October hands Porto a straight trade. Afternoons still reach 69.3°F, the water off the coast is warmer than it was in September, and the rain roughly doubles: 5.86 inches in an average month, spread across eleven days that register measurable rain. The city’s official normals come from a thermometer at Pedras Rubras, and they do not soften any of that.
What you get in exchange is a city still running summer hours for a few more weeks. The Palácio da Bolsa keeps its April-to-October timetable, 09:00 to 18:30 with no lunch closure, until the 31st. From November 1 it splits the day and shuts at 17:30, and the long indoor afternoon that makes a wet month workable simply stops existing.

The year-round shape of the city sits on Porto and the North, the country’s twelve-month view on Best Time to Visit Portugal, and grape-picking dates up the river on the Douro harvest guide. One small marker of where October sits in the calendar: Livraria Lello closes on January 1, Easter Sunday, May 1, June 24 for São João and December 25. Not one of those falls this month.

These normals come from IPMA, the Portuguese institute for the sea and the atmosphere, station 545 at Porto Pedras Rubras, 67.7 meters above sea level, averaged over 1991 to 2020. The distinction is worth carrying: the reading comes from an instrument standing in one place rather than from a model grid cell interpolated across a region. October’s average high is 69.3°F, the average low 55.2°F, and the month’s total precipitation 5.86 inches.
Rain reaches at least 0.04 inch on 11.1 days in an average October, and 5.0 of those days pass 0.39 inch. Those are IPMA’s own thresholds, not the 0.10 inch that American tables usually count, so the two sets of counts do not swap. Translated into a day: about one in three brings something you notice, and roughly five a month bring the sort of rain that sends you indoors for two hours and keeps you there.
Between the 69.3°F afternoon and the 55.2°F night sits a fourteen-degree gap, and Porto crosses most of it in the hour after sunset. Pack for both halves of the day: a rain shell you can walk in for an hour beats an umbrella you fold at every doorway, and one warm layer covers a late dinner on granite. On October 15 the sun rises at 07:45 and sets at 18:54 in Porto time, which gives 11 hours 10 minutes of daylight. That has one useful consequence for planning: the Clérigos Tower closes at 19:00 all month, so the last admission of the day lands right at sunset, and full dark still arrives a comfortable hour before anyone in Porto thinks about dinner.
Can you swim in Porto in October? Sea at 66.4°F, and what it feels like

One caveat changes how you should read that figure: it is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest moment of each day, so a full 24-hour average sits a shade below it. Morning water runs colder than 66.4°F. Late-afternoon water is what the number actually describes.
In practice, bare skin gets a brisk dip rather than an afternoon. Ten or fifteen minutes is the usual limit before the novelty wears thin, and children reach that limit sooner. A 3/2 wetsuit turns the same water into an ordinary session, which is why the surf schools along this coast keep working long after the beach towels have gone home.
On wind and swell we have nothing verified. No October normal for wind speed or wave height passed our check at the station or in the marine series, so we give no figure here rather than a plausible one. The rain record covers enough of the planning anyway: five days at 0.39 inch or more are not coast days, whatever the thermometer in the water says.
How busy is Porto in October? Prices, booking and the €3 city tax
No monthly occupancy or hotel-price series for Porto passed verification, so you will find no percentage here. The operators’ own calendars still mark the turn. Serralves ran a late-afternoon ticket from 17:00, August 3 to September 30, and it is gone by October 1. The Palácio da Bolsa holds its long April-to-October day until the 31st. October is the last month on the summer side of both calendars.
Booking lead time is the same missing series, so take the mechanics instead of a number of weeks. Livraria Lello sells entry at €15.95 and requires a ticket even from someone who only intends to buy a book. The Bolsa cannot be walked alone: its 30-minute guided visit is mandatory, groups form in order of arrival, and the languages offered are Portuguese, Spanish, French and English. Turn up alone at a busy hour and you wait for the English group to fill.
Porto charges a Taxa Municipal Turística of €3 per overnight stay, capped at seven consecutive nights. Two adults on a five-night October trip owe €30. Children of 12 and under are exempt, as are stays for medical treatment and visitors with a disability of 60 percent or more, those last two extending to two companions each on proof. The charge applies per person rather than per room, which is the part that catches families out.
In a month with eleven wet days, the line worth paying up for is the bed’s location, because transit is cheap enough to make the arithmetic clear. An Andante Azul card costs €0.60. A Z2 title covering central Porto is €1.40 for one hour, ten titles plus one free are €14.00, and an Andante Tour runs €7.50 for 24 hours or €16.00 for 72. Things to do in Porto in October: Lello, Clérigos, Bolsa, Serralves
This is the last month of the Palácio da Bolsa’s long timetable: 09:00 to 18:30, no lunch closure, through October 31. From November 1 the palace runs 09:00 to 13:00 and 14:00 to 17:30, and the afternoon you can spend inside it drops to three and a half hours. Clérigos opens 09:00 to 19:00 every day this month; its 23:00 closing belongs to Easter, summer and Christmas, and October gets none of them.
The named prices, so you can build a budget rather than a mood. Livraria Lello: €15.95, open 09:00 to 19:30 daily, with the ticket working as a voucher deducted from any book among Lello’s own editions. Palácio da Bolsa: €14, or €9.50 for students, schools and seniors, children up to 12 free with an adult. Serralves: €24 for the general ticket covering the museum, the Álvaro Siza wing, the park, the treetop walk, the villa and the House of Cinema, or €15 for the park on its own.
Free in October is narrower than the signage suggests. Serralves opens free on the first Sunday of every month, but only to holders of a Portuguese Citizen Card or Resident Card, sold at the box office and never online, so a visitor from abroad pays the full €24 on that same Sunday. What is genuinely free for everyone: under-12s at Serralves and at the Bolsa with an adult, and those same under-12s are exempt from the €3 city tax. A Porto Card or a Youth Card takes 50 percent off Serralves.
Porto in October: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts at Lello’s 09:00 opening, when the light through the staircase is still low and the €15.95 voucher can be spent on a book before the shelves get crowded. Climb Clérigos around 10:30, eat late, then reach the Bolsa by 14:00 and give yourself a few minutes’ margin so the English group forms with you in it. Keep 17:00 onward for the river, since the mid-month sun sets at 18:54 and the tower stops admitting at 19:00.
Day two belongs to Serralves at €24, park and treetop walk first while the sky holds, museum after. If the rain arrives, invert the order and skip the €15 park-only ticket entirely, which buys you a garden you will not walk. On the five days an average October drops 0.39 inch or more, the fallback is the center: two ticketed roofs, Lello until 19:30 and the Bolsa until 18:30, within the same few blocks.

All three columns come from the same IPMA station and the same 1991 to 2020 period. October gives up 5.0°F of afternoon warmth against September, 69.3°F against 74.3°F, and keeps 7.1°F over November’s 62.2°F. Rain is where the three months separate: 2.69 inches, then 5.86, then 6.53. The sea runs the other way, 66.4°F in October against 62.9°F in September and 62.4°F in November, all read as means of daily maxima on the marine series.
Shift four weeks back and you buy dry ground: September counts 5.8 rain days against October’s eleven, at the cost of 3.5°F of water temperature. Shift four weeks forward and November takes 7.1°F off the afternoon, 6.3°F off the night, adds two more wet days and closes the Bolsa for lunch, ending its day at 17:30 instead of 18:30.
Is October a good time to visit Porto?
Yes, if your trip runs on interiors, food and unhurried afternoons. Eleven wet days out of thirty-one leaves twenty that are not, the thermometer still shows 69.3°F, and the ticketed sights hold their long hours to the last day of the month. No, if the coast is the reason you booked: 5.86 inches of rain and five days above 0.39 inch will decide too much of the week for you.
When the answer lands on no, September is the month to take instead. It brings 2.69 inches of rain against 5.86, 5.8 wet days against eleven, and 74.3°F afternoons that hold longer into the evening. You pay for that in the water, which averages 62.9°F, a full 3.5°F colder than the sea you would have had four weeks later.
What no other month in this trio can offer: the warmest water of the three at 66.4°F, sitting under the last long museum timetable of the year.
The last word
Sleep within walking distance of Clérigos and let the sky reorder your days rather than your budget. One mechanical trap before you go: the reusable Andante Azul card costs €0.60 and holds only one kind of title at a time, so a Z2 title for the center and a Z3 title for a longer hop cannot share it. Buy a second card. It costs sixty cents, and it saves the argument at the machine while the rain does its five-inch work outside.
