Madeira in May: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and Levada Bookings

Madeira in May sits between a cruise-heavy spring and a drier June. At Funchal’s official weather station the average May afternoon reaches 71.6°F and the night falls to 61.2°F. The sea offshore averages 69.9°F, and on May 15 the sun stays up for about 13 hours 54 minutes. If the island is already settled in your head, the open question is the date: what May adds, what it holds back, and whether April or June would suit your trip better.

Since January 1, 2026, every classified walking route in Madeira, each PR-numbered levada and vereda, charges an access fee and requires a booking. The fee is EUR 4.50 per person for the general public, or EUR 3 through a tourism company that holds an IFCN protocol. Entry comes in 30-minute slots from sunrise to sunset, so a long May day opens more slots than a winter one. Residents of the region walk free.

For the flight itself, our guide to flights from the US covers routes and connections. On landing, the Aerobus runs from Madeira airport through central Funchal to Praia Formosa in 50 minutes, leaving the airport between 08:30 and 22:00. The Sunday and holiday timetable drops several departures, and stop 9, Terminal SAM, is marked disabled. The regional government’s timetable prints no fare, so we give none: the operator answers on 291 201 151.

Madeira weather in May: average highs, lows and rain days

Every figure here comes from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, and its 1991-2020 normals for station 522 at Funchal: a real thermometer at 58 meters of altitude on the south coast, not a model grid cell. In an average May that station records a high of 71.6°F, a low of 61.2°F and 1.07 inches of precipitation. Those numbers do not describe the whole island. Higher ground runs colder and far wetter, and the other end of the coast keeps its own weather, so read them as Funchal’s.

Rain reaches at least 1 mm (0.04 inch) on 3.3 days in an average May, roughly one day in nine, and 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more on 0.8 day, so a proper downpour averages under one day a month. Those are IPMA’s thresholds. US tables count rain days from 0.10 inch, and a May count borrowed from an American-style chart will not match IPMA’s. With 1.07 inches spread across the month, most wet days are light. The plan rain cancels outright is the three-person Monte sledge ride.

Between the 71.6°F afternoon and the 61.2°F night lies a spread of 10.4°F at Funchal: short sleeves on the harbor front at lunch, a light sweater for dinner outdoors. PR1, which runs between 1,857 and 1,491 meters (6,093 and 4,892 feet), sits far above that thermometer, and we have no mountain normal to quote. On May 15 Madeira gets about 13 hours 54 minutes of daylight. Sunrise is at 06:07 UTC and sunset at 20:00 UTC, or 07:07 and 21:00 on island time, one hour ahead of UTC in May. A trail slot at 07:30 starts in full light. The Cabo Girão skywalk closes at 20:00, an hour before the sun goes down, so a sunset seen from the glass is off the table this month.

Swimming in Madeira in May: sea temperature

Open-Meteo’s Marine API puts the sea surface off Madeira at 69.9°F in May, averaged over 2015-2024. That figure is the mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour mean. A sea table built on round-the-clock averages would print a slightly lower May number, and both can be correct at once.

At 69.9°F the water sits about 2°F under Funchal’s 71.6°F afternoon high and nearly 9°F above its 61.2°F night low. Expect a cool first minute and comfortable water once you are swimming. On the north coast, the serviced lava-rock pools at Porto Moniz charge EUR 3 and come with changing rooms, a children’s pool, a bar and a first-aid post.

We found no wind or swell series for May, so we cannot say how often the sea runs rough this month. On an exposed day the Porto Moniz complex keeps swimming inside the rock pools. It opens 09:00 to 19:00 in summer and 09:00 to 17:00 in winter; check which timetable covers May before you drive north.

How busy is Madeira in May? Crowds and prices

Funchal’s cruise season is a winter one. APRAM, the regional port authority, counted 88,918 cruise passengers in April, then 19,434 in May and 10,816 in June. Its charts plot 2025 and 2026 side by side, and we quote the higher, more recent series. Ship passengers are day visitors, and we found no hotel occupancy or room-rate series, so we rank no month cheap or expensive. For budgets by tier, see what a Portugal trip costs.

Levada entry is booked online only, on the regional government’s SIMplifica portal, for walkers alone, in groups or with a company. In May the 30-minute slots run from about 07:07 to 21:00. The Funchal-Monte cable car e-ticket stays valid 60 days, so you can buy it about eight weeks out. Blandy’s advises booking its tours ahead, with free cancellation up to 24 hours before. The Monte sledges cannot be booked at all.

Funchal adds a Taxa Municipal Turística of EUR 2 per person per night, capped at seven consecutive nights, so EUR 14 per guest at most. It applies to every paid overnight stay in the municipality whatever the booking channel, and the count starts again after an interrupted stay. Children 12 and under are exempt on showing ID, as are people with a disability of 60 percent or more and residents of the region.

PR1, the Pico do Areeiro to Pico Ruivo crossing, costs EUR 10.50 for anyone over 12, against EUR 4.50 for the out-and-back to the Pedra Rija viewpoint. PR1 is also excluded from the EUR 9.00 day pass and is priced on its own. The extra EUR 6 buys the full 6.1 km (3.8 miles), about three hours at a Moderate rating, and a 21:00 sunset leaves time for a slow pace. Longer walking stays can use the three-day pass at EUR 22.50 or the seven-day at EUR 52.50.

Things to do in Madeira in May

Monte Palace Tropical Garden keeps its April-to-September hours in May, 09:00 to 19:00, and the Cabo Girão skywalk its March-to-October window, 08:30 to 20:00. Both shorten later in the year: the garden to 18:00 from October, the skywalk to 19:00 from November. With the sun setting at 21:00, a May day can hold a morning trail slot, the garden and the cliff without racing the dark.

Monte Palace, on Caminho das Babosas at the cable car’s top station, spreads 70,000 square meters (about 17 acres) of exotic planting, tile panels and a sculpture museum, at EUR 18 for adults. In Funchal, the Botanical Garden Eng. Rui Vieira at Bom Sucesso holds more than 2,000 exotic species. The Cabo Girão skywalk, a glass platform on the sea cliff above Câmara de Lobos, costs EUR 3 by concordant sources (confirm at the gate). Each PR-numbered trail keeps its own status, changing with weather and works, and Visit Madeira publishes it trail by trail.

The ridge of PR1 does not share Funchal’s afternoon. IPMA’s coastal station stands at 58 meters, and the trail climbs to 1,857, about 1,800 meters (5,900 feet) higher, where IPMA notes the ground runs colder and far wetter. Porto Moniz lies on the north coast, across the island from that thermometer, so its air can differ too. The sea figure of 69.9°F covers the waters off Madeira, and it is the one number here that travels around the coast.

The Cachalote pools beside the Porto Moniz complex are free and open at all hours. Children up to 14 enter Monte Palace free with an adult, and children 12 and under walk PR1 and stand on the Cabo Girão glass free. Under-6s ride the cable car free, and 7 to 14 pay half.

Madeira in May: a two-day itinerary

Day one, the mountain. Book a PR1 slot close to the 07:07 sunrise and walk from Pico do Areeiro, about three hours. Past the Pedra Rija viewpoint the route runs one way toward Pico Ruivo, with no return on the same path, so arrange your ride at the far end before you set off. Back in Funchal, take Blandy’s 16:00 English Premium Tour on Avenida Arriaga (EUR 23, 45 minutes, three wines, Monday to Friday). Reach Cabo Girão by 19:00, since the skywalk shuts at 20:00.

Day two, Monte. The cable car opens at 08:45 (EUR 22 return, EUR 16 one way), and Monte Palace opens at 09:00 beside the top station. The sledge office opens at 09:00 Monday to Saturday: EUR 30 for one, EUR 40 for two, EUR 60 for three, same-day tickets only. If rain wets the ground, no three-person ride runs and the office may close early, so head for the Mercado dos Lavradores (07:00 to 19:00 weekdays, 07:00 to 14:00 Saturday). On a Sunday both are shut, and the Mercado da Penteada opens 07:00 to 13:00.

Madeira in May vs April and June

Against April, May adds 1.8°F to the Funchal high and 2.4°F to the low, cuts precipitation from 1.78 to 1.07 inches and wet days from 4.7 to 3.3, and lifts the sea from 68.0°F to 69.9°F. June adds another 3.1°F to the high (74.7°F) and 3.6°F to the low (64.8°F), drops to 0.31 inches and 1.0 wet day, and brings the sea to 71.6°F. The air and rain figures for all three months come from the same IPMA station and the same 1991-2020 period.

Shifting four weeks earlier costs you 1.9°F of sea and 1.4 more wet days, and puts you in Funchal during a month of 88,918 cruise passengers. Shifting four weeks later wins the warmest, driest month of the three: 2.3 fewer wet days and a sea 1.7°F warmer. Is May a good time to visit Madeira?

Yes, for walkers and sightseers. May pairs 71.6°F afternoons and 3.3 wet days at Funchal with trail slots from 07:07 to 21:00, and it suits a trip built on levadas, gardens and a wine lodge. It fits a beach-first week less well, since the sea at 69.9°F runs cooler than June’s. Anyone who needs a guaranteed dry mountain day should know we have no normal for the peaks.

If May is a no, choose June: the driest of the three months at Funchal, 0.31 inches and 1.0 wet day, with a 74.7°F high and the sea at 71.6°F. Among April, May and June, May is the month when Funchal’s cruise crowd has already shrunk to about a fifth of April’s while the sea sits within 2°F of June’s.

Book the PR1 slot as soon as your flights are fixed, then fit Monte, Blandy’s and the cliff around a 21:00 sunset. Two details for the day bag: inside Monte Palace the museum closes at 17:00 even while the garden runs to 19:00, and the emergency number across Madeira, as across Portugal and the EU, is 112.
