May is when Funchal’s rain gauge goes quiet. The official normals give the month a 71.6°F average high, a 61.2°F average low and 1.07 inches of rain spread over 3.3 wet days, against 1.78 inches and 4.7 wet days in April. The sea is still catching up at 69.9°F, and daylight now stretches to nearly fourteen hours.
One rule changed in 2026 and it reshapes any Madeira plan built around walking. Since January 1, every classified trail on the island, each PR-numbered levada and vereda, charges an access fee and requires a booking made online beforehand. The fee is modest at EUR 4.50 for most visitors. The booking is not optional, and entry slots run from sunrise to sunset, which is precisely why the month you pick decides how many of them exist.

Those figures come from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, at station 522 in Funchal: a real thermometer 58 meters above the sea on the south coast, not a model grid cell smeared across the island. The distinction matters more in Madeira than almost anywhere. The 71.6°F high describes one sheltered strip of shoreline. High ground runs colder and far wetter, and the north side keeps its own weather, so a mountain day planned on a harbor reading is the classic first-timer error.
On the rain, read the threshold before the count. IPMA logs 3.3 days at 1 mm or more, which is 0.04 inch, and 0.8 day at 10 mm, 0.39 inch. American forecast tables usually start counting at 0.10 inch, so the two numbers are not interchangeable. In daily terms, close to 28 of the month’s 31 days record nothing measurable at Funchal, and the wet ones tend to be a gray stretch rather than a lost day.
Day to night, the spread is 10.4 degrees, from 71.6°F down to 61.2°F. That is a light layer at dinner on the coast and a real one anywhere above it, since the ridges are colder than the station that produced these normals. May 15 brings 13 hours 54 minutes of daylight. The almanac puts sunrise at 06:07 and sunset at 20:00 UTC, and Madeira runs an hour ahead of UTC in May, so the local clock reads 07:07 and 21:00. That long tail of light does real work: trail entry slots are sold from sunrise to sunset, while the cable car stops at 17:45, four hours before dark. Evenings belong to the seafront, not to Monte.
Can you swim in Madeira in May? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea surface off Madeira averages 69.9°F in May, from the 2015 to 2024 marine record. Read that number with one caveat attached: it is the mean of daily maxima, so it describes the warmest point of an average day rather than a flat 24-hour figure. Water at eight in the morning sits below it. Water at four in the afternoon, after a day of May sun on a sheltered south-coast bay, is what the average was built from.
In practice, 69.9°F is swimmable and not soothing. Expect the sharp intake of breath at the first step, then twenty comfortable minutes, then a towel. Children last less. Snorkelers who want an hour in one spot will want a shorty. For scale against the neighbors, May’s water runs 1.9 degrees above April’s 68.0°F and 1.7 degrees below June’s 71.6°F, so a four-week shift either way moves the sea by less than two degrees.
On wind and swell we hold no verified May figures for the island, so no promise here about surf or crossing conditions. What the climate record does say is that Funchal’s numbers stop at Funchal: the north coast does not share the south coast’s weather. A glassy morning at the marina is not a forecast for Porto Moniz, and the boat operators’ own day-of calls are the ones worth trusting.
How busy is Madeira in May? Booking slots and the EUR 2 tourist tax
No verified monthly price index exists for Madeira accommodation, so we quote none rather than dress up a guess. What is documented is the new administrative brake on the island’s busiest attraction, its trails. Access to every classified path is metered in 30-minute entry slots running sunrise to sunset. May’s 13 hours 54 minutes of daylight divides into roughly 27 start times per trail day, well above what a December afternoon allows.
Booking is mandatory and exists in one channel only: SIMplifica, the Regional Government’s digital services portal. It applies identically to solo walkers, to groups, and to people walking with a tour company. The fee is EUR 4.50 per person for the general public and for clients of companies without an IFCN protocol, EUR 3 with a company that holds one, and residents of the region are exempt. The Funchal cable car sells e-tickets that stay valid 60 days, so that purchase can be made before you fly.
Then the bed tax. Funchal charges a Taxa Municipal Turística of EUR 2 per person per night on every paid overnight stay in the municipality, whatever the booking channel, capped at 7 consecutive nights, so EUR 14 per guest at most. Two adults on a ten-night stay pay EUR 28 in total. Children of 12 and under are exempt on production of an ID, as are visitors with a disability of 60 percent or more and regional residents who can show a local tax address.
Only one line item genuinely changes a May day, and it is small. The cable car costs EUR 22 return or EUR 16 one way. Buy the single, add a EUR 4.50 booked slot on PR 3.1 Caminho Real do Monte, and you descend on foot for EUR 20.50 with the long light to spare. Pay the extra six euros for the return ride when legs or knees say so, not out of habit.
Things to do in Madeira in May: trail fees, cable car and garden hours
May lines up what winter cannot. Trail slots follow the sun, so a 07:07 start or a late-afternoon walk both exist. Monte Palace Tropical Garden is on its April to September timetable, 09:00 to 19:00, an hour longer than October through March. And with 3.3 wet days instead of April’s 4.7, the Monte wicker sledges, which never run three-up on wet ground, are grounded far less often.
Prices and hours, named. The Funchal to Monte cable car runs 08:45 to 17:45 daily, EUR 22 return or EUR 16 one way, free to age 6 and half fare from 7 to 14. Monte Palace Tropical Garden sits at Caminho das Babosas by the top station: 70,000 square meters of planting and a sculpture museum, EUR 18 for adults, with the museum shutting at 17:00 and last entry at 17:00. The carros de cesto cost EUR 30, 40 or 60 for one, two or three riders, Monday to Saturday, 09:00 to 18:00.
Free in May, and worth counting. Children up to 14 enter Monte Palace at no charge with an adult, and school groups go free. Under-6s ride the cable car free. Under-12s pay no tourist tax at all with an ID. The SIMplifica booking itself adds no reservation surcharge on top of the EUR 4.50, so a family of four with two young children walks a classified levada for nine euros.
Madeira in May: two-day itinerary and sunrise times
Day one, Monte. First cable car at 08:45, up before the coaches. Monte Palace opens at 09:00, and because the sculpture museum inside takes its last entry at 17:00 while the garden runs to 19:00, do the indoor rooms first and the terraces after. Sledge tickets are sold on site, same day only, Monday to Saturday from 09:00, and the office can close early when the queue is long. Back down on the 17:45 car, or on foot with a booked PR 3.1 slot, with light until 21:00.
Day two, the levada. Book the earliest SIMplifica slot for PR 6 Levada das 25 Fontes, with PR 6.1 Levada do Risco next door as the short add-on. Sunrise at 07:07 means a cool start and shade for the walk in. If the weather turns, and 0.8 day a month reaches 0.39 inch, check the status of your specific PR number before driving: on September 8, 2026, PR 1.3 Vereda da Encumeada and PR 4 Levada do Barreiro were restricted while the 25 Fontes pair was open. Across eight weeks the island climbs steadily. Highs move from 69.8°F in April to 71.6°F in May and 74.7°F in June, while nights rise faster, 58.8°F to 64.8°F, which is what makes June evenings feel different rather than the daytime. Rain does the dramatic part: 1.78 inches in April, 1.07 in May, then 0.31 in June, under a third of May’s total. Wet days fall from 4.7 to 3.3 to a single day.
Shift forward four weeks and you buy 3.1 degrees of daytime warmth, 1.7 degrees of extra sea and near-total dryness, at the cost of hotter walking on exposed ridges and a busier island heading into summer. Shift back to April and you trade 0.71 inch of extra rain and 1.4 more wet days for cooler trail conditions. May sits where the walking and the calendar agree, which is the whole argument for it.
Is May a good time to visit Madeira?
For walkers, yes without qualification. A month with 3.3 wet days, highs of 71.6°F and slots available from 07:07 to sunset is close to the best combination the island’s calendar offers, and the ridges stay cool enough to climb at midday. For anyone whose trip is built around swimming, the answer softens: 69.9°F at the warmest hour of an average day is a plunge, not a soak.
If the water is the point, June is the month to move to. It adds 1.7 degrees of sea, 3.1 degrees of daytime heat, and drops the month’s rain to 0.31 inch across a single wet day. If cool, quiet trail mornings matter more than the beach, April still works, with 4.7 wet days as the price.
What no other month matches is the pairing of nearly fourteen hours of daylight with only 1.07 inches of rain, which means a full levada day and a Monte afternoon can share the same 24 hours without either being rushed.
The last word
Book the trail slot before you book anything else, because SIMplifica is the only door and it opens on 30-minute intervals that the sun, not the office, sets. Then one small piece of Funchal fine print, since May travelers often split the island: the EUR 2 nightly tax caps at 7 consecutive nights, but an interrupted stay starts the count again, so two nights on the north coast in the middle of a week resets your Funchal total to zero and begins it afresh on your return.
