Albufeira in July: Heat, Sea Temperature and Rain Days

Albufeira in July has a thermometer behind it: IPMA station 554 at Faro, five meters above the sea, reading an average high of 84.9°F, an average low of 67.3°F and 0.04 inches of rain for the whole month over 1991-2020. That last figure is not a rounding error. It is the amount a single millimeter of rain would put in the gauge, and an average July gets 0.2 days of it.

What the month takes back is room and flexibility. July and August are the high season on the Algarve calendar, the beach-walk rooms go first, and the Atlantic stays Atlantic: the sea off Albufeira averages 66.8°F, about 18°F below the air. Sunrise on the 15th is 6:23 am and sunset 8:52 pm, which is the real gift of the date.

July gives Albufeira the driest record of the summer at 0.04 inches and 14 hours 30 minutes of daylight, and asks for an early alarm, a room booked well ahead and patience with a 66.8°F sea.

Go for: the driest of the three summer months at 0.04 inches, 14 hours 30 minutes of daylight, and evenings that hold warm on a 67.3°F average low.

Think twice before: booking July for the swimming alone. The water averages 66.8°F while the air averages 84.9°F, and that step down is felt in the first minute.

Every figure here is measured at IPMA station 554, Faro, altitude 5.0 m, across the 1991-2020 normals period: a real thermometer by the coast, not a model grid cell. July’s average high is 84.9°F, its average low 67.3°F. One caveat travels with those numbers. Faro sits at the eastern end of the Algarve while Albufeira is central, so read them as a coastal figure for this stretch rather than a description of the region. Higher ground inland runs colder and far wetter, and packing for a hill walk on a sea-level reading is how people get caught out.

Rain in July amounts to 0.04 inches for the month, the same quantity a single millimeter day would leave in the gauge. An average July records 0.2 such days, roughly one July in five with anything measurable at all. IPMA counts against its own 1 mm threshold, not the 0.10-inch line American tables use, so the two sets of rain-day counts are not interchangeable. The practical consequence: a July day in Albufeira needs a shade plan rather than a rain plan, and an umbrella in the suitcase is dead weight.

Between the 84.9°F high and the 67.3°F low sits 17.6°F of daily swing, and it lands after dark. Afternoons on open sand run hot enough that most visitors surrender the 2 to 5 pm block to shade, air conditioning or a nap, then come back out. Evenings on a terrace at 9 pm are warm but not tropical, and a long-sleeved layer gets used most nights. Our packing guide has the rest of the list, including the one item people forget: closed shoes for cliff paths.

Daylight on July 15 runs about 14 hours 30 minutes, with the sun up at 6:23 am and down at 8:52 pm local time. That structure is what makes the month workable: two usable outdoor windows separated by a dead middle, and dinner still eaten in daylight. Beach light stays good until around 8, and the drive back from a western cove does not have to be done in the dark.

Can you swim in Albufeira in July? Sea temperature and what it feels like

Sea surface off Albufeira averages 66.8°F in July, from the Open-Meteo Marine API averaged over 2015 to 2024. The number is a mean of daily maxima, so it reads a shade warmer than a 24-hour average of the same water would. Tables that publish a full-day mean will print something slightly lower for the same month, and both figures can be correct at once.

Against an 84.9°F air average, 66.8°F is an 18.1°F step down, and the first minute of an Atlantic swim in the Algarve is honest about it. People go in quickly, swim hard, and come out to let the sun do the rewarming, which is exactly why the 2 pm shade rule and the swimming schedule work together. Children tend to stay in longer than the adults watching them. Nobody here swims the way they would in the Mediterranean in August.

We could not verify wind speeds or swell heights for Albufeira in July, so no wave figure appears here. Our sources carry the water temperature and the air normals, and nothing more on the sea state. For which coves sit sheltered from a westerly and which beaches take the swell head-on, the Algarve guide is the page that names them.

How busy is Albufeira in July? Crowds, prices and the demand peak

July falls inside the northern European school holiday window, and Albufeira was built for that trade. That is a calendar fact rather than a price claim: we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for the town, so no month gets crowned the most expensive of the year here. What is certain is that July and August are the two weeks-deep peak of the Algarve season, and the town’s capacity is spoken for against them.

Booking behaves accordingly. Eight to twelve weeks ahead (est.) is a sane lead time for a room within a flat walk of the sand, and longer if the vacation includes a specific hotel or a family-sized apartment. Rental cars with automatic transmission are the other item that runs out first, a quirk our car guide explains. Flights from the US follow the same summer calendar, with routes and connections laid out in the flights guide.

We could not verify a municipal tourist tax rate for Albufeira, so we give no per-night amount and no total. Leave a line in the budget for the possibility and confirm it at the moment of booking, when the property states it. Everything else in the daily spend, from a rental day to a restaurant dinner, sits in the cost breakdown.

One line item genuinely changes the month, and it is the room. Air conditioning and a short, flat return from the beach reshape a July day more than any restaurant upgrade, because the hours from 2 to 5 pm are spent under a roof either way. A room that makes those three hours pleasant buys back a third of the vacation.

Things to do in Albufeira in July

With 14 hours 30 minutes of daylight and 0.2 measurable rain days, July hands you two separate outings inside one day. A beach morning that ends at noon, and a second departure at 6 pm that still finishes in light at 8:52. June cannot quite stretch that second window with the same confidence, and neither can a month with 0.8 wet days on the books.

Praia dos Pescadores lies directly below the Old Town, with a public elevator and a pedestrian tunnel doing the climb instead of your legs. East, Olhos de Água is named for the freshwater springs that surface on the sand at low tide, and Praia da Falésia runs on from there under ochre cliffs toward Vilamoura. West by boat sits the Benagil sea cave.

The water barely registers the season: 66.9°F in June, 66.8°F in July and again in August on the marine data. Air does all the moving, from an 80.2°F June average high to 84.9°F in July. That 4.7°F is the whole difference in how these places feel, and it is why the cliff shade at Falésia becomes a resource in July rather than a detail, and why Olhos de Água’s cold springs on the sand are suddenly worth standing in.

We found no dated July festival and no free-entry scheme for Albufeira in our sources, so we name none rather than guess. Free stays what the coast already provides: the clifftop paths above the town beaches, the fishermen’s promenade, and a sunset that does not happen until 8:52 pm. Further west, Ponta da Piedade and Lagos hold the same trick for an evening drive.

Albufeira in July: a two-day itinerary

Day one. Sunrise is 6:23 am, so breakfast at 7:30 and sand by 8 gives four cool hours on Falésia before the heat settles. Lunch around 12:30, then the 2 to 5 pm block indoors, which is the only way anyone survives an 84.9°F afternoon on open cliffs. Back out at 6 for the Old Town and the elevator down to Praia dos Pescadores, a swim in water that has had all day to reach its 66.8°F, dinner at 8:30 with the light still on the water.

Day two. Take the boat west to Benagil in the morning, then keep the afternoon shaded and inland before a second evening outing. If the sky turns, the odds say it will not: 0.2 days in an average July record even a millimeter. Should it happen, Faro’s walled old town and Carvoeiro absorb a gray half-day without anyone feeling cheated, and the car does the rest, as our getting-around guide sets out.

Albufeira in July vs June and August

Measure June July August
Average high 80.2°F 84.9°F 84.6°F
Average low 64.0°F 67.3°F 67.8°F
Precipitation 0.20 in 0.04 in 0.12 in
Days ≥ 1 mm 0.8 0.2 0.2
Sea surface (daily maxima) 66.9°F 66.8°F 66.8°F

July runs 4.7°F warmer by day than June and 0.3°F warmer than August, which makes it the hottest of the three by a margin nobody would feel. Nights separate the months better: 64.0°F in June against 67.3°F in July and 67.8°F in August. Rain is where July stands apart, at 0.04 inches against June’s 0.20 and August’s 0.12. The sea refuses to play along and sits within a tenth of a degree across all three, from 66.9°F to 66.8°F.

Shift four weeks earlier and you gain cooler sleeping at 64.0°F, softer afternoons and the same water, while paying 0.8 rain days instead of 0.2 and 0.16 inches more rain. Shift four weeks later and almost nothing moves except the calendar: August gives back 0.3°F of daytime heat, adds half a degree to the nights and triples the rain from a very small base. The June page has that month in full, and the national verdict covers the whole year.

Is July a good time to visit Albufeira?

Yes, if your dates are fixed by school holidays and you want reliability: 84.9°F days, 0.04 inches of rain for the month, 14 hours 30 minutes of light. No, if you sleep badly in warm rooms, want a coastline without company, or expect to swim for an hour at a time in water that averages 66.8°F. That last expectation is the one that produces disappointed reviews.

When the answer tips to no, June is the shift that changes something measurable. Days drop 4.7°F to 80.2°F, nights drop 3.3°F to 64.0°F, and the sea reads 0.1°F warmer at 66.9°F, so nothing is lost in the water. The invoice is rain: 0.8 days at 1 mm or more against July’s 0.2.

The one thing July holds over both neighbors is the combination: the driest record of the three at 0.04 inches, paired with 14 hours 30 minutes of daylight on the 15th.

The last word

Book July if the calendar chooses for you, then spend the money on the room: air conditioning and a flat walk back from the sand are what make an 84.9°F afternoon survivable. One figure from IPMA that has not appeared yet: an average July records 0.0 days with 10 mm (0.39 inch) of rain or more. A washed-out week is not the thing to plan against in Albufeira. The 2 pm sun is, and the day gets built around a 6:23 am sunrise and a three-hour gap in the middle.
