The Algarve in May: Weather, Sea Temperature, Lifeguards and Crowds

May on the Algarve brings Faro afternoons that average 74.3°F and a mid-month sunset at 8:34 pm. The limestone cliffs are warm enough for a T-shirt walk, the sea sits at 63.4°F, and in 2026 a single council, Albufeira, put lifeguards on its sand before June.

You have already picked the coast, and our Algarve guide covers the towns and where to sleep. What May changes is how warm the afternoons run and whether anyone watches the water when you swim. April sits on one side with more rain, June on the other with a warmer sea.

Go in May for 74.3°F afternoons at Faro and 14-hour days, base in Albufeira if you want a lifeguard from the 15th, and wait for June if a warm sea matters more than cool walking.

Go for: cliff walks in mid-70s warmth, long light after dinner, a guided paddle into the Benagil cave and staffed Albufeira beaches in the second half of the month.

Think twice before: planning May swims in Lagos, Faro or Tavira. In 2026 their lifeguards started June 1, and before May 15 no council on the coast had any.

The May beach dates quoted below come from Portugal’s 2026 bathing-season order, Portaria n.º 204-A/2026/1, published April 30, 2026. It fixes the season for 2026 only, so for a trip next May, check the new order before you choose a base around it. Algarve weather in May: average highs, lows and rain days

Every figure here comes from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, and its 1991–2020 normals for station 554 at Faro: a real thermometer 5.0 meters above sea level, not a reanalysis model. Faro averages a high of 74.3°F and a low of 59.0°F in May, with 1.03 inches of precipitation. The station sits at the eastern end of a coast about 150 kilometers (93 miles) long, and its numbers do not travel far. The hills inland run colder and far wetter, and the western end around Sagres keeps its own weather, so read Faro before a beach day rather than before a mountain trail.

Rain falls on 3.8 days of an average May at IPMA’s 1 mm threshold (0.04 inch), roughly one day in eight. A soaking of 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more averages 0.7 day, fewer than one per May. US tables start counting at 0.10 inch, so IPMA’s counts come out higher than an American almanac would give for the same skies. Keep one flexible day in a week-long trip and a compact umbrella in the day bag.

Between the 74.3°F afternoon and the 59.0°F night at Faro lies a 15.3°F drop. Shorts and a T-shirt carry the day, but a sweater or light jacket belongs in the bag for a terrace dinner, along with a long-sleeve layer for early starts. Heading up into the hills or out west, pack one layer more than Faro suggests: we have no station figures for those areas, only the knowledge that they differ. Our Portugal packing guide has the full kit.

On May 15 the Algarve gets about 14 hours 13 minutes of daylight. The sun rises at 6:21 am and sets at 8:34 pm Lisbon time (UTC+1 in summer), so a beach afternoon can run past 7 pm in full light, and a 9 pm dinner begins just after sunset.

Can you swim in the Algarve in May? Sea temperature in May

Sea surface off the Algarve averages 63.4°F in May, according to the Open-Meteo Marine API over 2015–2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so a 24-hour average would come out a shade cooler. Tables that average around the clock may show a lower May number, and both readings can be right. By the same method April averages 63.5°F, so the water barely moves between the two months.

For a swimmer, 63.4°F is brisk: a short dip for most people, and a wetsuit for anyone planning to snorkel or paddle for long. Where you swim matters as much as the degree. Under the 2026 order, Albufeira staffed its 25 designated beaches from May 15, while Lagos, Lagoa, Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Silves, Aljezur and Vila do Bispo waited until June 1. In May 2026, a swim outside Albufeira, or anywhere before the 15th, was an unsupervised swim.

We found no wind or swell series for May off the Algarve, so we give no figure for either. Check the flag at an Albufeira lifeguard post and the day’s marine forecast before you go in. Swimming into the Benagil sea cave is banned in any conditions: the national maritime authority’s Edital 019/2024, in force since August 13, 2024, covers entry from the beach or from a boat, with or without a float.

How busy is the Algarve in May? Crowds and prices

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room rates for the Algarve, so we crown no month cheap or expensive. The calendar gives a firmer marker. In 2026, May fell before June 1, the lifeguard start date in nine councils including Lagos, Faro and Tavira, so most of the coast was still outside its official beach season.

Book the Benagil cave before the flight. Since July 2025 you cannot rent a kayak and paddle in alone, and the guided kayak and paddleboard tours that remain run under a cap on how many craft sit inside at once and a limit on each group’s stay. We found no booking-lead data, so we give no week count. Reserve once your dates are firm, and pick a morning early in the trip to leave room for a weather swap.

We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for any Algarve council, so we give no amount. Ask the property whether one applies and how it is charged before you pay, and use our Portugal trip-cost guide for the daily budget.

A guided kayak or paddleboard group can stay up to eight minutes inside the Benagil cave, against two minutes for a motorized boat. The boats must keep 15 meters (about 50 feet) off the arches and enter by the western one, while paddlers use the eastern arch. We have no prices to quote for either option, but on the paddle you get four times the minutes inside. The time limits come from the Portimão harbor authority, as our Benagil guide details.

Things to do in the Algarve in May

The Sagres promontory, open 9:30 am to 5:30 pm · Illustration

Albufeira was the only Algarve council with lifeguards in May 2026 (and again in October), so a May beach day with cover means an Albufeira base, from the 15th on. The same weeks bring 14-hour days and highs 5.9°F below June’s, good conditions for the cliff paths at Ponta da Piedade and above Benagil. See our Albufeira guide for the town itself.

The Fortaleza de Sagres opens 9:30 am to 5:30 pm, with last entry at 5 pm, and one ticket covers the fortress and the Sagres promontory. Ask at the gate for the adult admission price. At Benagil, boats and kayaks may not land on the beach inside the cave, and every tour needs a licensed guide.

Neither site changes its rules with the season, but the conditions around them do. The sea holds almost still from April’s 63.5°F to May’s 63.4°F, while Faro’s afternoon high climbs 5.0°F, from 69.3°F to 74.3°F. A May cave paddle is a warmer morning on the same water. At Sagres, with sunset at 8:34 pm, about three hours of daylight remain after the fortress closes at 5:30 pm for the drive and an evening in Lagos.

The A22, the Via do Infante that runs the length of the Algarve, is toll-free. Infraestruturas de Portugal keeps its toll rate at zero under Lei n.º 37/2024 of August 7, and that zero covers only a handful of roads, not Portuguese motorways in general. The Sagres fortress is free on Sundays and public holidays until 2 pm, but only for residents of Portugal, so visitors pay at the gate. Our car rental guide covers tolls elsewhere.

The Algarve in May: a two-day itinerary

Day one belongs to Sagres. Drive the toll-free A22 for the east-west stretch and time your arrival for the 9:30 am opening, while the morning is still cool. Walk the promontory before noon, eat lunch in Sagres or Lagos, and spend the warm part of the afternoon on the Ponta da Piedade cliff paths or a Lagos beach, remembering that Lagos had no lifeguards until June 1 in 2026. Save the last hour of light, roughly 7:30 to 8:34 pm, for the coast road or a terrace table.

On day two, take the guided kayak or paddleboard tour into Benagil in the morning, up to eight minutes inside through the eastern arch. After lunch, drive to an Albufeira beach for a swim under lifeguard cover in 63.4°F water, if the date falls after May 15. If one of May’s 3.8 wet days lands here, swap the days: the cave tour runs at the operator’s call, while the Sagres fortress keeps its 9:30 am to 5:30 pm hours in any weather. The Algarve in May vs April and June

Faro (IPMA 1991–2020) April May June
Average high 69.3°F 74.3°F 80.2°F
Average low 54.3°F 59.0°F 64.0°F
Precipitation 1.54 in 1.03 in 0.20 in
Days with 1 mm or more 5.3 3.8 0.8
Sea surface 63.5°F 63.4°F 66.9°F
Lifeguards (2026 order) None on the coast Albufeira from May 15 Albufeira plus nine councils from June 1

At Faro the average high climbs from 69.3°F in April to 74.3°F in May and 80.2°F in June, and the low from 54.3°F to 59.0°F to 64.0°F. Precipitation falls from 1.54 inches to 1.03 and then 0.20, with rain days at 5.3, 3.8 and 0.8. The sea reads 63.5°F, 63.4°F and 66.9°F, so May swims in April’s water and the jump comes in June.

Moving four weeks earlier to April costs 5.0°F of afternoon warmth and adds 1.5 rain days, for the same sea and no staffed beach anywhere on the coast under the 2026 dates. Moving four weeks later to June adds 3.5°F to the sea, cuts rain days to 0.8 and puts lifeguards on beaches in nine more councils, with highs 5.9°F warmer for walking. Compare the detail in the Algarve in April and the Algarve in June.

Is May a good time to visit the Algarve?

Yes for walkers, cliff and cave sightseers, and anyone happy to swim in 63.4°F water from an Albufeira beach after May 15, all of it under 74.3°F afternoons and 14 hours of light. No for a family counting on warm, lifeguarded swims in Lagos, Faro or Tavira: in 2026 those councils staffed their beaches only from June 1. Our Portugal with kids guide helps with the rest of that plan.

If the answer is no, pick June. The sea averages 66.9°F, rain days drop to 0.8, and the 2026 lifeguard season covered Albufeira plus nine councils, with 80.2°F highs at Faro as the trade. Our best time to visit Portugal sets June against the rest of the year.

In May you get Albufeira’s staffed beaches from the 15th, a sea within 0.1°F of April’s and afternoons 5.9°F cooler than June’s, all under 14 hours 13 minutes of mid-month daylight.

The last word

Choose the base before the dates: in the second half of May, Albufeira is where a lifeguard watches the water, and everywhere else you swim on your own judgment. The 2026 order also named which beaches counted as bathing beaches at all, and a beach it left out had no assured cover when it was published, so check the designation before you fall for a hidden cove. Water quality through the season comes from Portugal’s national environment agency. Pack a sweater for the 59.0°F nights and book the eight-minute paddle before you fly.
