Lisbon in June: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and What’s Open

Mid-June afternoons in Lisbon settle around 79.0°F, and the 15th of the month hands over 14 hours 55 minutes of daylight, the sun up at 6:09 am and down at 9:04 pm on local clocks. Rain has largely left: 0.53 inches for the whole month, against 2.00 inches in May. The Atlantic is the laggard, still catching up at 66.8°F.

What the month asks in return is planning. Jerónimos Monastery states on its own visitor page that tickets frequently sell out and cannot then be bought on the day, and the cloister shuts completely on June 13, Lisbon’s municipal holiday for Santo António. Beds, trains to the coast and the good dinner tables all move on the same curve into summer.

Every figure here comes from one of three places, and they are not equal. The temperature and rain normals are IPMA’s 1991–2020 series for station 579, Lisboa/Gago Coutinho, a real thermometer 103.9 m above sea level. The water figure comes from a marine model series, not from a buoy. Fares are the published 2026 tariffs. Anything that is our own guess carries (est.).

Lisbon weather in June: average highs, lows and rain days

IPMA, the national weather service, puts June’s average high at 79.0°F and the average low at 61.7°F, with 0.53 inches of precipitation across the month. Those are 1991–2020 normals from one station, 579 Lisboa/Gago Coutinho, and a reading taken at 103.9 m differs from a reanalysis grid cell averaged over the whole city and its river. When another site quotes Lisbon a degree or two off, that difference is usually the reason.

Two days in an average June record 1 mm (0.04 inch) or more, and 0.4 of a day reaches 10 mm (0.39 inch). One caution about those counts: IPMA measures against the 1 mm threshold while most US tables count days at 0.10 inch, so the two are not interchangeable. In practice a June rain day here usually means one shower that passes; the month’s entire 0.53 inches would fit in a coffee cup.

The gap between those two normals is 17.3°F, and it lands after dark. A day peaking near 79°F falls back toward 62°F before dawn, which argues for one long-sleeve layer for a 10 pm viewpoint and nothing heavier. Shade is scarce on the Belém waterfront and on the castle hill, so a hat does more work than a jacket. Our packing guide handles the rest of the country.

On June 15 the sun rises at 05:09 UTC and sets at 20:04 UTC, which is 6:09 am and 9:04 pm in Lisbon: 14 hours 55 minutes of usable light, within days of the annual maximum. The monuments close long before the light does. Jerónimos takes its last entry at 17:00 and the Gulbenkian shuts at 18:00, so the final four hours of daylight belong to walking, the river and dinner outdoors.

Can you swim in Lisbon in June? Sea temperature at 66.8°F

The sea surface off Lisbon averages 66.8°F in June. That number is the mean of daily maxima over 2015–2024 in Open-Meteo’s marine series, so read it as the warmest point of a typical day, a shade above what a 24-hour average would return. Morning water is cooler than the figure suggests, and the figure is already the optimistic end.

66.8°F is swimmable and it is not warm. The first thirty seconds will argue, a real swim follows, and children come out sooner than the beach photos imply. We would still budget for a wetsuit rental at the surf breaks up the coast, and for shorter water sessions than an Algarve trip would give you: Cascais and Ericeira both rent them by the half day.

On wind and swell we have temperature and nothing else. Our marine series carries sea surface values for June and no wave or wind normals for this stretch of coast, so we will not characterize the swell from data we do not hold. One official hint sits on land: Belém Tower states that it can close whenever exposure to the weather compromises visitor safety, which tells you what the mouth of the Tagus does on a blustery afternoon.

How busy is Lisbon in June? Crowds, booking lead time and the tourist tax

By June the climate has nearly finished converging on July: 0.53 inches of rain against July’s 0.11, a sea at 66.8°F against 66.7°F, highs 3.9°F apart. Demand converges with it, and June sits on the steep part of the ramp rather than the plateau. No price index appears here, because we hold no primary series for Lisbon room rates that we would put a number to.

That puts the weight on the booking calendar. Jerónimos says its tickets frequently sell out and cannot be bought on the day of the visit, and the monument provides no audio guides, so the online slot is effectively the whole transaction. We buy monument entries and any Sintra or Cascais rail day four to six weeks out (est.), and the beds well before that.

Lisbon also charges a municipal tourist tax per night on top of the room rate. We could not read the amount on a primary source: the city’s information portal returns a 403 to automated reading, and Diário da República demands JavaScript. So no figure is served, only the warning that the line exists. Ask the property to state the per-night amount in writing, and see what a Portugal trip costs for the surrounding arithmetic.

The one line where paying more buys something specific to June is the time of day. The Oceanário charges adults EUR 29 for a 10:00 to 11:30 entry, EUR 27 from 12:00 to 15:30, EUR 25 from 16:00 to 18:30, with 5 percent off online: the expensive slot is the cool one. Transport runs the other way. A tram fare paid to the driver is EUR 3.30, against EUR 1.90 loaded onto a navegante card that itself costs EUR 0.50.

Things to do in Lisbon in June: Jerónimos, Belém Tower and what’s free

What June adds is hours. With 14 hours 55 minutes of light and two rain days, one day holds a monument at opening, a swim in the afternoon and a viewpoint at 9 pm. May cannot promise that combination: 5.7 rain days and a sea at 63.1°F. The trains to the coast run all year, so the month is not buying access. It is buying the second half of the day.

The Belém pair prices out cleanly. The Jerónimos cloister is EUR 18, open Tuesday to Sunday 09:30 to 17:30 with last entry at 17:00, and the church keeps separate hours: Tuesday to Saturday 10:30 to 17:00, Sundays and religious holidays 14:00 to 17:00. Belém Tower is EUR 15. Both halve the fare for over-65s, for ages 13 to 24 and on a family ticket, and children up to 12 enter the monastery free. Mondays are closed, and so is June 13.

Free in June is narrower than the internet claims. Several guides announce a free Sunday morning at Jerónimos until 14:00; the monument’s own list grants that free admission under the Acesso 52 scheme to Portuguese nationals and residents, on any day, and a visitor from the US pays the full EUR 18. The Gulbenkian’s two free windows are gated too: Sundays from 14:00 for under-18s and certain card holders, Saturdays 18:00 to 21:00 for under-30s carrying the free Cartão Gulbenkian. The miradouros stay free, and in June they stay useful until 9 pm.

Lisbon in June: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on shade and light. Be at the Jerónimos cloister for the 09:30 opening on a slot bought online, cross to Belém Tower (EUR 15) before noon, then eat late and sitting down. Give the hottest stretch to the Gulbenkian, EUR 18 all inclusive or EUR 12 for the CAM alone, open 10:00 to 18:00 and closed Tuesdays. Out again at 7 pm for the viewpoint circuit, dinner at 8:30, and the plates are cleared while it is still daylight.

Day two heads for water. Alfama and the castle hill while the stone is cool, then a train to Cascais on the 24-hour ticket that includes the CP suburban lines, EUR 11.40, for the 66.8°F swim. If the sky turns, the Oceanário absorbs the afternoon at EUR 25 from 16:00, last entry 19:00, with a stated visit of 90 minutes to two hours. Belém Tower can shut in rough weather, so on a windy day it moves to the back of the list.

Lisbon in June vs May and July

Set side by side, June is the pivot of the three. Highs step up 73.0°F, 79.0°F, 82.9°F. Rain collapses across the same three steps, 2.00 inches to 0.53 to 0.11, with rain days at 5.7, 2.0 and 0.4. The sea does something different: 63.1°F, then 66.8°F, then 66.7°F, so the water stops improving the moment June ends.

Shifting four weeks is a genuine trade. Back to May and you gain cooler walking and calmer monuments, while accepting nearly four times the rain and water 3.7°F colder, as our May page sets out. Forward to July and you gain the driest month on the record, lose the last of the shoulder-season quiet, and get nothing at the beach: the sea reads 0.1°F cooler than June.

Is June a good time to visit Lisbon?

Yes for most travelers, and for reasons you can check. A trip built on walking, monuments, viewpoints and eating outdoors after 9 pm gets 79°F days, two rain days and 14 hours 55 minutes of light. A trip built on long swims runs into the Atlantic: 66.8°F in June, 66.7°F in July, which means waiting a month buys nothing at all in the water.

When the answer comes back no, crowds or heat are usually behind it, and May is the better correction than July. You get 73.0°F highs and quieter ticket lines, and you pay in 5.7 rain days and 2.00 inches. Anyone who needs a guaranteed dry fortnight should read July’s 0.11 inches against its 82.9°F, or start from the country-wide month-by-month verdict.

One thing June holds alone: the year’s longest days over a city that has already dried out, 14 hours 55 minutes of light on the 15th with monthly rain down to half an inch.

The last word

Settle the monument slots first and June forgives the rest. The EUR 18 cloister sells out, it does not sell at the door, Mondays close it and June 13 closes it: those four facts shape a two-day visit more than any forecast will. Then buy the EUR 10.35 version of the 24-hour ticket, the one that adds the Cacilhas ferry, and spend part of that 9 pm light on the far bank, looking back at the hills you climbed all day.
