June in Funchal reads 74.7°F by day and 64.8°F at night, and the rain gauge collects less than a third of an inch across the whole month. That is the south coast, measured 58 meters above the water by a thermometer that has been sitting there for decades. It is also the month most people picture when they picture Madeira: warm terraces at noon, a fleece on the ridge, light that hangs on past nine.
What June does not hand you is July’s water. The surface off the island averages 71.6°F, some 3.4°F under next month, and since January 1, 2026 every classified levada on Madeira carries an access fee and a booked entry slot. Both belong in the plan before the flights do.

A word on scope first. Madeira’s climate figures come from IPMA station 522, in Funchal, 58 meters above the south coast. The island’s high ground runs colder and far wetter than that, and the north coast keeps weather of its own, so a coastal reading makes a poor guide to a mountain trail. The 1991–2020 normals published by IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, put June in Funchal at an average high of 74.7°F (23.7°C), an average low of 64.8°F (18.2°C), and 0.31 inches of precipitation for the month. Station 522 is a real instrument at 58 meters, not a model grid cell, and the distinction earns its keep on an island shaped like this one. A reanalysis square averages a 6,000-foot ridge with a marina and hands you a temperature nobody stands in.
One day in an average June records 1 mm (0.04 inch) or more, and 0.2 of a day reaches 10 mm (0.39 inch). Those are IPMA’s own thresholds, not the 0.10-inch mark that American tables count, so the two sets of rain days cannot be swapped. On the ground it means the month’s rain arrives as a single damp morning, or as nothing at all. Cloud parked on the north side while the Funchal seafront stays bright is ordinary June behavior, not a bad day.
Roughly 10°F separates the average day from the average night. On the coast that buys a shirt at noon and a light layer after dinner. Higher up it buys something else, since the ridges run colder than a 58-meter station, and cloud can sit on them while the coast holds its 74.7°F. The June bag that works carries a fleece, a rain shell and shoes with grip for wet basalt, whatever the coastal forecast promised at breakfast.
June 15 delivers 14 hours 20 minutes of daylight: sunrise at 6:58 a.m. and sunset at 9:18 p.m. local time, converted from 05:58 and 20:18 UTC. Trail entry slots run in 30-minute steps from sunrise to sunset, so a June day simply contains more of them than a December one. Dinner at eight is still a daylight dinner, and the last hour of light lands well after the ticket offices close.
Can you swim in Madeira in June? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Open-Meteo’s marine series puts the sea surface off Madeira at 71.6°F (22°C) in June, averaged across 2015 to 2024. Read the fine print with us: that number is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day. It sits a shade above what a full 24-hour average would show, so the water you meet at eight in the morning is cooler than the headline.
For an adult who walks in without negotiating, 71.6°F is a genuine swim: bracing for twenty seconds, comfortable after two minutes, fine for half an hour. For small children and for anyone snorkeling slowly, it is the temperature at which a thin wetsuit stops being fussy. Compare it with July’s 75.0°F and May’s 69.9°F and the shape of the season is plain. June is the month the water becomes an activity rather than a dare.
Wind and swell are the gap in our sourced set: we hold no June figures for either off Madeira, and we will not invent them. The Atlantic here builds a swell in any month, entry at many spots is over rock or ladder rather than sand, and lifeguard flags plus the day’s marine forecast beat a monthly average every time.
How busy is Madeira in June? Crowds, the trail fee and the Funchal tourist tax
We hold no month-by-month lodging price index for Madeira, and inventing one would be guessing at your expense. What can be priced is what the island itself charges a June visitor, and one of those charges is brand new. Since January 1, 2026 every classified walking trail, meaning every PR-numbered levada and vereda, carries an access fee and a compulsory booking. That single rule reorders more June trips than any hotel rate.
Booking happens online only, through SIMplifica, the Regional Government’s digital services portal, and it applies to individuals, to groups and to anyone walking with a tourism company alike. Slots come in 30-minute steps between sunrise and sunset. Two other tickets behave in opposite ways: the Funchal cable car e-ticket stays valid for 60 days after purchase, so buy it at home, while the Monte wicker sledges cannot be reserved at all, being sold on site for the same day only.
Funchal also levies a Taxa Municipal Turística of EUR 2 per person per night, capped at 7 consecutive nights, so EUR 14 per guest at most. It covers every paid overnight stay in the municipality whatever the booking channel, and it starts again after an interrupted stay. Children of 12 and under are exempt on production of an ID, as are visitors with a disability of 60 percent or more and residents of the Autonomous Region on proof of tax address. Put it in the budget beside your other Portugal trip costs.
The one place where spending differently changes the month is the trail gate. Access costs EUR 4.50 per person for the general public and for visitors traveling with a tourism company that holds no protocol with the IFCN, and EUR 3 with a company that does. The gap in money is trivial. The gap in effort is not, because the company with the protocol carries the SIMplifica booking, and a week with four PR walks in it means four slot times you no longer have to hit yourself.
Things to do in Madeira in June
June buys dry ground, and dry ground is what a levada plan runs on: 0.31 inches and a single wet day, against May’s 1.07 inches and 3.3 days. The same dryness keeps the three-person sledge in service, since it does not go out in rain or on wet ground. Trails are classified and opened one by one. On September 8, 2026 the open list showed PR1 Vereda do Areeiro, PR 1.2 Vereda do Pico Ruivo, PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes, PR 6.1 Levada do Risco and PR 3.1 Caminho Real do Monte, with PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada and PR 4 Levada do Barreiro restricted.
The Funchal to Monte cable car runs 08:45 to 17:45 every day of the year except Christmas, at EUR 22 return or EUR 16 one way, free to age 6 and half fare from 7 to 14. At the top station, the Monte Palace Tropical Garden opens 09:00 to 19:00 from April through September and charges EUR 18 for adults, children up to 14 free with an adult, its sculpture museum closing at 17:00. Below it the carros de cesto, steered by two carreiros in white, run Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 18:00, at EUR 30, EUR 40 and EUR 60 for one, two or three riders.
Free in June is mostly light and geography. The EUR 4.50 fee attaches to classified PR trails only, so a coastal promenade or an unnumbered path costs nothing, and sunset at 9:18 p.m. adds a full free hour after the gates shut at 18:00 or 19:00. Children ride the cable car free to age 6 and enter the Monte Palace garden free to 14 alongside an adult. Residents of the Autonomous Region walk the classified trails without paying: visitors pay, and that is why two prices appear at the gate.
Madeira in June: a two-day itinerary
Day one goes uphill early. Book the SIMplifica slot before you fly and take one of the first half-hours after the 6:58 a.m. sunrise for PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes, which puts you in the laurel section while the stone is still cold. Back on the coast by one, a 74.7°F average makes lunch an outdoor question. Save the swim for four in the afternoon rather than nine in the morning, since 71.6°F is a mean of daily maxima and the sea takes the day to get there. Light holds to 9:18 p.m., so the evening walk is unhurried.
Day two opens at the cable car’s 08:45 start, EUR 16 one way up to Monte, then the Monte Palace garden from 09:00, with its 70,000 square meters of planting and the sculpture museum cleared before the 17:00 close. Sledge tickets are same day and on site, EUR 40 for two. If cloud rolls over from the north, the sledge is the first thing to go, because no three-person ride runs on wet ground. The garden absorbs a wet morning; the Botanical Garden at Bom Sucesso, on Caminho do Meio, takes the other half of the day.

Across the three months the thermometer climbs and the rain collapses. May averages a 71.6°F high, June 74.7°F, July 77.7°F, with the nights tracking at 61.2°F, 64.8°F and 67.5°F. Rainfall falls from 1.07 inches over 3.3 wet days in May to 0.31 inches over one day in June, then to 0.07 inches and 0.3 of a day in July. Shift four weeks later and you gain 3°F in the air, 3.4°F in the water and a month that barely rains at all. You give up the cool walking, since 77.7°F on a south-facing trail at midday is a different kind of exercise. Is June a good time to visit Madeira?
For walkers, June is a yes and close to the best month on this evidence: one rain day, 74.7°F, and 14 hours 20 minutes of daylight to spread the booked slots across. For a family whose week stands or falls on swimming, it is a soft no. A sea of 71.6°F is swimmable without being warm, and by day three the hotel pool tends to win the argument.
If the water is the whole point, move to July and take 75.0°F, 0.07 inches of rain and 77.7°F days. If greener hillsides and a quieter island matter more than water temperature, May offers 69.9°F and 1.07 inches, and the trail fee and the SIMplifica booking apply identically in every month of 2026. No other month pairs this much light with this little heat: July has the same long evenings and 3°F more on the thermometer, May has June’s comfort and three times the wet days.
The last word
Book the trail slot first and the rest of June arranges itself around it. The cable car ticket can sit in your inbox for 60 days, the sledge cannot be reserved at all, and the Botanical Garden at Bom Sucesso, more than 2,000 exotic species on Caminho do Meio, is the fallback nobody plans and half of Funchal uses when the north side clouds over. The month asks for little else: a fleece for the ridge, EUR 4.50 at the gate, and the discipline to be walking at seven while the levada is still cold.
