ÓBIDOS · MAY · WESTERN PORTUGAL
The walls come first. You climb at a gate, the whitewashed town drops away under you, and the rooftops run off toward open country in every direction. In May that climb happens under 14 hours and 24 minutes of daylight, with afternoons averaging 64.8°F and mornings starting at 57.7°F, cool enough that the stone is still cold at seven.
What the date buys you is a middle position. April soaks the countryside green over 7.7 wet days, June dries out to less than half an inch of rain, and May takes 1.41 inches across 5.4 days while the evenings stretch toward nine o’clock. It is the last month before the summer coach season in which the ramparts, the lanes and the lagoon all fit comfortably into one day.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · ÓBIDOS IN MAY
May gives Óbidos 64.8°F afternoons, 5.4 wet days and light until 8:46 p.m., which is enough for the ramparts at dawn and the lagoon after lunch, with a jacket for the 57.7°F mornings.
AVG HIGH 64.8°F · 5.4 WET DAYS · SUNSET 8:46 P.M. ON MAY 15
Go for: the wall circuit before the day trips arrive, evenings that stay lit past half past eight, and April’s green countryside with two fewer wet days.
Think twice before: booking on a swimming promise. We found no verified sea-temperature series for this coast, and May mornings start at 57.7°F.

If the question is the town itself, the walls, the lanes and the way in from Lisbon, our Óbidos guide covers it. The date is what changes below: 64.8°F afternoons, 5.4 wet days and light until 8:46 p.m., set against April’s 7.7 wet days and June’s 0.48 inch of rain.

Every figure here comes from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, and from one instrument: station 531 at Cabo Carvoeiro, on the Peniche headland, 32.0 meters above the sea, with a 1991-2020 record. That is a real thermometer, not a model grid cell. It also stands on the open coast while Óbidos sits slightly inland behind its walls, so read the normals below as a coastal reading. The higher ground away from the shore runs colder and considerably wetter, and no station in this record speaks for it.
Rain reaches the gauge on 5.4 days in an average May, roughly one day in six, and IPMA counts a day as wet from 0.04 inch upward. American tables usually start counting at 0.10 inch, so the two sets of rain-day figures cannot be compared straight across. On the ground it means a shower you sit out under an awning on Rua Direita rather than a canceled afternoon: the entire month totals 1.41 inches.
The gap between afternoon and dawn runs 7.1°F, a narrow spread that calls for one layer rather than three. A fleece or a light jacket covers the seven o’clock wall circuit, shirtsleeves do the rest of the day. Atlantic wind moves the felt temperature more than the thermometer does, which is the argument for a windbreaker over a sweater. Our Portugal packing guide has the full list.
May 15 brings 14 hours and 24 minutes of daylight, the sun up at 6:21 a.m. and down at 8:46 p.m. local time (sunrise-sunset.org, converted from 05:21 and 19:46 UTC). Dinner begins in daylight. So does a second lap of the ramparts, and so does the drive back to Lisbon if Óbidos turns out to be a day out rather than a night.
How warm is Óbidos in May?
Put a number on warm and May comes out mild rather than hot: 64.8°F is the average afternoon, 57.7°F the average pre-dawn low, 7.1 degrees apart. Those are means built from thirty Mays, not a forecast for yours. The record holds shirtsleeve weeks and gray ones inside the same average, and a monthly normal will never tell you which one you drew.
In practice that shapes a day rather than a wardrobe. Mornings on the walls want a jacket and something on your legs, because the rampart walk is exposed on all sides. By two o’clock the same walk is done in a shirt, and the shaded lanes below the castle stay several degrees cooler than the open stone. When the sun drops at 8:46 p.m., the jacket comes back out for dinner.
Frost plays no part in a May here: the average low sits almost 26 degrees above freezing, and we could not obtain a frost-day count for this station, so we give none. We also found no sea-surface temperature series for this stretch of coast, so no water figure appears anywhere. Where such tables do exist, their monthly value is generally an average of daily maxima, a little warmer than a true 24-hour mean, and worth checking before anyone packs for swimming at Foz do Arelho.
How busy is Óbidos in May? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
Óbidos runs on day trips. Coaches and rental cars from Lisbon land mid-morning, the lanes inside Porta da Vila fill for a few hours, and by late afternoon the town hands itself back. What we cannot do is rank May against the other eleven months on cost: we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for the town, so we crown no month cheap and none expensive. The measured curve is the weather one, and May sits between April’s 1.88 inches of rain and June’s 0.48.
Beds inside the walls are few, and a Saturday commits faster than a Tuesday. Lock the night inside the gate as soon as your dates are firm, and keep the countryside guesthouses as the fallback rather than the plan. Our where to stay in Portugal guide sorts the regions and what a Portugal trip costs handles the budget line. Neither carries an Óbidos rate for May, because we have not verified one.
Portuguese municipalities are allowed to levy a per-person overnight tourist tax, and the rate is set town by town. We could not verify whether Óbidos applies one, or at what amount, so no percentage and no euro figure appear. Ask at check-in and expect it as a separate line from the room rate, as our know before you go notes explain.
The upgrade that changes the month is the address rather than the room. Sleeping inside the walls buys the two windows the day trips never see: the ramparts at 6:21 a.m. with the town to yourself, and Rua Direita after the last coach has gone, still lit at half past eight. The castle at the top of the hill holds a pousada and the lanes below it hold small guesthouses. We verified no rates for either.
Things to do in Óbidos in May

May is the month in which the walking and the water stop competing for the same day. April gives up 7.7 wet days, June only 2.2, and May’s 5.4 splits the difference while daylight has already stretched to 14 hours and 24 minutes. One day can therefore hold a full circuit of the ramparts at dawn, a long lunch, and the lagoon in the afternoon, without anybody running out of light on the drive back.
The wall circuit is the headline: an almost unbroken ring of medieval rampart above the rooftops, reached from beside Porta da Vila and from the castle end. Rua Direita runs gate to castle between houses trimmed in yellow and blue, passing Igreja de Santa Maria on its small square. Outside the walls the aqueduct arches march off toward Usseira, and northwest of town the Lagoa de Óbidos opens to the Atlantic at Foz do Arelho. We verified no opening hours and no ticket prices for the castle or the churches, so none are quoted.
Lagoon water pays no attention to the calendar, but the air does, and that is where the season lives. At 64.8°F the sand at Foz do Arelho is somewhere to sit and eat rather than somewhere to swim, while the same figure makes a full lap of the ramparts comfortable at any hour of the afternoon. Wet stone changes the rampart walk more than temperature ever does, since long stretches of the walk are narrow and without railings.
Walking the walls costs nothing, and neither does the best hour on them. The lanes, the square in front of Igreja de Santa Maria and the aqueduct road are free as well. We found no verified event dates for Óbidos in May, so no festival is listed here: check the municipality’s own calendar before building a weekend around one.
Óbidos in May: a two-day itinerary
Day one, for anyone who slept inside the gate: on the walls before seven, when the light is low and the stone still cold from a 57.7°F night, then coffee on Rua Direita as the first shutters open. Mid-morning belongs to the arriving day trips, so spend it on Igreja de Santa Maria and the side lanes. Lunch slowly. At two, with the air at its warmest, head out to the Lagoa de Óbidos and Foz do Arelho. Back through Porta da Vila for dinner, with sunset at 8:46 p.m. still ahead of you.
Day two goes outward: the aqueduct road, the farmland east of the walls, or the coast north toward Nazaré. If the morning turns wet, and on 5.4 days a month it will, flip the order. The bookshops and churches of the old town absorb an hour or two indoors, lunch runs long, and the ramparts keep until the afternoon clears, because a squall on an unrailed wall walk is nobody’s idea of a holiday.
Óbidos in May vs April and June
| Measure | April | May | June |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 61.9°F | 64.8°F | 67.6°F |
| Average low | 54.5°F | 57.7°F | 61.2°F |
| Precipitation | 1.88 in | 1.41 in | 0.48 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 7.7 | 5.4 | 2.2 |
Across the three months the thermometer climbs 5.7 degrees, from 61.9°F in April to 67.6°F in June, with May almost exactly in the middle. Rainfall moves faster than heat does: 1.88 inches in April, 1.41 in May, 0.48 in June, and the wet-day count falls from 7.7 to 5.4 to 2.2.
Shift four weeks earlier and you gain the greenest countryside of the year along with one extra wet day in every four. Shift four weeks later and June hands you nights at 61.2°F and a month that barely rains, at the cost of the spring color and of any illusion that the town will be quiet. Both neighbors have their own page: Óbidos in April and Óbidos in June.
Is May a good time to visit Óbidos?
Yes for walkers, photographers and anyone who wants the ramparts without planning around heat: 64.8°F afternoons and 14 hours of light do that job well. No for a beach week. This is the open Atlantic, mornings start under 58°F, and we have no water temperature to offer as reassurance, which makes the lagoon a place for a picnic rather than a swim.
If the answer is no, June is the correction, and it is a small one. Rain falls to 0.48 inch across 2.2 days, afternoons reach 67.6°F and nights hold at 61.2°F, so a two-day plan stops depending on the sky. You trade away the green that April’s 1.88 inches leaves behind, and you accept a busier town, but you buy near certainty on the weather. Our best time to visit Portugal page puts the whole year in order.
What May alone offers is the overlap: nearly June’s daylight, April’s countryside still green, and a wet-day count low enough that one bad morning does not sink a two-day visit.
The last word
Book the bed inside the gate. That single choice does more for a May visit than any schedule, because the rampart walk at 6:21 a.m. belongs to whoever slept up there, and it costs nothing. One last figure worth packing for: 1.3 days in an average May drop 0.39 inch or more, about one day in twenty-four, so a proper rain shell deserves the space even in a month whose entire total is 1.41 inches.
