and the evening goes indoors.

Go for: the Bom Jesus stairway at 62.6°F instead of October’s 72.0°F, long lunches, granite lanes, and the lowest rain total of the fall’s three months.

Think twice before: pinning a fixed outdoor plan to these dates: 5.8 days a month deliver 0.39 inch of rain or more, and the light is gone at 5:15 pm.

Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese institute for the sea and the atmosphere, and from a single instrument: station 622 at Braga Merelim, 68.4 m up, a real thermometer rather than a model grid cell. Its 1991-2020 November normals read 62.6°F (17°C) by day, 42.8°F (6°C) by night and 6.70 inches of precipitation. They describe the valley floor of inland Minho. High ground north and east is colder and far wetter, and the coast keeps its own weather, so do not pack for a mountain trail on a Merelim reading.

Rain reaches the gauge on 12.9 days in an average November, about four days in nine, and 5.8 of those bring 0.39 inch or more, a soaking rather than a shower, roughly one day in five. IPMA counts at its own thresholds, 0.04 inch and 0.39 inch, not the 0.10 inch used by American climate tables, so the two sets of counts are not interchangeable. None of it says when the rain falls, so treat any dry block as usable and keep the indoor option within walking distance.

Between the 42.8°F night and the 62.6°F afternoon sits a swing of 19.8°F, and both ends turn up in the same day of sightseeing. A waterproof shell, one warm mid-layer you can carry by 2 pm and shoes that cope with wet granite cover the month. Our packing guide has the full list. An umbrella-only plan is thin cover when 5.8 days a month go past 0.39 inch.

Daylight on November 15 runs 9 hours 54 minutes, sunrise at 7:21 am, sunset at 5:15 pm local time. Breakfast lands close to first light, and the last useful outdoor hour starts around 4 pm with the light already low. Anything with a view belongs in the early afternoon. Dinner is a walk in full darkness, so a central bed quietly saves the evening.

How warm is Braga in November?

The month has two anchors, 62.6°F by day and 42.8°F by night, a spread of 19.8°F, and both are averages over thirty Novembers rather than a forecast for yours. Braga sits inland in the Minho, well back from the Atlantic, and we found no sea temperature series for the city, so we publish no water figure. Where such tables do exist they average daily maxima, which reads warmer than a 24-hour mean, worth remembering before you set a coastal page beside these normals.

Mornings at 42.8°F want a real jacket. Afternoons at 62.6°F want none of it, and the workable uniform is a shell over a sweater at 9 am and the sweater alone by 3 pm. Church interiors run cooler than the street once the sun is out, so the layer stays in the daypack rather than back at the hotel.

Averages cannot settle the frost question. A mean low of 42.8°F sits about 11°F above freezing, and a monthly figure hides its coldest nights inside itself. We could not verify a frost-night count for Braga Merelim, so we give none. Plan for mornings in the low 40s and treat anything colder as the tail of the record.

How busy is Braga in November? Crowds, prices and the lodging tax

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Braga, so we crown no month cheap and none expensive. What we can date is the weather and the light: 12.9 wet days and a 5:15 pm sunset, in a city that does most of its sightseeing outdoors. For the national picture, our trip cost guide and the month-by-month verdict for Portugal go further than one city’s normals can.

Without rate data we will not tell you how many weeks ahead to book. The case for booking early has nothing to do with price and everything to do with choice: two nights inside the walkable center rather than a room that needs a car at 5:15 pm in the rain. The case for staying flexible is 5.8 heavy rain days, enough to turn a non-refundable weekend into an indoor one. Book refundable rather than simply early.

We could not verify a lodging tax rate for Braga, so we quote no per-night amount and no exemption. Ask at check-in and read the reservation’s fine print, since this kind of charge is often collected at the property instead of online. Our know-before-you-go guide covers the paperwork side of a Portuguese stay.

One upgrade genuinely changes November, and it is location. With 9 hours 54 minutes of daylight and rain four days in nine, a room in the center turns a wet evening into a two-minute walk to dinner instead of a drive and a parking hunt. Spend there before anything else. A car is still useful for the day trips north and east, and our car guide explains the tolls.

Things to do in Braga in November: Bom Jesus do Monte, the Sé and Sameiro

An afternoon at 62.6°F is exactly what the Bom Jesus stairway asks for: that long zigzag of landings and fountains is easier work than under October’s 72.0°F. The rain is the trade. With 5.8 heavy days in the month, put the climb in a clear window and keep a second, indoor option ready for the same afternoon.

The sanctuary of Bom Jesus do Monte stands above the city on its wooded hill, reached on foot by the stairway or by the water-counterweight funicular beside it. We could not verify the funicular’s November timetable or fare, so check before you set out. Down in the center, the Sé anchors the old town a few minutes from the Santa Bárbara garden and the Archbishop’s Palace, and the Sameiro sanctuary occupies the next hill. For none of them could we confirm November opening hours.

Stone and box hedge do not move with the calendar. The air does: 62.6°F and 42.8°F against October’s 72.0°F and 50.2°F, a jacket’s worth of difference on the same terrace. Light moves more. With sunset at 5:15 pm, the view from the Bom Jesus terrace is a two o’clock plan rather than an evening one, and the descent belongs inside daylight too, because those steps hold water.

Walking the old center costs nothing, and so does climbing the stairway on foot, the alternative to a funicular fare we could not verify. We also could not confirm whether any site here waives admission during November, so we promise no free museum day and no free Sunday.

Braga in November: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Sunrise at 7:21 am makes breakfast unhurried, then the old center takes the morning: the Sé and the lanes around it from 9:30, the Santa Bárbara garden next door, lunch at one. Take the hill at two, on foot or by funicular, and stand on the terrace by three while the light is still high. Back down by 4:30, dark at 5:15, dinner within walking distance of the bed you booked.

Day two goes to the second hill or the next town. Sameiro is the short version, Guimarães the longer one, and our getting-around guide has the trains. If the sky turns, and 12.9 wet days say it can, invert the order: indoor hours at midday, the outdoor block in whatever dry window the afternoon gives you, and the hilltop saved for the better of your two days. One clear afternoon out of two is the realistic ask this month.

Braga in November vs October and December

Normal, 1991-2020 October November December
Average high 72.0°F 62.6°F 58.8°F
Average low 50.2°F 42.8°F 38.7°F
Precipitation 7.79 in 6.70 in 7.49 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 12.0 12.9 13.3

October runs 72.0°F by day and 50.2°F by night, November 62.6°F and 42.8°F, December 58.8°F and 38.7°F, so the big step down is the one already taken: 9.4°F off the afternoon between October and November, then 3.8°F more into December. Rain reverses the intuition. November is the driest of the three by total, 6.70 inches against October’s 7.79 and December’s 7.49, and still counts more wet days than October, 12.9 against 12.0. For this inland city no month of the three carries a sea temperature we could verify.

Shift four weeks earlier and you buy 9.4°F of afternoon and 7.4°F of night for 1.09 more inches of rain: our October page makes that case in full. Shift four weeks later and December takes 3.8°F off the day, 4.1°F off the night, then adds 0.79 inch of rain and four tenths of a wet day. Neither move buys a dry month, so the real choice is how much afternoon warmth you want to pay for in rainfall.

Is November a good time to visit Braga?

Yes for walkers, and for anyone whose Braga is a cathedral, a stairway and a two-hour lunch: 62.6°F is comfortable climbing weather, and four wet days in nine leave five that are not. No for a fixed outdoor plan that needs consecutive dry days, no for a beach add-on, and no if a 5:15 pm sunset wrecks the shape of your day.

When the answer is no, move to October rather than December: 72.0°F afternoons and 50.2°F nights against December’s 58.8°F and 38.7°F, with 12.0 wet days against 13.3. October pays for that with the wettest total of the three, 7.79 inches, and it is the month where the hill climb costs more sweat.

What November alone offers is the lowest rain total of the three months, 6.70 inches, with afternoons that still reach 62.6°F, a combination no December in this record produces.

The last word

Book two nights, keep them refundable, and put every outdoor hour before 4 pm: those three moves make a November in Braga work, and none of them costs money. Carry one more number up the hill. November spreads 6.70 inches over 12.9 wet days, about 0.52 inch apiece, against October’s 0.65, so the rain arrives here in smaller installments than the monthly totals suggest. And remember where the instrument stands, at 68.4 m in Merelim, north of the center: a sanctuary on a hilltop is not the same reading.
