Ericeira in June: Weather, Rain Days and How It Compares to May and July

June hands Ericeira the driest weather it has seen since winter and the longest days it will get all year. The 1991-2020 normals give the month an average afternoon high of 79.0°F, an average low of 61.7°F, and 0.53 inch of rain spread across two wet days. Four weeks earlier, May takes 2.00 inches.

What June withholds is the top of the range. July’s afternoons average 82.9°F and its rainfall drops to 0.11 inch, so the month after is warmer and drier again. We could not verify a sea-surface temperature series for this stretch of coast, so we give no water reading. Where such tables exist elsewhere, they usually average daily maximum water temperatures, a shade warmer than a 24-hour mean. Worth knowing before you trust one on an Atlantic surf coast.

June gives Ericeira its longest daylight of the year and near-dry weather at 0.53 inch, while afternoons stay at 79.0°F rather than July’s 82.9°F, so pack a layer for the 9 p.m. light.

Go for: 14 hours 55 minutes of daylight on June 15, two wet days in an average month, and afternoons that stop short of high-summer heat.

Think twice before: planning the trip around warm water. We could not verify a sea-surface series for this coast, and mornings still average 61.7°F.

One caveat before the figures. Every number here comes from IPMA’s station 579 at Lisboa Gago Coutinho, a gauge sitting inland at 103.9 m (341 feet), not from an instrument on the Ericeira seafront. An exposed surf coast runs cooler and windier by day than an inland runway, and the high ground behind it is colder and far wetter. Read these normals as the shape of June in this corner of Portugal, not as a reading taken at the top of the cliff path.

IPMA, Portugal’s national weather service, puts June at 79.0°F for the average afternoon high, 61.7°F for the average early-morning low, and 0.53 inch of rain for the whole month. Behind those numbers is a real thermometer, station 579 at 103.9 m, rather than a reanalysis grid cell averaging a square of ocean and hillside. A station reading and a grid cell do not always agree, and you have a right to know which one you are reading before you pack.

Two days in an average June record at least 1 mm, 0.04 inch: measurable rain lands roughly one day in fifteen. Heavier weather is rarer still, at 0.4 day a month reaching 10 mm, 0.39 inch, so a genuine soaking turns up about two Junes in five. Those are IPMA’s own thresholds, not the 0.10-inch bar that American monthly tables use, and the counts do not swap across the Atlantic. With a month total of 0.53 inch, the water mostly arrives in short episodes rather than in a written-off day.

The spread between 79.0°F and 61.7°F is 17.3 degrees, and it is the single most useful figure for the bag. Bring a long-sleeve layer and something windproof for the two ends of the day, shorts and sunscreen for the middle of it. Our packing guide covers the rest of the list. The coastal specific is wind off the Atlantic, and no station at Ericeira measures it for these normals.

On June 15 the sun rises at 6:09 a.m. and sets at 9:04 p.m. local time, giving 14 hours 55 minutes of daylight, calculated from sunrise-sunset.org. That is enough light for two separate beach sessions with a long lunch between them. It also pushes dinner late without pushing it into the dark, and it means the strongest sun of the day sits well after most visitors have already had lunch.

How warm is Ericeira in June?

The month averages 79.0°F at its warmest hour and 61.7°F at its coolest, a 17.3-degree swing every 24 hours. These are monthly means, not extremes: individual June days land above and below both marks, and a windy afternoon on an exposed reef will read lower than the same hour at the airport gauge inland. Nothing in the normals promises a single specific day.

In practice that means a fleece for the 6 a.m. coffee, a t-shirt from late morning, and the fleece back on for the walk home under the 9 p.m. sky. If your trip depends on going in the water, ask the surf school what wetsuit thickness they are handing out that week.

Frost is not a June question here: the average low of 61.7°F sits nearly thirty degrees above freezing. We found no daily-minimum series for the station, so we count no individual cold nights, and none of the monthly figures suggest one.

How busy is Ericeira in June? Crowds, prices and booking ahead

We found no occupancy series and no monthly room-rate series for Ericeira, so we crown no month cheap and no month expensive. What we can date is the weather, and it is already summer weather: 0.53 inch of rain and two wet days put June on the dry side of the year rather than in the spring shoulder. For the money side of the trip, what a week in Portugal costs carries the tiers we do have.

On booking, we found no lead-time data for the town, so we name no number of weeks. Two practical moves stand on their own. Lock the room before the flight, because Ericeira is a small town and the beds within walking distance of the water are finite. Then read the flight options alongside the car rental rules, since the bus and the rental car are the two ways in from Lisbon and we could not verify current fares or timetables.

We could not verify a lodging-tax rate for the municipality, so we give no percentage and no per-night amount. Ask two questions at check-in: whether a tourist tax applies per person per night, and whether the price you already paid online includes it.

The one upgrade that changes June is location rather than comfort. A bed in the old town means the 9:04 p.m. sunset is a walk, not a drive, and the two morning hours before the wind picks up belong to you instead of to a parking search. Our where-to-stay guide frames the same choice across the country.

Things to do in Ericeira in June

With 14 hours 55 minutes of daylight and only two wet days in an average month, June allows the thing May rarely allows: two sessions in one day. Morning on the water, a long middle of the day out of the sun, then a second stretch on the sand that runs until dinner. May’s 5.7 wet days and 2.00 inches of rain make that plan a gamble four weeks earlier.

The named places sit within a few miles of each other. Ribeira d’Ilhas is the reef cove north of town that hosts competitions. Praia dos Pescadores lies directly below the old streets, the one you reach on foot. Foz do Lizandro spreads out at the river mouth to the south, the widest sand of the group. São Lourenço and Coxos are the experienced-surfer end of the coast. We could not verify lifeguard dates, parking charges or surf-school rates, so check those locally.

June changes the air around these places more than it changes the water in front of them. The land gains 6.0 degrees between May and June, while the ocean warms slowly behind it, and we could not verify by how much. That gap is the season: the sand is warm, the wind still has an edge, and the same cove feels different at 8 a.m. and 4 p.m.

What costs nothing in June is the best of it: the cliff walk between coves, the sand itself, and the long golden hour that runs toward a 9:04 p.m. sunset. Inland, the palace town of Mafra and, further out, Sintra are the paid indoor options. We could not verify their June hours or ticket prices, so confirm both before you set off.

Ericeira in June: a two-day itinerary

Day one runs on the light. Out at 7 a.m. in a layer, because the average low is 61.7°F and the sun has been up since 6:09. Surf or walk the reef at Ribeira d’Ilhas while the coast is empty, breakfast back in town by 10, then Praia dos Pescadores until the heat peaks. Take the middle of the afternoon indoors or under shade. Return to Foz do Lizandro around 5, and set dinner for 8: full daylight still, sunset at 9:04.

Day two goes inland and back. Morning at Mafra’s palace town, afternoon on the sand at São Lourenço, evening in Ericeira. If the 0.4-day soaking arrives instead, spend the indoor hours at Mafra or run the day into Lisbon, an hour’s drive away by the coast road, and come back for the evening. With rain on only two days in fifteen, the clear plan is the one to book.

Ericeira in June vs May and July

Measure May June July
Average high 73.0°F 79.0°F 82.9°F
Average low 57.4°F 61.7°F 64.4°F
Rainfall 2.00 in 0.53 in 0.11 in
Days with 0.04 in or more 5.7 2.0 0.4

June runs 6.0 degrees warmer than May by day and 3.9 degrees cooler than July. Rain is where the three months separate hardest: 2.00 inches in May, roughly a quarter of that in June, and 0.11 inch in July. Wet days fall from 5.7 to 2.0 to 0.4 across the same stretch. We found no sea-surface series for any of the three months, so the water column stays empty rather than guessed.

Shift four weeks later and you gain heat and near-certain dry weather, and you lose the longest evenings of the year: the solstice falls in June, and July’s days are already shortening. Shift four weeks earlier and you trade six degrees and nearly four extra wet days for a quieter coast. The 12-month view of Portugal puts those swaps against the rest of the country.

Is June a good time to visit Ericeira?

Yes, for anyone whose trip is built on daylight and dry ground: surfers, walkers, people who want the sand at 7 a.m. and dinner at 9 p.m. No, for anyone whose idea of a beach holiday is unhurried swimming in warm water. We could not verify the June sea temperature here, and an Atlantic reef coast at 61.7°F before dawn is not the Algarve.

If the answer came out no, July is the month to take: 82.9°F afternoons, 0.11 inch of rain, and 0.4 wet day in an average month. If it came out no for the opposite reason, because heat is the problem rather than the cure, May keeps the highs at 73.0°F and asks you to accept 5.7 wet days in exchange. The Algarve is the warmer-water answer if that matters more than the surf.

What no other month gives is the pairing: 14 hours 55 minutes of daylight on June 15 alongside a month total of 0.53 inch of rain.

The last word

The decision that matters is where you sleep, not which beach you pick, because every cove here is within a short drive and only one of them lets you walk home in the dusk. Keep one pairing in mind while you weigh June against July: June’s count of heavy-rain days, 0.4 at 0.39 inch or more, is exactly July’s count of days with any measurable rain at all. That is how close the two months sit. If you take June, book the table for 8 p.m., because the sun does not set until 9:04.

  • Station caveat: the gauge is inland at Lisbon’s airport, 103.9 m up, not on the Ericeira seafront. The exposed coast runs cooler and windier, and the high ground behind it is colder and wetter.
  • Threshold caveat: IPMA counts wet days at 1 mm (0.04 inch) and 10 mm (0.39 inch), not at the 0.10-inch bar used in US monthly tables. The counts are not interchangeable.
  • We found no sea-surface temperature series, no occupancy or room-rate series and no lodging-tax rate for Ericeira, so we give no water reading, no price ranking and no tax percentage.
