GUIMARÃES · AUGUST · NORTHERN PORTUGAL
The August normal for Guimarães is a 76.6°F afternoon, a 60.3°F dawn and 1.15 inches of rain spread over roughly three days. Portugal’s first capital, founded in the 10th century and capital in the 12th, keeps its whole argument inside one walkable perimeter: a historic center of 38.2 hectares that UNESCO inscribed in 2001, with a buffer zone of 129.4 hectares around it.
What the date takes away is elbow room, because August is when most of Europe is on vacation and a small walled town shares its summer with everyone else’s. What it hands back is light: 13 hours 52 minutes of it on August 15, with the sun still up at 8:34 p.m. and a long dusk behind that.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · GUIMARÃES
August gives Guimarães the warmest average afternoon of its three summer months and keeps rainfall under half of September’s total, so take it for dry evenings and accept company in the squares.
AVG HIGH 76.6°F · 1.15 IN OF RAIN · 13 H 52 MIN OF DAYLIGHT ON AUG 15
Go for: evening light until 8:34 p.m. in a 38.2-hectare walled center, 1.15 inches of rain for the entire month, and afternoons you plan around shade rather than showers.
Think twice before: building a day around a ticket desk.

Guimarães weather in August: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | August normal, 1991–2020 | In plain terms |
|---|---|---|
| Average high | 76.6°F (24.8°C) | Warm afternoons, not a heat wave on the average day |
| Average low | 60.3°F (15.7°C) | A light layer at breakfast |
| Rainfall | 1.15 in (29 mm) | A month’s total that falls in a handful of hours |
| Days at 0.04 in or more | 3.2 | Measurable rain about one day in ten |
| Days at 0.39 in or more | 0.9 | One genuine soaking in an average August |
| Daylight, Aug 15 | 13 h 52 min | Sunrise 6:43 a.m., sunset 8:34 p.m. local |
Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, and its 1991–2020 normals for station 545 at Porto Pedras Rubras: an average high of 76.6°F, an average low of 60.3°F, 1.15 inches of precipitation for the month. That is a real thermometer at 67.7 m of altitude, not a model grid cell, and the two are not interchangeable. It is also a coastal station. Guimarães lies inland, so its hot afternoons run above 76.6°F and its winter nights below anything August shows.
In an average August, 3.2 days record at least 0.04 inch of rain and 0.9 day records 0.39 inch or more. Read that as measurable rain about one day in ten, and one real soaking across the month. Those thresholds belong to IPMA, not to the 0.10-inch threshold American tables use, so the counts do not line up with rain-day figures you may have read for US cities.
Between the 76.6°F high and the 60.3°F low lies 16.3°F, and both happen inside the same 24 hours. A 7 a.m. start in the old town wants a light sweater. The same lane at 4 p.m. wants a hat and a bottle of water. Two layers and one pair of shoes that handle worn granite cover the whole month, and our packing guide takes the rest of the suitcase.
August 15 carries 13 hours 52 minutes of daylight, with sunrise at 6:43 a.m. and sunset at 8:34 p.m. local time (05:43 and 19:34 UTC, Portugal running an hour ahead in summer). That opens a second outdoor block after dinner: full light until past eight, then a usable dusk on top of it.
How warm is Guimarães in August?
76.6°F by day, 60.3°F at night, 16.3°F apart. Set against July’s 75.7°F and September’s 74.3°F, August holds the warmest average afternoon of the three, by 0.9°F over the month before and 2.3°F over the month after. The spread between night and day is wider than the spread between the three months.
In practice that means dressing for two days in one. Long sleeves at breakfast come off by ten and go back on at nine in the evening. From roughly one o’clock the inland correction does its work, and a town that reads 76.6°F on a coastal instrument feels several degrees warmer on open granite, which is the argument for putting the exposed squares at either end of the day.
Frost is not an August question in Guimarães. The month’s average low sits more than 28°F above freezing, and the normals we read carry no frost-day count for the station in any case, so we publish none.
How busy is Guimarães in August? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Guimarães, so we crown no month expensive and we quote no nightly figure. What stands on the calendar alone is this: August is the European vacation month, and an inscribed center of 38.2 hectares, buffered by another 129.4, is not a place that swallows a crowd without showing it.
Without a booking-window figure we will not tell you how many weeks ahead to reserve. The shape of the town argues for deciding early anyway. Most of the building stock inside the perimeter is privately owned, the legally protected list runs to nineteen properties, ten National Monuments and nine of Public Interest, and “central” in Guimarães means a short set of streets rather than a district. Our where-to-stay guide sets the regional picture and trip cost the national one.
We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for Guimarães, so we give no percentage and no per-night amount. Ask at check-in and read the reservation’s fine print before you sign it. The rest of the paperwork, from cards to documents, sits in know before you go.
One spend genuinely changes this month: a room you would willingly sit in between two and five in the afternoon. The walking here is on stone, the inland afternoon runs above the coastal 76.6°F, and the day splits naturally into an early block and an evening one. Shade, a fan or air conditioning, and a bed five minutes from the squares buy back the hours the heat takes.
Things to do in Guimarães in August

With 1.15 inches of rain for the whole month and light holding to 8:34 p.m., August lets you build an entire day outdoors and still keep the last two hours of it for the squares. September doubles the wet days, from 3.2 to 5.8, and a plan that depends on open ground stops being a plan. Here it is simply the default.
The inscribed property covers 38.2 hectares and grew around two poles, both standing from somewhere between 950 and 1498: the castle at the north end, the monastic complex at the south. Walking one to the other crosses a medieval street layout that survived the grand houses, civic buildings and new squares of 1498 to 1693. Outside the walls, the Couros Zone takes its name from the leather tanning once practiced there, as does the river, and keeps its tanneries, workers’ houses and streets of the 19th and early 20th centuries.
Those buildings are identical in July and in September. What August changes is the hour at which you can stand in front of them. The squares laid out between 1498 and 1693 are open ground with little shade, while the medieval lanes between them are the cool half of the same walk, so run the open spaces before ten and the narrow streets at midday. We hold no opening hour and no admission fee for the castle or the monastic complex, so confirm both directly before you plan an afternoon around either.
The public spaces belong to the municipality, so the part of Guimarães most visitors remember, the streets and squares between the two poles, costs nothing at any hour. UNESCO does single out the Couros Zone as needing an urgent conservation and rehabilitation strategy, and names tourism-driven gentrification as a pressure on the property. Carry that while you walk it: spend in the neighborhood, keep to the public ways.
Guimarães in August: a two-day itinerary
Day one runs on the light. Out by 7:30, when the air is nearer the 60.3°F low than the 76.6°F high, and take the walled center from the castle downhill through the squares. By one o’clock the sun owns the open ground, so eat long and stay indoors until four. Back out at five for the Couros Zone beyond the walls, then keep seven to 8:34 p.m. for the old lanes at sunset. Seven walking hours inside 38.2 hectares is a generous day.
Day two goes south to the monastic complex in the morning, the 19th-century tanneries and workers’ houses after, and leaves the afternoon for anything with fixed opening hours. Call ahead for monument hours in town. If the one heavy day of an average August lands on you, the 0.9 day at 0.39 inch or more, move the afternoon indoors or move it out of town: Braga and Porto are the usual wet-day swaps, and our getting-around guide has the services.
Guimarães in August vs July and September
| Measure | July | August | September |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 75.7°F | 76.6°F | 74.3°F |
| Average low | 59.9°F | 60.3°F | 58.6°F |
| Rainfall | 0.65 in | 1.15 in | 2.69 in |
| Days at 0.04 in or more | 3.1 | 3.2 | 5.8 |
On air temperature the three months sit within 2.3°F of one another: 75.7°F, then 76.6°F, then 74.3°F. Rain is where they separate. July runs 0.65 inch, August 1.15, September 2.69, and the wet-day counts follow the same curve, 3.1 to 3.2 to 5.8. Guimarães is inland, so no sea-surface reading applies to it, and we hold none for the town in any case.
Shift four weeks later and you trade 2.3°F of afternoon warmth for 1.54 extra inches of rain and 2.6 extra wet days, with the European vacation month behind you. Shift four weeks earlier and July saves half an inch of rain, 0.65 against 1.15, for 0.9°F off the afternoon, and puts you in the same vacation crowd. Both months have their own page: July and September.
Is August a good time to visit Guimarães?
Yes if you want the warmest afternoons of the three summer months, a month with only 1.15 inches of rain, and light to 8:34 p.m. in a town small enough to cross twice a day. No if you intend to climb in full sun after lunch, or if you need ticket prices and opening hours locked before you fly, because we hold neither for any monument in Guimarães.
If that is a no, July is the nearer correction, not September: 0.65 inch of rain against August’s 1.15, and only 0.9°F off the afternoon. September thins the crowd but brings 2.69 inches over 5.8 wet days, which is a different kind of trip. The twelve-month view for the country sits in best time to visit Portugal, and the regional context in Porto and the north.
What August alone offers: 76.6°F afternoons with rain still under half of September’s total, and 13 hours 52 minutes of daylight on the 15th to spend inside a 38.2-hectare walled town.
The last word
Settle the bed before you settle the days, because the protected core is nineteen properties inside 38.2 hectares and August is the month the rest of Europe is off work too. Then walk castle to monastery at eight in the evening, while the light is still on the granite ground floors that carry half-timbered upper stories. That building method was developed here in the Middle Ages, and it traveled with the Portuguese to Africa and the New World, where it became a characteristic feature of colonial towns.
