Braga in December: Weather, Rain Days and How It Compares to November

Braga spends December under Atlantic weather that arrives from the west and keeps arriving. The normal high is 58.8°F, the normal low 38.7°F, and the month collects 7.49 inches of rain, more than November or January. None of that is dramatic. It is sweater-and-hood weather in a granite city compact enough to cross on foot between showers.

What the date really takes away is light. On December 15 the sun rises at 7:51 am and is gone by 5:06 pm, leaving 9 hours 14 minutes to spend and a very long evening. Build the trip around that figure and the month works well. Schedule a full day of hill walking and you will finish it in the dark.

December hands Braga its shortest days and its wettest normals of the three winter months, and it still carries a good two or three night city trip if the plans can move indoors at short notice.

Go for: mild city days at 58.8°F, an old center you can walk end to end between showers, and low-season weeks in the Minho.

Think twice before: planning hill days above the city: our normals come from a valley station at Merelim, and high ground in the Minho runs colder and far wetter.

Most December trips here arrive through Porto and carry on north by train, and our getting-around guide covers the tickets. What changes with the date, and only with the date, is the weather, the daylight and the shape of the day, so the normals below come first.

Every figure here comes from one thermometer. IPMA, the Portuguese institute for the sea and the atmosphere, publishes 1991-2020 normals for station 622 at Braga Merelim, and that is a real instrument on the valley floor, not a model grid cell. It gives December an average high of 58.8°F (14.9°C), an average low of 38.7°F (3.7°C), and 7.49 inches of precipitation in an average month. Those readings describe Braga and its valley. They do not describe the high ground of the Minho, which is colder and considerably wetter.

13.3 days in an average December record at least 0.04 inch of rain, so measurable rain lands roughly three days in seven, and 6.1 of those days reach 0.39 inch or more, a real soaking about one day in five. A caveat if you compare with an American almanac: IPMA counts 1 mm and 10 mm, not the 0.10 inch used in US tables, and the two sets of counts are not interchangeable. A December week in Braga therefore holds about three wet days and four workable ones, and the normals cannot say which is which.

Between the daytime 58.8°F and the nighttime 38.7°F sits a 20.1°F swing, and that swing is what fills the bag: a warm mid-layer you can shed after lunch, a hooded waterproof rather than an umbrella on an exposed hill, and shoes with grip, because Braga’s granite paving and stairs turn slick in the rain. Our packing guide has the rest of the winter list.

On December 15 the sun rises at 7:51 am and sets at 5:06 pm in local time, converted from the UTC readings, for 9 hours 14 minutes of daylight. Usable light runs from about 9 to 4. Any plan with a drive at each end spends most of that on the road, which is why the churches, the museums and a long lunch carry the second half of the afternoon.

How warm is Braga in December, and can you swim?

December in Braga runs between an average high of 58.8°F and an average low of 38.7°F, a spread of 20.1°F inside the same 24 hours. Both are 30-year averages, so individual days fall either side of them, and the daytime figure is a peak you meet for a couple of hours in the early afternoon rather than a level the day holds.

In practice you walk out at 9 in a mid-layer and a shell, and the mid-layer comes off after lunch when the sun is out. Gloves are optional at 38.7°F; a hood is not, because the rain and the wind do more to your comfort here than the thermometer does. Nothing in the month asks for the parka you would pack for a European city three hundred miles inland.

The IPMA normals we read carry no frost-day count, so we give no number of freezing nights for Braga. The monthly average low sits 6.7°F above freezing, and an average is not a floor: clear, still nights go lower. On swimming, the answer is short. Braga is an inland city, we hold no sea-surface reading for the Minho coast, and the sea tables published for coastal towns average daily maxima, which read a little warmer than a 24-hour mean. So no water temperature appears here.

How busy is Braga in December? Crowds, prices and booking

December is low season in the Minho by the calendar, and that is all we can safely call it. We looked for a monthly occupancy series and a monthly room-rate series for Braga and found neither, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we can date is the weather: 7.49 inches of rain across 13.3 wet days is why the arcaded terraces are not the draw they are in June, and why the city feels like a place you visit for its interiors.

Without an occupancy series we give no booking lead time in weeks. Two constraints survive that gap. The last stretch of the month carries the year-end holidays, and we could not verify which sites and kitchens close on those dates, so confirm directly for the nights you want. And a refundable rate is worth more than a small discount in a month that puts rain on 13 days out of 31. Our where-to-stay guide covers the northern bases.

We could not verify whether Braga levies a municipal tourist tax, or at what rate, so no per-night amount appears. Ask the property what the nightly total includes before you send a deposit, and read know before you go for the rest of the paperwork side of a Portuguese booking.

Money spent on the walk home does more for this month than money spent on anything else. With sunset at 5:06 pm and rain on 13.3 days, a room in the old center turns a soaked evening into a five-minute return, while a room out by a ring road turns it into a taxi. Older buildings heat unevenly in winter, so ask what heating the room actually has. A rental car only pays if you intend to leave the city for the hills, and the cost guide handles the budget.

Things to do in Braga in December: Bom Jesus do Monte, the Sé and Praça da República

Short days reorder the itinerary instead of canceling it. With 9 hours 14 minutes of light on December 15, the outdoor half of the day has to sit between a late breakfast and mid-afternoon, and churches, museums and a two-hour lunch absorb the rest. Summer visitors do this the other way around. December also gives the city its best surface: wet granite under a low sun that never climbs far.

Bom Jesus do Monte stands on the wooded hill east of town, its baroque stairway rising past landings and fountains to the church, with a water-balance funicular for anyone who would rather ride up and walk down. In the center, the Sé de Braga anchors a knot of lanes, Praça da República is the arcaded square where the city takes its coffee, and the Santa Bárbara garden lays out its box hedges beside the old archbishops’ palace. We could not verify December hours or admission at any of them, so confirm with each site before you build a morning around it.

What the month changes is the approach, not the place. The Bom Jesus stairway is granite and wet roughly three days in seven, so the handrail side is the sensible side and the funicular stops being a novelty. The garden reads clipped and bare rather than flowering. And the 20.1°F gap between high and low makes the hilltop at 9 am and the square at 3 pm two genuinely different outings, packed for in one bag.

The free part of Braga stays free in December: the squares, the arcades, the garden, the climb up through the woods. We could not confirm whether the sanctuary church or the cathedral treasury charges entry, so we quote no ticket and no free day. The cheapest hours are the ones after 5:06 pm, when the light has gone and the whole city has moved indoors.

Braga in December: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts late by design. Coffee at 8:30 on Praça da República, since the sun only clears the horizon at 7:51 am and the first hour of light is thin. Walk the old center from 9:30 to noon, cathedral first. Eat indoors at 1. Give the afternoon to Bom Jesus, up by funicular and down the stairway, and be back under cover by 4:30, ahead of the 5:06 pm sunset. Book dinner for 8 and you will still have walked the lit streets first.

Day two follows the sky. Dry morning: take the train to Guimarães for the castle and the old quarter, and be back for the last of the light. Wet morning, and 6.1 days in an average December bring 0.39 inch or more: keep the morning indoors in Braga and move the outdoor hour to the afternoon if it clears. Either way, leave one outdoor plan floating, because nothing in these normals says which day the rain picks.

Braga in December vs November and January

Normal November December January
Average high 62.6°F 58.8°F 57.4°F
Average low 42.8°F 38.7°F 37.6°F
Precipitation 6.70 in 7.49 in 7.07 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 12.9 13.3 13.1
Sea temperature not verified not verified not verified

All three months come from the same station and the same 1991-2020 period, so the comparison is clean. December runs 3.8°F cooler by day than November and 1.4°F warmer than January, and its nights sit 4.1°F below November’s. It is also the wettest of the three at 7.49 inches, against 7.07 in January and 6.70 in November. Wet-day counts barely move: 12.9, 13.3, 13.1. The rain does not become more frequent in December, it becomes heavier. We hold no sea reading for any of the three.

Shifting four weeks earlier buys 3.8°F of daytime warmth, 0.79 inch less rain and more usable light, and our November page carries those numbers in full. Shifting four weeks later gives up 1.4°F by day and 1.1°F at night for 0.42 inch less rain, which is a poor trade unless the dates are fixed for you. Neither move gets you a dry month in the Minho.

Is December a good time to visit Braga?

Yes, for a two or three night city trip. At 58.8°F by day this is mild winter weather, the center is small enough to cross between showers, and the sights that matter sit close together. No, if the trip is built on walking the hills above the city or on sitting outdoors: 13.3 wet days, 6.1 of them heavy, and a 5:06 pm sunset will dismantle both plans inside 48 hours.

If that is a no, move earlier rather than later. November holds 62.6°F days and 6.70 inches of rain, the best of the three winter months on both counts. January offers nothing December does not, at 57.4°F by day and 13.1 wet days. For a genuinely dry stretch in the north you are looking at late spring or summer, and our 12-month verdict for Portugal lays out which regions turn first.

What December alone offers is this pairing: nights that average 38.7°F, well above freezing, sitting inside the year’s shortest days at 9 hours 14 minutes of light, so the city is cold enough to feel like winter and mild enough to walk all day.

The last word

Book the central room, hold one indoor morning in reserve, and treat 1 pm as the middle of the day rather than the start of the afternoon. One figure we kept back: the thermometer behind every number here sits at 68.4 m, on the valley floor at Merelim. Drive up into the hills of the Minho and you leave that reading behind in both directions, colder than 58.8°F and wetter than 7.49 inches, which is exactly where December stops being a city month.
