TAVIRA · FEBRUARY · ALGARVE
Tavira in February averages 62.6°F by day and 47.8°F at night, with 1.65 inches of rain spread across the month. That is jacket-at-dawn, shirt-at-lunch weather in a town built of whitewash and salt, and it is the driest month of the winter run here, drier than January by 0.29 inch.
What the date costs you is the water and the clock. The sea off the barrier islands sits at 61.3°F, cold enough that swimming turns into a dare rather than a plan, and the sun is gone at 18:12, leaving 10 hours 53 minutes to work with on February 15. In exchange, the sandbars run empty, the salt pans fill with wintering birds, and the Gilão quays belong to the people who live on them.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · TAVIRA
February gives Tavira its driest month of the winter at 1.65 inches and its most comfortable midday walking at 62.6°F, and takes the swimming away: the sea reads 61.3°F.

Every figure here comes from two records. The air numbers are IPMA’s 1991-2020 normals from station 554 at Faro, a thermometer standing 5.0 meters above sea level rather than a model grid cell, and Faro sits just west of Tavira on the same sheltered eastern stretch of coast. The water number is a marine model average for 2015-2024. The readings travel well along this shoreline and badly inland: the high ground behind the Algarve runs colder and a good deal wetter than anything below.

IPMA, the national weather service, puts February on this coast at an average high of 62.6°F and an average low of 47.8°F, with 1.65 inches of rain over the month. Those are 1991-2020 normals from the Faro station, five meters above the sea and a few miles west of Tavira, and they are the nearest long instrument record to the town. Carry them inland at your own risk.
Rain arrives 5.4 days in an average February, meaning roughly one day in five turns wet, and 1.4 of those days log 0.39 inch or more. In practice that reads as four passing showers and one genuine soaking. One catch on the counting: IPMA measures against a 1 mm threshold (0.04 inch), while US tables usually start at 0.10 inch, so these day counts do not swap with the ones on your home forecast.
Dawn to mid-afternoon covers 14.8 degrees, from 47.8°F to 62.6°F, and that spread decides the bag more than the activities do. A windproof layer for the quays and any boat crossing, a shirt for lunch outside at one o’clock, something warmer for the walk back after dark, and shoes that handle wet cobbles on the 5.4 days. Our packing guide runs the full list for a Portuguese winter.
On February 15 the sun clears the horizon at 07:19 and drops at 18:12 local time, Portugal staying on UTC through the winter, for 10 hours 53 minutes of daylight. That is enough for a market morning and a full afternoon on the sand, and not enough to add an inland drive to the same day. Dinner in February is always after dark.
Can you swim in Tavira in February? Sea temperature and what it feels like
The sea surface off Tavira averages 61.3°F in February in the Open-Meteo marine record for 2015-2024. Read the fine print: that average is built from daily maxima, the warmest reading of each day, so it sits a shade above a true 24-hour mean. The air above it averages 62.6°F, so water and air are within about a degree of each other all month.
At 61.3°F you are in cold-water territory. People do go in off Ilha de Tavira, in and out inside a few minutes, and anyone planning to swim lengths wants a wetsuit and boots. With children, February means a paddle at the tideline and nothing beyond it. We have no separate reading for the Ria Formosa channels behind the islands, only for the open sea, so we make no claim that the lagoon runs warmer than the ocean.
We found no February wind or wave series for this stretch of coast, so we publish no averages for either. The sea figure also says nothing about what the wind does to an exposed boat deck, and the crossing to the islands is exposed: the number that matters out there is the 47.8°F morning low plus whatever is blowing across it. Check the forecast the night before rather than the monthly normal.
How busy is Tavira in February? Low season, booking and the tourist tax
February falls between the New Year break and Easter, which puts it squarely in the Algarve’s low season. That is a calendar fact, and it is as far as we can take it: we looked for a month-by-month occupancy or room-rate series for Tavira and found none, so we crown no month the cheapest and quote no percentage off high summer.
Without a rate series, the booking question here is supply rather than price. Some restaurants and small guesthouses on this coast take a winter break, and we could not verify which Tavira addresses close in February or for how long, so confirm directly before you fly. Two to three weeks of lead time is usually enough for a February room in a town this size (est.). Our where-to-stay guide sorts the regions, and the trip-cost page holds the budget arithmetic.
On the tourist tax, we have nothing verified for Tavira: no rate, no collection period, no exemption list. So we give no per-night figure and no annual cap. Ask the property at the time of booking, and read know before you go for the national rules we did check.
The one line worth paying up for in a February trip is the car. With the light gone at 18:12 you get one real excursion per day, and a rental makes that excursion the salt pans, Cacela Velha above the lagoon or a morning in Faro instead of a bus timetable. Our car guide covers tolls and insurance, and getting around has the train option for anyone who would rather not drive.
Things to do in Tavira in February: Ilha de Tavira, Praia do Barril and the salt pans

Midday comfort is what February hands you and the summer months cannot: 62.6°F is walking weather, so the climb to the castle walls and the length of the Barril causeway cost nothing in sweat. Winter is also when the Ria Formosa’s birdlife concentrates, with flamingos, spoonbills and waders working the salt pans at low tide, a short walk east of the center.
The boat to Ilha de Tavira goes from Quatro Águas, just east of town, outside the summer months. Praia do Barril is reached from Pedras d’el Rei, on foot along the causeway or on the small train that runs beside it, with the old tuna anchors standing in the dunes behind the sand. In town: the Roman bridge over the Gilão, Santa Maria do Castelo, the castle garden and the riverfront market. We could not verify February timetables or fares for the ferry or the beach train, so check the operator the day before you go.
Barrier-island sand is the same sand in any month. February changes the air over it, 62.6°F by mid-afternoon and 47.8°F at first light, and the water at its edge, 61.3°F. The tide still pulls the lagoon back to channels and mudflats twice a day, and it does so this month under a lot of open sky: 1.65 inches falling across 5.4 days leaves the rest of the calendar dry.
Much of a February day in Tavira costs nothing at all: the bridge, the riverfront gardens, the market aisles, the dike walk out to the salt pans, the sea wall at Cabanas, the beaches themselves. We could not verify winter admission prices for the castle, the churches or the town museum, so we list no ticket figure for any of them.
Tavira in February: a two-day itinerary
Day one keys to a 07:19 sunrise and an 18:12 sunset. Coffee and the market from 9 to 10, while the air is still climbing out of the 47.8°F low. The old town, the church and the castle garden from 10 to 12. Lunch outside around 1, when the thermometer is nearest 62.6°F. The boat across to Ilha de Tavira, or the walk out at Barril, from 2 to 5. Then the bridge at a quarter to six for the last of the light, and dinner indoors once it goes.
Day two runs east: the Cabanas boardwalk, Cacela Velha on its bluff, and the salt pans on the way back at low tide, which is the birding hour. If the weather turns, and 1.4 days in an average February bring 0.39 inch or more, trade the boardwalk for the covered market, the churches and a drive west to Faro, all of which work in rain. Keep the island crossing for the clear day.
Tavira in February vs January and March
| January | February | March | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 61.3°F | 62.6°F | 66.0°F |
| Average low | 46.9°F | 47.8°F | 51.4°F |
| Precipitation | 1.94 in | 1.65 in | 1.84 in |
| Days with 0.04 in or more | 6.0 | 5.4 | 5.6 |
| Sea surface | 62.0°F | 61.3°F | 60.9°F |
Across the three months the air climbs and the water falls. January runs 61.3°F by day and 46.9°F at night, February 62.6°F and 47.8°F, March 66.0°F and 51.4°F, all on the same IPMA series. The sea goes the other way in the marine record: 62.0°F in January, 61.3°F in February, 60.9°F in March. February is the driest of the three at 1.65 inches, against 1.94 in January and 1.84 in March.
Shift four weeks later and you buy 3.4°F of afternoon air and roughly an extra hour of daylight by mid-March (est.), and you pay 0.4°F of sea temperature and 0.19 inch of rain for it. March is the better walking month and the colder swimming one, though neither is a swimming month. Go the other way and January costs a degree by day, adds 0.29 inch of rain, and holds the warmest water of the three at 62.0°F, which is last summer’s heat draining out. January has its own page.
Is February a good time to visit Tavira?
Yes, if the trip is built on walking, eating and light: 62.6°F afternoons, 5.4 wet days, and an old town running at its own speed with no queue at the bridge. No, if anyone has packed a swimsuit with intent. A 61.3°F sea and a 47.8°F dawn do not add up to a beach week, whatever the photograph of the sandbars promised.
If the answer came out no, the fix is later in the year rather than next month: March’s water is colder still at 60.9°F, and across the three months we have normals for, the sea never crosses 62.0°F. Our best-time page ranks the whole Portuguese year, and the Algarve guide covers the coast when it warms up.
What February alone does on this stretch: it is the driest month of the winter at 1.65 inches, it holds more sea warmth than the March that follows, and it puts wintering flamingos on the salt pans within walking distance of a café table.
The last word
Decide on the water first, because everything else about a February trip here works. If nobody needs to swim, book the room a fortnight out (est.), take the car for one excursion a day, and accept that dinner starts after dark. One number that has not come up yet: with 5.4 wet days in an average February, about 23 of the month’s days record no measurable rain at the Faro gauge. Pack the windproof layer, not the swimsuit.
