TAVIRA · NOVEMBER · 37.1° N
Tavira in November averages 67.3°F by day and 53.4°F at night, rain falls on 6.6 days, and the sea is still at 65.3°F. That combination makes a walking month with a swimming option attached, rather than a beach month with walks in it.
The trade is light. Sunset on November 15 comes at 5:23 p.m. local time, so the useful afternoon runs about four hours after lunch, and dinner happens in the dark. Book the flight to Faro on that number as much as on the temperature. Where to sleep and what the coast does the other eleven months belong to our Tavira guide and the Algarve guide.

Tavira weather in November: average highs, lows and rain days

The national weather service, IPMA, puts the November average high at 67.3°F and the average low at 53.4°F, with 2.97 inches of rain over the month. Those are 1991-2020 normals from station 554 at Faro, a real thermometer 5.0 meters above sea level, a short drive west of Tavira on the same sheltered eastern stretch. Every figure here describes that coastal strip and nothing else: inland high ground runs colder and a good deal wetter, so nobody should pack for a hill walk on a sea-level reading.
Rain reaches 0.04 inch or more on 6.6 days in an average November, roughly one day in five, leaving about 23 days of the month with nothing measurable. Of those wet days, 2.7 deliver 0.39 inch or more, so two or three real soakings. Watch the arithmetic before comparing tables: IPMA counts from 1 mm while American monthly summaries usually count from 0.10 inch, and the two rain-day totals are not interchangeable.
Between the two air figures sits a 13.9°F spread, and it lands at the wrong end of the day for eating outside. Midday in the high sixties wants a shirt. Overnight at 53.4°F wants a real jacket, not a windbreaker over a t-shirt. Two layers, closed shoes and something waterproof for the 6.6 days cover the whole month, and our packing guide has the rest of the list.
On November 15 the sun rises at 7:09 a.m. and sets at 5:23 p.m. local time, Portugal running on UTC through the winter, for 10 hours 14 minutes of daylight. Early risers get the good light over the river. Everyone else should note that the beach hour closes before 5 p.m., which pushes the shape of the day forward: island and water in the middle, town and food after dark.
Can you swim in Tavira in November? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Sea surface off Tavira averages 65.3°F in November. That number comes from the Open-Meteo marine model over 2015-2024, and it is the mean of daily maxima, so it sits a shade warmer than a 24-hour average would. Read it as the top of the day’s water, not the water at 8 a.m.
At 65.3°F the Atlantic here is swimmable and it is not warm. Most people get in fast, swim briefly and come out pleased with themselves. Air at 67.3°F means you dry off in a chill rather than a bake, so a towel plus a dry second layer matters more in November than a beach umbrella does in July. Anyone planning long sessions in the water should bring a shorty wetsuit instead of assuming one can be rented off-season.
We could not verify November wind or swell statistics for this stretch of coast, so we give no figures for either. What is geography rather than forecast: Tavira faces the channel and the barrier islands of the Ria Formosa, not open ocean, and the water inside the lagoon behaves differently from the Atlantic beyond the sandbar. Surf belongs to the other end of the region, which the Sagres guide covers.
How busy is Tavira in November? Crowds and prices
November falls outside the Algarve’s summer season, and that much is calendar rather than opinion. A price ranking is a different claim: we found no monthly occupancy series and no room-rate series for Tavira, so we crown no month cheapest or dearest. What the normals do say is that the thing summer visitors come for has gone. A 65.3°F sea and a 5:23 p.m. sunset are not what fills a beach town.
Without rate data we will not tell you to book eleven weeks ahead. Two bookings are still worth making early: the car, because an eastern Algarve trip without one shrinks to what the bus reaches, and the room, because the good off-season rentals in the old town are few. Almost everyone arrives through Faro airport, and our flights guide handles the routes from the US.
We could not verify a municipal tourist tax for Tavira, so we quote no per-night amount here. Ask the property what it adds at check-in and get the answer in writing with the reservation, along with whether the total you see online already includes it.
One line of the budget genuinely changes the month, and it is heating. With overnight lows averaging 53.4°F and 2.97 inches of rain spread across 6.6 days, a whitewashed apartment built for August evenings turns into a cold living room by 9 p.m. Rank a working heater, and a covered terrace, above a sea view. Everything else scales the way it does in any other month.
Things to do in Tavira in November

Midday at 67.3°F is the month’s practical advantage: you can walk the salt pans, the riverfront and the old streets in the middle of the day without planning around heat. Birding over the lagoon works in the same window, in clear autumn air. Nothing about summer allows an unhurried noon on open ground with no shade.
The targets are short and specific. Ilha de Tavira sits offshore, reached by ferry from the town quay or from Quatro Águas. Praia do Barril lies along the same sandbar, with its anchor cemetery in the dunes, approached from Pedras d’el Rei. In town: the old bridge over the Gilão, the castle garden above the lanes, Igreja de Santa Maria do Castelo and the riverside market. We could not verify November ferry times, fares or winter opening hours, so we quote none. Ask at the quay the morning you go.
The sandbar does not change with the season, the air around it does. In November the water off the island averages 65.3°F against air at 67.3, so the sea and the beach read as the same temperature and a swim costs you nothing in comfort. By December the water is 63.4 and the air 62.8, and the same walk turns into a coat-and-flask outing.
Walking costs nothing, and November supplies 10 hours 14 minutes of it on the 15th: the tracks between the salt pans east of town, the river path, the climb to the castle garden. We could not verify admission prices for the church or the castle, so we give none of those either.
Tavira in November: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts with light at 7:09 a.m. Take the market and the old town early, cross the bridge over the Gilão, then be on a late-morning ferry to Ilha de Tavira with lunch on the island. Keep 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. for the beach and the water, the warmest hours of a 67.3°F day. Be back on the mainland before the 5:23 p.m. sunset, and plan dinner in town knowing it happens in the dark and at around 53.4°F.
Day two goes east: the salt pans in the morning for birds and flat light, Santa Luzia for lunch, Praia do Barril in the afternoon. If the day turns out to be one of the 6.6 wet ones, flip it. The churches, the castle garden and the covered market sit within ten minutes of each other on foot, and one of the 2.7 days that bring 0.39 inch or more is not a day to spend on a sandbar with no shelter.
Tavira in November vs October and December
| Measure | October | November | December |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 73.9°F | 67.3°F | 62.8°F |
| Average low | 60.4°F | 53.4°F | 49.5°F |
| Precipitation | 2.20 in | 2.97 in | 3.54 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 6.0 | 6.6 | 7.0 |
| Sea surface | 67.3°F | 65.3°F | 63.4°F |
October runs 73.9°F by day and 60.4°F at night, with 2.20 inches of rain over 6.0 wet days. November takes the day down to 67.3 and the night to 53.4, adds 0.77 inch of rain and 0.6 of a wet day, and cools the water by 2.0°F. December goes further, to 62.8 and 49.5, with 3.54 inches over 7.0 days. The three air columns are IPMA normals for the same station and period; the three sea figures come from the marine model.
Move four weeks earlier and you buy 6.6°F of daytime warmth, 7.0°F at night and a 67.3°F sea, at the cost of a busier town we cannot price for you. Move four weeks later and you lose 4.5°F of day, take on 0.57 inch more rain, and swim at 63.4°F if at all. For the twelve-month view across the country, our best-time guide ranks the whole calendar.
Is November a good time to visit Tavira?
Yes if you came to walk, eat and look at birds. Twenty-three dry days, afternoons at 67.3°F and an old town you can cross in fifteen minutes make a strong two or three nights. No if the trip is built on water: a 65.3°F sea and a beach hour that ends at 4:30 p.m. will disappoint anyone who pictured the Algarve of the brochures.
If that second description fits, take October instead. The sea holds 67.3°F, days average 73.9, rain still only reaches 0.04 inch on 6.0 days, and sunset comes late enough for a swim after lunch and a drink outdoors afterward. The penalty is company, and a warmer town.
What no other month here offers is the overlap: air and water within 2.0°F of each other, both in the sixties, with rain on fewer than seven days.
The last word
Decide this one on light, not on rain. November records only 0.6 of a wet day more than October, so the weather is barely a different animal, but the sun goes down at 5:23 p.m. and takes the afternoon with it. Get up for the 7:09 a.m. light, put the island in the middle of the day, and book a room with a heater in it. The Gilão at dusk does the rest without charging you for it.
