PORTUGAL · SAGRES · JUNE
June gives Sagres 75.0°F days, 61.2°F nights and 0.15 inches of rain for the entire month, measured by the national weather service at the station on the cape itself. Days run long: 14 hours 45 minutes of daylight on June 15, with the sun up at 6:14 a.m. and down at 8:58 p.m. local time. For a vacation built on cliffs, beaches and late dinners outdoors, those are close to ideal numbers.
The Atlantic is the part that does not keep pace. Sea surface off Sagres averages 65.3°F in June, and that figure is a mean of daily maxima, so a full 24-hour average sits a shade lower. Set against May, the trade is plain: May logs 0.87 inches of rain across 3.9 wet days and a 70.7°F high, June logs 0.15 inches across 0.7 days and 75.0°F. You buy dry ground and long light, and the water stays bracing.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · SAGRES · JUNE
June buys dry, long days at 75.0°F with the sea still at 65.3°F: come for the cliffs, the coast paths and the 8:58 p.m. sunsets, and treat every swim as a bonus.
AVG HIGH 75.0°F · 0.7 RAIN DAYS · SEA 65.3°F · 14H45 OF DAYLIGHT
Go for: cliff walking at Cabo de São Vicente, evenings on Praia do Martinhal, and a month that averages fewer than one rainy day from start to finish.
Think twice before: booking June for the swimming: 65.3°F is an average of daily maxima, and the water here faces the open Atlantic.

Every figure here comes from one instrument: IPMA station 533, standing 22.9 m above the sea on the cape, averaged over 1991-2020. It describes Sagres and the exposed south-west point, not the whole region. High ground inland runs colder and far wetter, and the eastern end of the coast keeps its own weather, so read our Algarve guide before you pack for a day away from the cape.
Sagres weather in June: average highs, lows and rain days

IPMA, the Portuguese Institute for Sea and Atmosphere, gives June at Sagres a 75.0°F average high, a 61.2°F average low and 0.15 inches of precipitation across the 1991-2020 period. Those come from a real thermometer at station 533, not from a reanalysis grid cell blended across water and land, and the distinction is worth a sentence because the two methods do not always agree. Anything you read for the wider Algarve is describing a different place with different numbers.
Rain all but stops. An average June records 0.7 days with at least 0.04 inch (1 mm), so most Junes pass without a single wet day and a few carry one grey morning. Check the threshold before you compare with an American table: US monthly summaries usually count days at 0.10 inch or more, and the two counts are not interchangeable. What 0.15 inches over thirty days buys is planning freedom, since the coast walk, the boat trip and the evening outdoors can all go in the same day.
The gap between 75.0°F by day and 61.2°F before dawn runs 13.8°F, which is enough to change what you wear twice. A 3 p.m. beach and a 9:30 p.m. terrace are two different climates at the same address. Pack a fleece or a light windbreaker alongside the swimsuit, and shoes with grip for the cliff paths; our packing guide has the full list for a Portuguese summer.
Sunrise on June 15 falls at 6:14 a.m. and sunset at 8:58 p.m. in Lisbon time, leaving 14 hours 45 minutes between them. The practical effect is a second afternoon. You can leave the beach at six, shower, drive out to the cape and still stand in daylight, then eat at nine-thirty before the sky goes properly dark.
Can you swim in Sagres in June? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Open-Meteo’s marine series puts the sea surface off Sagres at 65.3°F in June, averaged over 2015-2024. Read what that figure is before you trust it: the mean of daily maxima, the warmest point of each day, so a full 24-hour average sits a shade below it. Tables that quote Sagres a degree or two cooler are measuring the whole day rather than the top of it, and neither number is wrong.
Swimmers go in fast at that temperature and swim hard instead of floating, and the first minute is the whole difficulty. Praia da Mareta and Praia do Martinhal, both facing away from the open west, are the gentler places to get in. Praia do Tonel and Praia do Beliche take the Atlantic head on. A shorty wetsuit is ordinary kit on this coast and every surf school hands one out, worth knowing before you travel with a swimsuit and nothing else.
We found no wind or swell series for Sagres, so we put no figure on either. What the climate record does state is where the station stands: an exposed south-west cape with Atlantic water on two sides. Choose the beach on the morning itself, not the night before, and keep the sheltered side of town in reserve for the days when the west side is white.
How busy is Sagres in June? Crowds, prices and the tourist tax
June lands in the run-up to the July and August school holidays, and that is a calendar fact, not a price one. We found no occupancy series for Sagres and no monthly room-rate series, so we name no month cheap and no month expensive. For the budget side of a Portugal trip, country-wide and with real line items, our trip cost guide does that work.
We cannot put a number of weeks on how far ahead to book, because the occupancy data that would justify one is not in our sources. Two reservations still deserve to be early on their own logic. The car comes first: most US travelers fly into Faro, and Sagres sits at the far western end of the Algarve, so the rental shapes the shape of the week. The room comes second, if sleeping at the cape rather than in Lagos matters to you.
We could not verify a tourist-tax rate for Sagres or its municipality, so we quote no percentage and no per-night amount. If a city-tax line shows up at check-in, ask the property for the current rate before you pay it.
Put the extra money in the car. A vehicle turns a windy morning at Tonel into a calm one at Martinhal and brings Ponta da Piedade inside the same day, while a smarter room mostly buys hours you will spend outdoors in 75.0°F air. If nobody in the party wants to drive, our getting-around guide covers the bus network that serves the cape.
Things to do in Sagres in June

June’s 0.7 rain days against May’s 3.9 keep the cliff paths above the cape dry underfoot, and 14 hours 45 minutes of daylight on June 15 give a walking day the shoulder months cannot match. Dry ground plus late light is what this month supplies: a coast walk can start after breakfast, break for the hot middle of the day, and pick up again at six with three good hours left.
The targets sit close together. Cabo de São Vicente, the south-western corner of Europe, ends the road west with its lighthouse on the headland, and the Fortaleza de Sagres occupies the next promontory over. Four beaches ring the town: Tonel and Beliche on the Atlantic side, Mareta below the village, Martinhal to the east. The Rota Vicentina’s coastal path threads the whole line. We could not verify current admission prices or opening hours for the fort or the lighthouse, so we quote none and suggest you check the operator when you book.
What June changes at these places is the air, not the water. The sea reads 65.3°F this month and 63.3°F in July, a range you would struggle to feel, while the air climbs from May’s 70.7°F to 75.0°F. The same water therefore behaves differently: cold against a 70°F May afternoon, tolerable when you come out of it into 75°F. The cliffs and the fort walls, meanwhile, hold the day’s heat well past six.
Daylight is the free item, and June has more of it than any other month. The coast paths, the headland view and the 8:58 p.m. sunset cost nothing, and there are enough evenings in a four-night stay to repeat the last of those until the sky cooperates. Treat the ticketed visits as unknowns in the budget, since we could not price them.
Sagres in June: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. With sunrise at 6:14 a.m., the coast path above Beliche is walkable by seven while the 61.2°F overnight low still lingers. Beach at Mareta from ten, lunch in the village, then the flat hours from two to four when the 75.0°F peak makes shade the sensible choice. Fortaleza de Sagres in the late afternoon, out to Cabo de São Vicente by eight, sunset at 8:58 p.m., dinner at nine-thirty with the sky not yet dark.
Day two goes east while the wind decides. Martinhal in the morning for the calmer water, then the cliffs and coves toward Lagos for the afternoon. With rain on 0.7 days in an average June, what reroutes this day is wind, not cloud: when the west side is white-capped, the south-facing beaches and the drive east still work. On the rare wet morning, Lagos gives you a town to be in and a market to eat in.
Sagres in June vs May and July
| Measure | May | June | July |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 70.7°F | 75.0°F | 77.4°F |
| Average low | 57.0°F | 61.2°F | 62.6°F |
| Precipitation | 0.87 in | 0.15 in | 0.04 in |
| Days with 0.04 in (1 mm) or more | 3.9 | 0.7 | 0.2 |
| Sea surface (mean of daily maxima) | 62.2°F | 65.3°F | 63.3°F |
Across the three months the air climbs and the rain collapses: 70.7°F and 0.87 inches in May, 75.0°F and 0.15 inches in June, 77.4°F and 0.04 inches in July, with wet days falling from 3.9 to 0.7 to 0.2. The sea refuses to follow that line. It reads 62.2°F in May, 65.3°F in June, then drops back to 63.3°F in July, all three taken as means of daily maxima from the same marine series.
Move four weeks earlier and you gain the green that 0.87 inches of May rain keeps alive, at the cost of 4.3°F off the daytime high and a real chance of losing a day to weather. Move four weeks later and July hands you 2.4°F more warmth and the driest air of the three, then takes 2.0°F off the sea and adds the school-holiday crowd to every beach path. June gives up the least on both sides.
Is June a good time to visit Sagres?
Yes, for anyone whose trip is built on walking, surfing and long evenings. A 75.0°F day, 0.15 inches of rain for the whole month and a sunset at 8:58 p.m. make four or five nights at the cape close to the best deal this coast offers. No, for the traveler whose vacation means hours in the water: 65.3°F, and that measured at the warmest point of the day, is a swim and a towel, not an afternoon.
If the water is the point, changing the month does not fix it at Sagres. July’s sea reads 63.3°F, cooler than June’s, and May’s 62.2°F is cooler still. The fix is a different stretch of coast or a later season, and our month-by-month verdict for Portugal sets out where the warm swimming lives. Pick May instead only if you want the green and will accept 3.9 wet days and a 70.7°F high.
One thing June holds that no other month can copy: the longest days of the year, with rain falling on 0.7 of them.
The last word
One more number from the same station: an average June records 0.1 days with 0.39 inch (10 mm) or more, so a genuine soaking turns up in roughly one June in ten. Book the car before the room, pack a windbreaker for a 61.2°F dawn, and keep the swimming ambitions modest at 65.3°F. Then take the cape sunset on your first evening rather than saving it for the last, because if cloud spoils it, June still leaves you four more tries at 8:58 p.m.
