October is the month Madeira’s numbers start to move. The IPMA thermometer in Funchal still reads an average high of 77.4°F, the water off the south coast still averages 75.6°F, and then the rain shows up: 3.59 inches for the month against 0.91 inch in September. Nothing on the island closes. What changes is the chance that the afternoon you set aside for a mountain trail arrives with cloud sitting on it.
There is also a rule that did not exist a year ago. Since January 1, 2026, every classified walking trail in Madeira, each PR-numbered levada and vereda, charges €4.50 per person and requires a booking made online through SIMplifica, the regional government’s portal. Entry comes in 30-minute slots running from sunrise to sunset, and October hands you 11 hours 25 minutes of daylight on the 15th to fit them into.

One caution before the numbers. They belong to a single thermometer on a single coast: IPMA station 522, at 58 m in Funchal, on the south side. High ground and the north run colder and far wetter, and packing for a summit path from a coastal reading is how people end up shivering at the top of a levada. An average high of 77.4°F, an average low of 66.6°F, 3.59 inches of rain across the month. Those figures are the 1991–2020 normals for IPMA station 522, and the national weather service measures them with an instrument at 58 m in Funchal rather than pulling them from a reanalysis grid cell, which matters here: a grid cell would blend this coast with the ridge behind it and split the difference. Against September’s 79.9°F, the coastal air gives up 2.5°F.
Seven days in an average October record at least 0.04 inch of rain, and 3.0 days record 0.39 inch or more. Those are IPMA’s own thresholds, not the 0.10-inch line American tables use, so the counts do not swap across sources. In practice the month reads as roughly three dry weeks with three genuinely wet days scattered through it, plus four days where something falls and stops.
The day-to-night spread is 10.8°F on the coast, which is small enough that one shell and one mid-layer cover the whole trip. Above Funchal the gap widens and the temperature drops with every hundred meters, so the bag that works for a harbor evening at 66.6°F does not work for a ridge walk. Pack the trail clothes as a separate set, not as an afterthought to the beach set.
On October 15 the sun rises at 08:10 and sets at 19:35 local time, giving 11 hours 25 minutes of daylight. Since trail entry slots run only between sunrise and sunset, that window is also the booking window, and it shrinks a little every week of the month. A late-afternoon start on a long levada finishes in the dark, which is a poor place to meet a tunnel.
Can you swim in Madeira in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea surface off Madeira averages 75.6°F in October, from the Open-Meteo Marine record over 2015 to 2024. Read the small print on that number: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it sits a shade above what a 24-hour average would show. A swim at eight in the morning reads below the headline, an afternoon dip reads at it or a touch above.
At that temperature most people get in without a wetsuit and stay in, which is the practical difference October still buys. Compare the neighbors from the same series: September holds 76.1°F, half a degree warmer, and November has fallen to 73.0°F, a 2.6°F drop that turns a long swim into a short one for anyone who feels the cold.
On wind and swell we have nothing verified to give you. No official October wave or wind normal for the island turned up in our checks, so no figure appears here. What is published is trail status, path by path, and it moves with weather and works: on September 8, 2026, PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada and PR 4 Levada do Barreiro were both restricted while five other classified paths were open.
How busy is Madeira in October? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
Where Madeira’s room rates sit in the annual cycle is the one thing we cannot put a number on: no official monthly rate series for the island came out of our checks, and inventing a curve would be worse than admitting the gap. The booking that actually binds in October is the trail slot. It can only be made online, through SIMplifica, and it applies the same way to a solo walker, to a group and to anyone walking with a tourism company. Slots come in 30-minute steps between sunrise and sunset, so 11 hours 25 minutes of daylight yields far fewer of them than a June day does. Choose the morning before you fly, then build the day around it.
Funchal charges a Taxa Municipal Turística of €2 per person per night, capped at seven consecutive nights, which puts the ceiling at €14 per guest. It applies to every paid overnight stay in the municipality whatever the booking channel, and it starts again after an interrupted stay, so two nights up the coast reset the counter. Children of 12 and under are exempt on production of an ID, as are visitors with a disability of 60 percent or more and residents of the region on proof of tax address.
One choice changes October more than any room upgrade: which coast you sleep on. The 77.4°F and the 3.59 inches above are a Funchal reading at 58 m on the south side. Higher ground and the north coast run colder and considerably wetter, and a wet week there bears little relation to a wet week in town. Things to do in Madeira in October
October stacks two things the calendar rarely offers together: mountain paths cool enough to walk through the middle of the day, and a sea still averaging 75.6°F when you come back down. September’s water is half a degree warmer but its coastal air runs 79.9°F, and by November the sea is at 73.0°F. The price of the pairing is rain, three days of 0.39 inch or more, and a trail list whose status can change the week you land.
The fixed points, with their October hours. The Funchal to Monte cable car runs 08:45 to 17:45 daily except Christmas Day, €22 return and €16 one way, free to age 6 and half price from 7 to 14. At the top station, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden switches to its winter timetable in October and closes at 18:00 instead of 19:00, with the sculpture museum inside shutting at 17:00 and last entry at 17:00; adults €18, and the grounds run to 70,000 square meters.
Costing nothing this month: children up to 14 enter Monte Palace free with an adult, school groups too, children up to 6 ride the cable car free, and under-13s are outside the €2 nightly tax. Trail fees are waived only for residents of the region. The Botanical Garden Eng. Rui Vieira, on Caminho do Meio at Bom Sucesso, holds more than 2,000 exotic species, and no official page confirmed its current admission when we checked, so we quote none.
Madeira in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one, Monte. Sunrise on the 15th is 08:10, so there is no case for being out earlier. Ride the 08:45 cable car up, €22 return, and be at the Monte Palace gate when it opens at 09:00: the museum in the grounds closes at 17:00, the garden at 18:00 from October. Come back down by wicker sledge if the ground is dry, €40 for two, tickets sold on site and for the same day only. That leaves the warm hours, a high near 77.4°F, for water at 75.6°F, with light until 19:35.
Day two, a trail booked before you flew. PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes and PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo were both open on September 8, 2026, at €4.50 a head on a 30-minute entry slot; take an early one. If the weather turns, and three days a month it turns properly, the carreiros refuse a three-person sledge on wet ground and can shut the office early, so the hours go indoors instead: the Monte museum before 17:00, or the 2,000 species at Bom Sucesso.

Across the three months the temperature slides and the rain jumps. Air on the coast falls 2.5°F from September to October and another 4.4°F into November. The sea gives up half a degree, then 2.6°F more. Rainfall behaves differently: 0.91 inch becomes 3.59 inches in four weeks, and wet days go from 3.1 to 7.0 before flattening at 7.3 in November. All five rows come from the same IPMA station and the same marine series as the October figures.
Shift back four weeks and you buy the dry sky, paying in coastal heat at 79.9°F and a longer day that fills trail slots faster. Shift forward and the fees, hours and tax all hold while the sea drops to 73.0°F and the wet days edge up. Both neighbors are written up in full: Madeira in September and Madeira in November.
Is October a good time to visit Madeira?
Yes for walkers, and for anyone who wants a swim and a mountain in the same day. Seven wet days out of 31 still leave roughly three dry weeks, the water is above 75°F, and the classified paths are open on a fee and a time slot. The answer turns to no for a non-refundable beach fortnight, and for a trip that hangs on one named trail on one named afternoon.
When a dry sky outranks everything else, book September instead: 0.91 inch against 3.59 inches, 3.1 wet days against 7.0, and a sea within half a degree of October’s. You pay for it in coastal heat, an average high of 79.9°F, and in a longer day that leaves fewer free entry slots on the popular levadas.
Of these three months, only October puts a 75.6°F sea, nights around 66.6°F that sleep without air conditioning, and 11 hours 25 minutes of daylight into the same week.
The last word
Book the trail slot first and let everything else arrange itself around it, because it is the only part of a Madeira October with a fixed number of places. Then buy the cable car e-ticket before you fly: it stays valid for 60 days from purchase, so nothing is lost if the mountain is under cloud on your Tuesday. And if you walk with a tourism company that holds a protocol with the IFCN, the trail fee drops from €4.50 to €3, which is the cheapest sentence anyone will write about Madeira this year.
