PORTUGAL · THE ALGARVE · JULY
You have already picked the Algarve, so the open question is the date. In July the thermometer at Faro averages 84.9°F in the afternoon, and measurable rain turns up on 0.2 days. Every council on the coast has lifeguards on its listed beaches from the first of the month to the last. The sea stays at 66.8°F, a tenth of a degree below June.
That mix suits a beach trip built around mornings on the water and long evenings. On July 15 the sun sets at 20:52 Lisbon time. It suits a midday cliff hike less well. If the dates can still move, our month-by-month verdict for Portugal weighs the whole year, and our Algarve guide covers the coast itself.

Every figure here comes from one place unless we say otherwise: IPMA station 554 at Faro, a real thermometer 5 meters (16 feet) above sea level at the eastern end of a coast about 150 km (93 miles) long. Lagos, Sagres and the hills inland sit outside its reach, and high ground runs colder and far wetter. For the questions July does not change, turn to where to stay, getting around and flights from the US.

IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service (Instituto Português do Mar e da Atmosfera), sets the 1991-2020 July normals at Faro at an average high of 84.9°F and an average low of 67.3°F, with 0.04 inches of rain for the whole month. These are station normals from a thermometer on the ground, the same kind of record NOAA publishes for US cities, rather than a reanalysis grid cell averaged over land and sea. Of the three summer months we compare, July posts the warmest afternoons, 0.3°F above August.
Measurable rain, in IPMA’s terms 1 mm (0.04 inch) or more, falls on 0.2 days in an average July: roughly one rainy day spread across five Julys. A downpour of 10 mm (0.39 inch) or more registers 0.0 days. US tables count rain days from 0.10 inch, so these counts do not line up against a Florida chart. Leave the umbrella at home and pack the sunscreen.
From 84.9°F in mid-afternoon to 67.3°F near dawn, the swing is 17.6°F. A light sweater or a cotton overshirt covers a terrace dinner after dark, and anyone heading out on an early paddle will want it at the dock. Everything else in the bag can be summer weight, and our Portugal packing guide goes item by item.
On July 15 the sun rises at 06:23 and sets at 20:52 Lisbon time (05:23 and 19:52 UTC), for about 14 hours 30 minutes of daylight. Portugal runs one hour ahead of UTC in summer. The light starts to drop well after 20:00, so a full beach day still leaves room for a sunset walk before a late dinner.
Can you swim in the Algarve in July? Sea temperature and what it feels like
Open-Meteo’s marine data put the July sea surface off the Algarve at 66.8°F, averaged over 2015-2024. That figure is a mean of daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it runs a shade warmer than a 24-hour average. Tables built on full-day means will show a slightly lower number for the same water, and both can be right.
For a swimmer, 66.8°F water on an 84.9°F afternoon means an 18.1°F drop from air to sea. Expect a sharp breath at the waist, and bring a thin wetsuit top for long snorkels or for children who chill quickly. Lifeguards work all month on the listed beaches of every council: Albufeira from May 15 to October 15, Lagos, Lagoa, Loulé, Faro, Olhão, Tavira, Silves, Aljezur and Vila do Bispo from June 1 to September 30, and one Castro Marim beach from July 1 to August 31.
We found no July wind or swell series for the Algarve coast, so we make no surf call and give no wave heights. On the day, read the lifeguard’s flag on a listed beach and check the water-quality results the national environment agency publishes through the bathing season. Beaches missing from the 2026 official list had no assured lifeguard cover when the order was published.
How busy is the Algarve in July? Crowds and prices
July falls inside the Portuguese school summer break and at the heart of the lifeguarded season, which puts it in peak summer on the calendar. We found no occupancy series and no monthly hotel-rate data, so we crown no month the priciest and put no number on a July room. On the lifeguard calendar, July and August stand together as the two months with every council’s beaches staffed.
Book beds and any guided cave tour early. Without a booking curve we can only estimate: three to four months ahead for a July stay near the beaches you want (est.), and earlier for a specific villa. Rental cars follow the same logic, and our car-rental guide covers pickup and insurance. For a full budget, what a Portugal trip costs sets out the lines.
We could not verify a municipal tourist-tax rate for Algarve stays in July, so we give no amount. Ask your hotel or rental host at booking whether a nightly charge is added at checkout, and whether children are exempt.
Since July 2025, renting a kayak to paddle into the Benagil sea cave alone has been off the table. A licensed guide is now the only way in by paddle, and a guided kayak or paddleboard group may stay up to eight minutes inside, against two minutes for a motorized boat. Compare tour prices across operators before you book. For a July trip, the guided paddle over the boat ride is the one upgrade we would pay for.
Things to do in the Algarve in July

July and August are the only months when every Algarve council has lifeguards on its listed beaches, because the short Castro Marim season opens on July 1. In May and October, Albufeira alone is staffed, so a swim anywhere else on the coast is unsupervised whatever the water temperature says. For a family beach week that roams from Aljezur on the west side to Tavira in the east, July opens the full window.
At Benagil, the national maritime authority’s Edital 019/2024, amended by Edital 009/2025, bans swimming into the cave from the beach or a boat, with or without a float, and bans landing on the beach inside. Motorized boats keep 15 meters (about 49 feet) off the arches and enter by the western arch. Kayaks and paddleboards use the eastern one. At the western tip, the Fortaleza de Sagres opens 09:30 to 17:30, last entry 17:00, and one ticket covers the fortress and the promontory. Ask at the gate for the full adult price.
Between June and August the sea off the coast barely moves: 66.9°F, 66.8°F, 66.8°F. The air climbs instead, with July afternoons at Faro averaging 84.9°F against 80.2°F in June. On the bare Sagres promontory and the cliff paths of Ponta da Piedade, plan the walking for the morning or the evening. The fortress closes at 17:30, which leaves 3 hours 22 minutes of daylight on July 15 before the 20:52 sunset.
The A22, the Via do Infante along the length of the Algarve, costs nothing to drive: Infraestruturas de Portugal keeps its toll rate at zero under Lei n.º 37/2024. That zero rate covers a short list of roads and does not apply to Portuguese motorways in general. Lifeguard cover on listed beaches is free too. One offer does not apply to visitors: the Sagres fortress waives its ticket on Sundays and public holidays until 14:00 only for residents of Portugal.
The Algarve in July: a two-day itinerary
Day one starts near first light, 06:23. Take the earliest guided paddle to Benagil you can book, before the afternoon heat, then swim at a listed beach nearby while the lifeguards are on duty. Around the 84.9°F peak of the afternoon, head indoors for a long lunch. From about 19:00, drive west on the toll-free A22 toward Lagos and walk the cliffs at Ponta da Piedade for the 20:52 sunset. Book dinner for after 21:00.
Day two goes to Sagres for the 09:30 opening of the Fortaleza, while the promontory is still mild. Spend the afternoon on a lifeguarded beach in Vila do Bispo or Lagos, both staffed June 1 to September 30. Rain is unlikely to change anything: at Faro, 0.2 July days reach 1 mm and none reach 10 mm, though Sagres sits far from that thermometer. If the sea is too rough to paddle, the operator makes the call, so choose a tour that lets you move the slot to day two and keep Sagres as the swap.
The Algarve in July vs June and August
| Faro normals | June | July | August |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 80.2°F | 84.9°F | 84.6°F |
| Average low | 64.0°F | 67.3°F | 67.8°F |
| Precipitation | 0.20 in | 0.04 in | 0.12 in |
| Days with 1 mm or more | 0.8 | 0.2 | 0.2 |
| Sea surface (mean daily max) | 66.9°F | 66.8°F | 66.8°F |
At Faro, July’s average high of 84.9°F sits 4.7°F above June’s 80.2°F and 0.3°F above August’s 84.6°F. Nights follow a different line: 64.0°F in June, 67.3°F in July, 67.8°F in August. Rain drops from 0.20 inches over 0.8 days in June to 0.04 inches over 0.2 days in July, and August returns 0.12 inches over the same 0.2 days. The sea surface reads 66.9°F in June and 66.8°F in both July and August.
Move four weeks earlier and you trade 4.7°F of afternoon heat for cooler nights, a slightly wetter month and a sea within a tenth of a degree. You also lose lifeguards at the one Castro Marim beach whose season starts on July 1. Move four weeks later and little shifts: August nights run 0.5°F warmer and its rain total triples to 0.12 inches, while the sea and lifeguard cover match July. Our June and August guides run the same comparison from their side.
Is July a good time to visit the Algarve?
Yes, for a beach and water vacation: lifeguards on every council’s listed beaches, rain on 0.2 days and about 14 hours 30 minutes of daylight. Families tied to school-holiday dates can book it with confidence. No, if the plan leans on long midday hikes over exposed ground, or if you are chasing the warmest sea of the summer: at 66.8°F, July water runs no warmer than June’s 66.9°F.
If the answer is no, look at June. Afternoons average 80.2°F, the sea sits at 66.9°F, and lifeguards cover every council except that one short-season Castro Marim beach. The cost is 0.8 rain days instead of 0.2, still less than one damp day in the month. Our June guide has the rest.
Of the three summer months, July alone pairs the warmest average high at Faro, 84.9°F, with the smallest rain total, 0.04 inches.
The last word
Lock the guided Benagil paddle and a bed near a staffed beach first, and the rest of a July trip settles around the 20:52 sunset. For the widest choice of lifeguarded sand from a single base, Albufeira lists 25 staffed beaches for 2026, covered from May 15 to October 15. Then pack a light layer for the terrace, and let the evenings run long.
