Guimarães in July: Weather, Crowds and a Two-Day Plan

July hands Guimarães its longest evenings and its lightest rain of the three summer months our normals cover. The official 1991–2020 figures put the average high at 75.7°F and the average low at 59.9°F, with 0.65 inches of rain spread over about three days. On July 15 the sun is up for 14 hours 54 minutes, and the last of it goes at 21:07 local time.

What that buys is a medieval street grid you can still walk after dinner, in a town founded in the 10th century that became Portugal’s first capital in the 12th. What it costs is company: July falls inside the European summer holiday stretch, and the protected old town measures just 38.2 hectares.

July gives Guimarães light until 21:07 and half of June’s rainfall, so put the walking at each end of the day and accept that you will share the squares.

Go for: long light on granite streets, the driest of the three summer months at 0.65 inches, and dinners outdoors without a jacket.

Think twice before: packing to the 75.7°F figure. It is measured at Porto’s coastal airport, and Guimarães sits inland, where July afternoons run warmer.

Guimarães weather in July: average highs, lows and rain days

Measure July (1991–2020) Reading
Average high 75.7°F Afternoon peak at the measuring station
Average low 59.9°F Reached around dawn
Rainfall 0.65 in Total for the month
Days with 1 mm (0.04 in) or more 3.1 About one day in ten
Days with 10 mm (0.39 in) or more 0.5 About one July in two
Daylight, July 15 14h 54m 06:13 to 21:07 local

Every figure here comes from IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, and specifically from its 1991–2020 normals for station 545 at Porto Pedras Rubras, a real thermometer at 67.7 meters rather than a model grid cell. That station sits on the coast, at the airport. Guimarães lies inland, so July afternoons here run warmer than 75.7°F and winter nights run colder. Take the summer highs as a floor rather than a ceiling.

Rain reaches the gauge on 3.1 days in an average July, counting every day that records at least 1 mm (0.04 inch). A real soaking of 10 mm or more lands on 0.5 day, so roughly one July in two gets one. Those are IPMA’s thresholds, not the 0.10-inch mark used in American tables, and the two counts are not interchangeable. In practice you get two or three damp mornings and 0.65 inches to show for the whole month.

Nearly 16 degrees separate the afternoon from the hour before dawn, and both ends need clothes. A thin long-sleeve layer covers 7 a.m. and the square at 22:00. Short sleeves, water and a hat cover the climb toward the castle at 3 p.m. A packable shell handles the three wet days, though sunscreen does more work in July. Our Portugal packing guide takes care of the rest of the suitcase.

On July 15 the sun rises at 06:13 and sets at 21:07 local time, 14 hours 54 minutes apart. Light shapes a July day here more than heat does. The stretch from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. belongs indoors or under a tree, and the two good walking windows run 7 to 9 in the morning and 7 to 9 at night, once the stone has cooled.

How warm is Guimarães in July?

The month averages a 75.7°F high and a 59.9°F low, a gap of 15.8 degrees between the warmest and coldest hours. Both readings come from that coastal station, and the inland correction pushes the afternoon up and the night down. We found no inland thermometer series for Guimarães itself, so we put no number on the correction. Expect the hot days to run above 75.7°F (est.) and the hour before sunrise to feel genuinely cool.

At 8 a.m. the lanes between the two historic poles are shirt-and-thin-sweater weather, and empty enough to photograph. By 2 p.m. you want the shaded side of the street and a chair. At 21:00 the terraces are short sleeves on most July evenings, and the low only arrives long after you are asleep.

Freezing nights play no part in a Guimarães July. The IPMA normals we read carry no frost-day count for the station, and with a monthly average low of 59.9°F the question stays theoretical. Cold-night arithmetic belongs to the winter entries in the month-by-month series.

How busy is Guimarães in July? Crowds and prices

July sits in the middle of the European summer holiday period, and the town it fills is small: 38.2 protected hectares, with a 129.4-hectare buffer zone around them. We found no occupancy series and no room-rate series for Guimarães, so we crown no month expensive and quote no nightly rate. UNESCO does name one pressure in writing, and it belongs in a July paragraph: gentrification driven by tourism, flagged in its own file as something that may undermine the property over time.

Beds inside the walls are few, and the summer competes with day visitors arriving from Porto and Braga, both close enough for an afternoon. Six to eight weeks of lead time is our editorial call (est.); we could not verify any booking-window figure for the town. If July is one chapter of a longer trip, the northern loop sets out the distances, and the 12-month national verdict puts the season in context.

We could not verify a municipal lodging-tax rate for Guimarães, so we give no percentage: ask what will be added when you check in. The same gap covers the monuments. Our heritage source describes the property, it does not run the visits, so we hold no opening hour and no admission fee for the castle, the palace or anything else in town. Confirm each site’s own hours before you build a morning around it.

One upgrade genuinely changes July, and it is location. A room inside the 38.2-hectare core turns the 21:07 sunset into a ten-minute stroll home from the squares, and it puts you out at 7 a.m. ahead of the coaches. A cheaper bed on the ring road hands both of those hours back to a car. Nineteen legally protected properties stand inside that perimeter, all within walking distance of one another.

Things to do in Guimarães in July

July is the month that lets you use the evening. With 14 hours 54 minutes of daylight on the 15th and measurable rain on only 3.1 days, walking can start at 7 a.m. and start again at 7 p.m., and the squares laid out during the 1498 to 1693 building period look their best under low light. June offers the same stones with 4.9 wet days and just over twice the rainfall.

Inside the walls, the town grew around two poles, both standing from between 950 and 1498: the castle to the north and the monastic complex to the south. Everything between them fits within 38.2 hectares. Outside the walls, the Couros Zone takes its name from the leather tanning once practiced there, and its tanneries, workers’ houses and open spaces from the 19th and early 20th centuries are still in place. Of the nineteen protected properties, ten are National Monuments and nine are of Public Interest.

Those granite ground floors carrying half-timbered upper stories were built that way in the Middle Ages, and the method traveled with Portuguese builders to Africa and the New World. Neither the stone nor the street plan moves with the calendar. The air does. July’s 0.65 inches over the month keep the open ground of Couros and the squares usable nearly every day, where June’s 1.33 inches and 4.9 wet days push more of a visit under a roof.

The public spaces belong to the municipality, so the best of a July evening costs nothing: the medieval layout, the squares, the low streets of Couros. The plan that protects all of it dates from 1994 and was revised in 2015. Most of the building stock is privately owned, so many of the façades you admire are as far inside as you will get.

Guimarães in July: a two-day itinerary

Day one starts at 7 a.m., while the air is still near the 59.9°F low: uphill to the castle end first, then the lanes running south toward the monastic pole before the afternoon builds. Take a long, seated, indoor lunch from 1 to 4. Pick up Couros at 5, when shade returns to its low buildings. Book dinner for 20:30 and the squares are still lit when you walk out at 21:07.

Day two covers whatever you skipped between the two poles, with the ten National Monuments as the shortlist and the 129.4-hectare buffer as the limit of any wandering. If the weather turns, remember the scale of the turn: 3.1 days a month record 1 mm, and only half a day records 10 mm, so a July shower usually means an hour under an arcade. On the rare soaker, Porto and Braga are both within a half-day, and our transport guide has the connections.

Guimarães in July vs June and August

Month Average high Average low Rainfall Days with 1 mm or more
June 72.9°F 58.1°F 1.33 in 4.9
July 75.7°F 59.9°F 0.65 in 3.1
August 76.6°F 60.3°F 1.15 in 3.2

June runs 72.9°F by day and 58.1°F at night, with 1.33 inches over 4.9 wet days. July climbs to 75.7 and 59.9 and drops to 0.65 inches over 3.1 days. August is the warmest of the three at 76.6 and 60.3, with 1.15 inches over 3.2 days. All of it comes from the same IPMA station and the same 1991–2020 period, so the comparison holds. We found no sea-temperature series here, and the town is inland anyway; where a coastal page quotes one, it is an average of daily maxima, slightly warmer than a 24-hour mean.

Shift four weeks earlier and you trade 2.8 degrees of afternoon warmth for a wetter month: June carries twice July’s rainfall and nearly two more wet days. Shift four weeks later and August adds 0.9 degrees while bringing 1.15 inches, almost double July’s total, with the summer crowds unchanged. Of the three, July is the driest by a wide margin. The full files sit at June and August.

Is July a good time to visit Guimarães?

Yes for anyone whose trip is built on walking a small stone town. Rain on one day in ten, 0.65 inches for the month and light from 06:13 to 21:07 add up to the easiest walking conditions the summer offers. No if you want the old town quiet, or if inland heat past 75.7°F flattens you by mid-afternoon. Families with young children will cover the same ground in half the hours, and should plan for it.

When the answer is no, take June ahead of August. Its 72.9°F high is the gentlest of the three months, and the extra 0.68 inch of rain buys cooler afternoons on the climb to the castle. August moves the opposite way: 0.9 degrees hotter than July, nearly double the rainfall, and no relief on the crowds.

No other month in this trio pairs 14 hours 54 minutes of daylight with 0.65 inches of rain, and that pairing is what keeps the medieval layout walkable from breakfast to well past nine at night.

The last word

Decide one thing before anything else: sleep inside the walls. July’s whole gift here is the evening, and a bed in the 38.2-hectare core is what turns a 21:07 sunset into a walk home rather than a drive. One fact to carry up the hill with you: the property was inscribed in 2001 under criteria (ii), (iii) and (iv), with significant boundary changes made in 2023. Walk it once at 7 a.m., before the day’s first coach.
