Pena Palace in March: Weather, Rain Days and How It Compares to February and April

You have already picked Pena. What is left is the date. March brings 65.1°F afternoons, 50.5°F nights and 2.63 inches of rain to the valley below the hill, and it brings something July cannot: a climb from the terraces up through the park that does not leave you wrung out at the top.

It also brings the hill’s own weather, and that changes how you read every number that follows. The normals below are measured at Lisbon’s airport, about 25 km away and roughly 400 meters lower than the palace. Pena stands in the cloud the Sintra ridge manufactures: colder, wetter and mistier than the station that supplies the figures.

March hands you 65.1°F afternoons and about 12 hours of daylight for the walk up to Cruz Alta, at the price of 7.2 wet days and a ridge that makes its own cloud.

Go for: the full park circuit to Cruz Alta in air that averages 65.1°F, and interiors you enter by choice rather than to escape heat.

Think twice before: building one fixed Sintra day around the terrace view. The valley reads 2.63 inches, and the ridge above it runs colder, wetter and mistier.

The date is what we handle: how March reads on the thermometer, what it costs you in wet mornings, and whether February or April would serve you better. For the visit itself, the other estates and the half-day question, our Sintra guide does that work, and the twelve-month view of Portugal sets the wider calendar.

Every figure here comes from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, and from one instrument: station 579 at Lisboa Gago Coutinho, a real thermometer at 103.9 meters rather than a model grid cell. Its 1991-2020 March normals read 65.1°F by day, 50.5°F at night and 2.63 inches of rain. The geography is the catch. That station sits about 25 km from Sintra and roughly 400 meters lower, and the hill above the town is colder, wetter and mistier than anything the airport records.

IPMA counts 7.2 March days with at least 0.04 inch of rain and 2.3 days with 0.39 inch or more. Over a week in the region that works out to roughly one wet day in four, with a proper soaking arriving about twice in the month. Watch the threshold: American tables usually start counting at 0.10 inch, so these counts are not interchangeable with the ones you read at home. Put the palace interiors on the morning that looks worst and keep the park for the clear window.

Between 65.1°F and 50.5°F there are 14.6°F, and you feel all of them on a ridge several hundred meters above the coastal plain. A packable rain shell, one warm mid-layer and shoes with grip cover the month. Sintra’s cobbles and the park’s dirt paths hold water for hours after a band passes, long after the sky has gone blue again. Our packing guide has the full list.

On March 15 the sun rises at 6:45 a.m. and sets at 6:45 p.m. local time, about 12 hours of daylight. That is enough for a full day on foot with something in reserve: a four o’clock arrival at the castle wall still has usable light, and the walk back down into the old town does not need a flashlight. Train times and the bus up the hill sit in our getting-around guide.

How warm is Pena Palace in March?

The month averages 65.1°F at its warmest hour and 50.5°F at its coldest, a spread of 14.6°F between mid-afternoon and the hour before dawn. Both are month averages rather than forecasts: individual March days run above and below, and a single clear afternoon can sit well past the normal while the one after it does not reach it.

In practice you leave the hotel in a fleece and finish the day carrying it. Mornings on the terraces, especially before the sun works round to them, are jacket weather. By two in the afternoon the climb through the park has you in one layer, and the wind along the top is what decides whether the second layer goes back on at Cruz Alta.

We found no count of nights at or below freezing in the IPMA March normals we read, and a monthly average low of 50.5°F sits a long way above it, so we give no frost figure. The ridge is the honest unknown: altitude and standing cloud make it cooler and damper than the valley station at both ends of the day, and IPMA’s own note says so without putting a number on the gap.

How busy is Pena Palace in March? Crowds, booking and lodging tax

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Sintra, so we crown no month cheap and none expensive. What can be said is the shape of the calendar: March sits between the winter quiet and the spring travel season, ahead of the summer months. Sintra’s visitors arrive largely from Lisbon, so a Tuesday on the hill is a different afternoon from a Saturday, and that is our judgment rather than a counted figure.

Buy the palace ticket before you travel rather than at the gate, and settle the bed first if you want to sleep in Sintra itself instead of commuting up from Lisbon each morning. We could not verify Pena’s March ticket price or its March opening hours, so we quote neither: Parques de Sintra publishes both. Two to three weeks of lead time is our working habit for a March visit (est.), not a number we can source.

We could not verify Sintra’s municipal lodging tax, so we give no rate and no per-night amount. What we have priced nationally sits in our Portugal trip-cost guide, and the tax, where it applies, is charged at check-in rather than folded into the rate you prepaid.

One upgrade changes this month more than any other: flexibility. With 7.2 wet days on the March average and 2.3 of them heavy, a refundable room and a ticket date you can move let you spend the clear morning on the terraces rather than the one the itinerary assigned. That is worth more in March than a better view from the hotel window.

Things to do at Pena Palace in March: the park, Cruz Alta and the Chalet of the Countess of Edla

The park paths climb toward Cruz Alta · Illustration

March gives you the climb. The paths rise from the palace terraces through the woods to Cruz Alta, the high point of the Sintra ridge, and doing that walk when the afternoon averages 65.1°F is a different exercise from doing it in August. The interiors become a choice rather than a refuge, which is the small luxury of a cool month: you go inside because the rooms are worth an hour, not because the courtyard has become unbearable.

Names worth putting on the day: the Park of Pena with its Valley of the Lakes and the Queen’s Fern Valley, the Chalet and Garden of the Countess of Edla on the park’s western side, Cruz Alta at the summit, and the Moorish Castle’s wall along the neighboring crest. Down in the valley sit Quinta da Regaleira and the Sintra National Palace. We could not verify March tariffs or hours for any of them, so we quote none.

Stone and planting barely notice the calendar. Air does, and that is what makes the season here. A full circuit of the park is comfortable in one mid-layer at 65.1°F, while the same loop in high summer is done before ten or not at all. The volatile item is the terrace view: the ridge builds cloud the valley station never records, and a 2.63-inch month keeps feeding it.

We could not verify any free-admission day at Pena in March, so we promise none. What costs nothing is the approach: the walk up through the old town, the Volta do Duche path along the wall, the bends in the road where the palace shows itself above the treetops, and the town’s own streets on a wet afternoon when the ridge is socked in anyway.

Pena Palace in March: a two-day plan for Sintra

Day one, clear sky: early train from Lisbon, on the hill by mid-morning, palace interiors first while the air is still closer to the night’s 50.5°F than to the afternoon’s 65.1°F. Out onto the terraces around eleven, then into the park for the walk to Cruz Alta through the warmest hours. Lunch down in the historic center. The Moorish Castle wall late in the day, with light holding until 6:45 p.m. on March 15.

Day two works the valley floor: Quinta da Regaleira in the morning, the National Palace in town, Monserrate if the legs agree. If the weather turns, invert the order and take the interiors while the band passes, then go back up once the ridge clears. On one of the month’s 2.3 heavy days, the better call is a train back to Lisbon and an indoor afternoon there, holding Pena for the next clear window.

Pena Palace in March vs February and April

Measure February March April
Average high 60.3°F 65.1°F 67.8°F
Average low 47.1°F 50.5°F 53.2°F
Precipitation 2.80 in 2.63 in 2.50 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 7.8 7.2 7.7

February runs 60.3°F by day and 47.1°F at night, with 2.80 inches of rain across 7.8 wet days. March lifts the afternoon by 4.8°F and trims the total to 2.63 inches over 7.2 days. April adds another 2.7°F to the afternoon and drops to 2.50 inches, yet spreads that rain over 7.7 days, half a day more than March.

Move four weeks later and you gain 2.7°F of afternoon, 2.7°F of night and longer light at both ends. You give up the calmer hill, since April runs into the spring season, and you accept rain on more days even though it totals less. Move four weeks earlier and February takes back 4.8°F of afternoon warmth and delivers the wettest total of the three at 2.80 inches, in exchange for the quietest terraces. Our February page has that side in full.

Is March a good time to visit Pena Palace?

Yes, if you are coming to walk. Afternoons at 65.1°F, about 12 hours of daylight and 7.2 wet days out of 31 give the park circuit a good hit rate, and the interiors are pleasant rather than a heat shelter. No, if the trip allows one fixed Sintra day and the terrace panorama is the whole reason you are going. On a ridge that builds its own cloud, a single attempt in March is a bet.

If that describes your trip, take April instead. It adds 2.7°F to the afternoon and cuts the monthly total to 2.50 inches, with more light on both sides of the day. The trade is real: 7.7 wet days rather than 7.2, so the interruptions come slightly more often even as they deliver less water, and the hill sits closer to the spring season on the calendar.

What March holds over both neighbors is narrow and useful: the fewest wet days of the three at 7.2, with afternoons already 4.8°F warmer than February’s.

The last word

Book a bed you can move, then go up on the first clear morning rather than the one the itinerary picked. And keep the size of the correction in mind while you read the forecast: the thermometer behind every figure here stands at 103.9 meters, at an airport 25 km from a palace several hundred meters higher, sitting in cloud of its own making. March hands you about 12 hours of daylight to catch the hour the ridge comes clear, and that is usually enough.
