The south coast is Jamaica with the volume turned down: fishing coves instead of resort strips, cactus and cattle pasture instead of rainforest, and a village called Treasure Beach that has spent decades building tourism on its own terms. What reopened on the south coast, and what has not

Melissa came ashore in late October 2025 and the parish of St. Elizabeth absorbed the worst of it. The recovery since then reads very unevenly by coast: the north barely broke stride, Negril got most of its rooms back into service, and this stretch is where a guesthouse you loved two years ago may still be a building site. So the working rule here is unglamorous. Verify each address individually, by phone or by a message the owner answers personally, and ask what is actually operating on the property. A room can be open while the kitchen, the pool and the neighbor’s boat tours are not. Availability on a booking site is not evidence, particularly on a coast where some reopening dates sit in 2027.

None of that makes the region off-limits. Roads are passable, the airports run a full schedule, and visitor money is the quickest thing anyone can send here. Treasure Beach: four fishing bays, guesthouses instead of resorts

Treasure Beach is not a single place. It is a run of coves, Billy’s Bay, Frenchman’s Bay, Calabash Bay and Great Bay, spread along a few miles of brown-sand shore where the surf can arrive with attitude. Nobody should come expecting the powdered white of the west. Visitors come instead for the pace, the pasture that runs almost to the waterline, and beds that belong to families rather than chains.

Community tourism here predates the buzzword: small guesthouses, a network of drivers everyone knows by first name, and a fishing culture that keeps boat trips in the hands of the men who own the hulls. Ask your host to arrange the water rather than an agency. YS Falls: seven tiers, 09:30 to 15:00, closed Mondays

The inland headliner sits on a private estate that opened to visitors in 1992 and still behaves like a working farm: a jitney ride out through pasture, then seven tiers of falls dropping into pools you can actually swim, with rope swings and zip lines for whoever needs a dare. The gates run 09:30 to 15:00, and the property closes on Mondays and local public holidays. That last line catches more travelers than anything else on this page.

A five and a half hour window sets the shape of the day. Reach the gate near opening and the upper pools are yours before the vans arrive. Roll in at two in the afternoon and you have paid for a rinse. Black River, Pelican Bar and Appleton: the rest of the coast’s day trips

Black River runs mangrove safaris where the crocodiles usually oblige (est. two hours afloat). Floyd’s Pelican Bar stands on a sandbar offshore, reached only by boat, and its condition shifts with the season, so confirm the evening before. Appleton Estate pours at the end of its tour up the Nassau valley. Schedules and prices for all three moved after the storm, and we are not quoting figures we cannot verify.

The last word

This coast will rebuild more slowly than anywhere else on the island, and pretending otherwise serves nobody who lives on it. What survives intact is the good part: the 09:30 gate at YS Falls, the boat that leaves Great Bay when the fishermen judge the sea right, and a village where a greeting from a stranger expects a reply.
