Lisbon runs 64°F by day and 54°F at night, with 53 mm of rain spread over eight days: enough to want a shell, rarely enough to cancel a plan. The real dividend is out of town. Faro logs the country’s driest April: 43 mm over six days, afternoons at 65°F, nights at 56°F. The coast is in bloom rather than in swimwear, and the cliff paths of the central coast and the wilder west carry more wildflowers than walkers. Porto, the Douro & the north: 123 mm buys the green

Porto pays for its color: 123 mm across twelve wet days, the heaviest line on this page, with mornings at 50°F. Call it Seattle arithmetic with better lunch. Port lodges across the river, the Serralves galleries and a two-hour table absorb the wet hours easily. The Alentejo: wildflowers, Évora and empty roads

This is the month the plains earn their reputation. Flowers yes, swimming no. The western cliffs and the Alentejo hit their wildflower peak this month, months after the almond blossom that sells February. What April will not deliver is a beach day in the American sense: 62°F is Northern California water.
