Nearly every Jamaican vacation starts here, and most of them last about forty minutes: bag claim, transfer van, gone west or east before the city has said a word. Montego Bay is the island’s second city and its busiest airport, and it spends most of its life being crossed rather than visited. It does have a case to make, though: a reef beach in the middle of town, a walkable strip of bars and duty-free counters, golf, and great houses along the coast road. Below, who should hear it out.

Doctor’s Cave Beach and the Hip Strip: entry fee and the walk between them
Doctor’s Cave Beach Club is the reason a working port city keeps a postcard in its middle: a gated crescent of pale sand, water held flat by the reef offshore, loungers and umbrellas for rent, and a gate fee (est., unverified at press time) that keeps the vendor traffic on the street side. Cornwall Beach next door runs the same water at a lower volume. Neither is Seven Mile, and neither is trying to be.
Gloucester Avenue, the Hip Strip, packs bars, duty-free counters, patty windows and the craft market into roughly a mile (est.), and it is the one stretch of urban Jamaica most visitors walk after dark. City habits apply: a taxi late, nothing flashy on display. The named pockets in the current US advisory are inland neighborhoods rather than anything on this coast, and the safety page carries the Level 2 detail and the zone list.
Rose Hall, the golf courses and the coast road east
Drive east and the city hands off to the resort belt. Rose Hall Great House sits on its hill above the highway, a plantation-era mansion sold today on the ghost story of Annie Palmer, with the candlelit night tour doing far more theatrical work than the daytime version. Below it lie the fairways: Cinnamon Hill and White Witch put championship golf inside the resort strip itself, which is the strongest single argument for sleeping in MoBay rather than passing through it.
Keep going and Falmouth arrives with its Georgian storefronts and cruise pier, then the Luminous Lagoon after dark, where the water glows when you swim through it. West of the city, rafting on the Great River and the zipline course behind it fill an afternoon. None of this requires a second base, which is the quiet practical case for the bay: everything above is a round trip from one hotel.
Where to stay in Montego Bay: strip, resort belt or hillside
Three zones, three different trips. Hip Strip hotels put dinner, the beach and the bars on foot, and charge you in noise. The eastern belt, from Ironshore out to Rose Hall, holds the large all-inclusives with private sand and shuttle-only evenings. Hillside guesthouses above the city trade walkability for a view over the bay, usually at gentler rates (est.).
Melissa put this coast among the hardest-hit places on the island, and the comeback has moved at different speeds street by street, which is why the recovery tracker reports it by region rather than as one number. The working method: read reviews carrying post-storm dates, and ask a property what is open on site, not just whether it is open. Montego Bay, Negril or Ocho Rios: which base to choose
Stay if the trip runs under four nights, if golf or an early departure sets the schedule, or if a long van ride on arrival would cost you the first day outright. Drive on if you came for sand: Negril owns the beach and the cliffs, Ocho Rios stacks the waterfalls, and the head-to-head weighs the bay against the west in detail.

The city everybody flies over rewards a modest ask and a short stay. Swim at Doctor’s Cave before the heat, watch the arrivals drop low over the bay on final approach, eat at the craft-market end of Gloucester Avenue, sleep, then go. Two nights here is no consolation prize when the alternative is spending both the first and last afternoons of a vacation staring at the coast road through a window.
