Cascais in June: Weather, Rain Days, Crowds and a Two-Day Plan

Cascais spends most of the year as a seaside suburb of Lisbon, and somewhere in June it turns back into a resort. The 1991-2020 normals give the month an average high of 79.0°F, an average low of 61.7°F and 0.53 inches of rain across roughly two wet days. On the 15th the sun sets at 21:04 local time, which leaves enough light after dinner for the full length of the seafront promenade at a walking pace.

That mix is what gets June booked: dry pavement, 14 hours 55 minutes of daylight, afternoons warm enough to plan a whole day around. What the month costs you is below, along with the case for shifting your vacation four weeks in either direction, toward May or July.

June buys 79.0°F afternoons, only 2.0 rainy days and sunset at 21:04, and it does all that without July’s 82.9°F.

Go for: long coastal walking days, dry cliff paths, a beach afternoon and an evening out on the same date.

Think twice before: booking on a sea temperature, since we could not verify one for Cascais, or packing for airport normals when the Guincho side runs cooler and windier.

Every figure here comes from IPMA, Portugal’s national sea and atmosphere institute, and from one real thermometer rather than a model grid cell: station 579, Lisboa Gago Coutinho, 103.9 m above sea level. That station sits inland at Lisbon’s airport. Cascais faces the open Atlantic and runs cooler and windier than it, and the high ground behind the coast is colder and far wetter again, so do not pack for a serra trail on a coastal reading.

IPMA’s 1991-2020 June normals for station 579 run 79.0°F by day and 61.7°F at night, with 0.53 inches of rain for the entire month. That is a genuine measurement series, not a reanalysis, and it matters because the two disagree by degrees rather than decimals. Read the highs as a ceiling for the coast rather than a promise: the thermometer is 104 m up and several miles from the surf, and the sea breeze at Cascais takes something off every afternoon figure in the column.

Two days in an average June record at least 0.04 inch of rain, and 0.4 day reaches 0.39 inch or more. Those are IPMA’s own thresholds, 1 mm and 10 mm, not the 0.10-inch line most American tables use, so the two sets of counts do not swap. Translated into a week on the coast: plan every morning as dry, and treat a soaking as the exception that turns up in roughly two Junes out of five.

Seventeen point three degrees separate the 79.0°F afternoon from the 61.7°F dawn, and wind off the dunes widens the felt gap further. Pack a light shell and one long-sleeved layer for after sunset, something with a hood if the cliff paths are on your list, and keep the shorts for midday. Our Portugal packing guide has the rest of the list.

June 15 brings 14 hours 55 minutes of daylight. Sunrise falls at 05:09 UTC and sunset at 20:04 UTC, and Portugal runs one hour ahead of UTC in summer, so the clock in your room says 06:09 and 21:04. Light like that is enough for a beach afternoon and an evening walk on the same date without hurrying either, and it is the reason dinner here starts later than most Americans expect.

How warm is Cascais in June?

June’s normals run from 79.0°F (26.1°C) in the afternoon down to 61.7°F (16.5°C) before dawn, a spread of 17.3°F on an average day. By American beach standards that is a mild month, warm enough to sit out an afternoon and never hot enough to drive you indoors. The Atlantic is the one number missing: we could not verify a sea-temperature series for Cascais, so we give no water figure, and where such tables do exist they usually average daily maxima, which reads warmer than a 24-hour mean.

In practice the day has two wardrobes. Before 10:00 you want trousers and sleeves, especially with wind coming off the Guincho dunes. By 14:00 the same day runs in shorts on the sand. Dress for the 61.7°F end, carry the 79.0°F end in a bag, and expect the shoreline to feel cooler than the inland station that produced these normals.

Frost plays no part in a Cascais June. We could not read a daily-minima series, so we count no nights below freezing, and the monthly low normal of 61.7°F sits 29.7°F clear of the freezing mark. The cold worth preparing for comes from wind on an exposed cliff path once the sun has gone.

How busy is Cascais in June? Crowds, room rates and booking lead time

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Cascais, so we crown no month expensive and quote no nightly figure. What is datable is the weather behind the demand: rain drops from May’s 2.00 inches to 0.53, and rain days from 5.7 to 2.0, which is the point at which the coast stops being a gamble for everyone looking at the same normals. Country-wide budget tiers live in our Portugal trip cost guide.

On lead time we have no booking-window study for the town, so we give no number of weeks. The structure of the place still guides the order of operations: Cascais sits at the end of a commuter rail line from Lisbon, its room stock is small beside the capital’s, and if your dates include a weekend those are the scarce nights. Lock lodging first, then flights, using our flights guide for the transatlantic side and where to stay for the shortlist.

We could not verify a municipal lodging-tax rate for Cascais, so we give no percentage and no per-night amount. Ask the property directly when you book whether anything is added at check-in, and keep it as a separate line from the room price in your budget. Paperwork and practicalities sit in our know-before-you-go guide.

If one line of the budget deserves an upgrade in June, make it the car. The Sintra-Cascais Natural Park spreads across 14,583 hectares in two municipalities, and its best June hours are scattered through it: the lapies coast north of Cabo Raso, the Guincho dunes, the climb toward Pedra Amarela. A rental compresses those into one morning, as our car guide explains. A sea-view terrace is a preference, and the 21:04 sunset costs nothing from any stretch of the promenade.

June is the month when the coast path and the beach stop competing for the same date. With 79.0°F afternoons, 2.0 rain days and light until 21:04, one day comfortably holds a morning in the serra and an afternoon on the sand. May rarely allows it, at 5.7 rain days, and July’s 82.9°F makes the climbing half of that plan considerably less pleasant.

The Sintra-Cascais Natural Park covers 14,583 hectares across the municipalities of Sintra and Cascais, a sensitive stretch held under heavy human pressure. North of Cabo Raso the shoreline carries a rare karst relief of coastal lapies, and the Guincho-Oitavos dune system holds the habitats that survive on it. Behind the shore the serra rises to Pedra Amarela at 406 m, about 1,332 feet.

The rock has been there for geological ages and the boundaries since 1994. June changes the air above them: 79.0°F instead of May’s 73.0°F, and 0.53 inch of rain instead of 2.00, the difference between a dry path over the dunes and a slick one. Two raptors nest inside the park, the peregrine falcon and Bonelli’s eagle, so whatever binoculars you already own are worth the suitcase space.

We could not verify an entry price or an opening hour for the park, the beaches or the coast path, so we quote none and suggest you plan around daylight rather than a timetable. The same protected area grows Colares wine, which keeps its international name, along with fruit varieties of its own: the Colares reinette apple, the rose peach, the thick-skinned lemon, the pearl pear. Ask for them by name at a market counter.

Cascais in June: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts early because June lets it. Sunrise is 06:09, so be walking by 07:30 while the air sits near its 61.7°F end, out toward Cabo Raso and the lapies coast north of it. Move to Guincho for the middle of the day, when the normals reach 79.0°F and the wind is the only thing to negotiate. Back in town by late afternoon, keep the promenade for the hour before the 21:04 sunset, and book dinner for after it.

Day two goes uphill, into the serra behind the coast and as far as your legs want toward Pedra Amarela at 406 m, with the remnant oak forest along the way. If yours is the one day in fifteen that records measurable rain, take the train into Lisbon instead and spend the wet hours in museums, since 0.4 day a month reaches 0.39 inch and the heavy stuff rarely lasts a full afternoon. Getting around Portugal covers the tickets.

Cascais in June vs May and July

Measure May June July
Average high 73.0°F 79.0°F 82.9°F
Average low 57.4°F 61.7°F 64.4°F
Precipitation 2.00 in 0.53 in 0.11 in
Days at 0.04 in or more 5.7 2.0 0.4

June runs 6.0°F warmer by day than May and 3.9°F cooler than July, with nights 4.3°F above May’s and 2.7°F below July’s. Rainfall is the sharper break: 0.53 inch against May’s 2.00, barely a quarter of it, and 2.0 wet days against 5.7. Going the other way, July is drier still at 0.11 inch and 0.4 day. No sea-temperature series was verifiable for any of the three months, so the water gets no row.

Shift four weeks back to May and you gain a quieter coast and 73.0°F walking weather, at the price of nearly three times the rain days. Shift four weeks forward to July and you gain near-certain sun, then hand back the comfort of a 79.0°F afternoon on an exposed climb. Our country-wide month verdicts put the same choice in a national frame.

Is June a good time to visit Cascais?

Yes, for anyone whose trip has a walking half and a beach half. Two rain days, 79.0°F afternoons and nearly 15 hours of light between them cover both, and a family splitting the day between sand and the park rarely loses an hour to weather. No, if you want a beach week with the towel out from breakfast to dusk and no wind in it, because the Cascais coast is windier than the station reading suggests and we have no water temperature to reassure you with.

If the answer is no, July is the month to shift to: 0.11 inch of rain, 0.4 wet day, 82.9°F afternoons, and the surest sun of the three. Shift the other way to May only if the crowd matters more than the sky, because 5.7 rain days in a one-week vacation is a real chance of losing two of them.

What no other month gives is this pairing: the longest days of the year, 14 hours 55 minutes of them on the 15th, arriving in a month that has already dried out to 0.53 inch.

The last word

Book the weekend nights first, decide on the car second, and give one June morning to the park instead of the promenade, because the promenade is still there at 21:04. The ground you walk out there has been protected since Decree-Law 292/81 of 15 October 1981, reclassified as a natural park by Regulatory Decree 8/94 on 11 March 1994, with its management plan signed the same day. Remnant oak forest hangs on in its least accessible corners, holly included, a short train ride from a European capital.
