You have picked the Algarve. August fills in the rest. Afternoons average 84.6°F at Faro, the sea peaks around 66.8°F on an average day, and the sun sets after 20:20 in mid-month. The lifeguard season covers every council on the coast, from Aljezur to Castro Marim.
Shift the trip four weeks and the picture moves. July runs a fraction hotter by day (84.9°F) and drier (0.04 inch of rain). Every weather figure here comes from one official thermometer: IPMA’s station 554 at Faro, 5 meters above the sea, on the eastern stretch of a coast about 150 km (roughly 93 miles) long. It does not describe the whole Algarve. The hills inland run cooler and far wetter, and the western end around Lagos and Sagres keeps its own weather, so check a local forecast before a mountain trail.

IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, publishes 1991–2020 normals for Faro: an average August high of 84.6°F, an average low of 67.8°F and 0.12 inch of precipitation for the entire month. These are readings from a real station thermometer at 5 meters, not a reanalysis model’s grid cell.
At Faro, 0.2 days in an average August reach 1 mm (0.04 inch) of rain. Put plainly, one wet day turns up in roughly five Augusts, and a 10 mm (0.39 inch) soaking about one August in ten. IPMA counts from 1 mm, a lower bar than the 0.10-inch threshold US tables use, so its counts will not match an American almanac. Plan every day of the trip as a dry one.
Nights run 16.8°F below the afternoon, from 84.6°F at the top of the day to 67.8°F around dawn. Pack a light sweater or long sleeves for a late terrace dinner or a sunrise start, and a hat and sunscreen for the midday hours.
On August 15 the sun rises at 06:47 and sets at 20:24 Lisbon time (05:47 and 19:24 UTC), for about 13 hours 37 minutes of daylight. A swim at 19:30 still has close to an hour of sun left.
Can you swim in the Algarve in August? Sea temperature
Open-Meteo’s marine data puts the sea surface off the Algarve at 66.8°F in August, averaged over 2015–2024. That figure is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it sits a shade above a 24-hour average. Tables quoting a slightly lower August figure may be averaging the whole day and night.
In practice, 66.8°F water meets 84.6°F air, so expect a cool first step in off hot sand. August falls inside the lifeguarded season in every council under the 2026 order, Portaria n.º 204-A/2026/1. A beach not named in that order had no assured cover when it was published, and the national environment agency posts water-quality results through the season.

How busy is the Algarve in August? Crowds and prices
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate data for the Algarve, so we crown no month the priciest. On the calendar, August sits in the middle of summer, between July and September, with every council’s beaches staffed. For what a day on the road costs, see our Portugal trip-cost guide.
We have no booking-lead data for rooms, so we give no week count. One August booking has a hard ceiling. Benagil cave visits now go only with a licensed guide, the number of craft inside at once is capped, and renting a kayak to go in alone ended in July 2025. Reserve the guided paddle as soon as your travel dates are fixed.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for the Algarve councils, so we give no figure. Ask your host at booking whether a municipal tourist tax applies to your nights and how it is collected.
The one extra that changes an August day is the guided paddle into Benagil. A licensed kayak or paddleboard group may stay inside for up to eight minutes, against two minutes for a motorized boat, which must also hold 15 meters off the arches. Things to do in the Algarve in August
Only July and August put lifeguards on the designated beaches of every council at the same time. The shortest season in the 2026 order, at one beach in Castro Marim, runs from 1 July to 31 August. Albufeira’s 25 designated beaches start earliest, on 15 May, and Lagos, Lagoa, Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Silves, Aljezur and Vila do Bispo run 1 June to 30 September.
At Benagil, the sea cave is a boat or guided-paddle visit only. The maritime authority’s Edital 019/2024, in force since 13 August 2024 and amended in 2025, bans swimming in, with or without a float, and bans landing on the inner beach. Motorized boats use the western arch, paddlers the eastern one. At Sagres, the Fortaleza opens 09:30 to 17:30 with last entry at 17:00, and one ticket covers the fortress and the promontory. Ask at the gate for the adult ticket price.
In July and August alike the sea averages 66.8°F. The air is where August shows. With Faro highs of 84.6°F, the open ground of the Sagres promontory suits the 09:30 opening or the last hour before the 17:00 final entry, and the fortress closes nearly three hours before the 20:24 sunset.
Swimming on a designated beach costs nothing, and in August each one has lifeguard cover. The Sagres fortress offers free entry on Sundays and public holidays until 14:00, but only to residents of Portugal, so visitors pay at the gate. Sunset over the Sagres cliffs, outside the walls after closing, is free to anyone.
The Algarve in August: a two-day itinerary
Day one heads west. Take an early licensed guided paddle to Benagil, booked ahead, soon after the 06:47 sunrise while the air is still near its 67.8°F overnight low. Spend the hottest hours on a lifeguarded beach near Carvoeiro or back at your base, away from the 84.6°F peak. Drive on to Sagres in time for the 17:00 last entry at the Fortaleza, then stay on the cliffs for the 20:24 sunset.
Day two heads east to Faro or Tavira, both staffed from 1 June to 30 September, with a swim before late morning. If the weather turns, expect a single wet day at most: Faro averages 0.2 days of 1 mm rain in August. Swap the beach for Faro’s old town and keep the swim for the next morning. August’s 84.6°F high sits 0.3°F under July’s 84.9°F and 5.1°F above September’s 79.5°F. Lows run 67.3°F, 67.8°F and 64.9°F across the three months. Rain climbs from 0.04 inch in July to 0.12 in August and 0.85 in September, while days with 1 mm or more go from 0.2 and 0.2 to 1.9. The sea holds at 66.8°F through July and August, then slips to 65.4°F.
Moving the trip to July costs nothing in sea temperature and trims monthly rain to a third of August’s. Moving to September gains afternoons 5.1°F cooler for walking, with lifeguards on duty through 30 September in most councils and 15 October in Albufeira. You give up 1.4°F of sea and the Castro Marim beach whose season ends on 31 August, and you take on about 1.9 wet days.
Is August a good time to visit the Algarve?
Yes, for beach vacations: August at Faro averages 84.6°F, one wet day in about five years, and a lifeguard on every designated beach. No, for walkers who want mild afternoons or swimmers who want warm water, since highs stay within 0.3°F of July’s and the sea at 66.8°F runs no warmer than July’s.

Along with July, August is the only month when every council’s designated beaches, the Castro Marim short-season one included, have lifeguards on the same days, and it is the pair’s warmer-night half at 67.8°F.

Book the guided Benagil paddle first, then shape each August day around the heat: swim early, rest through the 84.6°F afternoon, and end on the Sagres cliffs for the 20:24 sunset. The drives between cost nothing in tolls.
