GUIMARÃES · JUNE · FIRST CAPITAL OF PORTUGAL
The longest evenings of the year fall in June. On the 15th the sun comes up at 5:59 a.m. and sets at 9:11 p.m. local time, fifteen hours and twelve minutes of light over a walled town small enough to cross in a morning. Afternoons average 72.9°F and nights settle at 58.1°F, so the lanes between the castle and the old squares stay comfortable at the hour when a July visitor is still waiting for the heat to break.
Rain has not left the north, it has thinned: 1.33 inches across the month over 4.9 days carrying measurable rain, against 3.37 inches and 8.9 such days in May. July is drier still at 0.65 inch. June therefore sits in the middle of a three-month run, and the trade is plain. Cooler climbs than July, a wetter sky than July, more daylight than either neighbor. If the trip is already shaped around Porto and the north, the only question left is whether four weeks either way buys you something.

THE MONTH AT A GLANCE · GUIMARÃES IN JUNE
June gives Guimarães its longest evenings and a little over half of May’s wet days, so two or three nights in the walled center go further this month than in either neighbor, provided you accept rain on roughly one day in six.
IPMA 1991-2020 NORMALS · COASTAL STATION, INLAND TOWN · 4.9 WET DAYS IN 30
Go for: daylight to 9:11 p.m. over a 38.2-hectare medieval center, afternoons at 72.9°F, and 2.04 inches less rain than May.
Think twice before: booking June for a guaranteed dry week: 4.9 days record measurable rain, and one of them normally brings 0.39 inch or more.

Every figure here comes from one thermometer: IPMA’s station 545 at Porto Pedras Rubras, the coastal airport, 67.7 m above sea level, averaged over 1991 to 2020. Guimarães sits inland of it. Inland means warmer summer afternoons and colder winter nights than a coastal runway records, so read the June highs below as an anchor rather than a promise. We found no station series inside the town itself, and no water temperature of any kind, because Guimarães is not a swimming destination.

IPMA, the Portuguese national weather service, publishes the 1991 to 2020 June normals as 72.9°F by day, 58.1°F by night and 1.33 inches of precipitation across the month. Those are measured values from a real instrument at a known altitude of 67.7 m, not a reanalysis grid cell averaged over several miles of landscape. The distinction is worth a line in a guide, because a station reading and a model reading do not carry the same weight when you pack.
An average June records 4.9 days with at least 0.04 inch of rain, roughly one day in six, and 0.9 day reaching 0.39 inch or more. So a single genuine soaking is the month’s normal allowance, and the rest arrives in short bursts rather than gray all-day weather. One caution on the counts: IPMA works to 1 mm and 10 mm thresholds, while American tables usually start at 0.10 inch. The two lists are not interchangeable, and a US-style count for June would come out lower.
The spread between high and low is 14.8°F, wide enough that 7 a.m. in a stone lane and 4 p.m. in an open square are two different climates. Carry one layer you can shed: a light sweater or shell for the first hour and the last two, short sleeves for everything in between. Rain gear can be thin given 4.9 wet days. Our packing guide has the full Portugal list.
Fifteen hours and twelve minutes of daylight changes the shape of a day more than the temperature does. Sunrise at 5:59 a.m. puts the castle hill in light long before the first coach parks. Sunset at 9:11 p.m. leaves the squares usable after dinner, with photographic light holding until close to nine and a long blue hour after it. For a short trip, that is two extra usable hours per night against a spring visit.
How warm is Guimarães in June, morning and afternoon?
At the coastal station the June mean maximum is 72.9°F and the mean minimum 58.1°F, a gap of 14.8°F within a single day. Guimarães lies inland, and IPMA’s own note on the station says inland sites run warmer on summer afternoons and colder on winter nights. Expect the town’s afternoons to sit at or above 72.9°F, then, with no city thermometer to quantify the offset. We do not have one, so we do not invent a correction.
In practice: a walk at 7 a.m. starts in the high fifties, cool on bare arms wherever the granite keeps its shade. By 2 p.m. the open squares are in the low seventies and crossing a street for an arcade is worth doing. Sleeves early, sun protection from late morning, and the second layer back on once the sun drops behind the castle hill toward nine. Nothing in this month calls for a coat.
Freezing nights are not a June concern at an average low of 58.1°F, and the normals carry no count of nights at or below 32°F for the month. What we lack is a daily extreme series for the town, so we cannot quote the coldest June night on record and will not guess at one. The lowest figure we stand behind is the monthly average minimum.
How busy is Guimarães in June? Crowds, booking and the tourist tax
We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Guimarães, so we crown no month expensive and none cheap. What the calendar does say is that June opens the northern Portuguese summer: rain has fallen from May’s 8.9 wet days to 4.9, and the evenings run to 9:11 p.m., two conditions that fill a small town’s terraces well before the European school holidays are all under way. National ranges sit in our Portugal cost guide.
If your dates are fixed, book the bed before anything else. The protected core covers 38.2 hectares, and everyone who wants to sleep inside the walls is aiming at the same small footprint. Six to eight weeks out is our working lead for a June weekend (est., editorial judgment, not a measured figure). If the dates are loose, reverse the order and price the flight first: most American itineraries reach the town from Porto, the same airport that supplies these normals. Flights from the US and getting around cover the rest.
We could not verify whether Guimarães levies a municipal tourist tax, or at what rate, so we quote no percentage and no per-night amount. Ask the property when you book, and hold a few euros a night in the budget until the answer comes back in writing.
The one upgrade that changes a June trip is location rather than luxury. With sunset at 9:11 p.m., dinner finishes in daylight and the walk back matters: a room inside the 38.2-hectare property turns a 10 p.m. stroll through lit stone squares into the best hour of the day, while a cheaper bed out on the ring road turns the same hour into a taxi fare. Across a month with 4.9 wet days in 30, being able to step out twice, once between showers, is what you are paying for.
Things to do in Guimarães in June: the castle hill, the Couros Zone and the old squares

What June gives that May does not is four fewer wet days and 2.04 inches less rain, spread under evenings that run to 9:11 p.m. What it gives that July does not is an afternoon 2.8°F cooler on a hill you have to climb on foot. For a town whose whole pleasure is walking between two medieval poles and stopping when something catches the eye, that pairing is the argument for the date.
The shape to walk is old and simple. Intra-muros Guimarães grew around two poles, both standing from between 950 and 1498: the castle to the north and the monastic complex to the south, with a medieval street layout between them that survived the grand houses and civic building of 1498 to 1693. Outside the walls, the Couros Zone keeps the tanneries, workers’ houses and open spaces of the leather trade that named both the quarter and the river. Nineteen properties inside the perimeter are legally protected, ten as National Monuments and nine of public interest.
Stone has no season, and the granite ground floors carrying half-timbered upper stories, a method developed here and carried to Portuguese colonies in Africa and the New World, look the same in February as in June. What moves is the 14.8°F you walk through between dawn and mid-afternoon, and the number of hours the outdoor half of the visit is pleasant. In June that stretch runs from about 7 a.m. to past 9 p.m., and the roofless spaces of Couros are usable on roughly 25 of the month’s 30 days.
The public spaces belong to the municipality, so the squares laid out between 1498 and 1693 and the lanes linking the two poles cost nothing at any hour, and in June they hold light past nine. UNESCO adds a caution worth carrying in the pocket: it singles out the Couros Zone as needing an urgent conservation and rehabilitation strategy, and names tourism-driven gentrification as a pressure that may undermine the property over time. Walk it, spend in it, and remember that a lived-in quarter is not a stage set.
Guimarães in June: a two-day itinerary
Day one takes the northern pole first. Be on the castle hill between 8 and 10, when the air still sits nearer the night’s 58.1°F than the afternoon’s 72.9°F and the climb costs nothing in sweat. Drop into the walled center for the rest of the morning, eat indoors from 1 to 3 while the day peaks, then walk the squares of the 1498 to 1693 expansion from 5, when the shadows come back across the granite. Dinner at 8 still runs in daylight, and the walk after it lasts until 9:11.
Day two starts lower down, in Couros, where the tanneries and workers’ houses of the 19th and early 20th centuries make a flat, shaded hour before the heat arrives. Give the southern pole, the monastic complex, the late morning, and keep the afternoon loose. If the sky turns, and it does on about one June day in six, the arcaded lanes of the old center still walk well under 0.04 inch of rain, and a day trip to Porto or Braga is the standby worth holding.
Guimarães in June vs May and July
| IPMA 1991-2020 | May | June | July |
|---|---|---|---|
| Average high | 68.5°F | 72.9°F | 75.7°F |
| Average low | 54.1°F | 58.1°F | 59.9°F |
| Precipitation | 3.37 in | 1.33 in | 0.65 in |
| Days with 0.04 in (1 mm) or more | 8.9 | 4.9 | 3.1 |
Set side by side, the three months move steadily on temperature and sharply on rain. May averages 68.5°F by day and 54.1°F at night, with 3.37 inches over 8.9 wet days. June lifts the day to 72.9°F and the night to 58.1°F while cutting rain to 1.33 inches over 4.9 days. July adds another 2.8°F by day and 1.8°F by night, at 0.65 inch over 3.1 days. No sea temperature enters the comparison, because there is no sea: the town is inland, and the station behind these normals stands on the coast at Porto.
Shift back four weeks to May and you buy cooler afternoons, paying with more than twice June’s rain across nearly twice the wet days. Shift forward to July and you buy the driest sky of the three, paying with afternoons at 75.7°F on that same climb and nights at 59.9°F in the room. Our May page and our July page carry each month in full, and the national calendar puts them against the rest of the country.
Is June a good time to visit Guimarães?
Yes for anyone who wants long evenings in a compact medieval town and does not need a guaranteed dry week. Afternoons at 72.9°F, 4.9 wet days out of 30 and light until 9:11 p.m. make an efficient two or three nights, and they make the castle climb a pleasure rather than a chore. No if the trip is built on one fixed sunny day, because one June day in six records measurable rain and 0.9 day brings 0.39 inch or more.
When the dry week is the requirement, take July: 0.65 inch of rain over 3.1 days, bought with afternoons at 75.7°F and nights at 59.9°F. When cooler air matters more than a dry sky, May runs 68.5°F by day, and 8.9 wet days is the price of it. Anyone touring Porto and the north on one trip will find June the easiest of the three to plan around.
What June alone offers is the year’s longest daylight, fifteen hours and twelve minutes on the 15th, over a 38.2-hectare center you can walk end to end twice before the light goes.
The last word
Book two nights, and put the castle hill in the first morning rather than the last: the same slope at 8 a.m. and at 4 p.m. is two different walks in a month with 14.8°F between its low and its high. One fact to carry up it. The perimeter under your feet was inscribed in 2001 under criteria (ii), (iii) and (iv), and it was redrawn in 2023 with significant boundary modifications, so the 38.2 hectares you are walking, inside a buffer of 129.4 more, is a younger map than the town it protects.
