Madeira in October: Weather, Sea Temperature, Rain Days, Crowds, Prices and Levada Bookings

Madeira in October sits between two very different months at Funchal: a dry September and a November that cools the sea. Pick October and you keep most of the summer’s warmth in the water, lose a couple of degrees in the air, and trade September’s rare showers for a wet day or two each week. The cooler air suits walkers. The wet days matter most to anyone planning a three-person toboggan ride down from Monte.

Every Madeira walk in 2026 runs on a new rule. Since January 1, 2026, each classified trail, every PR-numbered levada and vereda, charges an access fee of EUR 4.50 per person and requires an online booking through SIMplifica, the regional government’s portal. Entry slots run every 30 minutes from sunrise to sunset, so October’s shorter days hold fewer slots than a June day.

Madeira weather in October: average highs, lows and rain days

The normals below come from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, and they are station readings: a real thermometer at station 522 in Funchal, 58 meters up on the south coast, averaged over 1991 to 2020. October there runs an average high of 77.4°F, an average low of 66.6°F and 3.59 inches of rain. Every figure here describes that coastal station and nothing more. High ground on the island is colder and far wetter, and the far end of a coast keeps its own weather, so check a mountain forecast before you pack for a trail.

IPMA counts 7.0 days in an average October with at least 1 mm of rain (0.04 inch), and 3.0 days with 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more. In travel terms, a little under one day in four gets wet enough to measure, and about three days in the month bring a proper soaking. Those thresholds are the Portuguese service’s own, lower than the 0.10-inch cutoff US tables use, so the counts do not line up with American figures. On a wet morning in Monte, no three-person sledge ride runs, and the ticket office can close early.

Between the 77.4°F afternoon and the 66.6°F night sits a gap of 10.8°F, enough to want a light sweater at an outdoor dinner in Funchal. Head above the coast and you need more: PR1 starts at Pico do Areeiro, 1,857 meters up, far from the station that produced these readings. Add a waterproof shell to the bag, since three October days reach 10 mm of rain or more at sea level. Our Portugal packing list covers the rest.

On October 15 Madeira gets about 11 hours 25 minutes of daylight. Sunrise comes at 07:10 UTC and sunset at 18:35 UTC, or 08:10 and 19:35 on island clocks that day. Cut into 30-minute trail slots, that span holds roughly 22 entry times per trail. Several timetables end before dark: the Funchal-Monte cable car stops at 17:45, and the Monte Palace Tropical Garden closes at 18:00 from October. The Cabo Girão skywalk stays open until 20:00 through October, so you can stand on its glass floor at sunset.

Can you swim in Madeira in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Open-Meteo’s marine data puts the sea surface off Madeira at an average of 75.6°F in October, over 2015 to 2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average of the same water. Tables built on round-the-clock means may quote a slightly lower October figure, and both can describe the same sea correctly.

In practice, 75.6°F water sits just under the 77.4°F afternoon air, so a midday swim starts without a shock. After dark the order flips, with the 66.6°F night cooler than the sea. At Porto Moniz on the north coast, the serviced volcanic pools cost EUR 3 and include changing rooms, a children’s pool, a bar and a first-aid post, open 09:00 to 19:00 in summer and 09:00 to 17:00 in winter. We could not confirm which timetable covers October, so arrive before 17:00. The Cachalote pools next door are free and open at all hours.

Our sources carry no wind or swell series for October, so we give no sea-state figure and promise no calm water. Funchal logs 3.0 days of 10 mm of rain or more in the month, a sign of unsettled spells, though rain and swell are separate measurements. Check the local forecast and the lifeguard flags on the day, and keep 112, the emergency number across Madeira, in your phone.

How busy is Madeira in October? Crowds and prices

We found no hotel-occupancy or room-rate series for Madeira, so we rank no month as cheap or expensive. Ship traffic we could read. In its 2026 counts, charted alongside 2025, the port authority APRAM logged 113,210 cruise passengers in Funchal in January and 113,839 in February, against 4,071 in July, with 44 ship calls in February and 3 in July. Its published charts stop at August, so October’s count is one we could not read. The winter-heavy shape holds in both years.

Booking in October follows the same rules as the rest of 2026. Levada entries must be reserved online through SIMplifica in 30-minute slots, for solo walkers, groups and guided walkers alike. The cable car’s e-ticket stays valid for 60 days after purchase, so you can buy it before you fly. Blandy’s Wine Lodge advises booking tours ahead and allows free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The Monte sledges cannot be booked at all: tickets are sold on site, for the same day only.

Funchal adds a Taxa Municipal Turística of EUR 2 per person per night, capped at seven consecutive nights: EUR 14 per guest at most, or EUR 28 for a couple on a week-long stay. It applies to every paid overnight stay in the municipality of Funchal, whatever the booking site, and the count starts again after an interrupted stay. Children 12 and under are exempt on showing ID, as are people with a disability of 60 percent or more and residents of the Autonomous Region of Madeira.

The one upgrade that changes an October trip is on the trail. PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, the crossing from Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo, costs EUR 10.50 for anyone over 12, against EUR 4.50 for the out-and-back to the Pedra Rija viewpoint. The extra EUR 6 pays for the full 6.1 km, about three hours rated Moderate. PR1 is excluded from the EUR 9 day pass and priced on its own. With sunset at 19:35 on October 15, a morning slot leaves daylight to spare.

Things to do in Madeira in October

Compared with September, October keeps the sea within half a degree, at 75.6°F against 76.1°F, while the Funchal afternoon high drops 2.5°F to 77.4°F. That pairing suits a vacation day that mixes a levada walk with a swim. November cannot match it on the water: the sea falls to 73.0°F, 2.6°F below October.

In Funchal, the cable car to Monte costs EUR 22 return or EUR 16 one way and runs 08:45 to 17:45 daily. At its top station, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden covers 70,000 square meters (about 17 acres) of exotic planting, tile panels and a sculpture museum, for EUR 18 per adult. Back in town, Blandy’s Wine Lodge on Avenida Arriaga runs a 45-minute Premium Tour for EUR 23, ending with three Madeira wines. West of the city, the Cabo Girão skywalk, a glass platform on the sea cliff, costs EUR 3, a price to confirm on site.

From October the Monte Palace garden closes at 18:00 instead of 19:00, while its museum keeps its 17:00 close all year. Cabo Girão holds its 20:00 closing through October and drops to 19:00 in November. The wicker sledges from Monte, EUR 30 for one person, EUR 40 for two and EUR 60 for three, run Monday to Saturday from 09:00 to 18:00, and no three-person ride leaves in rain or on wet ground. With 7.0 wet days in an average October, keep a second day open for the toboggan.

For adults, the free entry is the Cachalote pools at Porto Moniz, open at all hours. Families save more: children up to 14 enter Monte Palace free with an adult, children up to 6 ride the cable car free and ages 7 to 14 pay half, and children 12 and under pay nothing at Cabo Girão or on PR1.

Madeira in October: a two-day itinerary

Day one, on a weekday: take the first cable car at 08:45 and reach Monte Palace for its 09:00 opening, leaving time for the museum before its 17:00 close. Ride a sledge down (EUR 30 solo, EUR 40 for two) if the ground is dry, then lunch near the Mercado dos Lavradores, open until 19:00 Monday to Friday and only until 14:00 on Saturday. Join Blandy’s 16:00 English tour, out by 16:45, then head west to Cabo Girão for the 19:35 sunset, with the skywalk open until 20:00.

Day two starts on the mountain. Book a PR1 slot close to the 08:10 sunrise on SIMplifica, walk the 6.1 km to Pico Ruivo in about three hours, and arrange a ride back from the far end before you set out: past Pedra Rija the path runs one way only. PR1 was listed open on September 8, 2026, but trail status changes with weather and works and is published trail by trail. If rain sets in, high ground gets the worst of it, so swap the crossing for Funchal’s Botanical Garden and its more than 2,000 exotic species.

Madeira in October vs September and November

On IPMA’s Funchal normals, October runs 2.5°F cooler than September by day and 4.4°F warmer than November. Rain moves most: September’s 0.91 inch climbs to 3.59 inches in October, nearly four times as much, and wet days go from 3.1 to 7.0. November comes in slightly drier by volume at 3.16 inches but wetter by count, with 7.3 days. At sea, Open-Meteo’s daily-maximum averages slip from 76.1°F to 75.6°F, then fall to 73.0°F.

Go four weeks earlier, into Madeira in September, and you get drier days, 2.5°F more warmth, half a degree more sea and Monte Palace open until 19:00. Go four weeks later, into Madeira in November, and you lose 2.6°F of sea and 4.4°F of afternoon warmth, nights drop to 62.6°F, and Cabo Girão closes at 19:00. Trail fees, the cable car fare and Funchal’s EUR 2 nightly tax stay the same across all three months.

Is October a good time to visit Madeira?

Yes, for walkers who prefer 77.4°F afternoons to September’s 79.9°F, and for swimmers happy in a 75.6°F sea. No, for anyone whose trip depends on dry weather: a little under one day in four brings measurable rain at Funchal, and the mountains get more. Families set on the three-person sledge should plan two chances at it, since wet ground cancels that ride.

Book the PR1 slot the day your dates are fixed, then build the rest of the week around that mountain morning, with a spare dry day for the sledges. Plan the landing too. The Aerobus leaves the airport between 08:30 and 22:00 and takes 50 minutes to Praia Formosa, running through the center of Funchal, and stop 9, Terminal SAM, is marked disabled on the official timetable.
