BRAGA · FEBRUARY · IPMA 1991-2020
Braga sits inland in the Minho, and its February is a month of easing rain rather than arriving spring. The official thirty-year normals put the average afternoon at 59.9°F and the average night at 38.1°F, with 4.37 inches of precipitation spread over 9.6 wet days. That is drier than January by a wide margin and cooler than March by a clear one.
For a US traveler the practical shape is short: two nights in the city, three if Guimarães joins the trip, with most flights landing at Porto’s airport and the last leg done by train or rental car. If you are still choosing a date rather than a city, our month-by-month verdict for Portugal takes the wider view, and the northern region guide covers what surrounds Braga all year.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · BRAGA · FEBRUARY
February gives Braga cool, workable afternoons and 2.70 inches less rain than January, at the price of nights near freezing and only ten and a half hours of light.
IPMA 1991-2020 · STATION 622 BRAGA MERELIM · 68.4 M · NO PRICE SERIES VERIFIED
Go for: afternoons around 59.9°F, a rain total 2.70 inches below January’s, and the sanctuary stairway climbed in cool air.
Think twice before: counting on dry weather. 9.6 February days record 0.04 in or more, and 4.3 of them reach 0.39 in or more.

Every figure here comes from IPMA station 622 at Braga Merelim, a real thermometer on flat ground at 68.4 m, not a model grid cell. It describes Braga and only Braga. The high ground east of the city runs colder and far wetter, and the coast keeps its own weather, so the normals below are the wrong reading to pack a mountain trail by.
Braga weather in February: average highs, lows and rain days
| February in Braga | 1991-2020 normal |
|---|---|
| Average high | 59.9°F (15.5°C) |
| Average low | 38.1°F (3.4°C) |
| Day-night spread | 21.8°F |
| Precipitation | 4.37 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 9.6 |
| Days with 0.39 in or more | 4.3 |
| Daylight on February 15 | 10 h 40 min |
IPMA, Portugal’s national sea and atmosphere institute, publishes the 1991-2020 normals for this station, and February’s precipitation total there is 4.37 inches. Thirty years of readings describe the typical February rather than the one you will get: a single blocked, wet week can carry most of that total, and a dry spell can leave the month looking nothing like the table.
Measurable rain falls on 9.6 days, roughly one February day in three, and 4.3 days bring 0.39 inch or more, about one day in seven. Those thresholds are IPMA’s own (1 mm and 10 mm), not the 0.10-inch line most US tables use, so the counts do not swap with a NOAA table for your home town. In planning terms, two days in three are workable outdoors and one day in the week wants an indoor plan built in advance.
The gap between the average low and the average high is 21.8°F, which is a lot to cover with one jacket. A warm layer for the morning, something lighter underneath for the mid-afternoon, and a hood rather than an umbrella on a hillside covers most of it. Our Portugal packing guide has the full list, including the shoe question that granite streets settle for you.
On February 15 the sun rises at 7:27 am and sets at 6:07 pm, giving 10 hours 40 minutes of daylight. Portugal keeps UTC through the winter, so those are the clock times on your phone. Light, not warmth, is the real constraint on an itinerary this month: a viewpoint at 5:30 pm still has color in it, and anything planned after dinner is an indoor plan.
How warm is Braga in February?
The month averages 59.9°F by mid-afternoon and 38.1°F before dawn, a daily swing of 21.8°F. Braga is an inland city, and we found no sea-surface series we could verify for its nearest coast, so we give no water temperature at all. Where a sea figure does appear for Portugal elsewhere, read the small print: those tables usually average daily maxima, which runs a little warmer than a true 24-hour mean.
Translated into what you wear: a real coat at 9 am, that coat carried over an arm by 2 pm on a bright day, and back on within twenty minutes of sunset. Cafés in the arcaded center put tables outside on the good afternoons, and 59.9°F with sun on granite feels warmer than the same figure in wind. Damp air on a rain day undoes that quickly.
We could not verify a frost-night count for this station, so we give no number of them. What the normals do say is that the monthly mean low sits at 38.1°F, six degrees above freezing, and a mean hides its colder tail. Plan for a windshield that needs scraping on a clear morning in the hills above the city, and treat a heated room as a requirement rather than a preference.
How busy is Braga in February? Crowds, prices and booking
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Braga, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What can be said without inventing a figure: February falls outside the summer travel season and outside the school holidays that fill Portuguese cities in July and August. Braga also runs on students, pilgrims and weekday business all year, so a quiet month here is not an empty one.
Book the way you would for any month we cannot benchmark: refundable where the price gap is small, and the hotel chosen for its street rather than for a rate nobody can compare. Two nights suits the city, three if Guimarães goes on the same trip. Most US visitors fly into Porto and come north by train or car, a leg covered in our getting-around guide, with country-wide budget bands in the trip-cost guide.
We could not verify a municipal lodging tax rate for Braga, so no percentage and no per-night amount appear here. Several Portuguese cities levy one and collect it at the property. Ask what your hotel adds at check-out when you reserve, and read know before you go for the paperwork side of a Portuguese stay.
The one place where paying more changes this particular month is location. With 9.6 wet days in the average February, a bed inside the old center turns a rain band into a short walk back rather than a wait at a stop, and it puts the cathedral, the arcades and dinner within the same few blocks. Our where-to-stay guide covers how that decision plays out nationally.
Things to do in Braga in February

What February offers that January largely withholds is a run of usable days: 9.6 wet days against January’s 13.1, and afternoons 2.5°F warmer. Cool air is also the right air for the climb most visitors come for, because a stairway on a wooded hillside is a different exercise at 59.9°F than at summer heat. The trade is light, with the day still short of eleven hours.
The fixed points are Bom Jesus do Monte, its zigzag baroque stairway and the water-counterweight funicular that spares you the steps, the Sé de Braga and its treasury in the middle of the old town, the arcaded Praça da República and Largo do Paço, the terraced Jardim de Santa Bárbara below the archbishops’ palace wall, and the hilltop sanctuary of Sameiro further out.
February changes the air around those places rather than the places themselves. Wet granite on the stairway is genuinely slick after one of the 4.3 heavy days, the funicular becomes the sensible way up, and the Santa Bárbara beds are bare rather than in flower. Sameiro’s view over the Minho depends entirely on the cloud base, so keep it as a decision made on the morning, not a slot fixed a week out.
We could not verify which Braga sites waive admission in February, so we promise no free day and name no free ticket. The outdoor ground costs nothing regardless: the arcaded squares, the terraces of the Santa Bárbara garden, the wooded park below the sanctuary, and the walk out along the Rio Este on a bright morning.
Braga in February: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts after the 7:27 am sunrise but not at it, because the first hour sits near the 38.1°F low. From 9:30, the Sé and the lanes around it while the center is still cold. Lunch indoors at 1 pm. Save the Bom Jesus climb for 2:30 to 4:30, the warmest stretch of the day, and take the funicular down so the last of the light finds you on Praça da República rather than on wet steps at 6:07 pm.
Day two opens slowly in the arcades, gives the morning to the Santa Bárbara garden and the palace quarter, then puts the afternoon on a train to Guimarães or on the road to Sameiro. If the forecast shows one of the 4.3 heavy days, invert it: museums and the cathedral treasury in the morning, funicular up to the sanctuary terrace in the afternoon, and dinner earlier than you planned.
Braga in February vs January and March
| 1991-2020 normal | January | February | March |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 57.4°F (14.1°C) | 59.9°F (15.5°C) | 64.0°F (17.8°C) |
| Average low | 37.6°F (3.1°C) | 38.1°F (3.4°C) | 42.6°F (5.9°C) |
| Precipitation | 7.07 in | 4.37 in | 5.91 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 13.1 | 9.6 | 11.8 |
All three columns come from the same IPMA station and the same thirty-year period, so they compare cleanly. February is the driest of the three by a wide margin: 2.70 inches below January and 1.54 below March, with 3.5 fewer wet days than January and 2.2 fewer than March. It is also the coolest afternoon of the trio bar January, at 4.1°F under March. No sea temperature enters this comparison, because we verified none for the nearest coast.
Shift four weeks later and you buy 64.0°F afternoons, nights at 42.6°F instead of 38.1, and a noticeably longer evening. You pay for it with 11.8 wet days and 5.91 inches of rain, plus the start of the spring travel season. Shift four weeks earlier and January hands back 7.07 inches across 13.1 wet days for almost the same night temperature, which is the worst trade of the three.
Is February a good time to visit Braga?
Yes if your trip is built around a walkable city, indoor architecture and cool-weather walking, and if a 38.1°F morning does not put you off. No if you want long evenings, garden color, or anything resembling beach weather within reach: 10 hours 40 minutes of daylight and a mean low six degrees above freezing are not the makings of a lazy Minho spring.
If the answer came out no, take March rather than April: 64.0°F afternoons, nights at 42.6°F, and the extra light for a second sight after 6 pm, against 5.91 inches of rain and 11.8 wet days. Readers deciding between the whole calendar rather than these three months will get further with our Portugal timing guide.
What February holds alone among the three is the driest record of the winter at this station, 4.37 inches, with the granite city cold enough that the stairway to Bom Jesus is a pleasure rather than a slog.
The last word
Spread 4.37 inches across 9.6 wet days and the average wet February day in Braga carries about 0.46 inch, which reads as a long gray drizzle far more often than a washout. Book two nights, keep the hillside climb for the 2:30 to 4:30 window when the 59.9°F high lands, and hold one indoor afternoon in reserve for whichever of the 4.3 heavy days turns up. The cathedral quarter is five minutes from most central beds, and it does not mind the rain.
