By the middle of March the Algarve splits its day evenly: about 12 hours of daylight on the 15th, with sunrise at 06:40 and sunset at 18:40 Lisbon time. Afternoons at Faro average 66.0°F, the cliff paths stay dry on most days of the month, and the sea has not started its climb yet.
You have already picked the coast. March decides what the trip gets: warmer afternoons than February, a sea that peaks at 60.9°F, no lifeguard on any beach, and a Benagil cave you can enter only with a licensed guide. If swimming drives your vacation, April moves every number in your favor. If walking and driving drive it, March holds up well.

Every figure here comes from one thermometer: IPMA station 554 at Faro, 5 meters above the sea at the eastern end of a 150-kilometer (about 93-mile) coast. High ground inland runs colder and far wetter, and the western end around Sagres keeps its own weather. Read the normals below as Faro’s before you pack for a mountain trail.

IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, publishes 1991–2020 normals for its Faro station, and those are the numbers we use: an average high of 66.0°F, an average low of 51.4°F and 1.84 inches of precipitation across the month. They come from a real thermometer 5 meters above sea level, read over three decades, rather than from a model grid cell blending land and sea. Apply them to the coast around Faro and no further.
Rain reaches at least 1 mm (0.04 inch) on 5.6 days of an average March, roughly one day a week, and a proper soaking of 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more falls on 1.6 days. Expect a wet spell most weeks and one or two days a month that push you indoors. IPMA counts from 1 mm, while US tables start at 0.10 inch, so a March count at Faro cannot be set against a Florida chart.
Between the 51.4°F dawn and the 66.0°F afternoon, the air at Faro moves 14.6°F. Carry a fleece or sweater for breakfast and dinner, a T-shirt layer for a midday cliff walk, and a light rain shell for the wet days. Our Portugal packing list covers shoes and the rest of the bag.
On March 15 the sun rises at 06:40 and sets at 18:40. Clocks have not yet moved forward at mid-month, so Lisbon time and UTC match, and the day runs about 12 hours 00 minutes. Plan to be off exposed cliff tops by 18:40 and book dinner for after dark.
Can you swim in the Algarve in March? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Open-Meteo’s marine data puts the sea surface off the Algarve at 60.9°F in March, averaged over 2015–2024. That figure is the mean of each day’s maximum, so it reads a shade warmer than a 24-hour average of the same water. On the same measure March runs slightly cooler than February, at 61.3°F.
For most swimmers, 60.9°F means a sharp gasp on entry and a dip counted in minutes. A full wetsuit makes a longer swim workable, and Faro’s 66.0°F afternoon does little to warm you once you are out. Leave a towel and a dry layer on the sand before you go in.
Check a marine forecast the morning you plan to swim. Supervision is firmer. Portaria 204-A/2026 opens the 2026 lifeguarded season on May 15 in Albufeira and on June 1 in Lagos, Faro, Tavira and the other listed councils, so every March swim here is unsupervised. Swimming into Benagil’s sea cave is banned outright.
How busy is the Algarve in March? Crowds and prices
On the calendar, March falls in the Algarve’s off-season: no council opens its lifeguarded bathing season before May 15. We found no hotel occupancy or monthly room-rate series, so we crown no month the cheapest and quote no nightly price. Our Portugal trip-cost guide sets out daily budgets.
Without lead-time data, we suggest booking rooms and a rental car two to three weeks out (est.), earlier if your dates fall in a US school break. Benagil has no walk-up option left: solo kayak rentals into the cave ended in July 2025 and each guided group’s time inside is capped, so reserve a licensed tour when you book your flights.
We could not verify a tourist-tax rate for the Algarve councils, so we give no figure. Ask your hotel at booking whether a nightly charge applies and whether it is collected at the desk.
Put any extra money into a rental car. The A22, the Via do Infante running the length of the Algarve, carries a zero toll rate under Lei n.º 37/2024, so you pay for the car and fuel alone, and Sagres, Lagos and Benagil fit into one base. Our car-rental guide covers insurance and pickup.
Things to do in the Algarve in March
March gives you a 12-hour day and Faro afternoons near 66.0°F, enough to reach Sagres at opening time and still stand above the sea stacks of Ponta da Piedade before the 18:40 sunset. Headland walks run in sweater weather, and the beaches are open for long walks with no bathing season in force.
The Fortaleza de Sagres opens 09:30 to 17:30, last entry 17:00, and one ticket covers the fortress and the promontory. Ask at the gate for the adult price. At Benagil, the maritime authority’s Edital 019/2024, amended by Edital 009/2025, bans swimming into the cave and landing on its inner beach. Guided kayaks enter by the eastern arch for up to eight minutes. Motorized boats use the western arch, keep 15 meters (about 49 feet) off the rock and stay two minutes.
Faro’s afternoon air averages 66.0°F while the sea peaks at 60.9°F, a gap of about 5°F, and the water is a touch colder than in February. On a Benagil paddle the spray is winter-cold, so wear quick-dry layers instead of cotton. At Sagres the Faro normals stop applying, because the western end of the coast keeps its own weather.
Driving the A22 costs nothing in tolls, and the same zero rate covers the A24 and A25. The Fortaleza de Sagres waives its ticket on Sundays and public holidays until 14:00 only for residents of Portugal, so visitors pay on those days as on any other.
The Algarve in March: a two-day itinerary
Day one, the west. Sunrise is 06:40. Take the A22 west after breakfast and aim for the Fortaleza de Sagres near its 09:30 opening, with a warm layer for the promontory. Lunch in Lagos, walk the Ponta da Piedade cliffs from mid-afternoon, and start back east as the light goes at 18:40. If you reverse the order, remember the fortress takes its last visitors at 17:00.
Day two, Benagil. Book a licensed kayak or paddleboard tour for late morning, when the air has warmed, and expect up to eight minutes inside the cave. If one of March’s 1.6 heavy-rain days arrives, or the operator cancels for sea conditions, switch to Faro‘s old town or drive east to Tavira on the toll-free A22, and hold a backup tour slot on day three if your trip allows.

IPMA’s Faro normals climb 3.4°F from February’s 62.6°F high to March’s 66.0°F, then another 3.3°F to April’s 69.3°F. Lows step up from 47.8°F to 51.4°F and 54.3°F. March is the wettest of the three, with 1.84 inches over 5.6 days against 1.65 inches in February and 1.54 in April, and the sea slips from 61.3°F to 60.9°F before rising to 63.5°F in April.
Going four weeks earlier, to February, costs 3.4°F of afternoon warmth and 3.6°F at night but returns a sea 0.4°F warmer and slightly less rain. Going four weeks later, to April, adds 3.3°F by day and 2.6°F in the sea, with the lowest rainfall of the three. Neither move reaches the lifeguard season.
Is March a good time to visit the Algarve?
Yes, for travelers coming to walk, drive and look: the Sagres promontory, the Ponta da Piedade cliffs, a guided paddle into Benagil and 12 hours of light to fit them into. No, for anyone whose vacation hinges on long swims, since the sea peaks at 60.9°F and no beach has lifeguards before May 15.
If the answer is no, wait for April, when the sea reaches 63.5°F, Faro’s highs reach 69.3°F and rain drops to 1.54 inches. A supervised swim needs later still: May 15 in Albufeira or June 1 across most of the coast. Our month-by-month guide weighs the full year.

The last word
Decide by the water. If a swim is optional, March at Faro gives 66.0°F afternoons, a toll-free A22 and a Benagil cave you enter with a guide or not at all. If a swim is the reason to fly, book later in the year and read the beach calendar closely: even in high summer one Castro Marim beach keeps lifeguards only from July 1 to August 31, and Portugal’s environment agency publishes water quality throughout the season.
