October hands the Azores over to a quieter, wetter version of themselves. At Ponta Delgada the average high settles at 72.7°F, the average low at 62.8°F, and the sea offshore still reads 72.3°F, warmer than most Americans expect of the mid-Atlantic in fall. The bill arrives as rain: 4.65 inches across the month, spread over 13.7 days.

Moving from September to October costs 4.3°F of daytime air and 3.0°F of sea water, and adds 4.3 rain days. Which way that trade runs depends on what you came for: swimming and boats argue for the earlier month, while waterfalls, thermal water and a half-empty road argue for this one. Every climate figure here comes from one thermometer: IPMA’s station 513 at the Ponta Delgada Observatório, on the south coast of São Miguel. It does not describe the whole archipelago. High ground runs colder and far wetter, and the far end of the same coast keeps its own sky, so a mountain trail packed for a coastal reading is a mistake that arrives around noon.

Azores weather in October: average highs, lows and rain days

Those normals cover 1991 to 2020 and come from a real instrument 35.0 meters above the sea, not from a reanalysis grid cell averaged over a slab of ocean. The distinction earns its keep on an island. A high of 72.7°F and a low of 62.8°F are what one machine in Ponta Delgada recorded, decade after decade, at one point on one coast.

The rain count is metric and needs translating. Thirteen point seven days in an average October record at least 1 mm, which is 0.04 inch: enough to wet a windshield, not enough to cancel a lookout. Only 3.5 days reach 10 mm, or 0.39 inch, the kind of rain that clears the parking lot. US monthly tables usually count days above 0.10 inch, so 13.7 is not interchangeable with the number your weather app shows.

Between the 72.7°F high and the 62.8°F low sits a ten-degree day, which asks less of a suitcase than the wet does. A breathable rain shell earns its space when 13.7 days out of 31 record rain, and one warm layer covers the hour after sunset. On October 15 the sun rises at 07:50 and sets at 19:06 on the local clock, which runs on UTC that week: 11 hours 16 minutes of daylight. Two sightseeing blocks fit inside it, with the second one ending at six rather than beginning then. A three-hour boat that leaves at nine is back on the quay with the whole afternoon still lit.

Can you swim in the Azores in October? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Sea surface off the islands averages 72.3°F in October. One qualification travels with the figure: it is the mean of daily maxima over 2015 to 2024, from Open-Meteo’s marine dataset, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour average. Read it as the warmest the top of the water gets on an ordinary October day, not as what greets you at seven in the morning.

With water at 72.3°F and air at 72.7°F, getting in is easy and getting out is the problem, because nothing dries quickly this month. Most swimmers will manage a long stretch without a wetsuit and still want something hot afterward. September’s 75.3°F reads noticeably softer. November’s 68.4°F is where a shorty stops being optional for anyone swimming for pleasure.

On wind and swell we hold nothing datable, and no invented number goes on the Atlantic in fall: the IPMA normals for station 513 give temperature and precipitation, not wave height. The consequence is scheduling rather than gear. Whale and dolphin trips run all year here, last about three hours, and carry an official minimum-age recommendation of five, since a sea an adult calls calm can be rough on a small child. How busy are the Azores in October? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

What can be dated is the slope: highs of 77.0°F in September, 72.7°F in October, 67.8°F in November, with sea temperatures of 75.3, 72.3 and 68.4. With 13.7 rain days in a 31-day month, the reservation that hurts is the rigid one. Refundable rooms and a boat slot you can move matter more than any lead time, and we have no lead-time data for the islands to quote in any case. Two working habits: hold one flexible morning per three nights, and reserve the car before the room, since the car is what lets you drive out from under a cloud. Ponta Delgada has charged a municipal tourist tax since January 2025. The city runs a dedicated platform for it, which confirms that the tax exists and which keeps its rate leaflet behind a login, so we cannot certify an amount. Press and host guides agree on EUR 2 per person per night for guests aged 13 and over, capped at 3 consecutive nights, about EUR 6 a head, with exemptions for under-13s, medical stays, disability of 60 percent or more, and Azores residents. Ask the property to quote it in writing.

The cap decides the bill, and caps differ across Portugal: Porto charges EUR 3 a night up to 7 nights (EUR 21), Funchal EUR 2 up to 7 (EUR 14), Ponta Delgada EUR 2 but stopping at 3. Against numbers that small, the one upgrade that changes the month is the rental car. São Miguel runs 62.1 km long and 15.8 km wide, 744.7 square kilometers in all, and a cloud parked over Furnas is not a cloud over Sete Cidades. Renting a car in Portugal covers the paperwork.

Things to do in the Azores in October

Whale and dolphin watching operates all year in these waters, and the month decides the cast. Blue whales belong to the end of winter. Sperm whales, sei whales, baleen whales and spotted dolphins are the summer list, and October sits behind it. What the month reliably leaves are the residents, common dolphins and common bottlenose dolphins, present in any month, with swimming alongside them permitted. The archipelago is one of the largest whale sanctuaries in the world: more than 20 cetacean species, about a third of all that exist.

Terra Nostra Park at Furnas is the wet-weather anchor, a thermal pool inside a botanical garden, at around EUR 16 for a visiting adult against about EUR 12.80 for a resident, under-6s free. Treat those as an order of magnitude, not a quote: the park’s own visit pages returned 404 and the regional tourism portal returned 403 when we tried to read them on September 8, 2026, and no official opening hours were readable either. Confirm both at the gate. Poça da Beija sits in the same valley, clear water over ferrous mud.

No ticket is listed on the tourism board’s own pages for the lookouts, which is where the island keeps its set pieces: Vista do Rei above the twin Green and Blue lakes of Sete Cidades, and the wilder, higher Lagoa do Fogo. The Caldeiras of Ribeira Grande stand among trees and fumaroles around a thermal building dating from 1811. Tea is the local oddity: Gorreana and Porto Formoso are the only plantations in Europe, both running museum-factories open to visitors, Gorreana growing leaf since 1883.

The Azores in October: a two-day itinerary

Day one stays on the south coast. Breakfast in Ponta Delgada, capital of the island since 1546, before 08:30. A boat at nine puts you back on the quay around noon, three hours being the standard trip, with the resident dolphins doing the work in October. Lunch in town, then drive west and reach Vista do Rei by mid-afternoon while the light is still on both lakes. Last light goes at 19:06, so the day closes with dinner instead of another lookout.

Day two heads east: Furnas by ten for the fumaroles and Poça da Beija, the thermal pool at Terra Nostra through the middle of the day, then the north-coast road home past Gorreana. If the sky shuts, and 3.5 days a month bring 0.39 inch or more, the order flips rather than the plan, because thermal water and a tea factory read better in rain than in sun. Lagoa do Fogo, which loses its lake to cloud, moves to the next clear morning.

The Azores in October vs September and November

Read across and the three months line up cleanly. October gives up 4.3°F of daytime warmth to September and takes 4.9°F from November. Rain is the outlier: 4.65 inches against 3.08 in September and 3.75 in November, 13.7 wet days against 9.4 and 11.8. The sea falls 3.0°F between September and October, then a further 3.9°F into November, which is the step swimmers feel.

Shifting four weeks earlier buys the warmest water of the trio and the driest calendar, at the cost of summer company and summer heat, all of it laid out in September in the Azores. Shifting four weeks later buys a drier month than October and 11.8 wet days instead of 13.7, while the water drops below 70°F and the day keeps shortening: November in the Azores has those figures.

Is October a good time to visit the Azores?

Yes, for a traveler whose plan can move. The month keeps a swimmable 72.3°F sea, 11 hours 16 minutes of daylight in mid-month, and boats that still sail daily, and it charges 13.7 rain days for all of it. No, for a fixed one-shot itinerary, for a family with a child under five on the boat list, and for anyone who packs for 72.7°F and then heads for altitude.

When the answer is no, September is the month to shift to rather than November: 77.0°F air, 75.3°F water, 9.4 rain days, and the same three-hour boats with a longer species list behind them. November trades the other way, 67.8°F and a 68.4°F sea, which serves walkers and thermal bathers better than it serves swimmers.

Of the three, October is the only month that puts a sea above 70°F under a day still longer than eleven hours.

The last word

Book the room refundable, take the boat on the first clear morning of the stay rather than on the day you had penciled in, and let Furnas absorb whatever the sky does next. One last number for the suitcase: the 72.7°F here was measured 35.0 meters above the sea, while Pico da Vara, the island’s summit, stands at 1,105 meters and keeps weather of its own.
