Portugal in May: Weather, the 62°F Sea and Crowds Before the June Rush

Sunset in Lisbon lands at 8:28pm on May 1 and 8:55pm by the 31st, and that one line explains most of the month. May is the first month our year-round verdict grades best: 69°F afternoons in the capital, six rain days, national lodging running at about 66% of the August peak. Everything is open. Almost nothing is full.

The catch is the water. The Atlantic sits near 62°F off the south coast, which is wetsuit temperature rather than swimming temperature, whatever the brochure photograph implies. Where to go in Portugal in May: four regions, four verdicts

Lisbon & the center: 69°F days, six rain days

The capital reads 69°F by day and 58°F at night, with about six rainy days spread across 44 mm, which usually means a passing band twice a week rather than a lost afternoon. Dinner outdoors still works at nine o’clock. Jacarandas begin throwing purple over the squares late in the month (est.). The Algarve: 70°F, five rain days, a 62°F sea

Faro posts the country’s kindest numbers this month: 70°F days, 60°F nights, five rain days and just 27 mm of rain. The cliff path above Praia da Marinha is a pleasure in May and a punishment in August. Restaurants in the beach towns have reopened, and June’s rates have not landed yet (est.). Porto, the Douro & the North: green vines, 11 rain days

Porto trades weather for greenery: 68°F afternoons, 54°F nights, and 11 rain days carrying 102 mm, more than double Lisbon’s ration. The Douro terraces are at their greenest in May, vines in flower, no presses running and no harvest traffic. Pack a real shell rather than a fashion jacket, and treat the port lodges across the river in Gaia as your wet-afternoon bench. Weekday train seats up the valley are still easy to find at this point in the year (est.).

The Alentejo: wildflowers, storks and driving weather

Between the Tagus and the Spanish border, May is the plain at its most generous: poppies and yellow broom along the verges, storks nesting on half the chimneys in Évora, cork oaks not yet baked to August brown. Inland afternoons run warmer than the coast (est.), which here means comfortable walking instead of the furnace that closes the region down in July.

This is driving country first, dark-sky country second. Portugal’s toll system is the one piece of homework to do before you collect keys at the airport counter: the car rules spell out what the rental desk will not.

The evening dividend. Sunset slides from 8:28pm to 8:55pm across the month, so a day trip that starts at four still ends in daylight. For anyone stumbling off an overnight flight from the East Coast, that reshapes day one: a slow morning, a late start, and a square still bright at half past eight. Portugal shifts its clocks in late March and late October, so by May the gap from New York is the familiar five hours.

The May calendar. Fátima draws its largest pilgrimage of the year in mid-May (dates est.), and rooms within an hour of the sanctuary tighten around it. Coimbra’s student festival takes over that city for roughly a week early in the month (est.), and Barcelos holds its Festa das Cruzes in the same stretch (est.). None of this demands planning around. It does explain why a Tuesday hotel search sometimes comes back empty.

The booking squeeze. American Memorial Day trips, European long weekends and the general drift toward shoulder-season travel all land in these four weeks, and the mid-range hotels with terraces go first (est.). May is the month for travelers whose calendar isn’t written by a school district. You get light until 8:55pm, a country running at two-thirds of its August load, and an Algarve cliff path you can walk at noon without regret. You also get 62°F water, and no amount of optimism warms it. Bring the wetsuit or bring the walking shoes.
