ÓBIDOS · PORTUGAL · NOVEMBER
November hands Óbidos a mild, wet, short-lit month. The official normals for the coast just west of town put the average high at 62.6°F and the average low at 55.0°F, with 3.86 inches of rain spread across about ten and a half days. Daylight on the 15th runs ten hours and four minutes. That combination is why people walk the wall circuit in a fleece at ten in the morning and are sitting over a ginja by six, with the lanes already dark and lamp-lit.
Set against October, the month gives up 4.7°F of daytime warmth and takes on an extra wet day and half an inch of water. Set against December, it gains 3.1°F by day and carries more rain, not less. Everything that is true of the town in any month (how you arrive from Lisbon, where the rooms are) sits in our Óbidos guide. The figures below are the dated part.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · ÓBIDOS · NOVEMBER
November gives Óbidos 62.6°F afternoons, 10.5 wet days and a 5:24 pm sunset: come for the walls in a sweater and the lanes quiet after dark, and take October instead if you want the light to last.
IPMA 1991-2020 NORMALS · STATION 531 CABO CARVOEIRO · NO SEA TEMPERATURE VERIFIED
Go for: walking weather in the low sixties, a wall circuit you can do twice in a day, and evenings inside the gates once the day visitors have gone.
Think twice before: building the trip around beach or lagoon swimming. We verified no water temperature for this coast, and the air averages 55.0°F overnight.

Every figure here comes from one thermometer: IPMA station 531 at Cabo Carvoeiro, on the headland at Peniche, 32 meters up and directly on the Atlantic. Óbidos sits a short way inland behind its walls, and inland nights usually run a touch colder than a headland’s. We found no published normal for the town itself, so we serve the coastal record and tell you where it stands. Higher ground in this stretch of Estremadura is colder and wetter again, so do not pack for a hill walk on a sea-level reading.
Óbidos weather in November: average highs, lows and rain days

Those normals cover thirty Novembers, 1991 through 2020, and they come from a measured station record rather than a model grid cell drawn over the ocean. The distinction matters, because a grid cell averaged across water and hills can sit a couple of degrees off a real instrument. What IPMA’s instrument reports is a month that never turns cold and never turns warm: 62.6°F by afternoon, 55.0°F before dawn, 3.86 inches of rain over the whole of it.
Ten and a half days in an average November record at least 0.04 inch (1 mm), and 3.2 of them reach 0.39 inch (10 mm). Roughly one day in three shows measurable rain, then, and about three days in the month bring the kind of rain that ends a wall walk rather than dampening it. Watch the thresholds before you compare notes with an American almanac: IPMA counts from 1 mm, while US tables generally start at 0.10 inch, so the two sets of rain-day counts are not interchangeable.
Day and night sit just 7.6°F apart. That narrow spread settles what goes in the bag: nothing needs to be heavy, and nothing dries quickly. A wind-resistant rain shell beats a winter coat, one warm layer under it covers the mornings, and grippy soles are worth more than anything else you pack, because the cobbles inside the gates and the top of the wall both turn slick. Our Portugal packing guide has the rest of the list.
On November 15 the sun rises at 7:20 am and sets at 5:24 pm local time, ten hours and four minutes of daylight. The afternoon closes fast after that: by five the walls read as silhouette, and by half past the lanes are working off their lamps. Book the outdoor half of the day before four and give the rest to a long dinner, which is no hardship in a town this small.
How warm is Óbidos in November?
Two figures carry the month: 62.6°F and 55.0°F, 7.6°F apart. October runs a slightly wider 7.8°F between 67.3 and 59.5, and December widens again to 8.1°F between 59.5 and 51.4. None of the three swings much, because the Atlantic flattens this coast’s year in both directions. November’s version of that flatness lands in the low sixties through the afternoon and the mid fifties before sunrise.
In practice you dress once and adjust once. Step out at eight and expect something close to 55.0°F with sea air moving: long sleeves, a warm layer, the shell on. By two in the afternoon you are near 62.6°F and the shell is in the bag unless it is actively raining. Nobody needs gloves for this. What people underestimate is the wind on the coast west of town, which makes the same reading feel several degrees colder on an open headland than inside the walls.
Frost is not in our data. IPMA’s monthly normals give means, not counts of nights at or below 32°F, and we could not verify a frost-day series for this station, so we quote no number. What the mean does say is that 55.0°F sits 23°F above freezing, and a coastal November night reaching the freezing point would fall a long way outside the average. We also found no sea-surface series for Peniche or the Lagoa de Óbidos, so no water temperature appears anywhere here.
How busy is Óbidos in November? Crowds and prices
November falls between the summer season and the year-end holidays, and that much is calendar rather than opinion. Pricing it is where we stop: we found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Óbidos, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. For a budget shaped in actual dollars, our Portugal trip-cost guide works at country level and is the honest place to start.
We could not verify booking-window data for the town either. One structural thing is worth knowing anyway: the walled town is small, and the beds inside the gates are limited in any month, so weekends fill ahead of midweek year round. Treat Saturday as the busy end of a November week and Tuesday as the quiet one. If sleeping within the walls is the reason for the trip, reserve it weeks out rather than days, and see where to stay in Portugal for how the rest of a route fits around it.
On the lodging tax, we have nothing to give you. We could not verify whether Óbidos levies a municipal tourist tax, or at what rate, so no percentage appears. Ask the property directly when you book, since a charge of that kind is normally collected at check-in rather than shown inside an online total. Keep the receipt if you are claiming anything back.
The one place where paying more genuinely changes the month is the bed. Day visitors come and go with the light, and in November the light is gone at 5:24 pm. A room on Rua Direita buys you the walled town at eight in the morning and again at seven at night, both of which are outside the visiting day. If those rooms are taken, book dinner inside the gates and sleep just beyond the Porta da Vila.
Things to do in Óbidos in November

62.6°F is the temperature at which the full wall circuit stops being an effort. You can walk the top, climb to the castle end, cross the town twice and still not sweat through the one warm layer you brought. October’s 67.3°F afternoons are pleasant in a different register, and December’s 59.5°F asks for a thicker coat on the exposed stretches. The catch is the 10.5 wet days: a November plan needs an indoor half, and the good ones name it in advance.
The geography inside the gates is simple enough to hold in your head. Rua Direita runs from the Porta da Vila to the castle at the northern end, now a pousada, with the Igreja de Santa Maria and its blue-and-white tiled interior on the square about halfway along. Outside, the old aqueduct strides away across the fields, and the coast is close: the Lagoa de Óbidos to the west, then Peniche and Cabo Carvoeiro. We could not verify current ticket prices or winter hours for the churches or the museum, so we quote none.
What the month changes is the stone, not the map. The wall top is unrailed and uneven, and on the 3.2 days a November averages above 0.39 inch of rain it turns slick enough to be a genuinely bad idea in smooth soles. Out at Cabo Carvoeiro, 32 meters above the water, the same weather system that reads as a gray hour behind the walls arrives as a hard-blowing wet afternoon. The lagoon is for walking and watching birds in this month, not for getting into.
The free part of November is the light, and it is the one quantity we can count: ten hours and four minutes of it on the 15th, from 7:20 am. Wandering the lanes behind Rua Direita costs nothing but shoe leather, and the views from the wall over the rooftops need no reservation. Beyond that we verified no admission price, no free day and no winter closure for any site in town, so call ahead before you build a morning around an opening time.
Óbidos in November: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts late by summer standards, because the sun does not clear the horizon until 7:20 am. Be on the wall circuit by 8:30 while the stone is dry and the town is still its own, then drop into Rua Direita for coffee around ten. Give the middle of the day to the Igreja de Santa Maria and a long indoor lunch, which is the flexible hour if rain comes. Back on the walls at four for the last of the light, sunset at 5:24, dinner inside the gates by seven.
Day two goes to the coast if the sky allows: the Lagoa de Óbidos in the morning, then west to Peniche and Cabo Carvoeiro, where the wind does the talking, or north to Nazaré for the big-swell season. All of that needs wheels, and our car guide covers the tolls. If the front settles in, invert the day: keep the town, take the museum and the church in the morning, and save the walls for whatever dry hour turns up between the showers.
Óbidos in November vs October and December
| Measure | October | November | December |
|---|---|---|---|

| Average low | 59.5°F | 55.0°F | 51.4°F |
| Precipitation | 3.33 in | 3.86 in | 2.70 in |
| Days with 0.04 in (1 mm) or more | 9.2 | 10.5 | 9.4 |
| Sea temperature | Not verified | Not verified | Not verified |
Read the three columns across and November is the wet one. It carries 3.86 inches against October’s 3.33 and December’s 2.70, and it records the most wet days of the trio at 10.5. On temperature it sits neatly in the middle, 4.7°F below October by day and 3.1°F above December, with the same ordering overnight.
Shift four weeks earlier and you buy warmth and a longer afternoon, and you give up the quiet: October is still the tail of the season. Shift four weeks later and December hands back more than an inch of rain and 1.1 fewer wet days, at the cost of 3.1°F by day and a darker afternoon. For the wider Portuguese calendar behind all of this, our best-time guide runs all twelve months.
Is November a good time to visit Óbidos?
Yes, if you are coming to walk. A walled town of this size is a two-mile day whether you plan it or not, and 62.6°F with a shell is close to ideal for that. No, if the trip has water in it, or if a fixed outdoor schedule is non-negotiable: 10.5 wet days means a one-third chance any given morning starts damp, and 3.2 days will be properly wet. Families on a tight itinerary should assume one washout in three days.
If that risk reads badly, move earlier rather than later. October keeps 67.3°F afternoons and 9.2 wet days, which is the better bet for a trip built around being outside. December is drier in total at 2.70 inches but colder at 59.5°F, and its afternoons end sooner still. Late spring sits outside our figures here, and the country calendar handles it.
One thing November owns among these three: it is the last month whose average afternoon still reads above 60°F, with the lanes already emptying at 5:24 pm.
The last word
Book the room inside the walls first and let the rest follow, because that single choice decides whether you see Óbidos at eight in the morning or at eleven with everybody else. One figure we have kept back: November’s 3.86 inches falls over 10.5 wet days, roughly 0.37 inch per wet day, against 0.29 for December. The rain here arrives in heavier helpings than the totals suggest, so bring the shell rather than the umbrella, and keep the wall circuit for the first dry hour of the day.
