Faro in April: Weather, Sea Temperature, Crowds and a Two-Day Plan

April puts Faro at 69.3°F by day and 54.3°F at night, with 1.54 inches of rain spread over about five wet days. That is the eastern Algarve’s spring in one line: warm enough to walk from breakfast to dinner, cool enough to want a sweater on a terrace, and dry enough that a week here rarely loses more than one morning.

What April takes away is the water. The sea off Faro averages 63.5°F, and four weeks of sunshine do not fix that. It gives back room to move: the lagoon boats go out without a line, the walled town is comfortable at noon, and the summer flight schedules have not filled. If the beach is the whole point of the trip, our month-by-month verdict for Portugal makes the case for going later.

Go for: old-town and lagoon walking at 69.3°F, light that holds to 20:08, salt-pan birding, and a whole month that averages 1.54 inches of rain.

Think twice before: booking April for swimming. At 63.5°F the water is a quick dip or a wetsuit, and May moves it by a tenth of a degree.

One caveat before the numbers: they are measured at Faro, on the coast. The Monchique hills inland run colder and far wetter, and the western Algarve keeps its own weather, so nobody should pack for a mountain trail on a sea-level reading.

Every figure here comes from IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, at station 554 in Faro: a real thermometer 5 meters (16 feet) above sea level, averaged over 1991 to 2020. That matters, because a model grid cell and a station can disagree by several degrees on the overnight low. The normal April high is 69.3°F and the normal low 54.3°F, with 1.54 inches of rain for the whole month.

5.3 days in an average April record at least 0.04 inch of rain, and 1.3 of them reach 0.39 inch or more. In practice that means something measurable falls about one day in six, and one proper soaking lands somewhere in the month. IPMA counts with its own thresholds, not the 0.10-inch cutoff most US climate tables use, so these counts do not swap with the ones on an American page.

Day and night sit a full 15 degrees apart, 69.3°F down to 54.3°F. Pack for both ends: one light layer for the afternoon, a real sweater or windbreaker for dinner outdoors, and shoes that handle cobbles. Rooms in older Portuguese buildings often run on nothing warmer than a portable radiator, so ask before booking if you sleep cold. Our packing guide has the full list.

April 15 brings 13 hours 13 minutes of daylight, the sun up at 06:55 and down at 20:08 local time (calculated in UTC and converted to Lisbon time, which runs one hour ahead in April). Plan around the second number. A beach afternoon can run until seven and still leave an hour of light, and an outdoor dinner at eight starts before sunset rather than after it.

Can you swim in Faro in April? Sea temperature and what it feels like

The sea surface off Faro averages 63.5°F in April, from Open-Meteo’s marine series across 2015 to 2024. Read the fine print on that figure: it is built from daily maxima, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour mean, and any table that averages the whole day will print a lower number for the same water. We serve the warmer of the two readings and say which one it is.

At 63.5°F the Atlantic is a dip, not an afternoon. Most visitors from the US find it cold on entry and workable after a minute of swimming hard, which is a different holiday from floating. Surf and kite schools along this coast put spring students in full wetsuits, so rent one if the plan involves being in the water longer than a photograph takes.

We found no April wind or wave series for Faro, so we publish no figure for either. Spring rain on this coast arrives in Atlantic fronts rather than afternoon heat storms, and the wind comes with the front. For surf conditions on the exposed west coast, our Sagres guide is the better address. Faro sits behind a chain of barrier islands and rarely sees the same swell.

How busy is Faro in April? Crowds, prices and booking

April falls between Faro’s quiet winter and its summer peak, and the weather record is the part we can put numbers on: 69.3°F days against March’s 66.0°F, 1.54 inches of rain against March’s 1.84. We found no occupancy series and no monthly hotel rates for the city, so we crown no month cheapest and none dearest. Treat April as shoulder season by the calendar, and price your own dates against the same nights in June.

With no lead-time data to quote, the advice is an order rather than a number: settle the rental car before the room. Faro airport is the Algarve’s front door, and most of what this month is good for, from Tavira to the salt pans to the coast west of town, needs wheels for part of the day. Our flights guide covers how Americans get here, and the car guide covers the tolls and the insurance line that catches people at the desk.

We could not verify a municipal tourist tax rate for Faro, so we give no per-night figure. Several Portuguese cities do charge one and collect it at checkout rather than through the booking site, so ask the property directly and leave room in the budget. Our trip-cost guide handles the rest of the daily arithmetic.

The one line worth paying up on in April is a room that heats. Nights average 54.3°F, and a cold bedroom undoes a 69.3°F afternoon faster than rain does. A sea view earns less this month than a radiator that works, and a heated pool, where a property has one, earns more than an unheated one ever will at this time of year.

Things to do in Faro in April

April is when the old town is comfortable at midday. At 69.3°F you can cross the walled center, climb to the cathedral roof and still want lunch outside at one o’clock. May’s normal high of 74.3°F already starts pushing that same walk toward the morning, and the shade hunting begins with it.

The lagoon is the reason to base here. Ria Formosa wraps Faro in salt pans, tidal channels and barrier islands, and small boats leave the pier below the old town for Ilha Deserta, the empty one, and Ilha da Culatra, the one with a fishing village on it. In town, Vila Adentro holds the cathedral and the municipal museum within a few blocks, and the bone chapel at the Igreja do Carmo is the sight everyone photographs. We could not verify current fares, sailing times or opening hours, so we quote none: check the operator and the churches the week you travel.

None of those places change with the season. The air around them does. Water at 63.5°F under air at 69.3°F leaves less than 6 degrees between them in April, which makes a lagoon boat a jacket-and-sunscreen outing rather than a swimming one. Spring is also when the salt pans are busiest with birds, flamingos included, and when the flat tracks around Ludo and Quinta do Lago are dry underfoot without being baked.

Free in April: the circuit of the town walls, the marina promenade, the salt-pan tracks, and Praia de Faro at the end of the causeway, where the sand runs for miles and April keeps most of it empty. Admission prices for the museum and the bone chapel exist and we could not verify them, so we name no figure rather than guess at one.

Faro in April: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Out at 8 for the walled town while the stone is still cool: cathedral first, then the museum in the old convent. Lunch by the marina around 1, in the warmest stretch of a 69.3°F day. Take an afternoon boat across to Ilha Deserta for sand and a long walk, and be back in town by six. Dinner at eight happens in daylight, since the sun holds until 20:08.

Day two goes east to Tavira, a short run by road or rail, for the Roman bridge, the market and a barrier island of its own, with the evening back in Faro (our Tavira guide has the detail). If one of April’s 5.3 wet days lands on you, flip the order: the bone chapel, the museum and the covered market absorb a morning indoors, fronts here move through rather than settle in, and the boat keeps for whichever day the wind drops.

Faro in April vs March and May

Measure March April May
Average high 66.0°F 69.3°F 74.3°F
Average low 51.4°F 54.3°F 59.0°F
Precipitation 1.84 in 1.54 in 1.03 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 5.6 5.3 3.8
Sea surface 60.9°F 63.5°F 63.4°F

March runs 3.3 degrees cooler by day and 0.30 inch wetter, with much the same count of wet days, 5.6 against 5.3. May is the jump on land: 74.3°F afternoons and 3.8 wet days, a third less rain than April. In the water, almost nothing happens between April and May. The sea reads 63.5°F and then 63.4°F, a tenth of a degree apart, which is well inside the noise of a ten-year average. March’s 60.9°F is the reading that genuinely feels colder.

Shifting four weeks later buys 5.0 degrees of daytime warmth and 1.5 fewer wet days, and costs nothing in sea temperature. Shifting four weeks earlier saves no rain days at all and takes 2.6 degrees off the water. Beaches and long dry stretches point to May on every line except the water. Walking, birds and a town not yet in summer service point to April, and our Algarve guide covers where the coast changes character.

Is April a good time to visit Faro?

Yes for walkers, birders and anyone who wants the Algarve at a workable temperature. No for swimmers: 63.5°F reads the same whether or not the sun is out, and waiting three weeks changes it by a tenth of a degree. Families whose whole plan is a beach club should look later in the year. Couples whose plan is a lagoon boat, a bone chapel and dinner outdoors at eight have picked the right four weeks.

If the answer is no, take May rather than June: 74.3°F by day, 3.8 wet days, and the sea exactly where April left it. We have no rate data for either month, so we shift for dryness and not for price, and we say so rather than pretend to a bargain we cannot document.

April’s own argument is the pairing of a walkable 69.3°F and a lagoon you can spend all day on without going into it. That combination does not survive May’s afternoons in the same shape.

The last word

Book April for the land and not the water, and the month pays out. Spread 1.54 inches across 5.3 wet days and the average wet day gets about 0.29 inch, which is a morning indoors rather than a lost trip. Settle the car before the room, ask the property about heating for those 54.3°F nights, and keep the island boat for whichever morning the wind drops. Then eat outside at eight, with an hour of daylight still to burn.
