Sagres in November: 66°F Days, 8 Rain Days and a 64°F Sea

A November afternoon in Sagres averages 66.2°F, the night that follows it 53.1°F, and rain falls on about eight days of the month for a total of 3.23 inches. Those figures come from IPMA’s 1991-2020 normals, measured on the cape itself. Put together, they describe walking weather rather than beach weather.

What November takes away is the summer’s margin. Daylight is down to 10 hours 14 minutes on the 15th, the sea has slipped to 64.4°F from October’s 66.3, and the wet days outnumber October’s by nearly two. What it leaves is the cape, the cliffs and everything you can do on foot. Where to stay, how to get there and what the town is like the rest of the year sit in our Sagres guide and the wider Algarve one. The country-level timing question lives in best time to visit Portugal.

Every figure here comes from the thermometer at Sagres itself, IPMA’s station 533, sitting 22.9 m above sea level on the exposed southwest cape. It does not describe the rest of the region: high ground inland runs colder and far wetter, and the far end of a coast keeps its own weather. Pack for an inland trail on a cape reading and you will be wrong by more than a fleece.

IPMA, the Portuguese institute for the sea and the atmosphere, holds the numbers in its 1991-2020 normals: average high 66.2°F, average low 53.1°F, 3.23 inches of precipitation. They come from station 533, a real instrument at 22.9 m on the cape, not a model grid cell averaged across a square of land and ocean. On a headland that distinction is worth stating, because ground a short way inland reads differently.

Rain reaches the gauge on 8.4 days in an average November at IPMA’s threshold of 1 mm (0.04 inch), and 2.6 of those days bring 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more. Call it wet a little under three days in ten, and properly wet two or three times in the month. US weather tables usually count days at 0.10 inch, so the two sets of counts are not interchangeable.

Between the 66.2°F afternoon and the 53.1°F night sit 13.1 degrees, and the cape adds wind to the gap. A fleece plus a windproof shell handles the whole month better than one heavy coat. Add something that dries fast, because 3.23 inches has to land somewhere, and our packing guide has the rest of the list.

On November 15 the sun rises at 7:13 a.m. and sets at 5:27 p.m. local time, for 10 hours 14 minutes of daylight. That moves the last act of the day forward: the cape’s sunset becomes a late-afternoon outing, and any walk you want to finish in daylight needs to start before 3 p.m.

Can you swim in Sagres in November? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea off Sagres averages 64.4°F in November in Open-Meteo’s marine record, taken across 2015 to 2024. One qualification travels with that number: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. Read it as the top of the daily range rather than the water you meet at eight in the morning.

At 64.4°F the water sits close to two degrees below the average afternoon air, cold enough that most people last minutes rather than hours in swimwear alone. Surfers here wear full wetsuits in November and think nothing of it. Anyone used to cold water will call the sea mild, and anyone arriving with an August Algarve in mind will not.

We found no verified wind or swell series for Sagres, so we give no speeds and no wave heights. What we can say is where the readings come from: IPMA’s station stands on the exposed southwest cape, so its figures already carry the exposure the headland is known for. Check a marine forecast the morning you go rather than the week before.

How busy is Sagres in November? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

November falls outside the Algarve’s summer season, and that is a calendar fact rather than a price claim. We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Sagres, so we crown no month cheapest and quote no discount. What is documented is the weather behind the quieter streets: 8.4 wet days against October’s 6.7, and afternoons 6.1 degrees cooler.

With no rate curve to time a booking against, book what is scarce rather than wait for a number to fall. In Sagres that means a car and a room with real heating, both worth pinning early. Some restaurants, surf schools and rental desks run reduced winter hours, and we could not verify which ones this November, so call before you build a day around any of them.

On the tourist tax, our cards on the table: we could not verify whether a municipal lodging charge applies in Sagres, or at what rate, so we quote no figure at all. Ask at the time of booking and read the line on your confirmation.

The upgrade that genuinely changes a November week is the rental car. With rain on 8.4 days and 10 hours 14 minutes of daylight to spend, the difference between a good day and a lost one is being able to leave the moment the sky opens, drive the coast road toward Lagos or north to Carrapateira, and be back for dinner. Our car guide covers the transponder and the insurance line.

Things to do in Sagres in November

Walking is what this month hands you. The Fishermen’s Trail runs along these clifftops as part of the Rota Vicentina, and 66.2°F with a breeze is walking weather in a way the same path in high summer is not. The early light helps: with the sun down at 5:27 p.m., golden hour at the cape arrives while you are still awake and hungry.

The fixed points sit a few minutes apart by car: the Fortaleza de Sagres on its promontory, the lighthouse at Cabo de São Vicente on the southwest corner of mainland Europe, and four beaches with four characters, Tonel, Mareta, Beliche and Martinhal. We could not verify current admission prices or opening hours for the fortress or the lighthouse buildings, so we quote neither. Check both before you drive out.

Between October and December the air over Sagres falls 9.7 degrees, from a 72.3°F average high to 62.6. The sea moves 3.1 degrees across the same stretch, 66.3 to 63.2. That gap is the season in one line: water changes slowly while the air on the cliff path and the fortress walls changes fast, so a wetsuit keeps working long after a beach towel stops.

Nothing charges you to walk. The clifftop paths, the view from the promontory, the sunset at the cape and the sand at Tonel and Mareta cost the same in November as in July, which is nothing. Bring the windproof layer and the day has no other line item.

Sagres in November: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Coffee and out by 8, with sunrise at 7:13 behind you, for the Ponta de Sagres promontory and the fortress walls while the air is still nearer its 53.1°F end. Lunch in town around one, when the day reaches its 66.2°F. Drive out to Cabo de São Vicente by four, take the 5:27 sunset from the clifftop, and come back in the dark to eat at a normal hour.

Day two goes down to the water: Tonel or Beliche in the morning if the swell suits a lesson, Martinhal in the afternoon for the sheltered side of the peninsula, then a section of the Fishermen’s Trail if the legs allow. If the sky turns, and 2.6 days a month it turns hard, swap the beach for the drive east, where the sea caves at Ponta da Piedade hold up under cloud, and save the cliff walk for the next clear window.

Sagres in November vs October and December

Measure October November December
Average high 72.3°F 66.2°F 62.6°F
Average low 59.0°F 53.1°F 49.8°F
Precipitation 2.42 in 3.23 in 2.96 in
Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more 6.7 8.4 8.0
Sea surface, mean of daily maxima 66.3°F 64.4°F 63.2°F

October is the warm one: 72.3°F by day, 59.0°F at night, 2.42 inches of rain on 6.7 days and a 66.3°F sea. November drops to 66.2 and 53.1, comes out the wettest of the three at 3.23 inches over 8.4 days, and still holds the water at 64.4. December cools again to 62.6 and 49.8 with a 63.2°F sea, while its rain total eases back to 2.96 inches on 8.0 days.

Shift four weeks earlier and October buys 6.1 degrees of afternoon warmth, 1.9 degrees of sea and 1.7 fewer wet days, with the full October figures here. Shift four weeks later and December costs 3.6 degrees of air and 1.2 of sea, though the rain total drops. November lands in the middle on temperature and at the top of the three on rainfall, so the choice turns on whether you came for the water or for the cliffs.

Is November a good time to visit Sagres?

Yes for walkers, surfers and anyone who came for the cape. An afternoon at 66.2°F with a breeze is close to perfect on a clifftop path, and a 64.4°F sea in a full wetsuit is a normal session rather than an ordeal. No for anyone whose picture of the Algarve involves lying on sand: 53.1°F nights and 8.4 wet days do not bend for optimism.

If that second reader is you, October is the nearest fix without leaving the shoulder months, at 72.3°F by day, 66.3°F in the water and 6.7 wet days, and our October page walks through it. For genuine beach heat you are looking at summer, and the twelve-month view for the whole country sits in best time to visit Portugal.

Between its two neighbors, November is the month that keeps a walkable 66.2°F afternoon and a 64.4°F sea in the same week, with December taking 3.6 degrees off the first and 1.2 off the second.

The last word

Book the car, pack the shell, and treat the forecast as a daily decision rather than a weekly one. Spread across 8.4 wet days, the month’s 3.23 inches average about 0.38 inch each, enough to send you indoors for an hour and not enough to write off a week. When one day in your stay looks clearly the brightest, spend it at Cabo de São Vicente and move the town day.
