TAVIRA · SEPTEMBER · EASTERN ALGARVE
September hands Tavira the same coastline August had, with five degrees taken off the afternoon. The 1991-2020 normals from Portugal’s national weather service, measured at the Faro station just west of town, give an average high of 79.5°F and an average low of 64.9°F, with 0.85 inch of rain across the whole month. October, four weeks later, brings 2.20 inches.
What the month does not hand you is warmer water. The marine series off Tavira reads 65.4°F in September, and that number is a mean of daily maxima, so the water over a full day sits a shade cooler still. Swimming is possible, bracing and short. Walking, driving and eating outdoors are where the date pays.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · TAVIRA IN SEPTEMBER
September keeps August’s dry sky and cuts 5.1 degrees off the afternoon high, but the sea reads 65.4°F as a daily-max mean, so plan the month around the town and the light rather than around long swims.
AVG HIGH 79.5°F · 1.9 RAIN DAYS · SEA 65.4°F · 12 H 27 MIN OF DAYLIGHT ON SEP 15
Go for: old-town walking at 79.5°F, a month that expects rain on about two days in thirty, and evenings that need exactly one layer.
Think twice before: building a water-first week around it. The same marine record puts September at 65.4°F, below both August and October.

The town itself, its streets and its beds, belongs to our Tavira guide, and the twelve-month view for the coast sits in the Algarve pages and the Portugal calendar. Every figure here is dated to September and measured at sea level. Where a number could not be verified, we say so instead of rounding something plausible into place.
Tavira weather in September: average highs, lows and rain days
| Measure | September at the Faro station |

| Days with 0.39 in or more | 0.7 |
| Sea surface (daily-max mean) | 65.4°F |

These normals come from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service: station 554 at Faro, 1991-2020, a real thermometer five meters above sea level rather than a model grid cell. Faro sits just west of Tavira on the same sheltered eastern stretch, so the readings carry the short distance well. They do not carry inland. The hills behind the coast run colder and far wetter, and anyone packing for a mountain trail on a coastal reading will regret it.
Rain in an average September totals 0.85 inch and shows up on 1.9 days at 0.04 inch or more. Call it two wet days in thirty. A genuine soaking of 0.39 inch or more averages 0.7 day, which works out to roughly two Septembers in three producing one (est.). Watch the thresholds before you compare with home: IPMA counts at 1 mm and 10 mm, not at the 0.10 inch most US tables use, so the rain-day numbers are not interchangeable.
Between the 79.5°F afternoon and the 64.9°F small hours sits 14.6 degrees, and almost all of that drop lands after dark. Daytime clothing is August’s clothing. Dinner on the Gilão riverfront wants a long sleeve, and a morning walk before nine wants the same, which is the single thing most travelers leave out of the bag. Our packing guide has the rest of the list.
September 15 runs 12 hours 27 minutes of daylight, with the sun setting at 7:40 p.m. local time. That is a real trim on August’s evenings and a real gift compared with the afternoon glare: the light goes long and low from about six. Finish outdoor plans, ferry crossings included, before 7:40 rather than after.
Can you swim in Tavira in September? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Open-Meteo’s marine series, averaged over 2015-2024, puts the sea off Tavira at 65.4°F in September. Read the label with the number: it is a mean of daily maxima, so the average across a full 24 hours is a shade cooler, and any table built on a full-day mean will print something lower. We found no buoy record for this stretch to test it against, so we serve the model figure with its method attached rather than pick a winner among published values.
In practice, 65.4°F is swimmable and nobody will describe it as warm. Expect the sharp intake of breath on entry and a short swim rather than a long float, particularly for children and for anyone who last swam in Florida. The compensation is on land: air at 79.5°F means getting out is pleasant, towels dry fast, and a second dip an hour later is an easier sell than it would be in June.
On wind and swell we have nothing solid. We could not verify a wind or wave record for the eastern Algarve that we would stand behind, so we publish no figure for either. What holds regardless is the geography: Tavira’s swimming beach lies on the ocean side of a barrier island across the Ria Formosa lagoon, so the water you enter is open Atlantic, not sheltered channel.
How busy is Tavira in September? Crowds, prices and the demand peak
No occupancy series and no monthly room rates for Tavira passed our checks, so we crown no month cheap and none expensive. What we can date is the weather, and it moves in September’s favor: 5.1 degrees off August’s afternoon high with rain still under an inch. If a listing waves a shoulder-season discount at you, it is using data we do not have. Pull two quotes, one for the first week of the month and one for the last, and let the gap between them tell you where the peak sat.
Book refundable, and book the car earlier than the room. Flights from the US land at Faro, the same airport whose thermometer supplies the normals above, and a car collected there turns the eastern Algarve into a set of day trips. Our flights guide covers the routings and the car guide covers the tolls. Three nights in Tavira is the shape most first trips take, four if you want a full day on the island and a full day inland.
On the tourist tax, we have to leave a blank. We could not verify a Tavira lodging tax rate, or whether one is charged in September at all, so no percentage and no per-night figure appears from us. Ask the property what it collects and when it collects it, since these charges are usually settled on site rather than inside the booking total. Our trip-cost guide handles the rest of the budget.
One upgrade changes September more than it would change any other month, and it is the car. With measurable rain expected on about two days in thirty, nearly every morning is drivable, and the daylight has already been trimmed to 12 hours 27 minutes. Spending an hour of that waiting between town, beach ferry and the villages inland costs more than the rental does.
Things to do in Tavira in September

August’s heat is what September removes. At 79.5°F the climb to Santa Maria do Castelo and the walk along the Gilão are midday propositions rather than dawn-only ones, and at 0.85 inch the month keeps August’s dry sky while October’s 2.20 inches wait four weeks out. Beach days still work. Town days work considerably better than they did a month earlier.
Ilha de Tavira, the barrier island across the lagoon, is the beach, reached by ferry from Quatro Águas, with that 65.4°F Atlantic on its outer shore. In town the Roman bridge crosses the Gilão into the old quarter, the church of Santa Maria do Castelo stands beside the castle walls at the top of the climb, and the salt pans run flat along the lagoon east of the center.
The water at those places barely notices the calendar. Across the same marine record August reads 66.8°F, September 65.4°F and October 67.3°F, all inside 1.4 degrees. The air does the moving, from 84.6°F down to 73.9°F over those three months. That gap is what makes a September walk out along the salt pans pleasant and the August version of it a chore, while the swim stays roughly the same swim all season.
We found no free-admission day and no dated September event for Tavira that we could stand behind, so we list none. The things that cost nothing do not shift with the month anyway: the Roman bridge, the riverfront gardens, the tracks between the salt pans, and the sand itself once the ferry has landed you. Give the salt-pan tracks the stretch between six and 7:40 p.m., when the light is at its lowest and the heat has gone.
Tavira in September: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts at eight in the old town, while the air is still near its 64.9°F low: over the Roman bridge, up to Santa Maria do Castelo, coffee and the market by ten. Cross to Ilha de Tavira around eleven and swim in the early afternoon, when the water is closest to the daily maximum the 65.4°F figure is built on. Back across by six. Dinner on the riverfront at eight, with the extra layer, because the fall toward 64.9°F begins the moment the sun goes at 7:40.
Day two heads east to the salt pans and the lagoon in the morning, then inland by car after lunch, back for the low light over the Gilão. If the sky turns, and it will on roughly two days of the month, keep it indoors and short: the market, the churches, a two-hour lunch, out again when it clears. A day recording 0.04 inch is a shower, not a washout. Only 0.7 day in an average September delivers 0.39 inch or more.
Tavira in September vs August and October
| Measure | August | September | October |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 84.6°F | 79.5°F | 73.9°F |
| Average low | 67.8°F | 64.9°F | 60.4°F |
| Precipitation | 0.12 in | 0.85 in | 2.20 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 0.2 | 1.9 | 6.0 |
| Sea surface (daily-max mean) | 66.8°F | 65.4°F | 67.3°F |
Air moves 10.7 degrees across the three months, from 84.6°F in August to 73.9°F in October, all from the same IPMA station. Rain moves further: 0.12 inch, then 0.85, then 2.20, with wet days climbing from 0.2 to 1.9 to 6.0. The sea barely participates. Three readings from the same marine model sit inside 1.4 degrees, and September’s 65.4°F is the lowest of them, a result we report rather than smooth over, since a spread that thin in a ten-year average is weak ground for ranking anything.
Shift four weeks later and you trade 5.6 degrees of afternoon air for 4.1 extra rain days and 1.35 extra inches of water falling on you, in return for a 67.3°F sea and thinner competition for a table. Shift four weeks earlier into August and you gain 5.1 degrees of heat and near-total dryness at 0.12 inch, and you lose the part of September that makes the old town walkable at noon.
Is September a good time to visit Tavira?
Yes for walkers, drivers and anyone who found August punishing: 79.5°F afternoons, 0.85 inch of rain across the month, and 12 hours 27 minutes of usable light in the middle of it. No for a water-first family. A sea reading of 65.4°F, generous as a daily-max mean, is cool enough that most swimmers will call it bracing, and none of the three months on the table fixes that.
If the answer came out no, the month to prefer is August rather than October. August gives 84.6°F air, 0.12 inch of rain, 0.2 wet days and a sea 1.4 degrees warmer, at the cost of midday heat you will plan around. October takes wet days to 6.0 and the afternoon to 73.9°F, and its 67.3°F water leads the three by a margin thinner than the model’s own noise.
Of the three months here, September is the only one pairing an afternoon under 80 degrees with rain under an inch, and that pairing is what the date buys you.
The last word
Book the room refundable, collect the car at Faro, and put the ferry to Ilha de Tavira on your first clear morning rather than saving it for the end of the week. The sun comes up at 7:13 a.m. local on September 15, and the hour after it is the closest the month gets to its 64.9°F low, which is when the castle climb and the salt-pan tracks are worth the walk. Decide the swimming separately, with the real number in hand: 65.4°F, measured as a mean of daily maxima.
