Madeira in March: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and the New Trail Fee

Madeira gets sold as the island without a winter, and March is the month where that reputation meets a thermometer. At the Funchal station the average high is 69.1°F and the average low 57.7°F, with 2.45 inches of rain falling across 5.8 wet days. Sea level stays shirtsleeve warm. Go up into the mountains and the same afternoon turns cold and wet, which is the gap most first-time visitors pack straight into.

Something has changed more than the weather. Since January 1, 2026, every classified trail on the island, each PR-numbered levada and vereda, charges an access fee and takes bookings only online. The general rate is €4.50 per person, and the reservation passes through SIMplifica, the regional government’s digital services portal. Turning up at a trailhead with boots and good intentions no longer works, and March walkers meet that rule before they meet the rain.

A number that surprises people: the sea is not warming yet. March averages 66.9°F, below February’s 67.2°F, and April climbs to 68.0°F. Water lags air by weeks, so the month with the brighter mornings holds the cooler swim of the three. Both neighbors have their own page, February and April.

Madeira weather in March: average highs, lows and rain days

Those figures come from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, and from one specific instrument: station 522 in Funchal, on the south coast at 58 meters, averaged over 1991 to 2020. It is a real thermometer rather than a model grid cell smoothed across an island of cliffs. It also describes Funchal and nothing else. High ground runs colder and far wetter, the north coast keeps its own weather, and a reading taken beside the marina is a poor guide to the ridge at Pico Ruivo.

On rain days, 5.8 in an average March record at least 0.04 inch, and 2.2 of them record 0.39 inch or more. IPMA counts with its own thresholds, not the 0.10-inch line that US tables use, so the two counts are not interchangeable. In practice most March weeks carry a day or two when a shower crosses the south coast and clears within the hour, plus a couple across the month heavy enough to rewrite an afternoon.

The spread between 69.1°F and 57.7°F is 11.4 degrees, and altitude widens it. A day that starts warm at the harbor can finish with a cold wind at a viewpoint you reached by minibus. On March 15 the sun rises at 7:15 and sets at 7:16 in the evening, island time, for 12 hours and 1 minute of daylight. Twelve hours is the threshold the month crosses, and it is what puts a full walking day back on the table. Closing times lag behind it: Monte Palace Tropical Garden shuts at 18:00 from October through March, and its museum stops admitting at 17:00, both well before the light goes.

Can you swim in Madeira in March? The sea at 66.9°F

The sea off Madeira averages 66.9°F in March, from Open-Meteo’s marine record over 2015 to 2024. Read the small print with the number: it is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, which puts it a shade above a true 24-hour average. Treat 66.9°F as the top of the range on a sunny afternoon, not the temperature waiting for you at eight in the morning.

In the water that means a brisk swim rather than a lounging one. Anyone who swims off New England in June will recognize the first thirty seconds. Most visitors last ten or fifteen minutes without neoprene and come out pleased with themselves. A shorty wetsuit turns the same dip into an hour, and children tend to vote with their feet faster than adults do, which is worth knowing before you build a day around a sea pool.

Wind and swell we cannot put a number on. Our sources carry sea surface temperature for March, not wave height or gust data for the island’s coasts, and inventing a figure would help nobody. What the record does show is where the month sits between its neighbors: 66.9°F against 67.2°F in February and 68.0°F in April, the coolest water of the three.

How busy is Madeira in March? Crowds and the €2 city tax

On prices, our cards are on the table: nothing in the sourced material puts a verified number on March hotel rates in Funchal, and a made-up curve helps nobody. Portugal’s broad seasonal pattern lives on the best-time page, and the country-wide budget lines on what a trip costs. What March does carry is a set of documented charges, and they apply whatever your room costs.

Booking is where the month bites. Trail slots are sold in 30-minute increments running from sunrise to sunset, so on March 15 the window opens at 7:15 and closes at 19:16, and every reservation passes through SIMplifica, including walks taken with a tour company. Status moves trail by trail: on September 8, 2026 the PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada and the PR 4 Levada do Barreiro were restricted while PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes was open. Check when you book, then check again the week you fly.

Funchal charges a Taxa Municipal Turística of €2 per person per night, capped at 7 consecutive nights, so €14 a guest at most. It applies to every paid overnight stay in the municipality whatever the booking channel, and it starts again after an interrupted stay, which catches travelers who split a trip with a few nights elsewhere and come back. Children of 12 and under go free on production of an ID, as do visitors with a disability of 60 percent or more and residents of the region.

If one line deserves more money in March, it is the spare trail booking. At €4.50 a head, holding a second slot on a different day covers you against the 2.2 days that record 0.39 inch or more, and it costs less than lunch. The same arithmetic runs at Monte: €16 one way on the cable car plus €4.50 for the PR 3.1 walk down comes to €20.50, against €22 for the return ticket.

Things to do in Madeira in March

March hands you a working day: twelve hours of it on the 15th, against the clipped afternoons of midwinter, and the booking slots stretch to match since they run sunrise to sunset. It is not the month to plan around water at 66.9°F. It is the month the high routes come back into range for anyone who needs daylight at both ends of a drive, with PR 1 Vereda do Areeiro and PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo among those open as of September 8, 2026.

The Funchal to Monte cable car runs 08:45 to 17:45 every day of the year except Christmas Day, at €22 return or €16 one way, and its e-ticket stays valid for 60 days, so you can buy it at home. At the top station, Monte Palace Tropical Garden asks €18 for adults and keeps winter hours of 09:00 to 18:00 through March, with its sculpture museum closing at 17:00. The Carreiros do Monte wicker sledges cost €30 for one rider, €40 for two and €60 for three, Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 18:00, sold on site for the same day only.

Free in March, and worth planning around with children: the cable car carries under-7s at no charge and halves the fare from 7 to 14, Monte Palace admits children up to 14 with a paying adult, and the city tax exempts anyone 12 and under on production of an ID. The Botanical Garden Eng. Rui Vieira at Bom Sucesso, on Caminho do Meio, holds more than 2,000 exotic species. Its admission price does not appear in the material we checked, so we quote none.

Madeira in March: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Sunrise at 7:15 gives you coffee in the dark and the first cable car at 08:45, taken one way at €16. Monte Palace opens at 09:00, and a long circuit of its 70,000 square meters still clears the museum’s 17:00 cut-off with hours to spare. Book a late-morning slot on the PR 3.1 Caminho Real do Monte and walk down into Funchal for lunch. The whole afternoon then sits at sea level, with usable light until 19:16.

Day two goes up: an early booked slot on the PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes, with the short PR 6.1 Levada do Risco beside it, both open when we checked on September 8, 2026. If the weather turns, the fallbacks are already priced. The sledges refuse three-person rides in rain or on wet ground and do not run on Sundays, so a wet Sunday removes them twice over. Trail status shifts with weather and works and is published route by route, which is the thing to open over breakfast.

Madeira in March vs February and April

The three months sit within two degrees of each other on air temperature, and the difference shows up in the rain and the water instead. March takes 2.45 inches over 5.8 wet days at the 0.04-inch threshold, more wet days than February’s 5.5 and a full day more than April’s 4.7, while February collects the heaviest total at 2.85 inches. On the sea, March is the trough at 66.9°F, between 67.2°F in February and 68.0°F in April.

Shift four weeks forward and you gain the drier month: 1.78 inches of rain, 4.7 wet days, water at 68.0°F, and Monte Palace open until 19:00 from April 1. Shift four weeks back and February offers slightly warmer sea at 67.2°F with 0.40 inch more rain and shorter days at both ends. Is March a good time to visit Madeira?

Yes for walkers, clearly. Twelve hours of daylight, 69.1°F afternoons and the high PR routes back in play make this one of the better hiking months on the island, provided the slots are booked before you fly. No for a beach-led trip. At 66.9°F the sea asks for commitment or neoprene, and 2.2 days of real rain across the month will find at least one of your beach afternoons.

Should that second description fit, take April instead. It drops the rain to 1.78 inches over 4.7 days, lifts the sea to 68.0°F, and pushes Monte Palace’s closing time to 19:00 from the first of the month. Small in degrees, large in the number of afternoons that survive intact.

Within this trio, only March crosses twelve hours of daylight while the rain has already fallen 0.40 inch below February, which stretches the trail booking window from 7:15 to 19:16 on the 15th.

The last word

Book the trail slots first and the room second. On an island where every PR-numbered path now needs a time and a name, that order shapes the trip more than the forecast does. And one footnote worth €1.50 a head: walking with a tourism company that holds a protocol with the IFCN drops the access fee from €4.50 to €3, the rare case here where a guide pays for part of itself. Then take the 08:45 car up to Monte and let the twelve hours do their work.
